The Wheel Of Gold!

When the Sergeant returned to announce Deverk, and his reaction to Dev having commandered his chair was priceless. Deverick smiled ever so sweetly to the Sergeant." Ye should learn ta control that temper,Sarge. Looks bad in fron o the Officers." Wide Grin.

When the Woman that he assumed was the Constable, asked he be shown in, Deverick assumed an immediate military bearing. If he had to go see one of the top military commanders of Greyhawk, he might as well make it a good showing.

Deverick did not wait for the Sergeant, but marched right past him into the office of the Constable. He would march up to where she was located, and come to a position of attention worthy of any parade ground. He would snap off a salute to the Constable.

"Corporal Deverick, late o the Militia River Patrol, reporting ta th Constable as requested."

The Wheel Of Gold!

It did not take long for the trio to make it through Shack Town. Before them stood ywo gates leading into Greyhawk proper. One, the closer, was the Cargo Gate. much busier which lead into the River Quarter and the buy street called the Strip. Uet Dev had chosen the smaller and less trafficked Marsh Gate. though it was a round about way some would say the former blacksmith was wise in his choice.

Because there was less traffic of course they could be seen but they could also observe others all the better. in fact, Dev saw a knot of Rhennee were following at a discreet distance. when the trio made the gate proper, Derider's writ saw them through without incident. Not so the Rhennee! The Sergeant-in-Arms stopped them one and all. Whether they were friends sent Dmitri or foes sent by his rivals it mattered not now.

Once throught the gate traffic became even more sparse. Dev saw a beggar shouting for alms. It did not escape the big warrior that the old man with a blinded eye peered at him hard before he began his shouts once more. There was no shady man from the shadows at the gate. However, a warrior type complete in dark cloak and mail came out of a side alley and took up behind them about a hundred paces behind.

"Borcarsen! Dat may be vun o' dose men da gnome spoke of. Vee should stop him n' find out vhat he vants." the maiden said, placing a hand on her broadsword.

Pvo shook his head "Nay! If we harm 'im that will only give that Negely ah excuse ta pick us up."

The trio made it through the gate and into the High Quarter proper. But it seemed thier travel did not go unremarked. It seemed to Deverick, he and his friends where more popular then a whore giving away free samples. When it seemed that they had acquired an escort of one in a dark cloak,Dev's companions had different opinions about how to handle the situation.

" Ye both be right, we av ta find out who they bloody well be, but we nay can do it in the ruddy open. Lets find a nice out o' the way place ta meet and talk to our friend that be following us."

Deverick looked for a nice dark out of the way alley or cul de sac to ambush the man in the dark cloak... Just for a chat, mind you.

Though the idea was a noble one, the High Quarter was much more open than any of the other quarters. Most likely this was by design. The buildings were larger and better made with grand lawns and landscapes between them. There was hardly a place to hide or duck behind. The area was also heavily patrolled and the though the trio were not stopped each Watch patrol eyes them with scrutiny.

Not far in the distance was the church of Pelor and far to the north the Citadel could be clearly be seen. Even the Wheel Of Gold was visible from the man road. There was a small grove of trees not far from the Citadel itself that may suffice. That is if the fellow was dumb enough to follow them in there.

Ovo said "The law be older than yer blade Deverick. I advise caution. We need ta deliver those missives n' the sooner the better. If we should attack this fellow n' be kilt or arrested fer fight'n then our mission will fail. Yer writ will nay protect us when we be disturb'n the peace."

Deverick looked to the Dwarf, and seemed about to give him an argument, but then sighed.

" Bugger it all. Ye av th right o' it, Ovo. I hate this walking round in th dark. We av people following us, for the gods only knows what purpose. I wants ta come ta grips with an enemy I can see and touch with me blade. C'mon then, lets get ta the Casino and get it done."

It was obvious that the large man was not happy at all, But the Dwarf's common sense won Dev over, at least this time.

The Wheel Of Gold!

