Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Deverick moved from the smithy hastily, pausing only for his armor and sword. His fist was sore but no more than his brother's jaw. The streets outside were bustling and it seemed business was as usual for The Free City of Greyhawk. Deverick now had to make a choice... mayhaps the hardest choice he had ever made. What was he to do now. Stay in Greyhawk or leave? if he stayed, there were still choices... the Old City? His meager coin would last longer there but that quarter was nigh overrun with thieves. The River Quarter? That was a good choice... though more expensive there was a place where foreigners congregated. That's where those traveling to and from Greyhawk would be found. That seemed a likely place to find like-minded fellows seeking adventure.

Should he sell his sword to a rich merchant... guildsman?

Should he join some mercenary band to fight against the orcs of The Pomarj... The ruffians of The Bandit Kingdoms... or mayhaps the vile minions of the Horned Society itself?

Should he work as an enforcer for the Thieve's Guild? Or mayhaps join the Watch? Surely either of these groups were in need of a strong arm and sharp sword.

Mayhaps join a band of adventurers seeking fame and gold in the barrows north of the city itself?

So many decisions yet he had time. There was still some gold left in the pouch at his belt. Mayhaps just let the fates or gods decide for him. For now a cup of good nut-brown ale would suffice. That and a cool tap room to enjoy it in. It was nearly Highsun and warm for the month of Coldeven. Yes... he could start with that!

Dev made it to the Black Gate where The Old City was separated from the New City beyond. The wall as well as the gate was black... from centuries of smoke and ash from the countless cook fires, chimneys, magician's braziers, and torches from the slum and it's poor. The contingent of the Watch saw the big man coming and shifted their bored countenances to bear toward Deverick and now exhibiting gtreat interest.

"Hold!" cried the lead Watchman, a lean youth of about sixteen or seventeen winters, with more bravado than his young face showed.

"State yer business n' the reason ye wish ta pass inta the New City! N' while yer at it... best be show'n me the sword license for that big piece o' steel on yer back."

Dev knew the drill. Greyhawk made coin in any manner it may. It's dwarven Tax Collector, one Glodreddi Bakkanin, had decided that if adventurers were to carry their steel about like they owned the city, that the city should make an orb or three for their effort!

The young Watchman swallowed hard. Dev made two... maybe three of him. And though four of his fellows waited in the shadows of the gate and tunnel beyond, the young man had no doubts that he would be dead before they could aid him if the big bald warrior decided not to play it their way.

"Ye... ah... ye kin apply fer the licence right 'ere if ye don't 'ave one." he said with a shaky voice. "But ye'll 'ave ta get it afore ye pass through."

Dev looked down at his ever shrinking belt pouch and sighed. Greyhawk! The Gem of the Flannes! Insult to injury this day was heading. Dam that dwarf and the Lord Mayor besides! Welcome to the world o' adventure Deverick! Shite!

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The Large man called Deverick decided that a tankard of cool ale, and a pretty wench for his lap, was just the thing to improve his soured mood. His recent farewell of family was less the worthy of a balled. His right hand still stung from the blow to his elder brother’s jaw. He bore a few bruises himself, where his brother had landed a couple of well-aimed blows.

Deverick wore wool trousers, a linen shirt with a gambeson over it. He carried all his worldly possessions in a backpack and a bundle, that was chainmail rolled with a leather carrying straps in one hand. A Great Sword rode his back, with a Gladius and Sax in scabbards upon his belt. Hard boots made clopping noises as he strode the cobblestone street toward the so-called Black Gate.

As the warrior approached the gate, he spotted the Watchmen there, as they looked the pedestrians over, speaking to one from time to time. He offered a silent prayer to Tritherion that he could get past them without a word. But it seemed the God was not listening this day, for as Dev drew close, one of the Watchmen addressed him about a license. “Well met, Watchman. What are ye talking about? What be this about a license?” Asked the Warrior.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The young Watchman swallowed hard once more and his mouth began to tremble a bit but before he could speak another voice rang out from the tunnel beyond the Black Gate itself.

"That'll be all Betram! I'll handle this." said a older Watchman coming into view.

He stood nearly six feet and was brawny besides. Though not a match for Deverick, he was built like a warrior who had swung steel for some time.

"Yer Deverick aren't ye?" he said as he stood before Deverick. The adventurer could see by his uniform that he was a Sgt-at-Arms. His steel grey eyes squinted as he looked the big warrior up and down. Somehow Deverick thought he knew him as well... but from where?

"You're Borcar's boy... right?" The elder Watchman said then nodded his head. "Aye! I know ye I do. Well now! Wot's ah smith do'n carrying steel the likes o' that about anyways? Eh?"

The older Watchman then gave Deverick a sly wink just out of eye-shot of the others.

"This 'ere be Deverick, son o' Brocar the smith. Jus down the road. Must be delever'n this armor n' steel ta some high n' mighty in the High Quarter I'm think'n. Ain't that so lad?" he said. A slow smile spreading along his lips that made his bushy mustache quiver a bit.

"Oh! me name be Rilton. Sgt-at-arms Rilton. I be in charge o' the Black Gate, till dusk that is. Cause if'n you ain't deliver'n that steel then everyone knows there be ah sword tax n' one must 'ave ah licence ta carry ah fine blade the likes o' that. Ten orbs fer ah longsword... but that thing will cost ye twenty orbs. That is if ye were carry'n it as ah adventurer n' nay ah smith."

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

It seemed that while he had been serving his city, in the Militia, the powers that be, in Greyhawk, found yet another way to take coin out of an honest man’s purse. Dev was about to protest this nonsense, when a voice of authority boomed out. It seemed the man in charge of these Watchmen had decided to take a hand in the matter.

Dev was about to offer protest, but before he could get out a word, the Sergeant seemed to indicate he knew him. Or more as like, his late father was known and he as his son. But be that as it may, the other man offered Dev a way out of an embarrassing situation, for he only had seventeen gold pieces to his name. After Deverick talked the Militia into allowing him to purchase armor and weapons from them, and other equipment, what he had left was nothing to retire upon.

“Oh, aye, indeed, good Sergeant, I be taking this steel into the High Quarter seeking to sell it. That be the Gods own truth. Or may Tritherion send boils on me arse, if I speak false.” It was the truth, more or less.

Sgt-at-Arms Rilton gave Deverick another quick wink and a curt nod.

"See! Jus as I'd thought. Well then lad we can't keep the high n' mighty wait'n now can we? Best be on yer way then."

Yet, before the big warrior could move on the elder sergeant held up a gauntlet- covered hand.

"Best be tak'n this bit o' paper wi' ye lad. Tis ah pass it is. It'll get ye through the city wi' yer wares for ah few days... say till Godsday I'm think'n. Aye! Three days hence."

Riton's smile was some what wider now and as genuine as an Orb minted by Greyhawk itself!

"If ye present it ta the officer in charge at the Grand Citadel... well now ye might jus get hired on ta the Watch. We could use ah blade like ye we could. Show 'em that there paper n' tell 'em that Sgt-at-Arms Rilton sent ya. Be tell'n yer Dad I said hullo. He mended me sword once n' would nay take ah copper Common fer it. Ah gud man yer Dad."

Deverick took on a sudden serious expression. In a soft tone of voice, so only Sgt, Rikton could hear his words.”Ye honor my Da, with your kind words,Sir. But I am sad to say, the Gods called him to them, a few days ago. He had been ill for some time.”  Dev looked away briefly, and then returned his attention to the Sgt.

