The Northern Passage

quote:
You stand upon a modest out-cropping over looking the land below and beyond.  A small, overgrown path runs down to your right and disappears around a large boulder.  The forest sits below you, thick and dense.  Beyond, in the distance, you can see a large track of landscaped terrain (at least, it is barren of trees and large collections of thick brush; it may simply be an old road not yet fully reclaimed by nature).  It appears to run, as far as you can see, from side to side while along it's upper most edge sits another treeline.  Judging from the map, you're pretty certain you have somehow made your way through the forest and emerged clear on the northern most edge somewhere.  Scanning the terrain below, you spy what appears to be a village, although details are scant from your vantage point.  The sun still shines brightly above but, if you are correct about your position on the map, you may only have a few hours left of daylight.

"Well I'll be."
Taking near his last sip out of his winesken, holding it up and shaking it.
"I vote we go to the village, we could use a soft bed to sleep in, possibly some supplies, too."

Not waiting for a response, Stoney starts out of the cave.  Turning back, and motioned with his arm.
"Shall we, lets go.  Not much daylight left, and Id like to be in the village before dark.  Plus Larz could use some medicine."

"I daresay we failed. We didn't find the Saracens' camp, unless this is it. We certainly didn't find any more. I say yes, let's stay the evening there and then come back. Around the forest. At least we found some valuables in the temple.

"The trapped passage we just explored must be an escape route, trapped to prevent someone from coming in via that route.

The Northern Passage

Descending the cliff-side, while easy due to an old, well worn pathway, managed to become rather time consuming as the lower you moved the thicker the vegetation became.  Finally moving off the rock to solid earth, you find the air slightly warm and moist as the thick, enveloping canopy acted like a jar.  Thick moss hung everywhere and completely encrusted any stones or boulders.  The warmth is a nice change but soon becomes slightly annoying.

Continuing along the pathway, the village begins to come into sight, although something seems off.  As you creep closer, your hearts sink as you find it empty of life.  Six separate buildings stand in a ring around a central well and large fire pit.  Two of the buildings had signs hanging above their doorways; one read 'Ingdrich' and the other 'Woods Hollow Inn'.  Aging the structures was difficult as they were encased by the forest.  Vines and branches and limbs twisted in and out of the structures.  Moss and flowers of all type covered them in intricate and beautiful designs.  It almost appeared as if the village had sprang to life from some strange plant.  The wood, while slick, appeared to still be just as strong as the day it was first cut with no obvious signs of wear or weathering.  Even more intriguing was the fact that the ground was not overgrown in any sense

There are no visible signs of footprints inside any of the buildings, i.e. muddy footprints or the like.  No dust appears visible inside either making it further difficult to judge if anyone had recently walked there.  The ground, too, possessed no identifiable markings of any kind to indicate recent movement.

"I can't fathom this. No people. But no signs of struggle. Branches go through the walls, but there is no dust, no weeds of underbrush. And there is an unnatural sheen to the wood. Is this ville cursed? Is this some kind of simulacrum? A faerie village?"

Drawing his sword he grabbed a long tree branch and chopped it off. Trimming it he was left with a ten-foot pole. Using this he proceeded to poke the wall of the building and probe inside the entrance.

Ondrea stands with Boris in the center of the 'town'.  Both darting their gazes about for any signs of movement or worse.

As Boris begins probing, he finds everything to be as expected...at least of a structure not encased in wilderness.  The walls and the floor were equally solid and sound.  Nor did any sort of booby trap discharge or creature appear or move.

As Larz peers into the inn, he is pleasantly surprised to find that, not only did everyone apparently leave in a great rush, but they left all their provisions.  From his vantage point, he could clearly see several shelves lined with bottles, presumably various liquors, as well as a large platter adorned with several loaves of bread.

Grabbing a coin and placing it on the counter.  Head turning left, then right peering down the bar looking for service.  Knowing darn well there wont be anyone there, but more out of respect.
Leaving the coin on the bar, and with no response from the barkeep, Stoney helps himself.
Grabs a mug, and a bottle of some spirits.  (No pun intended) Pours a fair share that the coin should cover.
"Anyone else want a glass, I'm buying."

Fate was not upon your side as half way back up the mountain the light ran away behind the distant horizon.  Your sense of timing seemed to be rather off as hours seemed to come and go at will.  Perhaps you are simply tired from the travel and need a rest to collect your bearings.  While the moonlight was sufficient to see the trail by, your movement was further hindered; reaching the mouth of the cave long after sunset.    Gazing out at the landscape once more, a curious sight catches your attention.  A brilliant orange glow dances against the trees causing shadows to jump and flit about from branch to branch.  The town, or at least where you think it was, seems to be lit up, as if someone came home and lit all the torches and lanterns.