It was not hard to find the Wheel of Gold as it was not far from the High Market. In fact, their tail dropped off into that bustling market place. As Deverick approached the door again the eye slat opened. Yet, this time the guard upon the other side did not even challenge the big warrior but flung open the door and ushered Deverick and his companions inside.

Once inside, Deverick, Ovo, and Blossom were directed to a side room comfortably arranged for guests to rest between gambling or just a less crowded area to talk and have a drink.

"Wait here if ya please? I shall fetch Master Hawkhand for ya. He said if ya showed back up I was ta get him immediately."

Ovo raised his brows "Well lad we've moved up in the world aye?"

Blossom looked about wide-eyed at the luxury of the place. All the gilded gold, silk, and gem stones. She plopped down on an overstuffed chair with a sigh.

"I feel like ah queen in dis place." she giggled.

Deverick was sure of one thing. They were trusted more than most as they were allowed their armor and arms where others were not.

When Deverick and his companions where allowed into the Casino with thier weapons, he was surprised by that, not that he would argue with them. When they where showed into a  fancy waiting room, Deverick gawked at the luxury of the place.

" I spose they trust us now, cause who we be working for. Aye, we are coming up in th world."

Deverick almost told Blossom she would look like a queen eve in a pig pen,but the words did not come. He still felt bad about the fact, he mid of hurt her feelings.

It was not long before Master Evran Hawkwood entered the room without any of his hulking guards. The middle aged half elf eyed the dwarf and maiden with some suspicion but then nodded toward Deverick.

"It is good you have survived the night. I assume you have brought another letter for me then? Yes! I have one for your employer as well. The Lord Mayor also sends his gratitude. When I told him about you being here... well he decided to call an emergency meeting of the Oligarchs. Which he did. Thanks to your intervention we captured the other Ren. He is too knowledgeable to be a simple actor or even a bespelled mage. If there was some way to tell for certain but mayhaps there is some such in this letter. Do you have anything else to offer the Mayor and the city of Greyhawk?"

Deverick took out Ren's letter and offered it to the Half-Elf. "This be fer the Lord Mayer from his nibs. His nibs be thinking this may be the work of a Doppelganger creature. He says they can take th shape of others."

When Deverick was asked if he had anything else to offer Greyhawk,Deverick bristled.

"Aye, I offered four years o' me life fer th city. I now offer me heart,me mind, and o' most import".... The Great Sword was suddenly drawn from his back scabbard to be rested point down on the ground. " I offer me sword ta Greyhawk. I be a loyal en proud citizen o' this er city.Be that enough....Sir?"

Master Hawkhand raised a brow at the mention of the monster's name.  He then pursed his lips before thinking. Upon hearing Deverick's pledge to the city, the casino manager merely nodded.

"That is a worthy piece of information which i shall passs along to the Lord Mayor at once. As for you swearing allegiance to the city, I shall pass that along as well. I will give you a bit of information that effects you personally. The Constable of the City itself spoke highly of you during the meeting. So much so that the pleding of his Lordship's nephew fell upon deaf ears. More so, The lord Mayor has ordered Negely to cease his investigation of you and your comrades."

Ervan paused for several heartbeats before continuing.

"The mayor may have a job of his own for you, once the current matter is settled once and for all. Have a drink on the house while I retrieve my letter." he said with a nod and then turned on his heels and left the room.

Deverick was very tempted to bring up the fact that the Half-Orc Priestess conveniently perished in the custody of Negely, but he decided not to tempt  that path of fate,at least not today. Being the Deputy Constable and blood kin of the Lord-Mayor AND the Guild Master of the Thieves, would make Negely someone to be reckoned with. Dev had no desire to tangle with someone with so much power. Deverick hoped that it was just the Deputy Constable doing his duty, and not part of whatever intrigue was going on with the Council, that had him looking so hard for the Warrior.

The mention of a potential job made Dev's ears perk up.

