Ovo shook his head "That be madness lad! How can one be the other? I be known'n that magic be powerful n' can do strange deeds but this? And be this Ren or some such that pretends ta be Ren. If that be so then why?"

Ovo stared at the pavilion with some suspicion...

Dev was not sure what to do,as concerned the Hobbit and woman. But he did know, they had to deliver the missive for the Mayor.

"Madness Ovo? Mayhap, but I know wha I knows. We ad them that had magic ta support us in th Militia, from time ta time. They could do some bloody impressive things, I am er ta tell ye."

The Warrior thought for a few moments, then came to a decision.

" Right, mayhap we should watch th place. What say th two of ye watch th place, en I drop off the missive, then come back."

Ovo nodded "That be a right gud plan lad. Blossom n' me will keep our eyes out fer any mischief. Half elf or hobbit, we'll spot 'em and will get sum information as well. Go on lad, we;ll nay let ye down."

Blossom gave Dev a curt nod!

Dev then turned on his heels and headed for the gaming house owned by the mayor and Ren o' the Star frequented, that and maybe his shade...

The Wheel of Gold was a legitimate gambling establishment. Yet, a casino will always make money. The odds are always stacked in favor of the house. The victims of the above mentioned extortion will rest easier knowing that their misery is only a small part of Greyhawk's revenue. Lord Mayor Nerof Gasgal was said to be a thief in good standing within the guild so why not invent a new way... a legal way to rob the good folk of Greyhawk.

As he reached the steps of the establishment someone cleared their throat behind him.

The course of action having been decided upon, Deverick bid his comrades fare well, until latter. He made his way to the Wheel of Gold to deliver the missive for the Mayor. Once that was done, he intended to return his two comrades, and with any hope some down time.

Just as Deverick reached the base of the Casino's steps, heard heard someone clear his throat. The Warrior turned to look in that direction.

The Wheel Of Gold!

A man who stood 5'9" tall and with a medium build, Dev guessed he weighed about 160lbs. His head held close-shaved brown hair and his keen blue eyes studied Deverick for some heartbeats before hr gave the big warrior a nod of greeting.

"Well met... Deverick the Tall mayhaps? I am Sulwyn, a priest of Pelor and a friend of a friend." said the man with a slight smile.

He was indeed dressed like a priest and was wearing robes that a follower of Palor should be wearing. Yet, upon his belt hung a footman's mace. Again, blades were forbidden to those who served the Lady of Light.

"I do not mean to disturb you but I have grave news... tidings you should heed. Will you listen then?"

Deverick took the measure of the self described Priest of Pelor. The Warrior did take note of the very functional looking mace at the man's waist.

" Aye, I be Deverick, and a  follower of Trithereon. Seeing me god and yer god be on good terms, I av no issue with speaking with ye, good Priest. But how be it,ye knew me name?"

The smile slowly spread upon the priest's lips.

"She said you would be curious. That's not a bad thing considering. I am glad you chose wisely. Tessorielle is my friend. She is most concerned for your well being. I... I do not know you Deverick nor you me. Yet, there is one of my order and an Oligarch no less, that knows of you as well. It seemed Tess found out about this and asked me to look into it. If this person was interested in you, I was to seek you out. Tess said you would be headed here... "

At this he pointed to the casino.

"... the Wheel of Gold. Now then, have you heard of Derider Fanshen?"

Dev knew her to be the Constable of the Watch and knew she was well known and liked among the folk of the Old City. Even some from the Slum Quarter itself. She gave alms when she could and even healed those in need when she could. She was known to be fair when it came to dealing with folks, even suspects of crimes.

Sulwyn again nodded with his smile in place.

"Derider wants to ask you some questions. What they are I do not know. Yet, I confirmed this with the Constable herself. You see I just came from the Citadel and her office. She asked me how I knew you and I said I didn't but could mayhaps find you.  Derider has already given your description to the various Watch patrols. I kept this destination to myself... I would not lie to the Constable you see but she never asked me if I knew where you were or where you were going to be."

The priest gave a slight shrug to his shoulders.

"It might be well you came with me to meet her. Better you come in voluntarily rather than being picked up by a patrol I would think. Do you indeed have business here... at The Wheel?"

Deverick took a long look at the Priest, before he spoke.

" I heard from th Gnome, this er Constable be lookin fer me. Ye confirmed this fact fer me, and I be thankin ye fer that. I be a right proud citizen o Greyhawk, that has done nay against her laws. So, if the Watch wants ta speak with me, that be fine, but I av a few things ta do afore hand. And me business in the Wheel be just that, me business."

" So, I be thankin ye fer your time, but I av a matter ta tend too. Be well, good priest."

Deverick would nod to him, then walked on up the steps.

Sulwyn held up a warding hand but his smile remained.

"Your business is indeed your own friend. I will nay ask you about it again. Yet, if you are willing to meet with Derider upon concluding your business, mayhaps you will do me the honor of escorting you to the Citadel. That is where you will find the Constable. Traveling with me has its advantages as well. While a patrol may ask to tag along, I could persuade them that I'm in charge... thus keeping them and their questions at bay so to speak. Take your time, I do not mind waiting I assure you. What say you?"

He then took another hard look at this Priest of Pelor.

"If ye speaks th truth, then ye be more then a simple Priest,if ye can come en go from th Great Citadel, en av chats with the likes o th Constable. Lemme deal with this we can get me comrades, then all take a stroll ta th Citadel."

Deverick then departed into the Casino, having become tired of converse.

