And So It Begins....
Gerard awoke with the rays of the sun drifting in between he cracks of the shutters. The young noble could hear the activity in the courtyard below. The snorts and neighing of the horses as if they were being readied for travel. Whether it was the wine, rest or ministrations of the physician his ribs seemed less sore. As he sat upon the side of the bed Gerard heard the knock upon his door.

"Signore? Are you awake. Andre wishes you to break your fast with him. The horses... your horse is being readied for the journey to the Viscomte's Chateau. Signore?" came the muffled voice of the old swordmaster.

And So It Begins....
The morning found Gerard feeling much better than the night before, He slowly rolled out of bed, just as Fortunio knocked on his door. It seemed the son of the lord wished to break their fast with him. He moved to the door and unlocked and opened it, before retreating to the wash basin.

“Bonjour, Fortunio. Yes, I shall attend to Monsieur Andre presently.” Said as Lazare tended to his morning Ablutions at the basin.

As Gerard dried himself with a towel, then garbed himself and slipped his boots on, he asked his old teacher a question. “Have you seen my retainer, and if so, is he well? And what about my weapons?”

The Italian swordmaster entered the room with the grace of a Master. He closed the door and leaned against it. As Gerard asked his question Fortunio nodded.

"Si Signore! Just now in the courtyard. He is with the Baron's grooms. Making sure our steeds are ready for our journey to the Viscomte's Chateau. He looked well enough and was armed. A brace of pistols Signore. That and an old sword. Did he fought in the war di Henry Signore?"

Fortunio gave a slight shrug "It would seem all is forgiven."

Gerard heard Fortunio’s new, and then smiled. “Excellente. Let us not keep Andre waiting, my friend. I must say my farewells, and then return to the Vicomte to accomplish that end of things. Perhaps then, we can be on our way to Rouen."

Gerard left the room and headed towards the stairs.

Gerard made the courtyard where Andre and several grooms awaited him. Of course Jacques was there as well and the retainer greeted the nobleman with a smile and nod of greeting.

"Monsieur? Are you well? I have asked about you and have only told that you have been cared for by this man's servants and his physician. You seem well enough but I would hear it from your on mouth." the old campaigner said as a hand, if by accident brushed the hilt of his antiquated sword.

Andre gave Gerard a slight bow "Go on Monsieur Lazare. Feel free to tell your man that we have made amends and that you all are free to leave Les Pavements, not only with my leave but also with my blessing. You made a great impression upon my uncle. Please give my aunt and the Viscomte my blessings. Tell my aunt that her husband misses her gratly and that her place should be here with him."

Fortunio came up behind Gerard dressed for the road and dressed in a leathers. His one eye looked about the courtyard as if he was sizing up an opponent in a duel... looking for weaknesses andd advantages that would allow him to win such a fight. Yet, he did not speak but awaited Gerard's own words it would seem.

Gerard made his way out into the courtyard, and felt himself smiling at seeing Jacques. The young nobleman raked the older man that was his retainer, from crown to boots, seeking any signs of mistreatment. “Bonjour, Jacques. I have been treated as a guest in this house, and Monsieur Andre, is an honorable host.”

Lazare turned and made a curt bow of one equal to another, for Andre was not the Baron, yet.

“Monsieur Andre, in spite of our misunderstanding in the beginning of our relationship, it is ending well. I thank you for the use of your Physician, and the hospitality of your home. Please tell your uncle, the Baron, I shall pray for his well-being.”

With that being said, Gerard swung up into the saddle.

Jacques D'Embrun beamed as he saw Gerard "I too have been treated well, even if I was kept apart from you Monsieur. I am glad to see you up and walking. The last time I saw you... well you were in a cart."

Andre bowed to Gerard "As Monsieur Lazare has said, that was a misunderstanding and one I regret. I shall tell my uncle this for you Monsieur. This will no doubt please him greatly. He asked me to give you this, a letter of credit, and to deliver it to a banker in Rouen. This too will please him beyond measure."

