The Sullen Selkie!

After Dev convinced the bouncer, a stocky mariner with a hook for a left hand, that he was harmless and that he indeed had the "package", he opened the solid door to let the party into the shadowy bar. Inside the bar everything was almost hidden in shadows. The only light came from the hearth and baskets filled with the glowing organs of fire beetles. The place smelled of stale beer and a savory fish stew.

A small fire burned quietly sending smoke into the bar's interior, which only added to the darkness and black mood of the bar. Against the far wall, enclosed sections had been set aside as secret rooms for those who wanted more privacy.

A long bar stood against the left wall and was half filled with sailors, rogues, longshoremen, and every other type of scum in Shack Town. The bartender was a small human with pox marks covering his face. He nodded to Dev but didn't say anything, as if he was trying to figure out who they were or remember if he had seen them before. Finally the bouncer spoke up.

"Master Nathane sent'em boss. They 'ave the package!" he said hitching a thumb over his shoulder at Ren.

"Not so loud dolt!" spat the barkeep. "Awright, go ta the end o' the bar. I'll bring ya drinks. Then go to one o' the stalls fer privacy. You in charge big'un?"

When the group gained access to the interior of the tavern, it reminded Dev more of a tomb, then tap room. The Innkeeper asked if Dev was in charge, why did everyone ask if he was in charge? Deverick only considered himself in charge of Deverick, not the rest of them. But he had to give the man an answer.

" Aye, and at the same time, nay. We be equals in this er job, but I can speak fer em in most things. We could all use a bloody drink, I be thinkin. C'mon lads."

Deverick went over and sat down at a stall, but he attempted to position himself so as not to be surprised if this went south.

The old tapster came over, his beady eyes taking in the group with quick furtive glances. Finally he cleared his throat.

"That's wot we got! So makes up yer minds n' be quick!" be nearly shouted while he pointed to a sign over the bar:

Dragon Piss: 2 cumenz (cp)
Pike's Ale: 4 cumenz (cp)
Rusty Whiskey: 1 noble (sp)

In a much lower voice he said "I'll be right back ta talk once I get the drinks."

Glancing around and seeing the other patrons going about their business he smiled, it did little to make his pox marked face look better.

"There's trouble about n' Ren be just the tip o' the dragon's tail."

Ren gave the barkeep a wink "Pike's ale if you please."

Ovo scoffed at the Master Merchant "That's yer best. Nay! Rusty whiskey fer me... make it a double!"

Blossom shook her head but her smile yook some of the sting out of the glare in her ice blue eyes.

"Vell dat settles it! I vas vanting da vhiskey but mac mine ah ale. Nuth'n Ovo vould drink could be gud."

The tapster looked to Dev "N' you big'un... wot fer ye then?"

The tapster left to gather the drinks and the tavern seemed to return to the muffled conversations, the ribald laughter, and the occasional argument betwixt patrons. Ren looked about the place and then shrugged.

"I know no one here this eve. I have been here before. The barkeep and I have an arrangement of sorts. I helped him raise funds for this place and he was to provide me with information... about trade and other things a merchant may wish to know. The merchant who knows of goods that will enter Greyhawk before others usually makes the biggest profit. That and he was to allow me to stay when I was in need of a place to hide away for a while."

He then lowered his voice.

"I trust the old elf and the dwarf mind... well mostly but someone on the inside aided my abduction. No doubt that's why they suggested bringing me here. Now that is bad enough but... a visitor came to see the cleric just hours before you rescued me. I over heard them through the wall. The cleric was to ransom me back to the Union but this visitor suggested a different plan altogether. He stated that he wished to use me... supplant me really with another who would take my place upon the ruling council. How would they do this... my guess would be magic. Why? I know not, only that someone he named only SHE wished it."

Deverick listened to Ren O Star discuss intrigues within the Merchant circles, and perhaps even the government itself. Such talk made his head spin and throb with a forming headache. He really wanted a drink, even the ditch water then dive offered would be welcome about now. He regarded Ren and spoke in a low tone of voice.

" Sir, ye speak o matters far bove our lots concerns. We jus be common mercs, just plain folk. If wha ye suspect be right, that be right en proper treason. Ye needs ta tell th high en mighty o th city, nay disrepute fer yer class offered."

That tankard of ditch water could not get here soon enough.

Ren sat back in his seat and looked casually around. Then he said in a hush tone of his own.

"Just which high n' mighty would that be lad? What if this was not just an isolated incident. What if others have been replaced already. I know the mayor fairly well as I game at his establishment The Golden Wheel quite often. I think I would know if he was not he... if you know what I mean."