The massive Warrior regarded the pass given to him, with a deep frown which passed for a look of concentration for Dev. While the Warrior could read and write, he was not the best in either subject. He slowly nodded. “Thank ye, kindly, Sergeant, for the pass. I am not sure what I be about, as of yet. But I shall give your suggestion about the Watch some thought. I will be about me affairs, if that be all?” Said Dev in a friendly tone of voice.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The elder Sergeant's smile retreated a bit at Deverick's sad news. He then gave him a curt nod.

"Twas ah gud man lad. Nay! Yer free ta go n' think 'bout the offer. The pay be less than crawl'n ahround sum ruin but it be steady. Be on yer way afore the day wastes!"

The Sgt-at-Arms waved the big warrior through the gate and the dark tunnel beyond. As Deverick shouldered his burden and moved on, his eyes adjusted to the dimness of the place. The Tunnel ran about 100 paces and torches were set in scones about every twenty paces or so. The torches sputtered and dark smoke from the pitch further stained the walls and ceiling of the place. Though their meager light was welcome, there was still enough shadows to go around. Deverick knew the city to be cheap enough not to light this place with magic. No doubt The Mage Guild's price was too high, at least for this place and the lower quarters. For in the High and Garden Quarters graceful glass globes were alight with spells that the apprentices must renew each day.

The tunnel itself was wide enough to take three wagons abreast. Here and there were stout oaken doors, strengthened by thick bands of iron and peppered with iron studs. Deverick's military service taught him that beyond these lied the rooms and stairways where the Watch and their fellows, The Guard, could sally out and flank would be foes. The warrior's eyes peered upward and were rewarded to find the murder holes where bolts, arrows, pitch, and boiled oil could rain down on anyone unfortunate to be caught there.

Whether by conscious or unconscious thought, Deverick sped up. His great strides ate up the distance betwixt the entrance and exit. The glow of the midday sun, and even it's heat, was welcome upon reaching the other side.

Even as Deverick wiped his yes and squinted as they adjusted to Sol's brightness, he heard a high child-like voice call out!

"Alms for the poor!" a small gaunt boy shouted! He stood just outside the exit with wooden bowl in hand.

His tunic was threadbare and patched many times over. Not only it, but the boys bare limbs, feet, and face were smudged with grime and dirt. The boy's hair was close cropped and his bright blue eyes held a keen glint of intellect.

"Ah copper Common gud knight! Jus one please!" the boy said with a hopeful smile. It was then that Deverick noted the wooden hand that hung upon a mere length of rope around his neck. The Beggar's Union!

These young gutter rats could be found all up and down the Processional and in The Petit Bazaar itself. No doubt they brought not only coin but many a rumor back to their master. As did their older and sometimes even more pathetic brethren who went so far as to perform self mutilation to gain their money.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Having won free of the Sergeant and his fellow Watchmen, Deverick make his way through the stygian abyss that was the tunnel to the next city quarter. He really needed a drink about now. A few ales in a cool tap room, and a pretty wench’s smile, would do wonders for his morale.

When the Warrior came back into the most welcome light of day, he started to think about his destination. The Mercenary Guild might be a good place to seek work, or he might start checking the public posting boards at the Market and some of the Taverns. But these thoughts where detoured by the sound of a child’s voice begging alms. Dev almost walked past the lad, but one of his blind spots was children. When he was in the Militia, he always gave some of his rations to poor children, or saved a few sweets to pass out on patrol.

Deverick looked at the child Beggar and smiled down to him. “Nice pitch, Lad, but I be no high and snobby Knight. Nay, I be jus a Warrior seeking to earn his bread. If he want ta earn a Noble, ye can guide me to the Mercenary Guild” The big man reached into his purse and removed a silver noble and held it for the lads inspection.

The urchin's hand literally disappeared in Dev's massive paw! Seeing this nearly magic trick made the young lad's eyes nearly bulge further. He shook his head wildly side to side at the big warrior's query.

"Nay! I... I... I mean I will not lead ya astray! I promise. It's not far Master Dev. Just up the Processional in fact. Where it connects to Horseshoe Road."

The beggar started forward but then stopped "The name is Tal Master Dev!"

With a wink Tal started out once again, calling over his shoulder "We'll have ta get through the Bazaar afore we make it though so you'd best hide that there purse least ya lose it. The Thieves Guild's best work the Small Bazaar and you'll be jostled ah bit so you'll never know."

As Deverick did his best to follow young Tal, he was soon immersed into the flowing throng of sights, sounds, and smells that was the Petit Bazaar! Perhaps the busiest market in all of Greyhawk, it was located at the crossroads of the Old City and the New City, just a stone's throw from the Black Gate. Goods from all over the city and the world could be found here. Silks being sold by a Merchant Prince from Ekbir rubbed shoulders with urchins from the Slum Quarter selling dubious sausages upon a stick. Jugglers and minstrels competed for coin with pickpockets from the passer-by. Many merchants pleaded and shouted for Dev's coin as he moved through. Everything from simple trinkets to dragon's eggs were to be had for the right price. For here no price was set in stone. In fact, the merchants appeared disappointed if the buyer did not haggle!

As Tal had fortold, Dev was jostled, bumped, and nearly tripped. Only his great size allowed him to cut a path through the crowded bazaar and keep up with the beggar who seemingly dodged all comers.

Once out of the bazaar, the Processional though crowded, seemed easier to transverse. Great shops and Guildhalls lined the wide street that ran from one end of the city to the other. Tal soon pointed ahead to a squat low building that looked more like a fort or keep that Dev was use to seeing while in service. It didn't look like any of the other buildings thus far. The big warrior could barely make out the shingle that held two cross sword and axe behind a golden shield upon it.

"There it be! Just like I said Master Dev!" the beggar was nearly beaming! His bright eyes never leaving the silver coin,

Deverick then spoke in a hushed tone. “Tal, the Noble be fer you, not the bloody Guild. Get some decent food in yer gullet, and stow the rest fer another day.

” Deverick then stood up and gently shoved the boy away. “ Ye have yer coin Beggar, now get ye gone, afore I plant me boot into yer arse!” said in a loud voice, for the benefit of anyone watching them. But there was just the hint of a smile on the Warrior's lips, before he turned and headed off towards the Guild.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Deverick saw a wave of different emotions wash over the young beggar's face. From shock to anger... from recognition to relief...

Tal then winked and a scowl slowly formed over his child-like features.

"Should've known! A pox on ya and all who know you!" he shouted for all to hear! Though the big warrior noted Tal's hands moved quickly and deftly to scoop up the coins, silver and copper, and then neatly hide them upon his person. Where? Deverick thought it better not to dwell upon the later.

Tal then turned on his heels and disappeared into the growing throng making their way up and down the wide Processional.

The big warrior then focused upon his destination, the Mercenary Guild. His hard high boots clomped up the three wide steps leading to the strong oaken door that would resist all comers save an ogre or a host with a battering-ram. Even with his powerful frame, Deverick had to push and push hard to enter. As the door swung open with an ever loud- CREAK!

