Scene 1: It Was a Dark and Stormy Night...
It was a dark and stormy night in Silver Hill. Rain was welcome in the small village on the banks of the Rio Grande. Rain kept the lurking evils on the far side of the river at bay. Rain sometimes kept curious pilots from Lone Star away also. Rain was good, and thunder was better.
With the storm came other things. Travelers passing through the Pecos Empire arrived one at a time during the night or in small groups. They rented rooms at the only hotel. They came from different directions. They paid in different ways: black market credits, old coins, trade goods, or called-in favors. It wasn't unusual for the small inn to fill during the night.
It also wasn't unusual for large bands of Pecos Bandits to arrive during the night. Every morning, the residents would open their windows and look to see who was in town. Sometimes, a tribe of Monster Riders would have pitched tepees in the street. Other times, a mercenary army will have docked their barges at the river bank. Once, Chief Broad Tooth had his warlocks construct an entire fort at the edge of the town during a night, and they tore it down the next time.
On this morning, the storm broke and the towns people opened their windows as they always did. They saw a huge tent, nearly as large as the town itself, looming just passed the buildings. The tent blocked out the dawn sun it was so tall, like the big top circus tent of old legend. This tent, however, was green. The residents immediately knew that the Green Lady had returned.
This lady, the most mysterious of all the warlords of the Pecos Bandits, answered to no name. She had wandering into the Pecos territory from the Vampire Kingdoms one day. She was known as a powerful enchantress and rumored to be more. She always wore green for no clear reason. She rescued many fae and recruited them into her own private army.
Spriggans and Toad Stools and Night Elves and Sprites moved through the streets. They flew and walked this way and that, performing many chores for their queen. One fairy, a Night Elf with a surprisingly loud voice, fluttered in the crossroad. She shouted, "LISTEN ONE AND ALL. THE LADY IN GREEN HAD DECREED THAT EXPLORERS WILL HIRED FOR A SPECIAL TASK. SHE SEEKS HUMANS AND THOSE WHO CAN PASS FOR HUMAN AT A DISTANCE. THE NEED IS URGENT AND BENEFITS ALL GOOD CREATURES, BUT THE LADY PAYS HANDSOMELY ALSO. MEN-AT-ARMS SHALL APPLY AT THE LADY'S TENT." This message was repeated in Faerie Speak, Spanish, Elven-Dragonese, and even a broken version of Spanish.
At this point, all of the PCs are located in separate rooms at the inn. They have awoken due to the noise outside. The exception is Mister Samuel Lund who has resided in Silver Hill for a few weeks. He has been working at the town's mechanic while he has completed repairs and modifications on his own robot vehicle. Sam sleeps in his own rented space, an aging building which used to be a fire station at some point in the past. He is also awake now.
See the Main Map for the location of the Pecos Empire. See Maps #0 and #1 for views of the town. Robot horses are tied up outside of the inn. Part of the inn's service is providing a child watch the horses during the night.