Ovo arched a brow "Well jus how does this involve us? We be jus Merc's like Deverick said."

"I have to lay low. I need someone as a go between... someone who I can trust to run messages from me to the Union and mayhaps the Mayor himself. I have already offered you all double your fee... "

"Three hundred Orbs yah?" interjected Blossom.

"Fine! Three hundred orbs and a place in the merchant guard or I will sponsor a foray into Castle Greyhawk itself and I will ask only a 10% return instead of the customary 20%. Your choice."

The more Deverick heard, the less he liked it. Intrigues, plots, skulduggery, he liked none of these things. Ren was attempting to pull all three of them into deep murky waters. He was beginning to regret he had ever met Ren O Star. He looked to his companions, then decided to speak up.

"Sir, ye be talking bout matters way over me simple head, not sure bout me companions. Could ye let us talk bout this betwixt ourselves afore we decide.?"

When he was out of earshot, Ovo arched a brow.

"Wot's ye got against the offer Deverick? I know it's Hilords n' all but gold is gold. If Ren sponsored us ta check out Castle Greyhawk we could all have gnomish bows, lanterns, n' who knows what else."

Blossom set back and crossed her arms over her ample busom.

Deverick scratched his bald head, his thoughts in a twist for the possibilities of what this may involve. He really want a drink by now, truth be told, he wanted several drinks.

"I knows this much.  Deverick just hoped he would not regret his decision.

When Ren came back with the tapster in tow, the latter holding a tray laden with the variety of drinks they ordered.

Ren sat down with a nod but held his tongue. Mayhaps the Master Merchant was waiting until the table was their's and their's alone.

As the barkeep, handing out the drinks, said "The Rhennee have gathered in great numbers. The whole world is turn' upside down. Heard the ambassador to Furyondy was kilt yestereve. Rumors be that it was Turin Deathstalker that did the deed. Him an Oligarch n' all."

He shook his head sadly and said "Should I send word ta the Union then Master Ren?"

Ren nodded "Aye! We'll be fine for now Finn. I call ya for some of that fine fish-stew ya make in half a mo'"

Once he was gone Ren looked to each adventurer in turn and then said "Well? What decision have you made?"

The Tapster set the drinks in front of the three Mercs and Master Ren. The latest rumors where tossed out there, and the one about the Rhennee gathering, interested Deverick.

Ren asked what decision they had arrived at. Dev took a long pull of the Ale, even it was welcome,at this point. He looked to Ovo and Blossom, then to Ren.

"We talks it over, en we av a few concerns afore we tells ye our decision. We be fer runnin yer errands, facing reasonable danger, Nay Dragons, demons, and such. We nay will do anything against Greyhawk or er interests. we wants healing if we be injured while in yer service. If on o us gets chopped, we wants a decent send off, nay dumpin in the river en its like. If we be leavin yer service, we twill give ye notice, and ye give us th same, if ye discharges us. If ye meets these conditions, we be fer it."

Deverick hated talking so much. He took another long draw on the tankard of ale.

Ren looked to each adventurer in turn. Finally he smiled and raised his tankard of ale in a salute.

"Fair enough good folk, fair enough. For now I want you to wait here until the messenger from the Union arrives. As far as they are concerned you are finished. The messenger will bring the other one hundred and fifty orbs they owe you when he returns. For now I am not sure who to trust. Your first mission is to take a letter to the Lord Mayor. Not directly mind, but to the Golden Wheel and leave it for him there. I will arrange a meeting in that letter. Then you can return to Mercenary Guild or elsewhere... just leave word where you can be reached with Gelburn. That way no one will know you're connected with me but I can reach you when needed."

The merchant took a long drag from his ale and made a face as if he tasted something sour.

"I shall cover your stay here. There is a spacious more luxurious suite for my guests in the back. Finn will take care of you. Any questions thus far?"

I will know more after I have talked to members of the Union and the Mayor. He has connections to all the other Oligarchs as well as to the Thieve's Guild itself. If anybody should have an ear to the door it should be them."

His eyes then widened "Say? The guide that led us this eve... he was from the Beggar's Union was he not? They have eyes and ears all over Greyhawk. Mayhaps he can help. I'll see if I can get you some coin you can use as bribes. Mayhaps you can pay Gaspar a visit. What say you?"

"You're right lad. We'll just use the little guide then. I'd rather see gold go to his pouch than Gaspar's anyway. Now we must have a care if Gaspar knew his role that lad could get hurt or worse. Best meet him outside the Old City then to cut down on the risks. Now, then you must keep your eyes and ears open. Any rumor... no matter how big or small might lead to a useful clue. You can either reach me here or leave word at the Green Dragon Inn. The proprietor is a friend of mine and be trusted."