He snorted at Ondrea's suggestion the villains were behind this. "Foolishness! Not the Saracens we seek, they are brutes and not of a magical nature. No. This was CLEARLY witchcraft. This is a Witchery kind of thing, mark my words! We're probably doomed just by eating this tainted food and tainted, yet delicious, wine.

Inch by inch you work your way back through into the cave system.  Before long, you are once more treading down the very same halls you had originally passed.  Leaving no stone un-turned, you discover no further passages, concealed or otherwise.  You have only two areas you did not venture into, the back doorway in the 'alter' room and the secret passage first discovered upon entering the cave/temple.

Once more you stand within the echoing silence of the alter chamber.  Moving towards the rotted, broken door, you find no traces of any recent markings upon the floor.  The dust and old cobwebs cover the doorway from top to bottom; a quick flash of a torch makes easy work of the obstructions.  Gazing inward, you see a small hallway that leads towards another chamber; its' door resting in similar fashion the first.

With Larz and Stoney keeping watch at the entrance, Boris and Ondrea begin to creep forward.  Once more you find the dust almost choking as it begins to swirl around from your movements.  Finding no traps to speak of, you both reach the second doorway and gaze inward.  It appears you may have located the high priest room (or whoever it was).  Immediately in front of you sits a splintering desk with all manner of rotted papers and books strewn about.  The floor was littered with broken objects.  Further in the room expands sharply to the right where, one can only assume, his/her living quarters existed.  Several chairs, the majority of which were smashed, sat around a small wooden table still set with a few unbroken cups.  A small dresser with the drawers pulled out and broken sat against a nearby wall.  At the very end rested a simple bed.  Despite the layers of dust and age, the sight of a body was still visible.  Aging it was no simple task but clearly it had been there for some time as virtually no meat was left on the bone.  A single arrow ran through the rib cage and was embedded into the bed beneath.

The skeleton is definitely that of a human.  The clothing is pretty much in tatters but nothing identifiable can be seen.  The silent mass of bone does, however, seem to have a few extra trinkets; two rings, one on each hand and a necklace.  Blowing of the dust you find the necklace is a large, metal circle with some sort of cylindrical crystal suspended within it lashed to a small chain with some cording.  One of the rings appears to be of solid gold with an emerald set within and the other appears to be carved from some sort of dark stone.  A closer inspection reveals a crude carving of a grotesque sort of face.  It seemed rather similar to the large carving that surrounded the entrance to these caverns.

What remains of the books that are still visible, you find the majority seem to be encyclopedic in nature, more specifically, they seem to be catalogs of known magical artifacts.  The papers, however, seem a tad more enigmatic...

Anyone checking over the papers if I could have an Intelligence check

It's hard to decipher what exactly the papers may have said as the symbols are completely alien to either of you.  However, the drawings, even the ones damaged with decay, were incredibly detailed.  Many seemed to show the inner workings of various devices, or at least the plans for them.  One lone, solid sheet clearly was some sort of theft deterrent device; a rather nasty one as it employed a bear trap like system.  A few pages you found had been badly burnt with only three pages that survived legibly.  They depicted something wholly different.  Even the symbols used were different from the other pages.  The drawings, while still very detailed like the others, were technical drawings of any sort but what exactly they were supposed to enshrine was beyond you.

OOC: Not sure why you're laying a cow on Boris but it apparently worked XD

quote:
As you slowly descend the staircase, the strong, musty odor of mold crawls up your nostrils.  The carved stone floor is slick, forcing you to move slowly so as not to lose your footing.  The passageway itself is rather small, only a few feet wide and barely tall enough for Larz and Ondrea to pass through and still remain upright; at points both are forced to bend over in order to continue.  Unfortunately, the torchlight is not strong enough for you to see any possible end to the tunnel forcing you onward.

As you move forward you once more encounter the sinister spiked grate that nearly ended Larz' adventure.  The hole in front of it still remains open as well as the passage forward.

quote:
The hole itself turns out to be a sharply declined ramp.  The trap was obviously setup to drop one or two unsuspecting individuals down the ramp to some unknown, and probably unsavory, locale, then seriously hampering any attempt at rescue.  The ramp itself is carved from the raw stone and seems to be coated in a clear, viscous fluid.  Crossing beyond it should be no problem, provided no more surprises have yet to be sprung.

The Catholic Church of Outremer believes that the One True God often works His miracles through these other gods. As He is the wellspring of all that is good in this way His love may still heal His faithful and provide other miracles, no matter the source whence it is channeled. These gods are not false Gods or in conflict with Him, and are holy beings still above the angels and saints. In this way a Christian priest may still heal a worshiper of Pelor, and vice-versa, as long as they maintain their faith on their own heavenly sovereigns.

He carefully crossed the mouth of the ramp in the floor, intending to continue down the passage. As he moved he examined the floor of the cramped corridor to determine if the unknown individual they were tracking had fallen prey to the spiked grating and the obliette hidden below. He also examined the ceiling and walls as he went, looking for danger or anything unusual.