" I am sure me and me mates be always willing ta talk over any potential work,Master Hawkhand."

When the Half-Elf had departed the room, Dev spoke to his friends.

" I was tempted ta tell him bout Negely letting that Half-Orc Priestess gack off in his care. And wha about that hooded bugger at th gate yesterday, that tried ta av em take me inta custody. Odd,damn odd, if ye asks me,mates. But I nay said anything cause it just be me opinion, and the man be blood kin o' th Lord-Major. Just hope this be th end of it."

Ovo winked at Deverick "Ye got some such in that bald dome o' yers lad. That's fer certes. Aye! I agree. Negely can nay be trusted but he be from the same blood o' the mayor. It nay be likely 'is laird-ship will take our side o'er his least ways. If we can tie his arse up wi' the priestess or others o' this cloak n' dagger mess then he'd 'ave ta listen."

The dwarf chuckled at the idea of the offered job "How do ye like that! E'eryone from the king o' beggars ta the Laird Mayor 'imself wonts ta hire us. We be dam gud methinks."

"Aye, we needs ta stop at the temple o' Pelor, after we leave here, mates. I av ta drop somthing off fer the Constable anyways. We can tell er bout the black cloaks. Tal might know what be what,so we can scout him out, now th Watch nay be looking fer us.

His mouth was now full,so the talk ceased and the chewing commenced.

Ervan Hawkhand returned with a sealed parchment in hand. he nodded in satisfaction as he saw the three companions enjoying themselves. The manager cleared his throat.

"Please continue to enjoy yourself for as long as you like. Here is the letter for your employer. I have sent a bird to the Lord Mayor telling him of our discussion here. If I may... where may I reach you all or at least leave word. The lord mayor or even other Oligarchs may wish to talk with you as well. Think upon it and let me know. I shall return in a few moments. Until then eat and drink as much as you like. For you have earned it."

He laid the sealed parchment upon a table nearest Deverick. He then went back into the casino proper...

Deverick agreed, but they had to wait until the return of the half-elf. The Sullen Selkie would be their lair for the time being.

Deverick sat down and drank another ale for the road, he was about to take another drink, but then a thought hit him. He sat down the tankard and reached into the top of his right boot and removed the paper that the Rhennee lord had given him,to be handed over to the Watch. While Deverick was no scholar,he knew his letters, and attempted to read what was written on that paper.

When Deverick reads the message written by Dmitri it states:

To Whom It May Concern

It has come to my attention that certain Rhennee have been involved in activities which may have dire consequences for the good people of Greyhawk. One Rhennee in particular has recently come to our fair city and has brought nothing but evil with him. His name is Boyko Petris. He has bringing weapons and secreting them through verious gates but mainly the marsh gate. these weapons are many and are not meant for sale but for arming a goodly amount of bravos i think. I also have heard he has smuggled into the city at least four individuals which are rumored to be agents of the Evil Horned Society. Please know that most Rhennee stand for the city. Boyko can usually be found at the River Rat Tavern in the River Quarter. He is usually surrounded by his men so take care.

Deverick's lips formed the words as he read what was on the note. When he had finished, he lowered the paper and swore. " Bloody Hells." He rolled the note and shoved it back into his boot. Now Dev had another thing to worry about, like he had none already. Was there truth on that paper,or was it a pack of lies? He had agreed to deliver this thing to the Watch in exchange for something that had been his mothers. Deverick cursed himself for a thrice damned fool. He never thought fast on his feet. Oh, sure, in a fight or setting up a quick ambush, he was fine, but quick witted was not his thing. If given time to mull something over, he could be clever, but not on the spot things.

"Right, when we leave er, I needs ta head fer th Temple o' Pelor,I needs ta drop off a couple o' things fer the Constable. ye can go with me, or head fer the Merc Guild ta see whats what. Do me a favor en pick up me gear. It jus be a back pack, but it be heavy. We can meet up  at th Green Dragon in a few hours. What say ye?"