That's when Dev saw a rather unusual sight! The hook-handed doorman let in another patron to the Selkie. She, for her curves left no doubt of that, was on the short side for a gnome... or could she be a halfling? Yet there was no mistaking thick mane of bright copper-red curls that seem determined to defy restraint, the leather armor, and a belt with numerous small, tasseled pouches sewn to it. As their eyes met she smiled and gave the big warrior a wink.

"If ye needs tales o what goes on,wha bout the Guild o Thieves? Bugger the Beggars Guild, hire th Thieves ta be yer eyes,or jus one Thief. If ye av ta spend coin, they be th best at knowing things, in me opinion."

Deverick was a native of the city, and the Guild of Thieves was just another Guild to him. Where such a Guild would be shunned and thought badly of by citizens, in most other cities, in Greyhawk, is was just another organization.

Ren held up a warding hand "Fear not brave Deverick we shall not use young Tal... Talbert. We will find another way. I shall know what the thieves know after I correspond with the Mayor. He is a thief in good standing. There are those that say the Guild runs the city and mayhaps it is true. Though three members of the Merchants Union, besides myself of course sit upon the Council of Oligarchs buttwo of those take bribes from Org and the thieves but which two I know not. This way they may have a majority in any vote."

Then he held up a finger. Then took off his right boot. He then turned the heel until a small object fell from it's cleverly hidden spot. Ren held his palm and unpon it was a small gem... white... opaque... a pearl!

"Here! Give this to Tal. The young lad helped us all more than we know. I shall not be niggardly in my reward. It is worth a 100 orbs! Yet, small enough for him to hide from Gaspar's greedy eyes. You may say it's from you Deverick. Without you I would be last least ways. It should do the boy some good."

Then the pox faced taspter approached the table with a nug of ale upon the tray.

"Master Deverick I presume? From the red haired lass across the common room."

It was the red-haired gnome who winked when Dev gazed in that direction.

Tess bowed back deeply "I am at your service and your family's Master Goldenshield. However, I must decline the whiskey as I have yet to finish this wonderful ale."

Dev recognized that the gnome answered the dwarf's greeting in the proper dwarven fashion.

"Most wise Deverick. You are right as rain. Normally they would not let you in. Yet, with my letter and this ring, you should gain entrance without any problems. I doubt Nerof  will be there. However, there is another to ask for. His name Evran Hawkwood. A halfelf like meself. He is the manager. He'll get the message to the Mayor. You'll wait one day and return for the answer and bring it to me. I should have some answers from the Merchant's Union by then as well. Then we can decide from there. Deverick had a look of total surprise when the Tapster brought him the purse. He looked to his belt, and sure enough, the strings had been cut as neatly as a Fishmonger that slit open a trout. His first reaction was a deep frown, but the more he thought about it, he found himself starting to smile. The smile then turned into a laugh.

"By th Gods, she ad on one me. I twas not very polite ta er, since it ad been a bloody long evnin, so she payed me back fer me bad manners, en showed her strip at Th same time. Aye, the little shyt called Tess might be trusted, but not very bloody far."

He knew it would haunt him for many nights to come. But for now, he had ale, and a jest on him by colorfully dressed Gnome, called Tess. So he laughed and drank.

The Sullen Selkie!

The group settled down for a night of drinking, fish stew, and swapping stories if not a few lies between companions that had become brothers of the sword. Ovo spoke of stories he had heard coming out of Hardby... that orcs were raiding the Wild Coast out of The Pormarj. Ren speculated that there was money to made running weapons, supplies, and mercenaries to that savage land. Blossom wanted know more about the Greyhawk Castle and how long had adventurers been making their fortunes among those notorious ruins. Again Ren explained that a Mad Mage had made the place and no doubt wild magic still ran amok there. The Master Merchant went so far to say that he and other merchants of the Union had sponsored various adventuring companies with mixed results. Some came back with enough coin to buy mansions in the High Quarter while others had not come back at all.

Of Tess there was no sign, she had mayhaps slipped away or was hiding in one of the shadowy corners of the common room. Dev wondered what his aunt could want and why so many of the barge folk were now tied up on the docks outside. Were they here for some sort of meeting? Was there coming just a coincidence with all the upheaval within the walls of Greyhawk City.

At last the night ran on and the group were led to their suite. There were three beds complete with feather pillows and blankets. A single oil lamp did little to keep the shadows at bay. Finn bid them good night and closed the door.

"The whiskey... waaas gud!" exclaimed the dwarf. "'N tomorrow we'll get our coin. From nuth'n to having nearly five hundred gold! With promise o' more ta come."

