Instead of being irritated, the half elf smiled and inclined his head.

"I like someone who sticks to the letter of his instructions. Yes! I am he, Ervan Hawkwood. I assist the Lord Mayor in running this establishment. I know Master o' Star for he frequents this place with... mixed results. Now would you do me the honor of speaking with me in private, in my office."

When invited back to the others office for a friendly chat, Deverick slowly shook his head.

"With nay insulted ta ye,Sir, Thank ye, but nay thank ye. I was told ta deliver that there scroll ta ye fer the Mayor, by way o ye. I was told then ta leave en come back on th morrow ta get th answer. Beyond that, I know nuttin bout that goes on er. Just an errand boy, that be me. "

Deverick made to reclaimed his armor.

" With me purpose er done, I be wishin ye all, th good o th day. Me weapons,if ye please."

The half elf's smile slowly faded "Very well... good day to you. Gentlemen, help him with his armor and send him on his way."

He then turned on his heels and went into the casino with the parchment.

Gulf and the other guard assisted Dev with his armor. They then handed him his weapons just the way he left them. The one who appeared to be the leader looked at Deverick with something akin to respect in his eyes.

"Well you have guts at least. Best ya be on your way then."

Sulwyn, true to his word was waiting outside the door. He nodded to Deverick and smiled.

"Well that didn't take long. You ready to see the Constable?" he said as he nodded toward the Citadel.

Deverick quickly inspected his blades, then slowly nodded, He accepted the  assistance from one of the Wardens. When he was ready to depart, he replied to the Warden's comment about Dev not being a coward.

" When I was in th Militia, me Sergeant told me I be to thick witted ta be afraid. He may o ad a point there. Be well Lads."

Deverick walked out of the Casino, and felt a relief of getting out of that place. But that relief was fleeting,as the Priest was still there. He replied when Sulwyn asked if he was ready to Meet with the Constable.

"Be I ready ta meet one o th most powerful high en mighties in th city? Bloody hells, nay, be me answer. I be  no one of import,I don't even know ow she knows me name. But I said I be goin,so lets get me companions, and get this over with."

Deverick had been talking as he had been walking past the Cleric. He never broke stride, and his stride was a long one. And the Warrior was in no mood to slow down so the Priest could keep up with him. His destination was where he had left Ovo and Blossom.

Sulwyn's smile never left his handsome face.

"Very well my friend. Yet, you may be more important than you think yourself."

Yet he said little more as he must hurry to not only catch Deverick but keep his pace also. The warrior had to feel some satisfaction to hear the priest huff and puff a bit as they headed to the High Market and those gathered there...

Once dev made the outer stalls of the market proper, he had no trouble spying Ovo and Blossom. They hardly blended in with the crowd. The dwarf saw him as well and shook his head.

"I hope yer time twas better spent! We've nay seen ah half elf nor halfling come or go since ye left. Two or three patrons mayhaps but nay Ren nor one who looked like the wee assistant. I feel ill used I do!"

His hard eyes landed on Sulwyn. "Who in the nine hells be he? N' wot is he do'n here?"

Deverick felt better, when he spotted his two Companions. He did his best to answer his comrades questions.

" This er be Sulwyn,a Priest of Pelor. it seems he as confirmed that the Constable be wantin a chat with me. So, I told em tha I av nuttin ta fear from speaking with er,so we be goin ta the Citadel fer a chat. I completed our business in th Casino."

Deverick looked to the Priest then to Ovo. When next he Dev spoke, it was in Ovo's native tongue. Dangmir.

" This bloke, he claims ta be a friend o Tess,en she waged her tongue to em. I dunno how much she told em, but I av ta go see the Constable. I wants ye en Blossom ta go with me to the gates, jus in case he ain't wha e claims ta be. The two of you can go on yer way, once there, if all goes well, we meet at me aunties tonight."

Deverick returned to the Common tongue. " If ye two would, go with us as far as the Citadel gates, then we meet back where I hit that bastard earlier, this evenin."

"Aye lad! Lead on then. we'll be right behind ye... wont we Blossom?"

Ovo then smiled at the priest "Well met! Deverick be like ah brother ta me. Ye be tak'n him down ta see sum Constable eh?"

Sulwyn smiled and nodded.

"Gud! Ye be in charge o' see'n 'im out again?"

The priest nodded once more and the smile remained.

"Gud! Then we'd best be off! Day-light be fad'n n' I need ta wet me dry throat. Lead on! Know that we nay forget ah face?"

Blossom scowl retreated slightly when Dev said Sulwyn was a priest and nay a mage. Though she arched a brow when Dev spoke Dwarfish. The big warrior knew the maiden had not learned the tongie of the stout folk.

