Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

It was a dark and stormy night in Silver Hill. Rain was welcome in the small village on the banks of the Rio Grande. Rain kept the lurking evils on the far side of the river at bay. Rain sometimes kept curious pilots from Lone Star away also. Rain was good, and thunder was better.

With the storm came other things. Travelers passing through the Pecos Empire arrived one at a time during the night or in small groups. They rented rooms at the only hotel. They came from different directions. They paid in different ways: black market credits, old coins, trade goods, or called-in favors. It wasn't unusual for the small inn to fill during the night.

It also wasn't unusual for large bands of Pecos Bandits to arrive during the night. Every morning, the residents would open their windows and look to see who was in town. Sometimes, a tribe of Monster Riders would have pitched tepees in the street. Other times, a mercenary army will have docked their barges at the river bank. Once, Chief Broad Tooth had his warlocks construct an entire fort at the edge of the town during a night, and they tore it down the next time.

On this morning, the storm broke and the towns people opened their windows as they always did. They saw a huge tent, nearly as large as the town itself, looming just passed the buildings. The tent blocked out the dawn sun it was so tall, like the big top circus tent of old legend. This tent, however, was green. The residents immediately knew that the Green Lady had returned.

This lady, the most mysterious of all the warlords of the Pecos Bandits, answered to no name. She had wandering into the Pecos territory from the Vampire Kingdoms one day. She was known as a powerful enchantress and rumored to be more. She always wore green for no clear reason. She rescued many fae and recruited them into her own private army.

Spriggans and Toad Stools and Night Elves and Sprites moved through the streets. They flew and walked this way and that, performing many chores for their queen. One fairy, a Night Elf with a surprisingly loud voice, fluttered in the crossroad. She shouted, "LISTEN ONE AND ALL. THE LADY IN GREEN HAD DECREED THAT EXPLORERS WILL HIRED FOR A SPECIAL TASK. SHE SEEKS HUMANS AND THOSE WHO CAN PASS FOR HUMAN AT A DISTANCE. THE NEED IS URGENT AND BENEFITS ALL GOOD CREATURES, BUT THE LADY PAYS HANDSOMELY ALSO. MEN-AT-ARMS SHALL APPLY AT THE LADY'S TENT." This message was repeated in Faerie Speak, Spanish, Elven-Dragonese, and even a broken version of Spanish.

At this point, all of the PCs are located in separate rooms at the inn. They have awoken due to the noise outside. The exception is Mister Samuel Lund who has resided in Silver Hill for a few weeks. He has been working at the town's mechanic while he has completed repairs and modifications on his own robot vehicle. Sam sleeps in his own rented space, an aging building which used to be a fire station at some point in the past. He is also awake now.

See the Main Map for the location of the Pecos Empire. See Maps #0 and #1 for views of the town. Robot horses are tied up outside of the inn. Part of the inn's service is providing a child watch the horses during the night.

Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

Samuel gets up, rubs his eyes and then stretches as he gets out of bed. He thinks, 'Well isn't that convenient. I just got done with that last bit of additional armor on Rover. Now I can go make some money.'

He does his morning routine, but actually shaves this morning. He fails to find some clean overalls, so he uses the cleanest set he can find. He then takes Rover out for a spin to the Green Tent. Upon exiting he sets the alarm and locks the air locks. He finds a creature to ask for directions and gets them. It takes him a bit as he is detracted by all of the interesting creatures, but he eventually finds his way to where ever the hiring is being done.

Polkitain watched the lightning and enjoyed the storm. The thunder rumbling and the bright flashes and feel of rain. Eventually he fell asleep only to be woken by. Yes it had to be. Fey folk.  He shook off the mud of the night.

"Fey Folk." He smiled unfurled his wings and fluttered in the air like them.

"Hmmm oh ok Sir Arulas. Yeah I do want to see what it is all about. Fey Folk get along with my breed of dragon." He fluttered along his companions.

Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

Nyx sat on the sill of the open window of the room he shared with his companions, leaning against the frame with one leg propped up and the other dangling outside. Cradled in one hand he held a thin cigarette, the faint scent of clover wafting from it as he listened to the Night Elf's proclamation. His face remained impassive, but he raised his hand to take another drag. Inhale, hold, exhale. He never slept well in a storm, but revelled in the aftermath, lingering to enjoy the charge in the air - like cordite after a gunfight - and the sense of peace that descended. He had frowned at the fae's interruption of his meditation, but listened nonetheless and was intrigued at the opportunity it presented -  smiling as the cyber-knight quipped about his jog

Atop his other hand rested a silver dollar, or something a less-successful 'slinger had claimed to be one. His fingers moved in a subtle rhythm, the dollar dancing across the back of his hand, pausing for a moment as he drawled his intention, "I'm too pretty to pass as a human, but it may prove entertaining enough to try. Let's seek out this 'Green Lady' and see what mischief she intends"

Doc staggered up to stand next to his brother, "It's entirely too early to be this loud." his hair a mess, his face(for an elf) looked tired and there was a distinct aroma of whiskey about him. Still, he was as keen hungover as he was sober. He put his cowboy hat on and grinned, "Can I bum a smoke bro?" he asked, as he hadn't grabbed his cigars in the rush to see what was going on, he looked to Sir Arulas, "If you want, I can teach you to use a gun so you don't have to jog."

Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

Ethan wakes up as the near perfect silence of the morning  is broken by the loud, repeated announcements coming from outside his room. He lies in bed for a moment, needing a few seconds to remember where he is. "It still feels like a bad dream," he thinks to himself as he blinks his eyes several times. With each blink he hopes in vain that his eyes will open upon his real room back home but he knows he will never see home again.

"Well that's enough wallowing in sadness Ethan," he tells himself. "Time to get up and face the day." He gets out of his bed and shaves, then gets dressed in his favorite fatigues. He supposed he should try harder to wear the clothes of the locals but he wanted the reminder of home today.

He finished his preparations to include strapping on his body armor and grabbing his weapons before exiting his room. “No doubt Sam is already heading for that tent,” he thought as he walked down the stairs of the little inn. He exited the inn and found he was correct; he spotted Sam in the distance, walking toward the tent. He also saw the tri of Elves walking in the same direction as a group.

“Elves”, he thought as he picked up his pace to catch up to Sam. “Who would have thought they were real? Then again myths and legends are often based on facts. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that is the case with Elves.”

A short time later he catches up to Sam and greets him. “Good morning,” he said to the Operator. “I take it you think this might be a good job.”

Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

A small and stocky fae stands at the entrance, taking names and inviting people in one at a time. Leprechaun? At least he is cordial.

Not everyone is here to apply for the job. A couple of villagers who also work as part time merchants are in line with wares that they hope to sell. A strange plant-like alien (a Cactus Person from New West) is first in line with some sort of information to relay to whomever is inside. All are interrupted by a massive Grackletooth who stomps out of the tent. The large d-bee curses in a language which is understood to none by itself.

We will assume that Polkitain is still in the form of a stallion and trotting alongside Sir Arulas. Surprisingly, the horse is permitted inside along the elf without any question.

Within minutes, the record-keeping fae has everyone in line and permitted inside. The inside of the tent is divided into a maze of different spaces which are separated by small curtains. Some of these spaces are filled with fae using computer terminals and other technology. Other spaces are simply packed with supply crates and drums.

These five characters who are humans or "close enough" (and one horse) are lead to large table where warm teas and cakes are laid out. They are told that they may help themselves if they are hungry. The stocky fellow tells them, "The lady will be here momentarily to interview you all. She would prefer that she answer any of your questions herself."

Nyx, I need you to make a Saving Throw for me. Some of the items on this table are faerie food (from the Palladium Fantasy rulebook), and that includes the coffee. Roll to Save vs Magic please. You need a ten or better on the roll to ignore the effect. I do not think that Nyx has a bonus against magic. If the roll fails, Nyx should begin coughing from time to time for the duration of this enchantment.

Samuel seems to be standing some kind of line, "Does it really matter much, if its a job that pays and comes from a client that won't be sending you on a suicide mission?"

Ethan just looks at his new friend as if he had stated the most obvious thing possible. "A paying job that isn't a suicide mission is what I would call a 'good job'", he says to the Operator. "I'm new to this line of work but I'm pretty sure that's the definition for most people too."

When Sam tries to engage the trio of elves in friendly conversation and one seems to take offense, Ethan largely ignores the suddenly tense situation. No one had made specific threats or drawn a weapon after all. Instead he makes a plate of the offered food for himself. He looks over the choices and goes with what is familiar to him; eggs, bacon, a cherry tart and a cup of coffee which he douses with cream and sugar if any is to be had. He eats quickly, consuming all the food on the plate in short order but takes his time with the coffee.

Everyone who drank the coffee and did not make a successful saving throw versus magic of 11 or higher, you are struck by a very minor curse. You being coughing. It isn't a medical emergency. You just feel as if last last sip went down the wrong way. You may continue speaking and acting (mostly) unhindered. Just work it into your roleplaying.

Anyone who ate tarts will begin to feel a strong desire to flirt with the nearest available person of the sex that you find attractive. For some of you, that may be the Woman in Green who is approaching your table now.

The eggs and bacon are normal foods.