When they were setted and the dwarf's snores sounded more like an angry owlbear's stomach, Blossom spoke in a hush tone.

"Da Castle? Dat's vere vee vill make our coin. I need coin Bocarsen n' lot of it. Vhat do ya dink? You are from here yah? Is our chances gud?"

What he wanted to do was visit the publuc bathes in the city early in the morn before they attempted to gain entrance to the High Quarter and the Golden Wheel. But that was for tomorrow, He had just gotten comfortable in his bed, when Blossom spoke to him about the famous or infamous Castle Greyhawk.

"Aye, there be plenty o tales bout Castle Greyhawk. Some says ye can get as rich as a Lord, if fortune be wit ye. But ye can also get as dead as as dead can be,as well. There be stores o fierce creatures that roam that place. Dev fell asleep to Blossom's sniffles and Ovo's rumbling snores. The morning found them well and rested for all had truly spent a night in worse conditions. Finn ushered them inside the common room, now quite empty save for a few drunks who had not made it far from the tables where they had drunk the night before. The tapster reheated some more of his famous fish stew, but grumbling from Ovo and an offer of a handsome tip from the maiden brought forth some scrambled eggs and fresh baked bread besides. However, all that was to drink was water or ale.

Not long after they had filled their bellies a man entered the room, no doubt the courier from the Merchant Union. Along with the runner came three armed swords from the Merchant Guard. Finn directed the man toward the three sitting by themselves.

"You are Deverick, Blossom, and Ovo then?" he asked. "I've got coin for each of you. The total being four hundred and fifty gold each. Most is measured out in platinum coins but we've left fifty of it in golden orbs so it can spend all the easier. That and my master's thanks of course. Will you do me a favor then?"

Dev found himself actually holding his breath,as he received his share of coin. Never before, in his short life, had he thought to have such a handsome sum in his grasp. The Courier gave the thanks of his "Master" and his. Deverick nodded in way of a response, but then an interesting thing happened, the Courier asked them do do him a favor.

"I be sure I be speaking fer us all, when I says thank ye, and be thanking yer Master fer his open purse. As fer yer favor,we av ta hear ye,affore we decide on it."

The group took their leave of the Sullen Selkie, with Ren still nursing a hangover. Blossom stopped and flipped Finn a platinum plate to the tapster. His eyes doubled in size and he stammered.

"Do... do... do come again!" he said with a smile and wink.

The party made the Cargo Gate along with a throng of others waiting to Enter the Gem of the Flanese. Some were merchants or traders bringing their goods into the city from faraway places such as the Ulek states, Furyondy, Veluna, and the Free City of Dyvers. Some were fishermen who brought the days catch to be sold in the Petit Bazaar. Others were just simple travelers who wished to do business or enjoy the pleasures that the city of Greyhawk could provide.

It took nearly the better part of two hours to get through the Cargo Gate, but for once the watchmen seeing their Mercenary Badges waved them through without question. From the Cargo Gate it was only a stone throw to one of the many side streets that led off the main street aptly named the Strip. It was here that many taverns, inns, brothels, and gambling dens were located. It was here on Dim Lane that Deverick would find the small tavern known as The Widow's Rest.

As the trio waited at the Cargo gate to enter the city, Deverick had time to think things over. He felt the three of t hem had crossed the threshold into deep waters of political intrigue. They had no idea of who might be an enemy or friend except perhaps Ren O Star. And even that one,Dev had his doubts about. But the Oligarch had make them a lucrative offer, and Dev had seized upon it with the consent of his two companions. He had more coin from the brief dealing with Ren then he had seen in his entire life.

He was also concerned about why his aunt wanted to see him,and why the Rhennee clans where gathering. Dev had not seen his aunt since his last leave from the Militia, and that had been over a year ago. But here he was, heading for her tavern.

The Tavern called The Widows Rest was located on Dim Lane. Deverick knew the place well enoght from visiting it when he had been on leave. He opened the door and lead the trio into the coolness of its interior.

One stepped forth from the group and hailed Deverick in the Rhennee tongue.

"My name is Silviu! I am of the Blood of Dmitri Volanis. He would have a word with you. OH! It is not about Rogio either. We have warned him about his robust ways. There is something you should know. Then you can tell whoever you wish or no one at all. It is up to you. Dmitri extends you this courtesy because you have the blood of the people. Those with you do not. The Sullen Selkie!

Sliviu beckoned Deverick to come on. Deverick could see the river barges bobbing up and down in the River Selitain.