A short and narrow foyer made of the same thick grey stones opened up into a wide open hall. Three men with long spears and determination could hold off two score of invaders trying to enter this place. In the distance Deverick could hear the low hum of men talking with an occasional louder oath or outburst of laughter. Before him, the warrior could see a small thick figure of a dwarf sitting behind a stout wooden table. His scraggly white hair was reminiscent of a Medusa and his rheumy steel grey eyes appeared to focus upon Deverick. A gap tooth smile spread along his lips as an aged-spotted hand smoothed out a long handsome beard.

"Ahhh! Come in lad! Come in! By the looks o' ye... well ye be in the richt place awright! Gelbrun Grobadore is at your service! Well... look'n for work eh?"

The Warrior named Deverick made his way past the impressive door of the Guild house, and into its bowels. When he came upon a Dwarf sitting at a table that bespoke of his being in the right place, the Warrior offered him a smile. He sat the mail bundle upon the floor and stretched before he spoke, and when Deverick did respond, it was in Dangmir, the native tongue of the Dwarves, admittedly with a thick accent.

“ I offer greetings, Rock Brother. I be Deverick, son of Borcar, a Citizen of this city, and newly mustered out of the Militia. I be seeking a position to earn my bread with with me skill with a sword.” Said Dev,as he reached into belt pouch, and brought forth his discharge paper and offered it to Gelbrun for inspection.

Master Gelbrun first studied Deverick, a certain amount of pride could be seen in those steel grey eyes. Dev knew he had made a good first impression. No doubt speaking in Dangmir was a good choice. The old dwarf then looked over the warrior's discharge papers. His lips moved as he silently read it, his head nodding now and then as he did so.

"All seems in order Hurmfardek*! Ye be in luck... Mordain smiles upon ye! This here Guild is widely respected about the city and if your skill wi' that blade be as great as it's length then ye should nay have trouble find'n and keep'n work. There is a small matter of dues... ten Orbs lad. That's for the whole year ya see. Ye can bunk down here for a few days and grab an ale at the bar... "

At this he hitched a thumb over a broad shoulder toward the place behind him where a few other fighters, by the the look of them, were hoisting up tankards at a long well made bar of dark and stained wood.

"... free o' charge. Ye have the coin surely? I have one or two jobs that might be suitable for the likes o' you."

The dwarf then held out his hand, palm up!

*Means literally Human big and strong in Dangmir.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

In reply to The Oligarch (msg # 15):

Deverick looked beyond the Dwarf, and saw the others, near the bar, eating and drinking. The fellowship was obvious of men  and women that lived by steel and blood. It took a special sort of individual to be a Warrior, not everyone could fulfill the measure of that life.  He was immediately drawn to this place of fellowship and comradely.

When  Gelbron held out his hand, and made mention of Dev having the price of joining, he hesitated. But then he chuckled, and dug into his purse for the ten pieces of gold and placed them into the Dwarf’s palm. Each coin was unique in its own way. One was newly minted with the symbol of Greyhawk on one side, and an image of the Lord Mayor upon the other. Each coin was much like the one before, in different states of wear and fade, two where from Hardy, the image was of its Despotrix and city symbol. There was even on coin from the far off Kingdom of Keoland, it was square in shape.

Once the coins where gone, Deverick regarded his much lighter purse with a frown. “ I be in the hopes ye are right, Master Gelbrun. Me purse be light, and I av need of work fittin fer a Warrior. But naught on the shady side o things, if ye please. I be a right proud follower of Tritherion, he don’t like such things. No insult offered to ye.” Said Dev,as he looked to the food and drink beyond the Dwarf’s Table.

The old dwarf counted the coins... testing each, first with a practiced eye then judging their weight by juggling them around his age-spotted hands. The Quartermaster even bit the old coin from Keoland before setting them aside with a nod of satisfaction.

"All seems in order lad. Remember this bit o' advice. Gold doesn't burn!"

Dev had heard this before. From an assistant smith, a dwarf, who worked along side his father at the smithy. Besides the oblivious, the dwarves' love for gold was often seen as greed but Dev knew it to be more out of practicality. Dwarves feel that forms of wealth, just like people, must prove themselves trustworthy and nothing was more trustworthy as gold.

"Tritherion eh? Well that's gud ta hear lad. This is a respectful place. I nay hire out to ruffians n' such. But Tritherion must be smiling down on ya! The jobs be this... one, Ren O' The Star is in need of sum muscle. Dangerous work aye!
Being ah Oligarch and notorious gambler, he has his share o' enemies. Yet, he has plenty o' coin besides. Two, ah scholar over in the Clerkburg needs ah package delivered. Up to Elmshire, bout ah day or two north o' Greyhawk. Three, a Mercenary band be hiring out. Wot I hear the company be forming n' setting off to yon Safeton and the Wildcoast. Now ye'll have to speak to each o' these for the amount coin but in me mind nobody pays as much as Ren lad. Now the scholar probably be the quickest n' easiest coin. The Mercenary captain be ah Halforc. Never trust an orc lad... even half o' one."

The dwarf paused a heartbeat, then reached into a small chest and retrieved a small item. A badge that had the crossed sword and axe behind a golden shield. The Mercenary Guild's very own symbol.

"If your future employer's mind be sound, he'll be asking to see that their badge. It means you're ah member in gud standing."

"The Merchant's And Traders Union be in The old City... Thieves Quarter, just off the Processional. Ren should be there. Have ah care lad. His enemies be real enough and they be dangerous. Seek out Stimtrin Cannasay, he's ah dwarf n' known to me. He'll steer ya richt. Just remember ya got ah place here... if ya ever need it."

Gelburn then sighed "Go get ya ah ale. For certain ye'll be needing one."

Dev could see that a group of warriors had gathered around a table where two of their number now sat. One was a brawny man. Dark complicated with dark black hair. His Flan heritage was evident... mayhaps from the Duchy of Tenha. The other was a... a woman! Tall and fair of skin and hair. A Northerner, a Frost or Snow barbarian. Yet Deverick could see her muscles bulging under her leather and furs. They were arm wrestling and the surrounding warriors were cheering them on. A small pile of silver coins lay on the scarred and stained table.

A loud THUNK could be heard over the cheers. The blonde barbarian turned Dev's way and gave him a wink and smile.

"Gud try!" she said speaking Common with a thick accent. "But not gud enough!"

Still looking Deverick's way "Maybe sum other challenger now? Anybody?"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The matter of potential employment settled, at least until he spoke to Ren O Star, or more like one of his assistants, Deverick thanked Gelbrun, and offered the Dwarf his arm to clasp. “Afore I go, do ye av a place for me to store me gear, for a spell? This chain be heavy to tot, even fer me.” He said with a grin.

With the matter of his future employment settled, at least as far as the Guild was concerned, Dev headed straight to the bar and ordered tall ale. It was quickly downed, and its brother was now in Dev’s hand. He leaned against the bar and watched the arm wrestling going on. One of them was a striking woman from the far north. Dev had only seen her like once, and long ago.

The Northern Wench defeated her opponent, and then looked around and locked eyes with Deverick. He almost dropped his ale when he smiled and actually winked at him. He was no wet behind the ears lad, when it came to women. Nay, in fact, he had broken a few hearts of the fairer sex, from time to time. But this woman was different; she had to be, if she was here. She asked for another opponent, and Deverick found himself heading over to drop into the chair opposite her.