"Vel-cum Sulvin! Vot the dwarf said iz true. Borcarsen be ah brother of blood. Vee are sell-swords... in gud standing. Vee vant no trouble yah? But vee naot shy ah-way from it either yah?"

She then looked to Dev with a slight pout "I vont ta go vith ya ta she this Jarl of da Vatch. Ya be better kum-pany dan dis dwarf. Vie I can not cum?"

Sulwyn shrugged "That's what the Constable wanted. I know not why. Yet, I know her to be a fair and honest person. Dev can back this up. No one cares for the city or it's folk than Derider Fanshen. Tell you what... I can't promise that she will allow you entry but I can ask. I swear by Pelor I have no ill will or ill intentions towards Deverick. In fact, the opposite is true. He seems an honest and good man to me. I will bring him out or stay with him wherever he goes. This I also swear!"

When Blossom seemed upset that Dev had spoke Dangmar to ovo,and then seemed to think she was not welcome. the Warrior wanted to do a face palm. He leaned  leaned over to whisper into Blossom's ear.

" I spoke in Ovo's native tongue, cause I nay wanted th Priest ta understand me. He may not be wha he claims. Ovo will fill ye in on th rest, after we get ta th Citadel. Trust me,Lass. Keep alert"

Deverick then looked to the Priest Sulwyn. " Right! Let's be about it then."

With those words said, Deverick set off towards the Citidel, his pace much shorter this time, since Ovo was with him.

The Wheel Of Gold!

The party moved forward and northward at a pace that allowed Ovo to keep up as best he could. Dev and Sulwyn took the fore and Ovo and Blossom brought up the rear. As they left the High Market with it's many vendors and their well dressed clientele, the Great Citadel could clearly be seen looming before them. Dev, once a member of Greyhawk's mighty militia, it's marines in fact, could both marvel and respect the great fortress. He remembered even as a lad  in the Old City seeing it off in the distance. The Old City and the Citadel were indeed built around the same time and had weathered the many storms that the city itself had experienced. Though the big warrior had never seen it this close before. It's great granite walls and towers rose to the heights of the sky itself!

It was said that not only the City's Watch was housed there, that and the offices of it's officers, but also the jail cells for the hardest and most violent prisoners were held inside the walls, along with the city's mint, and the city 's armory. The group plodded onward and as they did Dev could see the city did a good job keeping the land about the Citadel free of trees and bushes, better to target your enemies  with arrows and bolts from those high walls. The grass was cut low and well manicured and the ground was only broken by one of the many ponds scattered about. His military training told him it would not take long to connect these ponds into a formidable moat in case of an attack.

Now the mercenary could see various patrols that were leaving the huge open gates. These would be traveling about the city to the various Watch Houses scattered about the city. Once there they would relieve their brothers now on duty.

Sulwyn nodded toward the the oncoming men "If they stop us that's okay. We will tell them we on our way to see the Constable and they are welcome to escort us. Better that than argue. Once we reach the gates I can get us inside the Redoubt."

The Wheel Of Gold!

The journey to the great Citadel of Greyhawk, was not as long as Dev might of wished. He felt a growing sense of dread, as the towers and walls of Granite drew more near, Dev kept recalling the words of Ren, about those in power not being what they seemed. Had the plot fully developed, or had they stumbled upon it, in it's infancy. The Gods only knew the answers to those questions.

As they drew near the gates, Deverick came to a halt. " Right, Blossom,Ovo, thank ye fer walking with me this far. Ye two can go yer own way now, we can catch up tanight."

It looked like Blossom would have bulked at the idea but Ovo touched her hand with a gentleness that bellied his usual gruff demeanor.

"Come! Come now lass. We could nay do fer him if we go inside that place. We kin do more for him out 'ere. Go on lad... tell... tell her. 'E'll be awright."

His hard eyes shifted toward the priest. What Dev saw there told a different story if the big warrior came to harm.

From somewhere ahead of the group a voice shouted forth "Ho! You all headed to the Citadel? You might be welcome if ya be Deverick from the Old City?"

The man who spoke was a Jr-Sergeant of the city watch by his uniform. There were five men-at-arms with similar uniforms but without his rank in tow. Some were whispering among themselves and nodding toward the big warrior.

Sulwyn was about to speak but the smiling Jr-Sergeant held up a halting hand.

"Let him speak priest if you may. 'Sides he be in no trouble least he causes it. The Constable only wishes ah word with him. Better the Citadel than the Old City of his birth I hear."

Dev girded himself, and answered the Watch Sergeant. " Aye, I be Deverick o th Old city. I ear th Constable wants ta waste er time, and talk ta me. Well, er I be. Lead me ta her,Lads."