The boats, or barges, by which the Rhennee plied the waters in and around the Nyr Dyv are distinctive. Their draught was extremely shallow, less than a fathom (six feet or so), meaning the Rhennee barges can travel up rivers and tributaries completely impassable to other, larger, vessels.

The barges themselves vary in size, with more powerful clans having more impressive boats. An average sized barge might be fifteenth feet x forty feet, with small examples being ten feet x thirty feet, and the largest perhaps thirty feet x ninety feet in length. They had no cabins save that on the aft deck reserved for the Lord of the clan, but their hulls are planked over, affording a closed space for cargo. They have both sails and oars (the latter for use when the winds are either not favorable or non-existent), and they were equipped with clever arrangements of buckets and pulleys for emptying the bilge when heavy seas demanded it. They also kept a small boat in trail for quick journeys.

The ships were heavily armed as a rule, not only to deter pirates (river pirates are thick in some areas frequented by the Bargefolk) but also to fight off the fearsome sea monsters that were found in the Nyr Dyv. Crossbows, scorpions ( mounted on swivels), and oil are primary weapons against such creatures, as well as javelins and regular bows.

Dmitri's barge was most elaborate and the wood was intricately carved with the prow depicted a giant octopus with it's eight arms reaching out as if to grab someone or something. Sliviu bowed with a courtly flourish.

"Dmitri awaits you in the aft cabin. Just you two on the barge. We wait here."

Deverick gane a reassuring smile to his two companions, then went off with the grou of Rhennee men. The smells out here was a pot pouri of fish, spices that the Barge Folk cook with, and the usual smells of a less pleasant nature that went hand in hand with all towns.

When they seemed to have arrived at the Barge where this meeting was to take place, Deverick had to admit, it was an impressive Barge, worthy of a Lord of the Folk. He looked to the one named Sliviu, when he invited Dev to board.

" I be honored ta board yer Lords Barge as a guest of yer clan."

Deverick knew that unless something was really wrong here, he would depart the barge still in good health. It had been known to have someone given guest rights on a barge to be slain once they set foot on dry land again, but Dev hoped that would not be the case, since he was only armed with a Dagger. The Warrior stepped onto the deck of the Barge, and took a moment to get the sway of the craft. Deverick then slowly made his way toward the aft of the Barge and to the cabin.

The Sullen Selkie!

Deverick had been on a Rhennee barge before but not one so big or richly designed or equipped. As he walked across it's wide deck he could see the elaborate pulley system used to bilge excess water off the deck. There was a carved wooden door toward the aft of the craft which the big warrior knew was the cabin of the Rhennee Lord, Dmitri. He carefully moved down the barge and found the door open.

Inside was more spacious and luxurious than he would have imagined. There were the large pillows scattered about the wooden floor where the guests of the Lord would sit, dine, and drink with him. There was a large lamp made of gold which swung upon a golden chain from the ceiling that gave off limited light but enough to see the lord lying on the floor dressed in silk and leathers. A jeweled dagger protruded from the scarlet sash about his waist. He beckoned Dev to join him as he nodded to the cushion across from him.

Dev was then aware of the huge bed carved right from the bulk-head of the ship itself and a huge chest with a lock upon it. Dev's cushion was a mere arm's length away from Dmitri. Deverick sized up the Rhennee lord as he would any would be opponent. He was of average height, about five feet six inches tall, but powerfully built. Deverick over six feet must duck down least he bump his head and then it came to him. In this cabin Dmitri would have the advantage. He could move with ease and not worry about knocking into things or tripping over the pillows. Yet, Dmitri seemed as if he was for entertaining and not fighting this eve.

"Come! Sit! Or lounge whichever you choose. I poured your wine." he nodded to the goblet beside the pillow reserved for the big warrior.

"I thank you for coming. We shall speak but first you must relax and we talk no?"

Deverick entered the cabin of the barge, and he had to blink, for he was extremely surprised by the luxury held within. Dev had seen Inn rooms that this place made look like stalls in comparison.

A voice spoke to him,and it could be no other then the Rhennee Lord himself,Dmitri. Deverik  turned that way and a sudden pain exploded, as he struck his head on an overhead beam. Indeed, any conflict in this place, all the advantages where with the Lord. When he was invited to sit upon the pillow opposite Dmitri, Deverick nodded and with great care, settled on the pillow crosslegged.

"I be thankin ye, Lord Dmitri fer the invitation.I be honored,en all that,Sir. I be surprised someone as important as ye wants ta see the likes o me." Said in the tongue of the Rhennee.

Deverick took the goblet of wine, and with a gesture, took a sip of the vintage. " Good wine."