The large man returned her grin with broad even teeth. “Hail, and well met, Wench. I be Deverick, son of Borcar. Just joined th Guild, I did. If ye want an opponent, I be yer man. But what say, we make it be more interesting. Say a Gold Orb ta the winner?"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Gelburn accepted and returned Dev's clasp and the big warrior could still feel the strength of the older dwarf in his grip. He gave Deverick a curt nod and one of those gap toothed smiles!

"Aye! Ya can store the stuff here if ya like. I'll see it locked away fer sure. I have ah chest wi' ah gud lock I do." he said, indicating that Dev could leave the armor, blade, and gear under the table.

"Oh! Watch your back lad. Tell Stimtrin I named ya Dwarmer*. Now go!" the Quartermaster said then quickly turned to scratch some such upon the parchment before him. Most like Deverick's name and date in joining the guild.

The bar was nigh deserted when Dev ordered his ale and quaffed it down. The ale was surprisingly good considering it was free. It's nutty taste was accented by only a slight hint of honey. As the big warrior thought upon this the Tenha warrior was just rising, rubbing his wrist as he did so. Then the blonde barbarian spoke and winked at him. While Deverick settled into the chair opposite her, she nodded.

"Sure of vun self izz ah gud thing Deverick Borcarson. Ah gold yah? Vell vhy not. There are twelve silver coins on dah table. More than ah gold. You vin... you get all. I vin... I get gold coin. Yah?"

She threw back her head, sending waves of blonde hair about. She then held out her hand. Deverick grasped it tightly. She was indeed strong though about a half foot shorter than the warrior across from her. Yet her strength was of the subtle type, the type that many a men had misjudged over time to their disadvantage.

Dev readied himself as another fighter about the table counted down from three to zero. Both contestants threw their weight behind their arms and muscles tightened and strained. However, at last the blonde barbarian slammed the ex-smith's arm to the stained and scarred table.

"Ha! You haff lost Deverick Borcarsen! If I keep vinn'n I might never haff ta swing my broadsword ahgain.!" she said smiling with nigh perfect white teeth.

A heartbeat later she was all business once more! the smile was gone... her blue eyes bright with challenge.

Their fellow mercenaries eyes went wide and their jaws dropped. Now three golden Orbs sat among twelve silver Nobles. The money upon the table represented mayhaps a moth's wage... at least a Seven-day!

"You are ah brave man Borcarsen. That much izz true. But I need coin. Zoo I vill vin ahgain." she said as they grasped hands and ready.

An elven swordsman held up three slim fingers.

"Ready?" he said in a voice that had a sing-song lilt to it. At their nods he began to count and lower his fingers one by one.

This time Deverick's great strength did not fail him and it was the barbarian's arm that hit the scarred table! Her eyes went wide and she was slack-jawed!

All around them the mercenaries at first gasped but then, nearly as one, they cheered! It came to Deverick's mind that nearly all had been defeated by her at time or another. Mayhaps they saw him as their champion of sorts.

Deverick nodded in agreement with the pretty northern wench, and then he heard a gruff voice behind him. The Warrior craned his neck to take in the visage of a Dwarf, and a Warrior by his garb. When they both bespoke of working for the same man as he was, Deverick had to chuckle. And here he thought this was going to be a one man job.

“Well met, Master Dwarf. So we will be working together fer this here Ren fella. I do ponder what this here Ren wants with the like’s o us? Tarry here, while I be about getting into me armor and such. Won’t be a mo.” Dev said, as he got to his feet and grabbed his gear.

The large man would ask someone for help, but could do it himself, it needs be. He donned the mail hauberk, that went to just above his knees. A leather guard over his head followed by a mail coif. Then the kettle helmet was the last touch to head protection. He left his gauntlets off for the time being. Once Dev buckled on his weapons belt that held the short sword and dagger, he was almost ready to go. The final touch was to slide the Great Sword and scabbard over one shoulder by it's leather strap.

He smiled at his new co-workers to be. " That be more like it. I feels kind of nekked without me mail on.Right, lets be about matters."

As Deverick donned his armor and weapons the northern barbarian did her best to aid him while the dwarf looked on. The big warrior could not help noticing that she gave him glances of approval. She in turn dressed for battle as well. Blossom wore black leather studded with golden kronars* of her faraway kingdom. Upon her belt she wore a matching set of broadsword and dagger, both having scabbards of black leather with intricate golden inlaid. Her helm had golden wings like that of a Valkyrie.

At last when Dev was finished and ready to go she smiled "You look gud Borcarsen. Kord himeslf vould find ya vorthy. Vee go yah?

The dwarf just sighed and headed toward the door.

After receiving Master Gelbrun's assurances that the rest of his gear would be safe until Dev's return, the trio left for the Old City and the Merchants' and Traders' Union. The Processional remained crowded as they made their way south. The Petit Bazaar, though less crowded, remained busy as ever. Dev remembered Tal's advice and tucked his pouch inside his hauberk. Though jostled as before all three came out unscathed. It was not long before they made the Black Gate itself.

"Deverick!" came a familiar child-like cry! "Deverick! I have news!"

It was Tal, complete with wooden bowel. As he ran up, both dwarf and barbarian looked to their weapons as the beggar approached.

Blossom just laughed "Hope he leads us ta sum trouble! Dis trip be boring yah?"

Tal was an excellent guide indeed. He stayed about twenty to thirty paces ahead of the trio. Once they made the Black gate and tunnel behind it, the beggar made his way through by showing the wooden hand about his neck. the Beggar Master must keep his bribes up to date. Not so the three that followed.

The lean youth that had stopped Dev from entering the New City just hours before was on this side of the Black Gate now. His scarlet cloak swirled slightly in the late afternoon breeze.

The Watchman stood a bit taller at Dev's words. Though there was still some suspicion in his eyes he gave the big warrior a nod and parting wave.

"Well... the militia be good. Aye! Then I'll expect no trouble... and aid if need be then."

The dwarf and maiden waited for Deverick upon the other end of the tunnel. The light of day did little to improve the looks of the Old City. The Processional continued on southward though the traffic was somewhat liter than on the other side of the Black Gate. The trio picked up their pace toward the Merchant's and Trader's Union. Dev knew this place for Borcar's smithy was located here and Dev had grown up here on these dark and narrow streets.

Deverick knew that the thieves ruled supreme here. Their Guildhall was here. Dev knew that his father, and now mayhaps his brother, must pay protection money to keep his shop safe. though the thugs never pushed too hard for Borcar and his sons were all big muscular men, the smith paid not because he could not best the enforcers but because he could not best determined thieves in the night. More than one business in this Quarter was ruined by repeated burglaries.

As Deverick looked about this maze of alleys, shacks, boarding houses, brothels and taverns he knew this place to be home. The Old City, separated by the Black Wall from the New City, took on a life all its own. Though poorer than the New City, this Quarter was self sufficient. Not that trade didn't exist betwixt the Old and the New but the Old City did not need the other's riches to get by. This was one of the reasons why many a adventurer came from this section of Greyhawk, more than any other. Better yet, why they survived their adventures.

The balance of power in the Old City centered on the Thieves' Guild, which controls the major sources of income here, except for the Public Bath, which is owned by the city. The Old City sees less of the City Watch than do its neighboring districts. The Beggars' Union is a force to be reckoned with in the Slum Quarter and their members are said to be the eyes and ears of the city. Their Master, one Gaspar, might be the most well informed person in the city! The patrols of the City Watch move unchallenged here during the daytime, but at night two patrols always march together. Even then they remain on the lighted thoroughfares of the Processional, Caravan Street, and other major avenues. The City Watch patrols are scarce to nonexistent after dark elsewhere. Crime and misery are commonplace here, but so are gallantry and decency.  For protection many, with coin, relied on the Guild of Nightwatchmen. The Nightwatchmen in the Old city take their duties very seriously indeed--their fee is always money well spent.