Ethan just watched as the Lady in Green approached him, Sam, the trio of elves and the talking horse. He had finished all the food on his plate and was now holding his coffee cup in his left hand. He thought he recalled hearing stories about how fairy food was supposed to be bad for you but nothing seemed to have happened to him. "At least not yet," he thought though he really didn't expect anything too. "It wouldn't be too smart to poison the people you want to hire but then again, these are 'magical creatures'. They probably think differently then we do."

When the verdant clad woman gets closer, Ethan sets down his coffee cup next to his empty plate and stands at parade rest. He chuckled in his mind about doing so. "Old habits and all that," he thought.

"The journey is not far from here, but ends in territory which is claimed by the regime of Lonestar. Coalition patrols passing nearby are a significant possibility, expected even. This is why I requested individuals which may pass for native humans while traveling. I can see that all of the applicants here meet this requirement to my satisfaction."

Looking squarely at Polkitain, she adds, "If your group is waylaid by coalition soldiers, I suggest strongly that you allow someone else to do the talking, sir."

"We do have methods for blocking the tracking abilities of the coalition dog boys temporarily. If any of you practice magic or would carry magic items, let us know."

"I understand that one of you is a doctor. That is fortunate as you will be operating without backup and support. I can provide you with basic provisions if you need them, and I can loan technowizardry items to your group including weapons if you require them. If no one in your group is carrying magic weapons, you will need them. I also have a Scroll charged with a Domination spell which can be useful for extracting information; the scroll is penned in Elven-Dragonese, so any one of the elves at this table should be able to invoke its magic. You will be providing your own transportation."

"I will get to the point. A weapons supplier has appeared somewhere near this location. She or he is not operating through the normal trade network of the Black Market. In fact, disrupting the market seems to be a goal of this new trader. She is selling weapons at far below their value or outright giving them away."

"Trouble began a three weeks ago when a small tribe of Brodkil raided a Coalition outpost. These demons were armed to the teeth with new weapons, unlike anything that Coalition Intelligence had seen. After the attack, the demons were tracked by a platoon of Dog Boys and eliminated by aerial bombardment. That was only the first incident."

"Two weeks ago, a faerie ring under my protection was attacked by slaver catchers. They abducted several nymphs and sprites. A survivor identified the attackers as wild Psi-Stalkers who were armed with the same new weaponry."

"In that last week, these weapons have turned up in a dozen different conflicts that I know of. Rival gangs in Houstass are using them to wipe each other out. Simvan are using them to stage coups against their tribal leaders. Human bandits have gotten their hands on them and are using them against Pecos in our towns and trade caravans. I have an unconfirmed report of a Worm Wraith armed with these weapons hunting settlers in Oklahoma. Just last night, I personally witnessed vampires armed with new weapons."

"One of the vampires did confess the origins of these new weapons to me before he died. I have coordinates and the name of a dealer. She goes by the name Glory, and she operates out of a location fifty miles due north of here. How she manages to do this inside of Lone Star territory without being caught is a mystery. She may be the mastermind or just a peddler."

"The job is to find the ultimate source of these weapons. Eliminate it if you can. If you cannot, relay the information to me. I won't risk sending my own people into Coalition Territory until you have identified a hard target for us. I will bring whatever forces from the Pecos Empire are necessary to finish the task. The faster you can perform the job, the better for everyone. The job pays five thousand to each of you in Black Market credits or the equivalent amount in gold coins which are minted with my own personal seal. The price is doubled if you can complete the task in one week. The price doubles again if you can eliminate the source of the weapons permanently. Above and beyond this, you may keep whatever plunder you encounter while executing this mission including any new-type weapons that you recover."

"Do you have any questions for me so far?"

A puck arrives with a tray full of glass mugs of beer.

Being an Operator and cruising to a new job should be a good enough cover if we have to....and if we have to have magical weapons then whatever means you have to keep the dogs from sniffing them out would be most appreciated. Ethan relaxed once the Green Lady spoke. Clearly she wasn't expecting anything like formal military discipline, customs or courtesies. He listened to her rather vague description about powerful new weapons and frowned. "The Coalition will be after the same things," he thought to himself. "The weapons and this mysterious 'Grace' selling them. That will make for interesting times, especially since we have to go into their territory."

He continued listening in silence. With so many people gathered, it was likely one of them would ask the same questions he would. If not, then he would ask when everyone else was finished. No need to talk over each other.

Re: Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

The lady takes one of the beers. In American, she continues, "I suggest drinking a beer. The coffee was not intended for you gentleman, and also this tastes good even without milk."

She takes a long drink from her glass. "Let's see. Mister Lund, you asked about the magic weapons. The vampires which I encountered last night were wild, but they were splintered off from a larger community which nests somewhere across the river. If your target has armed vampires once -- well -- I would certainly not risk going to her without a means of defending myself. The nosferatu are not the only creatures in the night who ignore most weapons. If you do not care for such things, I do not care if you go without. I will not be so crass as to tell you men how to defend yourselves."