Sulwyn's smile grew into a full out grin.

"No! I am a simple priest... who just simply knows a few of the right people in the right places. Our temple is most concerned with the welfare of the City of Gtryhaek and it's good folk. So we aid one of our own, the Constable, if and when we may. Tess said you were a descent sort... stubborn mind... "

Again he held up a warding hand.

"... tis the gnome's words and nay mine friend Deverick. If I may help you and the City at once, why that is a double boon for which I am happy to perform. I'll await you out here then."

Deverick showed the ring to the Door Wardens at the entrance to the Casino, and hoped they let him inside, because he was dressed for the battlefield, not polite society.

The Wheel Of Gold!

The Wheel of Gold Gambling House was a fine building crafted with the finest stone and mayhaps by the finest dwarven masons it would seem. Dev notice their handiwork straight away. The five broad steps led to the stout double doors of dark mahogany mayhaps all the way from the Amedio Jungle far far to the south. There was a small grate, about man-height, that would slide aside so those on duty upon the other side could see who wanted in before opening the door to allow one to come in. So Dev pounded on the door, the grate slid aside. Two dark eyes peered into Dev's own.

"Hullo! State yer business then! OH! Be show'n me an orb for admittance while yer at it!"

Not far behind him Dev heard the priest call out "Need to barrow a coin friend?"

When the door Warden demanded a coin, he frowned, but reached for his purse for a bloody Gold piece. He was in the High Quarter, home of the high and mightys, what did he expect. The golden Orb, stamped with the city seal of Greyhawk on one side, and the present Lord Mayor on the other, was handed over to the Warden.

To the Priest. " Nay, good Priest, I pays me own way."

The great dark doors swung inward and Dev was met by two muscular fighters which judged to be of the Master Class*. The one that spoke through the grate held up a beefy hand. The big warrior had now met his match and there were two of them. Though each wore only leather armor and both carried truncheons. Deverick was in a marbled foyer on a landing. Steps led upward to the casino proper. From his vantage point Devrick could not make out the interior.

"First things first Goodman. You must pay a single orb for the day or you may pay ten for ah year's membership. Secondly, ya got to shed that armor and weapons. There not allowed inside. Ya can keep yer bodykin there. This is a first rate establishment. There be no fighting, stealing, or cheating at the tables. If ya agree ta all that, ya can enter. We'll see to your stuff. The Lord Mayor have me hide if anything happen to it so its safe enough wi' us."

*I let players in my campaigns judge the retaliative experience of the probable foes of the same class. So Dev could judge these two being of the Master Class

1-3 Apprentices
4-6 Journeymen
7-9(+) Master Class

The Warrior patiently listened to the two door wardens tell him the rules of the place. When they where done, Deverick showed them the ring Ren had given him.

" I nay be here ta gamble, Lads. I be here ta deliver a message fer the Mayor."

Deverick would unbuckle his weapons belt and hand over his blades to one of the Wardens. He would ask one of them to assist him out of the mail hauberk, or do his best if they refused.

The two guards looked at each other with big eyes. The one who had spoken first said to the second.

"Go get Master Hawkwood Gulf. I'll stay here wi' our guest and help him get out o' his mail. Run on now n' be quick about."

The second guard nodded and left as quick as a big man could. Once he was gone, the other assisted Dev with his armor. He cleared his throat.

"That be from Master Ren o' the Star right? I know that symbol well enough. He's sent messages here afore now ya see. Yet, he was just here himself this very morn. You now bring this missive... something nay rings true friend. Master Hawkwood will speak with you. If ya be truly from Ren ya can trust him. My advice... start no trouble n' there'll be no trouble. In reply to The Oligarch (msg # 33):

Deverick blinked, when he heard Ren had just been there that morning. What was Ren up to,and what game was he playing at. But then Ren's words about replacing Ologarghs came unbidden to Devs mind. His head spun with the thoughts of what might be going on,or what was going on. He suddenly wished there where some river pirates to fight, instead of all this intrigue.

" Look, er,mate, I jus be an errand boy,nay more, nay less. jus want ta deliver this er scroll tube ta is nibs, and I be on me way. I  be not a bloody fool, ta start a ruddy brawl in th Mayor's Casino. Ye can laugh, if ye wish, but I gots more respect fer th Mayor then that."

The large Warrior leaned against the wall and waited.

The guard just nodded "That's ah good way to keep your head on your shoulders. Yours and mine. Master Hawkwood will be about in just a moe."

He then leaned against the opposite wall.

It was not long that the other guard returned and Master Hawkwood was in tow.

Evran Hawkwood was an middle age man, though how old it was hard for Dev to say. Mainly because of his half elf heritage some would say. He was a handsome man though very thin. He moved with a certain grace. His brown hair was pulled back in a tail and his piercing green eyes studied Dev with some scrutiny. The host was dressed in a white linen shirt, black silk breeches and vest to match that seemed quite conservative to the big warrior. A finely crafted dagger with a ruby upon the pommel on a plain leather belt. Other than this there was no other weapons. He gave Deverick a curt nod.

"Gulf said to had something for me? From Master o' Star? May I see it please?"

Deverick took the measure of the one that approach, then asked for the meaasage. He was a half elf, or so thought the Warrior. But he did not hand over the scroll tube at once.

" Be ye Evran Hawkwook? If ye be him, then, aye, the missive be fer ye."

Once the figure claimed to be the one told to Dev by Ren, only then, would the Warrior hand over the scroll tube.