The Merchants and Traders are also well represented in the Old City. Their huge compound complete with small warehouses, smithy, stables, and Guildhall cane be carefully seen as it sits right upon the Processional almost in the center of the Old City itself. Also present is a sizable barracks where the Merchant Guard are found. They patrol the yard, man the gate, and stand guard in and about the guildhall itself. They from time to time hire out to adventurers as caravan guards and as hire muscle during times of stress or upheaval. Ren o' The star was its master though his recent gambling mishaps had many talking. That and all knew that the Thieves' Guild had infiltrated The Merchants House and wished to control it as well.

Dev knew this part well enough. Mayhaps this was why Ren wanted extra muscle. Mayhaps why he wanted outsiders. Those that did not belong to the guild but whose loyalty could be bought through golden orbs. The compound could be seen in the distance. Its many storied guildhall rising above the walls surrounding it. Yet, the gate was closed! Usually, though guarded, the gate was wide open to allow business to enter as it would. Two guards in the guild's own livery stood on the wall above the gate. Their eyes wide open and the expressions wary. As the trio approached they scowled down.

"The yard be temporarily closed!" one shouted. "If ye have business ye must come back... on the morrow methinks!"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The three Mercs made their way through the winding streets of the old city. Deverick knew almost every twist and turn in certain parts, and had no clue in others; His parents had forbidden their sons from going to certain areas, in fear of what might happen. Slavers did not operate openly in the city, but there were always rumors of children disappearing. Life was cheap in these streets; a death might be purchased for a few silver coins.

As the Merchants and Traders Union came into view, Deverick could tell something was amiss. This place was always a hive of activity, with the comings and goings of Merchants, and any others that wished to transact business in the city of Greyhawk. When they saw the gates closed, Dev just looked at his companions, with a puzzled expression. “Now this be odd, this er place be a bee hive durin th day, usually.” Said Deverick to his companions.

When one of the Guards called down to them, and told them to return the next day, Deverick frowned. He needed to work, and this was the place where it was located. He walked up to the gate and looked up at the Guard. “Whas all this then, Lad? We be from the Mercenary Guild, an we wish ta hav words with someone named Master Stimtrin Canasay. "That be them lads!" Stimtrin said. "Open the gates!"

The huge gates slowly swung open and within heartbeats the trio were ushered in quickly and the gates were closed behind them. Deverick had seen his share of combat in his days serving the militia. So his practiced eye picked up signs of recent combat, though someone or many someones tried to cover the fact up.

Stimtrin soon descended from his perch atop the wall and joined Dev and companions. He was flanked by two guardsmen.

"I be glad ta see ye all. Though there be much ta say I canna'say it out here in the yard. We'll go inside. Follow me!" the dwarf said as he turned on his heels and made for the Guildhall proper.

Crossing the yard Deverick noticed knots of merchants and guardsmen, here and there about the place. Most were talking, whispering more like, among themselves. Some pointed at the mercenaries as they moved across the rough packed ground of the yard to the Guildhall.

The Guildhall itself was a rambling three-storied structure that seemed to have had many additions over the years. Though not as solid as the Mercenary's guildhall, the doors were reinforced and the windows could all be shuttered against an  attack. Once inside the dwarf whisked them along a wide and long hallway covered with thick carpeting from far away Ekibir upon the floors and rich tapestries of various places around Oreth on the walls. Finally they came to a beautiful double door made of mahogany, most like imported from the Amedio jungle, which led into what seemed to be a large study or library.

A tall and older elf, richly dressed in silks and an embroider cloak, wearing a golden chain with the Guild's symbol about his neck, stood in the middle of the room. He nodded first to Stimtrin then to the adventurers.

Once inside Stimtrin closed the doors and sighed heavily!

"My good sirs and ah... lady, welcome to the headquarters of the Merchant and Traders Union of Greyhawk. Though you may have guessed but I am Stimtrin Cannasay, assistant guildmaster. I do me best ta keep this guild free, respected, n' honest. We called ya in for your... well your, let us say, expertise in a certain matter which we canna deal wi' ourselves. Master Ren o' The star be kidnapped ya see. Most like by those he owes money from gambling losses no doubt. Snatched right outside the damnable gates! These unsavory ruffians meant ta extort money from the Guild... ta pay Ren's debts! Curse him n' them!!!"

The elf cleared his throat to cut the dwarf off!

He said "We know where Master o' Star is being held. It is dangerous work. If you should take this employment we will require two things. One, you must not speak of this to anyone. Two, you must bring Master o' Star to a tavern just outside the Cargo Gate and await our instructions. No one besides myself and Master Stimtrin will know why you were hired though many may guess. The pay is one hundred Orbs a piece... that and our... and perchance Master o' Star's deep appreciation."

The three were ushered into the presence of an Elf, and Deverick thought this might be Ren O Star, at first, but such was not the case.   Deverick and his two companions were given and ear full on what had happened before they arrived. What Deverick had thought was going to be a bodyguard job, was turning out to be a rescue mission. But he needed more information, before he decided to take this job.

“Good Sirs, be so kind as ta tell us wha went on er, afore we arrived. I saw signs of fightin, and it be right recent, too. I think me companions and me need the full story afore we decide. We needs ta know, ho it be that took em and such.” Said the tall Warrior in a serious tone of voice.

The elf looked from dwarf to maiden and back to Dev before he was about to speak but Stimtrin thought turnabout was fair play and cut him off.

"Ye 'ave ah good eye lad. Gelbrun Grobadore be right 'bout ye 'e is. Ren was abducted right from under our noses 'e was. Right outside before anyone could react save Ren 'imself. Cut down two before those bastards beat 'im down. another wont be us'n 'is right arm fer ah time unless 'e be know'n ah good cleric."

The well dressed elf held up a slender fingered hand, with rings upon four of the ten fingers.

"I am sorry, I forget myself, I am Dernen Nathane. Master merchant and I serve as an Oligarch upon Greyhawk's Council. What Assistant Guildmaster Cannasay said is true. However, there are only three uninjured ruffians left. One of the four was indeed wounded. We have paid good coin to find out where they are and know there exact location. the one behind it is a mage of low to middling power and these thugs work for him. The house is nigh indefensible as it sits in the heart of the Slum Quarter."

The dwarf added "They 'ave a street gang that acts as lookouts and first line o' defense but they nay be the problem. The three fighters left be veterans all. Your equals I say... then thar be ah mage. Ne'er trust ah mage!"

The elf frowned as the dwarf finished then shrugged his narrow shoulders.

"They will not be expecting a rescue this soon. The street gang should be naught for a group as talented and well armed as you. The fighters, though maybe your equal, should not stop you either. Surprise will be on your surprise. I shall raise your fees... say by fifty Orbs but not a Common more. That and see that any injuries are healed by potion or cleric... your choice. Yet, you must keep this quiet. Now before we divulge the location, what say you?"

The maiden and dwarf looked at Dev. It seemed he was now their defacto leader.