Dmitri smiled and nodded "Only the best for you. Almi is your Aunt no? She is a most powerful Vetha as you know. I have one of my own but... "

At this he leaned in conspiratorially and said "... sometimes I see your Aunt when I must see the future. Yes, she pays for my protection but it is only a few nobles a month. You see I respect her and so I must respect you the blood of her blood no?"

He sipped his wine and watched Deverick over the goblet's rim as if he was sizing up the big warrior.

"Your mother was Rhennee no? You must take after your father for you are nearly a giant. I have news for you Deverick. This news is most troubling to me. I wish only one favor in return. You not only get the information I am about to tell you but I will also let you know a little secret... some would call it your Rhennee inheritance. Would you like to hear more?"

The more Dmitri talked, the more Dev became interested. It was not every day that a Lord of the People had Dev sit down to wine and a chat. He had to admit, he found himself flattered by the attention. But that feeling came to a sudden end, when Dmitri said something about asking a favor in return for this information.

Dev took another sip of his wine, to stall, while he thought this others words, over.

" Ye have me attention,Sir,that be a fact. But I nay knew if I can do ye a favor,if I nay know what ye want o me. How bot this, ask me th favor,en I can tell ye if I can do it. If I can nay do it, ye nay hav ta tell me the rest."

Deverick hoped that was a reasonable response.

Dmitri pursed his lips as he swirled the wine in his goblet and he finally nodded, A smile spread slowly along his lips, sending his mustachios wiggling.

"Although you have your father's body, you hold the mind and wisdom of the Rhennee. Your mother and aunt would be proud no? Very well, i shall tell you the favor I need and then you may tell me yes or no. This is fair no? "

He sipped his wine and then set his goblet down and sighed.

"The Rhennee are very clannish no? They hold grudges as bad as the stout folk under the mountain, this is widely known. There is a troublesome man... a Rhennee who disrespects me and many lords. He needs to be stopped but if I should do this thing... those Rhennee who love him would hate me. Now this Rhennee is a bad man Deverick. He has sent men to your Aunt's place demanding golden orbs for his protection when I already do this no? He even wants more coin for the same job. I need to send him a message and by doing so this would serve your aunt as well no?"

He chuckled then "I know ah secret that will bring this man into the laws hands and then my hands will be clean no? You must bring my news to the law then. This is what I ask. Then I wil honor you with knowledge that you should know. This is fair no?"

With Dev's answer Dmitri drained his wine glass and then reached within his vest. When he pulled the object out he did so with a shaking hand. He then swallowed hard and held it out for the big warrior to see. It was a necklace or bracelet, formed of wire strung with beads, animal teeth, and feathers.

"This is a draba, a Rhennee charm deverick. Not even the Vethas can make these. Not one in ten thousand Rhennee women can make them. This... this was made by your mother and was to be given to you. Almi forbid giving you this for your mother married your father who was a suvesh. Because of this Almi thought it to be cursed but I think not. It was made by your mother for you. Deverick's eyes slowly closed as the warm sensation continue to flow over him. Then the big warrior started to sense emotions which he knew were not his own... emotions of love. Not romantic love but something he remembered as a young lad. It was the sweet nurturing love that could have been only from one person... his mother! Now he also felt a tinge of sadness slipping in... as if she knew that she could not be here at this very moment. Yet, somehow she was. Deverick saw her full beautiful face framed by dark culy hair. Crow's feet around her dark brown eyes and more lines about her mouth that bespoke of someone who smiled and laughed often.

Her lips formed a single word but not in Common but in Roppan! It was the word for... for leader! She then blew him a kiss as tears began to flow and another wave of sadness washed over him and she was gone...

"What! What did you see? What did you feel? Deverick! Did you... did you see her?" said the Dmitri in almost a hushed whisper.

The sensation of drifting away to another place washed over Deverick. He felt the presence of his youth, one taken from he and his brother far to soon. The Warrior knew it was his mother's shade,or call it what you would,he knew it to be her. He attempted to reach out to touch the woman that had bore him, but of course he touched nothing.

The word for leader escaped his mother's lips, and Dev had no idea what she meant, but he felt tears well in his eyes as she then slowly faded away. Deverick wiped his eyes with his sleeve.

" I saw.... I saw me mother, may the gods keep her safe. But how did ye knew that?"

 Deverick's eyes narrowed.

"In truth... I only suspected but did not know. I think your Aunt Almi suspected as well but did not wish you to know. You see the Vethas are rare... the ones who can make the Dubra are rarer still... but a man of Rhennee blood who shows signs of the art, they are the rarest still. Sometimes a mother may pass on a talent to another of their kin. Many do so to their daughters yet some to their sons."

