Re: Chpt 1.4 - Jzadirune
As he moves to follow Filimena amd Omaron, Marik stare in front of him, getting lost in thought. All the events of the day pass before his eyes: The Orphanage, the poem, Ghelves locks, Jzadirune, the skulks, the "king". They all appear to him, separate, in appeareance without links...like islands in the sea, yet still so close to each others. But the Elders always taught him to remember how all fates are entwined in a intricate thread. At night sometimes, alone looking at the stars, he could see glimpses of that thread. The trees...The stars...the moon...his beating heart and Rani's...he could almost see the lines that connect them all.
He thinks. First there was that poem, given to them by the Church of St-Cuthbert. He remember what it said...
The locks are key to finding them
Look beyond the curtain, below the gate,
Beware the doors with teeth.
Descend into the malachite 'hold,
Where precious life is bought with gold.
Half a dwarf binds them, but no for long
Even if he tries to not put much stock in vague scripture provided by priests, he must admit their current endeveour has been coherent with the wording provided. Going to Ghelve's locks was indeed what brought them to Jzadirune and its "doors with teeth".But what about the malachite? To his knowledge, they hadn't happen upon any traces of malachite in this settlement. Where could you find malachite? In a mine, probably?
Then he thinks of the "dwarven king" they encountered, his lament about creators betrayed by their own accomplishment and the Fall of Jzadirune. How could those be linked to the Underdark and the rapture of childrens?
Upon until now, they saw the denizen of Jzadirune enjoyed illusion magic, sought to use it to embellish their daily lives with images of greenery and the calming sounds of birds and children laughter. Could they have created something that wasn't an illusion? They were those golden masks at the entrance, but Marik fails to see how that could play into anything.
But where did the skulks and spiders came from? Ghelve's mentionned the settlement had been attacked some 75 years ago by the Drows, who unleashed a plague making people disappear into nothingness.
The masks, the "king", could it be all that remain of the souls of Jzadirune? Images they made of themselves before succombing to the plague? But where would the betrayal come from? Did the dwarves dug too deep, betrayed by their own folly? Did their magic was responsible for the Drows coming?
"They do are able to make portals" thinks Marik, remembering the portal they came from. Following this logic, it could be that a Dwarf opened a portal to the Underdark.
Could it be that some dwarf summoned Drows upon his or her own settlement? That could certainly be a fitting betrayal. But why? To exact revenge upon the settlement? What dwarf could be desperate enough to appeal to the Darks Ones and their tricks? It would be well known from the Drows reputation that they would wipe out or enslave any denizens of the settlement they would find, even the one that brought them here. Bargaining with Drows only mean they have more time to plot your demise, and devise you a even crueller fate for their own amusement.
"Unless that was the intention" thinks Marik further. Maybe someone did want to wipe out this settlement and erase anything in it...
But the childrens? What of them? Why bring them here, in Jzadirune? The poem mentionned they could be sold for gold...
Then the idea form into Marik's head. A lone Dwarf, a survivor of a lost settlement, known by the Drows to be able to open doors and portals, forced into a cruel service as linchpin of a slave market. Ghelve...
OOC: Sorry, long post...I enjoy writing Marik train of thoughts sometimes, and I wanted to collect various bits or informations and my own hypothesis in one place for quite some time. Hopefully, it will be a interesting read for you too.