Well, Deverick got what he asked for, that was for sure. And the Elf just offered to raise the pay by fifty Golden Orbs, and that was just fine to the Warrior. He was half expecting them to say the Guild of Thieves had Ren, and if that had been the case, he would have declined the job. He was not afraid of much, but if the Thieves Guild had been behind this matter, Deverick would have asked for much more money.

He looked to The Elf and Dwarf offering them the Job.” If me comrades av no objections, I be saying that one hundred and fifty Orbs be fine by me. I be doin the job of brigin back Master Ren fer ya.” Said the Large Warrior.

As if he had this as an afterthought, Deverick looked at their new Paymasters. “ Th Guild o Thieves be not behind this er thing, right?”

"Ye 'ave ah right ta be worried lad. Right as rain! Only the gods know if'n the thieves be behind it. Might be they are! Yet I'd ne'er send ya in there blind lad. Sides be'n bad fer business, if I did that ole Gelbrun 'ave me balls in ah vise afore Celene rose on high."

The elf then nodded, it seemed for once these two agreed!

"We paid good coin for our information. If the thieves were behind it they have hidden that fact very well indeed. Ren has many enemies but from what I know he and Nerof Gasgal, Mayor and Master Thief, are on the best of terms. Now then, do we have a deal?"

So either they did not know if the Guild of Thieves where behind this abduction, or they are lying to the three Mercs. Deverick needed the coin, as did his two companions. When he was asked if they had a deal, the large Warrior looked for a nod from his two companions, before he spoke again. When he knew they were for it, Deverick addressed the  Fancy dressed Elf. “ Aye, we av a bargain.” The Warrior held out his massive arm to clasp with the Elf to seal the deal.

The elf, Dernen Nathane, nodded and for the first time smiled as he said "Very good then. Master Stimtrin the strong box if you please."

The dwarf went to a stout desk made of the same dark polished wood as the double doors leading into the office and unlocked a drawer. He lifted out a sturdy metal box and using a second key opened it. The dwarf began to search as the elf called out a second time.

"A third now Master Stimtrin. Best make it platinum. Fifty Orbs would add unwanted weight and noise."

The dwarf gave the elf a curt nod and mumbled under his breath, what sounded like a curse in Dangmir to Dev, before finding the right sack which had the familiar clink of coin to the mercenaries ears.

"'Ere ye go!" Master Stimtrin said gruffly as he handed the sack to the elf.

Master Dernen then counted ten platinum Plates in three separate stacks. He then handed the stacks to Ovo, Blossom, and Dev respectively.

"You all will receive the remaining two thirds when Master Ren has been safely dropped off to the Sullen Selkie tavern just out side the Cargo Gate. The proprietor is well known to us. Have him send word and we will contact you there. Any further questions?"

The elf was about to speak but the dwarf interrupted him.

"It be ah mage by the name of Kee Arkguard. O' midling power he be. We have reason's ta believe that he holds ah residence in the Artisan Quarter. Our spies have sent word he still be there. Mayhaps ta absolve 'im of any involvement. That be good fer ye. Now then he 'as been seen wi' ah half-orc cleric n' it be 'er that 'as Ren methinks. Kee would nay stoop ta geting 'is robes dirty methinks."

Master Dernen cleared his throat.

"Maybe the mage is there or not. For sure the fighters and cleric will be. Yet, I think no matter who is there they will be not swayed by our word or any token we give you. I will however give my ring. It has our Union's crest upon it and Ren at least will recognize it. The house is located on Kilcat Lane. My advice is to get a guide from the Beggar's Union. No doubt such a guide will know the way. Also most street gangs will allow you passage as long as a beggar accompanies you."

Master Stimtrin added "Save for any gang these ruffians 'ave paid off least ways."

The door opened and several youths, obvious apprentices of the Merchant And Traders Union, came in carrying the lanterns and Ovo's bow. The lanterns appeared to be square metal boxes but  Master Stimtrin showed the mercenaries how they worked. By twisting a knob on the top he released a spring and the box sprang up. Inside was a crystal upon which a continual light spell had been laid. There would be no need for oil then! With another twist of the knob and by pressing the top and bottom together, the lantern closed and the light was no longer seen.

Ovo examined the crossbow and found that it was unlike any the dwarf had ever seen. It had a long trough to the side which contained nine bolts. A crank on the side brought the bow string back and locked it in place but also brought a bolt into the firing channel. Basically every time the bow was crank, it loaded a bolt to be fired. It had a trigger that would release the bow and fire the bolt but it loaded itself saving the operator time.

The dwarf whistled and smiled deviously but Master Dernen reminded him these items were on loan and not their property.

"Now then... I feel you must be off. Ren's life, though safe for now, is still in danger. The sooner you are on your way the sooner he will be rescued. May Norebo and Nay Ralishaz watch over you this eve."

Deverick accepted the coins and ring, both which where placed into his large belt pouch.

The items produced by the youths, where a marvel to behold. The Lanterns where magical and that almost took Deverick’s breath away. He had seen magic before, but it still sent a thrill through him, when he was around it. He operated one of the Lanterns and nodded.

“Aye, it be time fer us ta earn our pay.  We will take our leave of ye, good Sirs. Fare well.”

Deverick gave the high sign that he hoped his two companions would pick up on. He would lead the small group to the gates, and out into the street. The large Warrior looked to the Dwarf and Northern Warrior Maid.

“Right, we needs ta swing by the Black gate, ta see if a certain beggar be there. He might be fer hire as a guide.” Said Dev, as he then headed down the street at a good stride.

It seemed as the trio made their way through the Black Gate one more time, the Watch manning the Gate just waved them through the dark tunnel to the other side. The Watchman named Betram gave Dev a curt nod this time though. As they made the New City side, Sol was rapidly heading for the western horizon. Dev's eyes spotted the young beggar manning what Dev thought to be his post, just outside the Black gate. Tal saw the big warrior and gave him a friendly wave. As they approached he spoke, not overly loud but loud enough for Deverick to hear.

"She hasn't come back yet. Yet, it's early. She'll be along t'm thinking. The little one I mean. I bet she's a gnome. That would be my guess. You want me to tell her where to meet you... or just mislead her. I never knew if that's what you want."

Tal's eyes bulged and not for the first time today. Deverick knew the boy had made a killing off him alone. Why the big warrior had given the young beggar one gold Orb, two silver Nobles, and the promise of another silver coin. Probably more than Tal would make in a week or two. As the beggar's hand reached for the promised coin, it froze midway.

"I... I would love ta guide ya Dev... what I mean ta say is I will guide but first we must be to the Beggar's Union. If we are to ply the Slum Quarter's streets, we must first get the Master's permission. Now it will cost you a few gold coins. There's no way around that but you'll have Master Gaspar's blessing and mayhaps his friendship to boot!"

The young beggar looked from barbarian to dwarf. Both seemed fine with letting Dev decide.

Seeing this Tal renewed his case.

"We could try to go around Gaspar on this but most like he'll find out. Gaspar has eyes and ears everywhere and not just in the Slum Quarter. Our Master be a bright fellow Dev. He can be reasoned with if treated fairly... as ah equal. If you should anger him, your enemies wil always find you. Thieves will rob you, the watch will arrest you on some false charge, and he might just persuade the Mercs' to drop you as well."