Andre held out the letter, which was sealed with the Baron's sigil.

Fortunio too climbed into the saddle and moved his horse near Gerard.

Gerard accepted the sealed letter, and slipped it into his shirt. “I shall deliver this, as the Baron has requested of me. I wish you well, Monsieur.”

With that being said, Lezare tapped spurs to the horses’ flanks, and headed for the road, and back to the estate of the Vicomte.

Gerard would wait until they had ridden well away the estate of the Baron, before he would turn in his saddle and address. “Tell me true, Fortunio, those rogues that captured me, they are Andre’s creatures, and not the Barons. Oui?”

Fortunio nodded "Si Signore! Those men are Andre's henchmen. Le Baron sees few outside Andre, his wife La Baroness, and his Physician. Even i have not had the old man's ear. What do you make of it? It would seem there is bad blood betwixt the Viscomte and Andre si? I have not met this Viscomte but at least he has his title while Andre seeks le Baron's own."

The Italian sat easy in the saddle as they rode onward. Jacques took his position at the rear, his eyes darted this way and that as if the old campaigner expected an ambuscade!

“Gerard listened to what his one-time fencing master told him.

“ Do you think that this Andre is indeed the Baron’s nephew? And if so, why would he send his rogues to waylay the Baronesses’ coach? What could he gain with either her death or capture? He has the Baron’s favor already, so it makes no sense to me. What are your thoughts, Fortunio?”

Fortunio frowned as he listened and finally shrugged nonchalantly.

"Si! I do think he is the nephew... but only Mi Dio knows. Perché? In truth those are the men he knows. Andre lived how he must si? He had no money... Was not raised well no? His padre died when he was young and... mama shortly after. It took time to find his uncle. For some time he did not know. So he lived... the best way he can. This is my thought si? Now why the Baroness... Andre is no well known. The Baroness has friends in high places si? Just what would happen if... somehow... she could have the baron plant ah bambino in the belly si? I have seen stranger things. The baron is... vecchio... old but not dead."

And So It Begins....
The small group followed the road that lead them back to the estate of the Vicomte, and from there to…..Rouen. Lazare listened to his Italian companion, as they rode side by side.

“Oui, I suppose it is, as you say, but it still does not give him the right to waylay a Noble woman on the King’s Road. But as long as she remains in the Vicomtes household, she should be safe enough. I shall report my findings to the Vicomte, speak the words of the Baron to his wife, the Baroness, and then we shall be upon our way. What say you, to that, Fortunio?”

Lazare still had a lingering doubt, in the back of his mind, as concerned the well-being of the Baroness, but he had done what could be done, to his way of thinking.

Fortunio smiled and gave Gerard a curt nod.

"Si! Bene Signore! I will be very happy si!" he said smiling as they rode.

Gerard's eyes caught movement upon the road. A horseman leading a line of soldiers it seemed. They were heading in Gerard's small company's direction. The lead rider seemed to sit well in the saddle and had two pistols holstered on either side withing easy reach. there were in total of about twenty riders followed by some two score on foot. The first appeared to musketeers and the second carried long stout pikes upon the shoulders. All were dressed in all manner of clothes but all wore red sashes and red plumes or feathers in their hats or bassinets.

As the lead ride caught sight of Gerard's group he called a halt and then waited on the nobleman... to announce attentions.

When Lezare saw the soldiers, a smile came to his face, as he had always wished to be a Cavalier, growing up. Gerard was about to have his small band move off the road, and give way to the soldiers. But when he saw the small column halt, and the obvious officer seeming to wait for Gerard to make the next move, he said to his companions, “Wait here." then rode forward.

The young nobleman rode towards the officer and reigned up at a respectful distance, and raised his right hand in a gesture of greeting.

“God keep you this day, Monsieur.” This was a common enough greeting in France, and many other places.