Deverick came out of the cabin and across the barge in but a few strides. The knot of Rhennee upon the wharf looked and took a double take of the big warrior as he made the gang plank creak. As he reached them and the bottom the one who spoke earlier nodded as his eyes squinted for a better look.

"Good eve then Deverick." he said almost as an after thought.

Deverick strode through Shack Town, a slum outside the walls of the city itself, to reach the Selkie itself. Nothing really had changed in a day. The Sullen Selkie was located deep within Shack Town. Bums and drunken sailors along with the other dregs of society crept along the dirty trash filled streets looking for a hand out most kept to themselves but the few that looked toward Deverick stepped out of his way and starred. Dev could hear the voices of perhaps drunken sailors and longshoremen lifting their voices in old sea chanteys somewhere in the distance. he followed the sound to the old tavern itself.

Dev opened the door to the building and remembered the along flight of steps leading down. Twenty steps later led him to another door, heavy with iron bands, that barred his way. In the midst of the door, about eye height, was the panel, which after he knocked, slid open and a pair of black eyes stared out. "What do ya want? Oh! its you... ain't?"

Though only his eyes where visible, Dev could detect a quizzical look in them.

They settled into the room that they had slept in the night before. Deverick removed his armor and washed up in a basen of water before he turned in for the evening.

Blossom made comment on the necklace, and Dev was still not sure how he felt about having it. He knew there had to be a magic upon the thing, and he dare not tell Blossom that fact, knowing how she felt about such things.

" Aye, if I still be drawing breath and able, I will go with ye ta reclaim yer birth right, Blossom. But we av ta get clear o current matters afore we worry bout wha may be years off. Now we needs ta get some sleep, tomorrow mayhap, be bloody long."

Dev looked at her and thought,as he had many a time, since they had met, she was easy on the eye, and seemed to really like him. Normally, That would be more then enough for Deverick to offer to share his bed with her. But, she was no wench to have a tumble with for a night. He had shed blood and steel with the Shield Maiden, and that placed her in the comrade category. a Mixing battle and beds, usually ended badly for all concerned. He had seen it more then once in the Militia. Dev had a hard a fast rule never to cross that line.

The small but thick bundle that was Ovo and the longer more curvaceous form of Blossom. It gave him comfort that these two had been with him  since the beginning. Then his eyes grew heavy and another kind of darkness over came him.

He knew not how long he had slept but the warm hand over his mouth and the hush whisper in his ear woke him straight away!

Right, ye be a woman, but ye get me meaning. I respect ye as a Warrior,And I be a lying dog,if I nay said I find ye pleasing ta me eyes. But....''

Deverick really wished he had a Hogshead of ale about now. He was almost at a loss for words on this.

"We only knowed each other nay on a week,Lass. I know ye seem ta av feeling fer me,and I be right honored, but I....." Wishing for a barrel of ale, now. " I needs time fer such things. Some lads would be taken advantage of ye and this, but I respect ye to much ta do such a thing.May Tritherion curse me if I ever do ye harm, willingly."

He made a heavy sigh, and then got to his feet and walked to the door and looked out, then walked over and waved Ovo back into the room.

Deverick crawled into bed and tried to get to sleep. As much as he tried, sleep eluded him for a long time that night. Deverick kepy thinking about the card ready his aunt had done for him. Had he made the right decisions? He said a silent prayer to Tritherion, asking for guidance and wisdom to walk the right path.

Each time he closed his eyes Deverivk saw the card...

The third card held a picture of a beautiful woman with blue eyes and long blonde hair. In one hand she held a bloody dagger and in the other a bleeding heart..

Once he fell into a deeper sleep, the big warrior dreamt of a big blonde maiden who held not a dagger but broadsword but it was no less bloody for all that.

Finally Deverick was awoken by Ovo's rough hands.

"Come on ye big lug!" Ovo said, his smile taking the sting out of his words.

"Ren be up n' in a foul mood. He sits in the common room yonder." he hitched his thumb over his shoulder toward the door leading to the afore mentioned room.

As Deverick shook the sleep and cobwebs from his head he noticed Blossom's bunk as empty.

Outside, the common room of the Selkie was sparse. Only a few dockworkers who had stopped by for a quick bite to eat and/ or a quick drink to set the mood for their day. Dead center of the room sat the Master Merchant and Blossom. The former looking worse for wear. Pale complexion and bags below both eyes could be clearly seen. Blossom was sitting up with her armor on and her hair braided once more. Her winged helmet sat at arms length from her. When she saw Deverick and Ovo she smiled slightly and nodded.