The beggar boy, made a good case for his suggested course of action. But then again, Blossom pointed out that they had to be discrete. No matter which way Deverick decided, it seems someone was going to be vexed with him. Ovo’s comments showed, while the Dwarf might be a capable Warrior, he knew nothing of how Greyhawk worked.

“Well, Tal as a goodly point er. He be part o th Beggar’s Guild, en if he guides us without the Union Master Gaspard’s blessing, it be th worse fer him. It be th worse fer us, more as like, too. Gaspard be the Lord o th Slums. He be like some uppity noble with es own fiefdom. We needs ta pay homage ta em, without tipping our hand to em.”

Deverick leaned over and patted Tal on the shoulder. “Aye, we needs ta offer tribute ta the King o the Beggar’s. But Tal, will Gaspard be satisfied with us paying our respects and tribute, or will e be sniffin why we be in th slums?”

Deverick was in the hopes the King of the Beggars would take his due, and let them go on without revealing the purpose. Deverick would not betray that purpose, as it would give all three a bad name in the Merc business.

Deverick could understand where Ovo was coming from, but this was how things where done in this city. If the wanted to succeed in this endeavor, they had to pay the price of admission to the Slums. The Warrior looked to the Dwarf.

“ Ovo, it be like this. If ye wants ta be able ta do something right, ya got ta pay fer the tools ta gets th job done. We need ta be able ta travel in th slums without hind being buggered by th locals.  It be like if ye wanted ta dig a new shaft seekin a vein o gold or silver. Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The border between the Thieves' Quarter and the Slum Quarter was ill-defined and the twisting and turnings of the alleys and gangways of Greyhawk's Slum Quarter were such that anyone not intimately familiar with them would be lost in minutes. Even the thieves avoided its crumbling ruins and decrepit shacks. Beggars, crazy men, and the desperate were the elites of its inhabitants. Tal suggested that they remained on the main thoroughfares for as long as possible.

They passed by several places of note like Stairnezh Stables on Assassins’ End where an adventurer could rent/ buy a horse or hire a wagon. Then past Fedroot’s Daggerarium, home to the best bladesmith in the city. here one could purchase masterwork blades, mainly daggers, for high prices but no one could doubt the quality of his work. As the band closed in on the Beggar Union Dev could hear shrill high whistles which Tal quickly answered. A few thin urchins in threadbare rags displaced themselves from the shadows but as soon as Tal showed his wooden hand they backed off! Soon they were swallowed up by the same shadows.

Tal whispered "We've been seen but its okay. The sentries will let us pass!

A few long breaths later the Beggars Union was before them. It wass more of a blockhouse than Guildhall and looked like it could resist a siege. The large front door loomed before them but Tal waved them off.

"There's a side door, though heavily guarded, that will get us to the throne room all the quicker!" he said in a conspiratorial tone.

They were ushered down a narrow alleyway, full of muck and refuse. The stink nearly made the adventurers gag from the smell. Even Tal held his nose but waved off the maiden's protests.

"Just to keep people away... the door is... there!"

The door blended into the wall quite well. However, after a few coded knocks, what sounded like a bar being removed and the portal swung inward. The hall beyond was narrow and two hulking brutes, one with an eye patch and another missing his left hand barred their way. After a brief but heated conversation with Tal, the party was allowed down it and in the throne room itself.

The hallway opened up into a wide room with thick rugs upon the floor and tapestries hung upon the walls. Though once of fine quality, they had lost some of their striking beauty. In fact, the whole place appeared a weird parody of a rich nobleman's court. Like the room, the man upon the stained but worn throne at first glance passed for a baron or count from Furyondy or Nyrond but upon closer inspection he was only... the Master of Beggars! Gaspar was bald and heavy set being about 5 feet and 8 inches tall and weighing 220 lbs. He dressed in tattered and gaudy silks and faded finery. Rings of gold and silver were scattered about his pudgy fingers.  He scowled at Tal, Dev, and the others. Tal rushed forward and bowed low in deference.

"These fine folk require a guide through your realm Master Gaspar. They are willing to pay for the privilege. I beg you speak with them."

Gaspar's frown turned to indifference at the mention of payment.

"Come!" he said a waved them forward. "Welcome! How may we help you this fine eve?"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The young beggar led the trio of Mercs on a tour of the lousy end of the city, or so thought Deverick. The only real place that gave him pause, was the when the famous Fedroot’s Daggerarium came into view. Deverick always wanted one of the blades made in that place. Perhaps with hard work, some God’s favor, and luck, he might own one someday. It would definitely be a status symbol within the city.

When the group finally arrived in front of the infamous Beggar’s Union, they were challenged by, of all things, more beggars. Dev made sure his sword was  loose in the scabbard…just in case. The trip down the fetid alley made Dev really about to lose his dinner, but they all made it to the end, and the hidden door.

The interior of the Court of Miracles, was about what the Warrior had expected, But the rotund figure that sat perched upon a throne, looked more like a side of beef then a Lord. But for all that, the rings of precious metal the figure sported, spoke volumes to Devereck. When bidden forward by Jaspar, to state their business, Dev seemed to be the elected spokesmen for the group, He marched forward, and came to a stop at what he thought a respectful distance from the throne. He made a slight bow, not really sure one showed respect to a Lord.

“ Hail, and well met, Lord Gaspar. I be Deverick, son of Borcar the Smith. We be here ta pay our respects ta ye, Sir. That, and we wish ta hire this here lad, to act as our guide this night. We be ready ta pay ye tribute fer the  lad’s services, Sir.” Dev bowed again to the figure upon the throne.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Gaspar smiled at Dev's words and bid him rise. About the "throne room" were many unwashed and scrawny urchins not unlike Tal himself. These young lads loitered about in groups of three or four and many looked upon the mercenaries with something of a mixture betwixt awe and fear. A few whispered under their breath.

"Please call me... Master Gaspar. I am no Oligarch or noble true. Yet, Tal was wise to bring you before me for I am not only master here... within these walls but the Slum Quarter is my domain as well. I have it in writing from the Guild Master of thieves himself. Before we begin negotiations I must bring in my advisers."

The heavy set Beggar Master reached for a small silver bell sitting upon a side table and rang it daintily. In just a few heartbeats two individuals came in from a door behind the throne itself. One was an older man, he had perhaps seen forty winters, sporting several days growth upon his chin and cheeks, with short cropped grey hair, and an eye patch over his left eye. He stood a finger-width below six feet tall and heavy set wearing worn wool and leather clothes. The other was somewhat taller and gaunt with his secondhand tunic and breeches hanging from his frame like a scarecrow. His string black hair, streaked with gray, fell to his shoulders and made his pallid skin seem all the whiter. Dev guessed this one never saw the light of day. Both bowed to Gaspar.

Gaspar merely nodded in return. "This is Diarmid  and Simeon."   Pointing first to "patch" and then to "scarecrow".

"They are my trusted advisers. Now you may further explain your needs. Such as... where shall young Tal be leading you? And of course... how much you are willing to pay for his services?"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The game had begun, or as the Master of the Beggars called it, negotiations. Deverick had never been higher than a Corporal, so he knew how to give orders, and fight. Never before, had the big man had to barter with some. Oh, he had seen is father and elder brother haggle over prices at the forge, but he was always an observer.