Slowly, cautiously, and with several members bent at an uncomfortable angle, the four of you continue forward down the narrow corridor.  Inching along, your pace is slow, but with such caution comes the ability to both detect and avoid a second trap; similar in both style and sinister nature as the first such encountered.  Losing track of the exact distance you covered, you reach the end of the corridor and are greeted by a small stone and iron door.

The door creaks, scrapes and howls loudly as you inch it open.  Anything in the hallways behind you, or in front for that matter, would certainly have heard the jarring sounds of metal and stone scrapping against one another.  As the room beyond slowly begins to appear your eyes are greeted by a spectacular sight...gold and lots of it.  Forgetting about the door as it slams into the wall, you find a sight like no other sitting before you.  Gold, in every known form, lays strewn about a room that looks more similar to an amphitheater than a hidden chamber.  Stone rings, descending into smaller and smaller rings, are heaped with untold riches as coins, cups, rings and all matter of treasure litter the room.

The tinkling sound of metal against metal continues to resonate around the room.  Soon, movement can be seen below the piles of gold and treasure.  Within moments, the entire room is ringing with the sound of coins falling and cups bouncing about when suddenly, from through the pile of loot, a hand appears.  It is necrotic, with huge patches of skin and muscle completely wasted away.  It seems to sit...staring(?) at you?  It is joined by a second, unattached hand.  This one seems in even worse shape than the first with holes large enough to look through and two of the fingers completely missing.  A third appears just as suddenly, this one still had part of the forearm attached and looked much fresher than the previous two.  Before you know it, a dozen or so hands fill the room.  In unison, they seem to stare at the group.  With each flinch you make, they respond in some manner.  As you blink away a small speck of dust from your eye, they launch forward, scrambling over the mounds of swag; the tinkling of coin now appears to sound like a thousand death bells.

The assault is almost instantaneous on both sides.  Several claws launch themselves high into the air, sailing towards the group, while the rest skitter across the treasure laden floor.

Ondrea - Your hammer crashes into the floor sending gold coins flying every which direction as you crush one of the hands.  Just as rapidly, you swing your hammer skyward sending another claw crashing into the ceiling.  It collapses to the floor and continues to move no more.  Two more snake their way across the floor and, only a foot or so away, leap from the ground towards you.

Boris - Loosing your projectile, it sails right on target and smacks sickeningly into one of the half rotted appendages.  An equally nauseating *CRACK* emanates from the now motionless hand.  Two more race towards you as you dance and sidestep their advances when suddenly one of them springs from the ground and latches into your shoulder.  You howl in pain as dark, decay-laden claws sink deep into your shoulder (4 points of damage).

Stoney - Pray as you may and pray as you might, no divine intervention is to be found in this fight XD (they simply do not respond in any perceivable manner to your attempt at turning).

Larz - While your wild swings do little in the way of actual damage or even contact, it acts as a temporary shield as the two hands approaching you dart back and forth in a frantic effort to break through your defense.

Larz - Bringing your sword down hard upon the cursed hand, you cleave it two sending chunks of rotted flesh and black ichor everywhere.  Swinging with such force, your sword smacks hard into the rock beneath with a chilling *CLINK* that rattles your teeth and ears.  The blow, thankfully, forces the remaining hand to scatter to the side, missing its opportunity to strike.

Ondrea - Swinging your hammer around aids with the momentum to twist enough to avoid the flying monstrosities.  Landing not far from you, they turn and face(?) you down once more, undaunted by both your size and weapon.

Boris - Your movements begin to take on a marionette-like appearance as you simultaneously dance to avoid the still moving hand and stab at the one imbedded in your shoulder.  As you dig the blade in, the hand tightens its' grip even further (3 points of damage).

Stoney - Distracted with your unanswered prayers for help, you never have a chance to see the three hands skittering from the room towards you.  The first to reach you latches firmly into your ankle, its corrupted talons sinking deeply into your skin; it nearly severs your Achilles tendon.  Between the suddenness and the pain, you collapse backwards onto the floor.  The other two hands quickly set upon you, with one biting deeply into your left forearm as the other begins to carve a hole into your chest (17 points of damage).

Re: The Northern Passage

Both Ondrea and Larz dispatch the remaining hands confronting them.  Boris continues to dance about as the claw attached to his shoulder relentlessly digs its' fetid, rotting claws deeper into his shoulder (2 points of damage) while the second decrepit hand finally finds its' way onto his feet and begins moving upward.  Stoney continues to thrash around, shouting loudly, as the animated hands continue to claw and rend at his flesh; blood begins to saturate the floor from his wounds.

Just to clarify...no more claws (that you can see) are attacking either Ondrea or Larz.  Boris has two that have set upon him although only one is currently damaging him.  Boris is on the floor with three hands simultaneously ripping and rending him to pieces.