Looking at Doc, she answers, "Doctor is it? Your math is correct. That is dependent on eliminating the source within one week. I will be here for an additional week afterward, and you may come back at any time to collect your wage."

"Polkatain, I think that you will have adequate time to learn about economics from your companions during this trip. For now, let me just make this clear. Buying out her stock is not sufficient. She might import more or create more, however she does it. She is disrupting commerce and destablizing what passes for a balance of power in this region. Pecos Bandits threaten to turn on each, and our contacts in the Black Market are furious that their sales have dried up. Furthermore, the weapons themselves are -- distasteful."

The lady presses a button on a mini-computer which sits on her side table. A hologram appears over the middle of the breakfast table.

"This is one of the weapons we confiscated. My people call them Ashalimur which does not translate to this language. They take many shapes: clubs, swords, knives, and even arrow heads. You will know them by the ornate runes which are etched into the flat of their blades. You will also know them because if you touch them: they will speak to you."

Anyone with Lore: Magic will recognize the runes without any roll necessary. Any of the elves might recognize the description from old stories told by their grandparents; chance = 100-IQ on D100 roll. Sam and Polk have only an IQ% chance of recognizing it. Ethan doesn't even get that. If someone has a Recognize Weapon Quality skill, you may roll that for additional information which I will share in private message.

The elves do recognize the runes as being the same used in creating runic items of legend.

Polkatain gets nothing from the use of his powers. What has been presented is merely a hologram-copy. The Lady in Green did not bring the actual blade here. At least he can be assured that no supernatural evil is lurking within his range currently.

As for techno-wizard weapons, yes, it would be VERY helpful to have some, but in all honesty, putting a water cannon hose connected to a storage bay full of water with a decent enough pump might work better against vampires at short ranges."

Re: Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

Samuel, the modification you mentioned with the water canon would take only a couple of hours of hard work if Sam did it in his shop and took advantage of the river water here in Silver Hill.

The queen listens to the discussion. During a lull, she turns again to one of her helpers and orders, "Bring me cases seven, thirteen, twenty-two, and twenty-four."

"Gentlemen, here are the items you have requested. First, I have prepared a data pad with all of the information we have. This includes all sightings of the new-type weapons which have been discovered by my sources along with the dates and coordinates. This includes every buyer we know. It also includes the coordinates given to us where you will find Glory and a map. I am afraid that I have no further information on the woman herself."

"Next, I have the scroll which I mentioned earlier. This paper is charged with all of the magic required to close a rift. Of course, rifts are unpredictable things, so I cannot make promises. One need not be a mage to invoke this spell, just literate in Elven-Dragonese."

"Third, I have those technowizard weapon which I mentioned. I do expect these returned. A pair of Telekenetic Revolers -- this set is decades old but I had my mechanics rebuild them. The advantage of these is that they may be recharged by either a mage or a psychic."

"Lastly, here are a different set of technowizard armaments. These are new models straight from Arnzo Weapon Manufacturing. They look like three knife grips, but built into each is a jewel. When activated, they produce magic knife blades. The ruby becomes a fire dagger. The aquamarine becomes a water dagger. The third with multiple jewels becomes a light dagger. These weapons do require spellcasting to recharge them after activating, so do not be wasteful with them."

"So gentlemen, how soon can leave?"

Re: Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...

Ethan had learned some…interesting things in the last few minutes. He had heard people speak about vampires but figured it was just rumors or at worst, more dimensional beings that just bore a resemblance to the legends of vampires on Earth. “Except everyone is talking about them like they are real and…are hurt by water hoses? Seriously?”

His mind was pondering that and the implied ramifications when the Green Lady displayed a hologram of an archaic weapon with unfamiliar symbols. He had a hard time seeing what all the fuss was about. Even assuming they could cut through anything, if this represented what ‘Glory’ was selling, he failed to see how they could be worth so much concern. “Melee weapons? That’s it? Unless the people wielding them are indestructible and can keep pace with the mobility of modern war machines, it doesn’t matter how deadly their touch is. Just saturate the person swinging them with enough firepower and there goes your problem.”

The elves and dragon on the other hand, currently in the form of a talking horse, seemed to think those swords were a huge problem. They started tossing out the phrase ‘rune weapon’ and he took a second look at the strange writing on the hologram. Ethan had run across Elder Futhark in his history studies but those symbols looked nothing like them. “One more thing to learn about my new normal,” he thought.

Then the Green Lady asked the group if they were ready to leave. That at least was a question he knew the answer to. “I can be ready to leave just as soon as I finish my coffee ma’am,” he says to her. It was the truth, he didn’t have much and most of it was packed on the Behemoth.