“ Master Gaspar, we three be members o th Guild o Mercenaries. We be in th Slums ta do a job  fer someone, but we be made to promise, not ta say what it be about. Ye av me word, what it be will av no effect on ye and yours. I swear by Tritheron, it be so. As ta th rate o pay, we av light purses, but we can pay some to ye. What say two Orbs er each o us.?”

Deverick was doing his best to imitate his father in a haggle. He did recall that one started low in the price.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Gaspar and his two advisers listened intently to Dev as he explained their reason for being inside the Beggar Master's realm and the price for a guide. Gaspar kept a smile upon his face as the tall and gaunt adviser leaned to him and whispered into his master's ear. Gaspar merely nodded.

"Sounds like a fair offer... " he purred. "... from the Guild of mercenaries eh? Well that's a start. Do you have your badges to show me? I am sure your... employer would like to keep this matter... quiet but as I have said, I am master of this place and quarter. All things that happen here I am responsible for you see? So I must know a bit more of your... quest if you will, before a proper price can be set. If you must keep some things secret then the price must be higher. I am sure you understand. After all, Tal is very useful to me. That's why he has the post at the Black Gate. I will not risk his well being blindly."

Gaspar brought his pudgy fingers to form a steeple under his double chin.

"Well... what more may you tell me without breaking your pledge? You must at least tell your destination. Then we may set a price."

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Dev  listened as the Master of Beggars laid out, what was what. Gaspar wanted more information, and Dev knew the conditions of his employment. All three of the Mercs where supposed to keep their mouths shut, when it came to the who, what, where and when, of this contract.

The large Warrior was trying to think fast upon his feet. While Deverick was far from being a lack wit, no one would ever accuse him of being a great thinker, either. He tried a different approach to the others questions.

“ Meaning nay, disrespect to ye,Master Gaspar, but that be about all I can tell ye,and remain true to me paymasters. Like I says, it be nothing against ye and yours, but it do be in yer area. I can’t tell ye where we be agoin, but ye will knows soon enough, young Tal be under no obligation ta keep it secret. As fer payment, th night be flowing as we speak  er. Th best we can do fer yer blessing, be five orbs o head. If that be not enough, I av skills as a blacksmith, we might work out a trade er something.”

The Warrior played his cards upon the table, with the Lord of the Beggars. He decided he hated haggling, felt he had no skill at it. But he could at least take out his badge of the Guild and offer it for inspection by Gaspar and his creatures.

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

Gaspar's slight smile retreated slowly at the warrior's words.

"Well... that is disappointing Deverick, son of Borcar. yet, some things can not be helped. So that will be fifteen Orbs if my mind is right?"

Gaspar's eyes flicked toward the pale gaunt man who nodded.

Gaspar then turned his full attention back to Deverick and his companions.

"Very well, fifteen Orbs. You must also pay Tal's fee and vouch for his safe return. If he is harmed in any way or your quest effects my business or rule of this quarter I shall take action... swift action mind, against you and there will be no where in Greyhawk you may hide."

The Beggar Master then turned to the grayed hair man with the patch.

"Borcar the smith? His smithy lies in the Thieves' Quarter does it not?"

The adviser with a patch nodded in turn. "It does as it has done so for years Master Gaspar. Though Borcar has recently gone to meet the gods, his oldest now runs the business."

Gaspar again smiled though it did not reach his eyes this time.

"Ahhhh... such things are good to know. It is well Deverick that you know this as well... if you take my meaning. Cause me no trouble and we can be friends for you seem to be a honest man. However, cross me or cause me pain and pain I shall return tenfold!"

Gaspar then sat back against his throne and folded his pudgy hands in his lap.

"Deal?" he purred once more.

"HERE!" she shouted, throwing three platinum Plates at the foot of the beggar master's throne.

"Dat be your payment yah? No more threats den. Vee go now! Vee go Deverick yah?"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

During the entire meeting with the Lord of the Beggars, Deverick’s body language and attitude had been one of frank but polite. But when the Gaspar bespoke of the consequences, if Borcar crossed him, the large Warrior stiffened, and  his face went into a stoic expression. His normally brilliant eyes became dull in tone. It was obvious the large Warrior was angry, but before he said something he would regret, something his old Drill Master had taught them in the Militia.

“ Choose the time and place for a battle, never let the enemy have an advantage.”

In this hall, all the advantages where with Jaspar, so all Dev did, was give a curt nod to the beggar king.

Ovo nearly snarled as he followed suit and dug three platinum Plates from his own pouch.

"'Ere ye go! Best we be go'n afore we out stay our welcome!"

He turned on his heels and left down the narrow hallway.

Once outside the dwarf spat once more.

"That bastard made more from us than 'e did fer the whole month o' Coldeven. Yet, the law is older than yer blade! An'ther time n' place."

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

When the trio had departed the Court of Miracles, Deverick was still seething with anger, His temper was not short, but the way he took the Beggar King’s words, as a threat to his family. He would drench that stink hole that Gaspar called  a Court,  in lakes of blood, if anything happened to one of his kin.

It was obvious that he showed his feelings, when Blossom showed concern and offered to be his….Shield Maiden? Well, he had no idea what that was, but he really liked the sound of it.
“Aye, ye can be me ..Shield Maiden, Blossom. I be honored ta have ye as such.”

Deverick leaned down to Tal,and whispered their destination in the Beggar boy’s eat. “We be heading ta Kilcat lane, Lad. There be a gang  that might  be right hostile, if ye get ma meaning.”

Deverick had taken a liking to the scalawag of a beggar boy, in the short time he had known him. But he had to keep the terms of the contract, if at all possible. So, he had to remain vague as to the exact house they were interested in.

Tal's eyes went wide at the name... Kilcat Lane! Yet, to the lad's credit, he recovered quickly and nodded.

"Aye! I know the place. It not be overly far ya see but it be the territory of a right nasty gang... young Street rats mostly but dangerous none the less. They use to be behold'n ta Gaspar yet no more. Their leader be named Owlbear and that be the gang's name ta boot."

The young boy paused a heartbeat to size up Deverick and nodded once more.

"Your his match Dev. I know it! You can best him n' if you do, well Gaspar will be mighty pleased he would."

He looked from warrior, to dwarf, to maiden, and back to Dev once more. The young beggar licked his tongue in excitment before he spoke.

"Since... since you all be need'n your hands free for weapons n' such, may I hold the magic lantern? I swear by Olidammara! I'll not break it. Can I please?"

Deverick The Bold... So It Begins!

The conversation between his companions and Tal flew around him, as Deverick girded his mind for what he knew was the coming bloodletting. When Tal told them about the gang they might have to face, Dev just shrugged.

“I av no quarrel with em, but if they gets in O way, let what appens, be on their heads.”

The sound of oiled metal rasping upon leather was heard in the dark of night. Deverick slowly drew the Great Sword forged by the hammer of his father. It was Deverick’s most cherished possession, and he cared for it like it might be his own child. A grim look of determination was cast upon the Warrior’s face.

“Right, this be how it be. Let Tal use the Lantern, and av a care lad, we got em on loan. We move fast and as quiet as possible. I hope ta take these whore sons by surprise, iffin th Gods will it.”

Deverick drew his Dagger and offered it hilt first to the Beggar boy.
" Here Lad, ye av a blade I be sure. But this er dagger be a proper weapon fer a fight. Use it if ye must, but try not ta get into the mess commin. Now, lead on Lad, lead on.”
said the Warrior with a smile, and tousle of the boy’s head.