The Wheel Of Gold!

The Jr-Sergeant nearly beamed "Well that was easy enough. Then let's be off. The Constable be waiting!"

Sulwyn sidled up along side Deverick "It wont be long now. You'll like Derider! Everyone does."

The way went faster as Dev made great strides and the rest did well to keep up. The walls grew higher before the big warrior it seemed and the great gates were thrown open. Those sturdy gates seemed so stout as to turn a stone giant and there appeared to be a portcullis besides. The road sloped upward on what appeared to be a great ramp and Dev could see Archers and catapults upon the walls above them. For The Citadel was built upon a great knoll and this made it seemed even taller because it was. The stone was so dark... dark gray, almost black and the gate seemed more like a giant maw of a great beast than a welcoming and secure place. The gate was guarded by two elite patrols who waved them through.

Once through the great gate, who's weight of the great stones seemed to feel like the big warrior was not above but below ground. Once through, another great stone building was standing right before them. It was a great many storied block house. The Jr-Sergeant nodded in it's direction.

"That's The Redoubt! The Constable's office is within. Come she's waiting."

They marched toward one of the two sets of double doors. The one on the left in fact. Once inside the Redoubt itself, Dev was lead through the labyrinthine halls of the Citadel and up several flight of stairs. Dev was getting turned around already, as groups of Watchmen were moving all about and not a few nodded to their guide the Jr-Sergeant. Finally, they came to an iron-bounded door at the top of another flight of stairs. Upon the landing two guards came to attention. Once the Jr-Sergeant and priest explained who they were and who Dev was, they opened the doors into an entry chamber with two chairs and a great desk, behind which was an older officer... a Sergeant-at-Arms by his insignia.

"State yer business. The Constable has ah busy schedule. What's yer name lad n' are ya expected?"

The Wheel Of Gold!

The short journey to the interior of the redoubt was filled with tension. Well, that is how Deverick felt about the matter. He had a feeling this had to do with the Evil Cleric he had turned over to the guards. Maybe he should have slain the half-orc, but that went against Dev's grain. When one surrendered to you, that prisoner was your responsibility until you where relieved of that prisoner. He silently cursed the Drill Master, that had taught him that years ago. Bloody rules, they got in the way of things, sometimes.

The Petite-Sergeant had a talent for under statement, when he pointed out the Redoubt. Dev wanted to say something like" No bloody jesting" to the man,but he thought better of it. If the builders of this place wanted to intimidate, they succeeded, and then some. They trooped on into the thing, and where swallowed whole. In the course of time, Deverick, and his new found "friends" arrived at the officer of the Constable of the city of Greyhawk. Deverick would rather be in an Orc Den, right about then. The Sergeant demanded to know his name and business.

" Ye seem ta be th only one that don't know me name round here. I be Deverick, Son o Borcar o Old City. Her nibs wants ta talk ta me, or so I been told more then once."

The Sergeant's brow furrowed and his two busy brows came together like caterpillars at war! The older man's countenance became the picture of displeasure.

"Is that so? Mayhaps ya better have ah seat while I let... how did ya put it? Oh! Aye! Her nibs right lad? Well set yer arse down in one o' those seats while I let Her Nibs know ya be here. Just ah word o' caution ta ya lad... her nibs be one o' the nicest and bravest heroes o' this city. She would nay be offended by wot ya called her but if ya say that title in her presence well then me n' ye will have more than polite conversation. Take me meaning Deverick, Son of Borcar?"

The older man stood up slowly still exhibiting the muscle of a warrior but obviously he had been wounded in some conflict. He was missing the hand of his left arm and he walked with the stiff-legged gait of a man who might have lost his leg.

He turned slowly and approached the door separating The Constable's office and entry chamber. Sulwyn leaned in.

"Might can tell but the members of the Watch are nigh fanatical in their devotion to Derider Fanshen."

The Warrior listened to the Door Warden for the Constable, and was tempted to make the offer of taking the man up on his challenge. But on second thought, he decided to hold his peace and just wait.

Sulwyn made mention of the fierce loyalty of th Watch to Dev. He slowly nodded.

"Aye, I can see that,Sulwyn. I be surprised that they didn't take me weapons. Mayhaps, I nay in trouble after all."

A sudden smile came to the big man's face, as he sat down in the chair the recently departed Sergeant had vacated. " He said take a seat." Grin.

Whatever else he was about to say was cut off by a firm but high and melodious voice from the other room.

"Now, now Olaf! He's our guest. Please show him in."

"Show 'im in me hairy arse!" he said under his breath. Then a bit louder and with much less venom.

"Of course M'lord Constable! It be me pleasure aye!" he said with a forced smile.