Re: The Northern Passage

Ondrea times her attack perfectly, connecting with the hand (and not Boris' shoulder) with the precision of a pro golfer.  The force knocks the hand into the adjacent wall so hard you can hear the cracking of several bones; the skin ruptures from the kinetic force sending chunks of putrid flesh into a pattern of corruption upon the wall.  Boris, in his panic, is not so lucky with his timing.  Attempting to stab the hand upon his shoulder, he is mid-swing as Ondrea knocks it clear.  His dagger sinking deeply into his shoulder.  Larz, in turn, races over to Boris and kicks one of the hands off of him.  It rights itself and charges back towards him but not before Larz crushes it with his boot.  The sickening sound of wet, stretching leather can be heard as he grinds the black and green colored hand into the floor.

You find the hands remarkably easy to grip when they are distracted with rending someone else.  After a brief struggle, you manage to crush, break, squash, and otherwise obliterate the remaining hands.  A few extra hard grinds with your boot heels and you are satisfied that they will rise no more.

Bracing yourselves as best you can in the circular room, you begin heaving frantically on the rope.  The tension is almost immediate and you are forced to lean back just to create enough inertia to begin pulling Ondrea upwards.  Inch by inch, hand over hand, the rope slowly begins to emerge from the darkness.  Suddenly, a loud roar of clanking metal rises from the depths and the three of you are nearly pulled down as well as some unseen force has appeared somewhere below.

Re: The Northern Passage

Stoney and Boris struggle to hold the weight of Ondrea as Larz starts to work his way down.  Unfortunately, the stone passageway was designed to both cause less friction and give no hand holds.  With that, Larz loses both his feet, slamming down hard onto the stone ramp and begins to roll, head over heels down into the darkness.  Gaining momentum as he rolls, he explodes into the chamber.  Clipping Ondrea as he falls, he crashes into the pile of treasure and the roar of banging metal reverberates in everyone's ears.

Larz: I'm assuming you didn't bring a lit torch or any sort of light source?

Boris:  Depending on what you do, I will need some more rolls...
If you're just holding the rope and not trying to fight against it, I'll just need a DEX check.
If you're actively resisting any weight or resistance the rope encounters, I'll need a STR check

Try as he might, Stoney is unable to keep his grip upon the large warrior but manages to keep himself from falling down after him.  Lucky for him, Boris had gotten the rope attached to an anchor point before Larz slipped down.  Then you notice the tension on the rope has completely dissipated.

Stoney indeed misses his attack as the blob like creature retracts its pseudo-appendage as he swings.  Ondrea manages to connect with a sickening *SQUISH* but the strange creature appears unfazed (to be fair, it has no face of any kind so judging a reaction would be near impossible).  As she pulls her hammer back to striking position again she hears a strange hissing sound.  Glancing over, her eyes go wide as the section of hammer that connected with the beast was bubbling and foaming; small bits of metal could be seen falling from the face of her now deeply pockmarked weapon.

As Ondrea and Stoney attempt to hold the creature off, Larz focuses his attention on the tunnel they entered through, hoping for signs of a handhold of any fashion.

Both Ondrea and Stoney connect (AC 6 so Ondrea only hit with her first attack) with enough force that the creature seems to splatter, leaving two small puddles and the original larger one.  As they pull back, both of their hammers are foaming and hissing, more chunks of metal falling off and leaving the hammers' service marred deeply.  That's when you notice the treasure horde is suffering a similar fate as cups, helmets and coins begin to melt and ooze together in small, golden pools.

Re: The Northern Passage

In reply to Boris Underhill (msg # 275):

Slinging her backpack over her arm Ondrea said "Agreed, lets get going and hopefully we will be back before night fall." She did not believe the last statement but she was sure she wanted to leave this place.

Re: The Northern Passage

In reply to Ondrea Avalor (msg # 276):

"If we go west to the road and then south it will be much longer than the directly south through the swamp. But there is less danger, methinks."

Re: The Northern Passage

In reply to Boris Underhill (msg # 277):

Shaking a now empty wineskin.

"Ok, lets take the route which gets us to town the quickest.  This place is boring me!"

Rummaging through his pack, before slinging it.

"Ahh, I knew you were in there!"

Popping the top off his newly found wineskin.
"Refreshing!"
As he drinks some.

Re: The Northern Passage

OOC: So the plan is to return to Strange Port then?  Are you heading back the way you came originally or trying another route, as I see some discussion on the matter?

Re: The Northern Passage

In reply to Stoney Applesmith (msg # 278):

"I think west to the road is quicker than south through the swamp. Once we get to the road we can take that to Strange Port. Trust me, I know a thing or two about travel."

Boris shouldered his backpack and commenced walking west towards the coastal road.
