The Forest Primeval

The Great Southern Forest is one of three 'light' forests, as the townsfolk referred to them.  By light, they mean slightly less evil, from what you can gather.  What exactly that means has yet to play out...and with trepidation, you leave the town of Strange Port, with it's tall, strong walls behind and step beyond the roadway into the forest.

Within a few yards, the forest has completely enveloped you, blocking out all vestiges of the town.  Birds sing and insects chirp, but something about them sounds wholly wrong, like a single bad note hidden in an orchestra.  The forest canopy, while thick, fails to stifle the sun from flowing downward and the floor is littered with bushes and flowers of all sizes and colors...thankfully as there is very little in the way of thick undergrowth or brush to hinder your progress.

Ondrea stopped on the edge of the woods to try and pick up the trail the goblins took to the village. She guessed they must have also had the some wounded so she looks for brood or the like in the grass or spread on the leaves of the foliage. Once they have a trail she will lead the group deeper into the forest with Laz.

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 2):

"Thank you for stopping!  Why are we in such a hurry anyways?"
Grabbing a bite from his pocket.
"The goblins will still be there if we find them in a day or a week.  We are win their territory, and should proceed with caution, and move very slowly."

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 2):

Larzander wasn't much of a tracker. He hunted game as a boy, and went with the men of his village to hunt down orcs and such when he was younger but tracking was never his strong suit. The barbarian stood nearby Ondrea as she was searching for tracks keeping a watch on the woods around them while she studied the forest floor.

When Stoney spoke up Larz smiled at him, "We aren't hurrying my friend, you just have shorter legs. I'll walk slower if that suits you." he replied.

"You find anything yet warrioress?" Larz asked Ondrea, looking at her briefly.

Walking up to Larz, hip to hip.
"You do have longer legs, huh.  I wouldn't have guessed that."
Wiping the brandy, er sweat froths forehead.
"I'll keep up, nothing a tall one can do that I can't do!  Except maybe reach higher things.  Thanks though for the thought of slowing down."
Leaning in closer.
"Maybe slow down for this one"
Pointing with his thumb to Boris.
"He might not be able to keep up, look at his legs.  Built for sitting, and eating, not walking and tracking like us!"

Boris spoke from right behind Stoney (I mean, like right behind him!). "Steady on, mate. I can keep up with you. If yer heart don't give out first! Nice day for a stroll, innit?"</Blue>

Two things were clear: the halfling was very quiet, and exceptionally alert. Morso in the woods away from the town. His eyes darted back and forth, alert for ambushes and danger. <Blue>"Merciful Christ protect us. There's something not right about these woods, as God is my witness.

"I think I left my mule up this trail a little further."

The goblins, and their partners, seemed to either be completely stupid or absolutely fearless as they left a trail that a blind man could follow.  Broken branches, trampled flowers and blood were all easily visible heading off deeper into the forest bearing N by NE.

In reply to Laz Ondrea points to the swathe of trampled grass and other detritus littering the forest floor. "I think we my have surprise on our side it looks as if they did not expect anyone from the village to follow them."

She gripped the haft of her hammer with both hands as she continues further into the woods.

"Could be that they don't think anyone in the village is crazy enough to follow them." Larz responded. "I do believe they were mistaken." he added smiling at his own joke.

The tracks lead you further and further into the dark, cool interior of the forest; the pungent aroma of earth and decay soaking into your skin.  Large, old growth trees, perhaps several hundred or even thousands of years old begin to dot the landscape.  Vines as thick as an arm encircle limps and trunks, reaching upward into the canopy.  Distant sounds of wildlife, both benign and concerning, echo through air.  After several hours, the ground begins to soften and becomes noticeably moist.  Before long, much like the tracks you are following, your feet begin making deeper and deeper impressions into the black, fertile soil.  The trees are beginning to thin out somewhat and soon you find hollowed out, long dead trunks still standing.

In reply to The Powers That Be (msg # 10):

This was an easy walk for Boris. He wasn't sure how the others were getting on! Boris settled his pack a little more comfortably and soldiered on. The Halfling looked alert and comfortable in the deep forest.

"Huh. This looks a little familiar, but no sign of my mule. Her remains should be around here somewhere. I had to leave her behind as a legion of bloody Saracens were chasing us. Pity. I would have thought they'd have butchered her remains and stolen my goods but at least there would be a carcass. Unless they brought the entire mule back with them to their foul campsite?

"And I don't know what to make of these dead trees, with their hollowed-out trunks. Insects? The Saracens? Other fell woodland beasts?"

Boris peered into a tree trunk, trying to discern what might have caused these old injuries and killed the forest giants!

In reply to Boris Underhill (msg # 11):

Stoney is laboring along.  Maybe too much drink, maybe too much time behind books, studying.  (Probably the first)
It's all he can do, to lift his little lefts up, and forward with each step, sweat dripping froths brown.
"Are we almost there yet?"
He says in normal volume, forgetting that they are trying to surprise the enemy.