"Ho! Deverick and Ovo! Come! Join us for we have much to speak on." said Ren. "Blossom said you delievered my letter and saw me besides. I would hear all about it."

"Oh, aye, I will show ye Blossum. It be a dice game with a brace o' dice made out o' knuckle bones. They av pips on em,and ye av...." And Deverick went on to explain the rules to throwing knuckle bones.

He took his coin purse and spilled out a few onto the table and "Just" happened to have two knuckle bones on  him.

" Who ever be playin, put yer coins in th center o' the table. Ye be playin Ren,Sir?"

Deverick bet twenty Orbs, then rolled the bones.

Deverick led his two companions, with the aid of Derider's warrant, through the gates and to the Sullen Selkie once more. As far as Dev could tell they were not followed. Once they were into the tavern proper, the party headed straight for the back room where Blossom still laid under her blankets. Ren rose as they came in, naked steel was across his lap and he gave the group a curt nod.

"She has rested peacefully since you've been gone. No more trouble either but the tapster's doorkeeper was injured as well when that thing broke in. I said I'd cover for his healing as well." the master merchant said as he laid eyes on Sulwyn.

"Can you heal both the girl and the keeper then? I will pay for both."

Sulwyn nodded "Aye! I can manage that I think. Yet, hold your coin. What I do I do for friendship and the good of Pelor. Nay for coin or greed. Now then... " he said moving to Blossom and kneeling beside the maiden.

"... that she sleeps soundly is a good sign. Now then... allow me a moment." Sulwyn said as he closed his eys and clasped the holy symbol about his neck.

He then lowered his head and prayed silently as he laid hands upon the Snow Barbarian. Soon her eyes flitted open and she gasped.

"My... sword! Bring me...my sword!" she croaked

When Deverick heard Blossom ask for her blade, he looked around for it. Once he had located the sword, Dev took it and handed it hilt first to Blossom. "The danger be past, lass. We slew the thing that would have taken ye. Now ye must rest."

Blossom nodded and gave Deverick a weak but yet seemingly fierce smile before she closed her pale blue eyes. The sword still holding her broadsword.

Sulwyn looked to Deverick and the others and smiled "I think she will be fine. Pelor blessed me and her. What will you do now? Might I suggest going to the Constable? She might be able to provide protection, answers, or both. There is a spell that could protect you from such beings... those not of Oreth but I can not cast it today if I heal both she and the other. Derider is not only a Constable but priestess as well. Her spells have more power than mine at any rate."

Ren pursed his lips in thought and rubbed his chin absently for a few breaths.

"Aye! I see no reason for her not to know. Could you do me a favor good priest? Have her meet us at the Wheel of Gold this very eve. I myself as well as these who follow me will be there. Derider could come as well. We would appreciate her counsel in fact."

He then turned to Deverick.

"If Blossom can travel, we should leave within the hour. As I said, I wish to stop by the Merchants and Traders' Union before meeting with the Mayor."

Sulwyn nodded "May I travel with your group. The streets are dangerous and I want to reach the temple with this news."

The priest then smiled at Dev "You may call upon me anytime friend Deverick. I hope I may do the same?"

Deverick listened to the others speak, and agreed with Ren’s decision. “Aye, ye can call on me in most things, Sulwyn. “

Deverick was expecting trouble on this journey to the Casino. Ren was coming out in the open since his rescue. Those that wanted him replaced might attempt such again, or attempt to silence him forever. Deverick had oiled and honed his weapons and armor the night before. So he was ready when they were.

The Sullen Selkie!

The next morning found Blossom up and already dressed for battle. Her studded leather armor and Valkyrie-like winged helm upon her golden locked head. She saluted Deverick with her father's sword.

"I'm ready Borcarsen. Vhate'er the day may bring." she said with a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.

Ovo also donned with geared for war, chuckled.

"Gud ya see ye full o' grit lass. Be nay so ready ta use yer father's sword. I'd like ah quiet trip fer once."

Ren walked in looking more like ah mercenary than a merchant prince himself.

"I thought a disguise might be in order. We'll pretend to be the priest's escort on the way to Pelor's temple. From there it is not far to The Wheel of Gold. We shall also be in the High Quarter where there will be more guards and aid if needed."

The morning found Deverick up before the dawn. He donned his oiled mail, and Kettle helmet. The Great Sword "Big brother" and the short sword, "Little sister" where in scabbards upon his person. A smile came to the face of the warrior, upon seeing Blossom.

"Good ta see ye up and about,Lass. The Gods be smiling upon this day."

When Ren spoke of his idea of having them "escort" the Priest, he nodded in approval.

"Right, let's be about it then. We be burning daylight." Said with a grin.