The horseman gracefully doffed his wide brimmed hat with a scarlet plume as he bowed forward while keeping steady upon his stallion.

"Bonjour Monsieur! Ca va?" he said grinning ear to ear. "I am sure God is smiling upon me... my folk are known to be highly blessed. My name is Riordan O'Neill. Subaltern in the regiment of Hiérosme de Challons, comte de Challons. We are for Rouen but have yet one more stop to make. Are you familiar with these environs?"

The man spke his french well if lightly accented... English perhaps?

Gerard had heard of Barons de Challons. Through the Wars of Religion the barons de Challons were loyal allies of the princes de Condé and supporters of Henri de Navarre, later King Henri IV le Grand. The sixth baron, Salomon de Challons, elevated to count in 1594, was killed by an exploding cannon at the siege of Amiens in 1597!

The young Cavalier could not help but smile, when he heard where this merry band was heading for. He slowly nodded, then replied.

“Bein recontre, Monsieur O’Neill. I go by the name of Lazare, my Nom de la guerre. Indeed, I was born and raised in la Normandie. If I cannot help you, I am sure my retainer can. What information do you require?”

While he was no seasoned Captain, Gerard had been told and read much of warfare, so from an academic viewpoint, he was well versed. He took the measure of the men with Captain O’Neill.

Gerard notes the men are resting but really have not broken rank though some might my be resting on his pike or leaning upon a musket. The horses appear to be of good quality and well cared for. the weapons appear the same. They seem to be reasonably trained and disciplined.

"Aye Begorra! Seeems I be blessed indeed Monsieur Lazare!" O'Neill said with a wink grinning ear to ear.

"I be most obliged with your aid. We seek a place... nearby if the rumor is true. The Chateaux Les Pavements. Have you heard of such a place?" he said as he donned his hat.

When the “Englishmen” bespoke of where it was he was seeking, Lazare briefly looked to the Heavens, and wondered if god had a sense of humor, but then his attention returned to the fellow opposite him.”

“Oui, I and my companions have just departed the place you seek, perhaps an hour ago. I can give you directions there, for it is not far. If I might be so bold, as to ask, what business takes you there, Monsieur?”

Still smiling O'Neill nodded "Of course Monsieur Lazare. Le comte de Challons himself bid me stop by. The Baron is on good terms with de Challons and wishes his nephew to join the regiment. I aim to meet the man and judge him myself. Yet, as you have said... fortune has shined on me for you have been there and surely have met this very man. What is your measure of le Baron's nephew? If I may be so bold?"

Gerard just regarded the Captain of the troop upon the road. He was not sure how to answer that man's question,in truth. But an answer he did finally provide.

" I found him to be determined, Monsieur, very determined. He knows what he wants, and seems willing to do what needs doing, to achieve his goals."

"Dehvil taeke it! Monsieur Lazare, I like you! Your answer was quite... diplomatic if what I hear be true. You seem ah mahn well versed ta horseback. Have you served on campaign afore now?"

He turned to the horseman next to him and said "Let the men rest ah wee bit. The Nephew, it's him we t’be chaesin’ aftaer ‘er ahll."

Then back to Gerard "May I have ah word wi' ya then Monsieur Lazare? Just us two if ya please?"

Lazare raised an eyebrow, in response to the comment of the Nephew being “chased”. Perhaps it was just a turn of a phrase, but did this group mean his late host, good or ill.

When Captain O’Neill asked to speak with Lazare in private, the young nobleman slowly nodded.

"Comme vous le souhaitez, Monsieur.” And moved his horse off the road with the "Englishman”

O'Neill did likewise with grace as he came even with Gerard, the Irishman smiled.

"Please feel free ta speak yer miend  Monsieur Lazare. I'm an honest mohn aye! The truth be told I know not this mohn... Le Baron's nephew but I have been asked ta see him n' soon. I have heard there be ah slieght disagreement between him and ah-nother nobleman here aboots. I jus want to do the right thing fer de Challons, as I have promised.
