Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

The official, canon explanation for the Myriad-Taeltresin connection is that Myriad is a bit of accreted detritus from Yggdrasil that was orbitting Taeltresin that got large enough to spark Theosynthesis. It only exists along the 7th/8th/9th dimensional matrix, but it's the closest thing that Taeltresin has to a bonafide moon.

A quick rundown of some metaphsyics:

- the 0th/1st/2nd dimensional matrix, or plane in common parlance, is the theoretical foundation; it's a two-dimensional space populated entirely by a lattice of vibrating strings.

- the 1st/2nd/3rd matrix is subreality, or the plane of platonic forms. The rules of reality are written here; it's why gods advance in discrete ranks, for example, and where souls, divinity, and such come from. The Blight poisoned the tree by corrupting this plane.

- the 2nd/3rd/4th plane is reality.

- the 3rd/4th/5th plane is metareality, or the inner/lesser astral plane, or the inbetween, take your pick. It's a transitional plane that contextualizes the varying timelines of realms to the greater continuity. This is where magic comes from, through the mechanic of arcane sublimation - a big movement in metareality can translate to smaller movement in reality if you have the knack and training to amplify your will. Magic is basically a tool that allows your will to gain mechanical advantage over an aspect of reality - perception itself already being something that demonstrably alters reality. All demiplanes and all realms exist within the context of the metareal, which is how gods create portals from one to the next, albeit with a degree of imprecision.

- the 4th/5th/6th plane aka the outer/greater astral regulates the spatial alignment of the Tree as a whole, specifically in relation to the Void and to itself - this where the Tree organizes which places advances at what rates (what is above and below) as well as what is central and what is peripheral. Navigating this requires a Lesser Gate.

- the 5th/6th/7th plane is the 'place betwixt' or shadow plane, a no-man's land of emptiness that is neither Tree nor Void. Note that Time, the 4th dimension, ceases to figure into things - making this plane timeless. Using time magic actually pulls you through here, creating a reflection of a potential reality within the emptiness - making it a mesh of alternate happenings, memories, and shadow-things. It's coterminous with reality.

- 6th/7th/8th plane is the Chaos Plane, the world of possibility and part of the very edge between Tree and Void. If the Tree was a supermassive black hole, which it kind of is (the 0th dimension being the singularity, and technically all of reality being projected from that singularity . . . . ) then this would be the event horizon, filled with superhot entropic discharge. The Mad are so juiced up and cause so much damage because they are projecting from here and carrying that entropy with them.

- the rest of planes are party to the unique physics of the void and aren't readily comprehensible.

Sure would've been nice to find this out in-character! On the other hand I reckon Liusna probably explained all this to Anna during her remedial Deep Magic lessons.

Yes, you can assume that. There's more to it than even that (each of the individual dimensions actually do their own thing and all of this does 'lay together' and there are cross-influences and -) but anyone with a cursory familiarity with deep magic will know about the matrices, and the existence of the various planes is common knowledge (any player can assume they know there is a real plane, a magic plane, something that's between realms, an up/down and inner/outer axis for where Realms exist on the tree, a shadow plane, and a chaos or near-void plane.)

I ran quite a few games that involved non-hostile interactions with void entities, who explained that for them, time was just one dimension of eleven, and that our reality was just small facet of the true nature of existence. That they became horrific creatures in our reality was either an artifact of decompression damage (similarly to pulling a boneless deep sea fish to the service, which is why the 'blobfish' looks so bizarre to us; it looks like a normal fish in the deep sea) or a result of a mortal mind's utter failure to perceive an entity that was moving in an extra dimension or two, or that wasn't using the 2nd dimension and so was a something with length and depth but no width and a presence in the aether (like the Color Out of Space).

That's what lead to me doing a Big Think about how theogenesis operates and how the metaphysical operation of multiple timelines being arrayed spatially without intersecting or being adjacent actually worked.

That was some delightfully dense exospeak on Liusna's part! I look forward to having lunch so I can try to tease meaning out of it without being distracted by my gut.

I really love a GM to goes the extra mile to try and figure out how their metaphysics work. It feels so good to make a theory about why something is the way it is and then go "aha, I was close!"

In reply to The Empress (msg # 623):

At a quick glance, it looks like Dust gods start with one major and three minor. Myriad gods started with two major and three minor.

So they don't quite map 1:1.

But I see some other stuff that probably needs to be translated over too, so I figure that will all get sorted out in time. :P

Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

Well I have no clue how empress plans to convert the myriad game into dust's mechanics.

Dust uses "degrees" of prowess and competency in various areas, and they are each on a 0-5 system (the default is 1 I think).  But the myriad letter-competencies are grading different things on a different scale. Plus you have all this mon hunting soul stuff, which dust doesn't have, that can help you increase your stats too.

In Dust, a single degree was a pretty big deal. Going from sorcery 2 to sorcery 3 unlocked a lot of potential for example.

I'm sure Empress has some sort of plan in mind, or can at least devise one. It might not be a 1:1 conversion but their can be equivalence between two values and systems.

Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

Well in the myriad system, even at char gen you have letter ranks for attributes. And some of them can be really strong (like B and higher). And degrees can't reflect that potency starting out - even a god who gets a starting boost in an area gets +1 degree in a single area.

Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

I'm not too worried. Though tbf I don't have much invested into the existing mechanics (as slim as they are) since I haven't really interacted with them much so far.

I imagine the non-1:1 translation is a big part of why Empress said she would work it out individually via PM's though.

Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

I wrote another Viese Cultural Update! Enjoy!

Viese Cultural Update: Bioglass:
Tools, armor, and even buildings crafted from iron and steel are an advantage many normal-sized mortals take for granted. Many industrial processes required to produce usable quantities and qualities of metals have a certain minimum size requirement; even a simple bloomery (which can be made quite small) requires significant strength and labor to extract usable metal product. Because of these engineering and labor challenges, the tiny and physically weak viese are incredibly ill-suited to metalworking of any significant scale. What metalworking capacity they have tends to be reserved for ceremonial jewelry and decorative structural inlays, and most if not all of their metal tools rely heavily on so-called thunderbolt iron.

Despite their incredible intellects, viese physical limitations conspired to see them using neolithic tools and materials even as their other scientific advances far outstripped their apparent industrial development. A variety of strong hardwoods grew in Arthos' jungles but with heavy labor so difficult extracting it often proved a bridge too far for the tiny viese.

Such seemed an inevitability... until one day, the goddess the viese had been waiting for would arrive and change things forever by blessing them with the bioglass plant. While sprung into existence by Anathema's divine intent the bioglass plant itself is wholly mundane and responds well to skillful cultivation. It is a slow-growing vine with a natural tendency to coat the ground in thick, tangled sheets. With only a minimum of work it can be woven into sheets of a super-strong wicker-like material for construction purposes, but most bioglass focuses on prolonged artful sculpting of the plant into the desired final form in a process remarkably similar to bonsai. The hardiness of the bioglass plant is such that tools crafted in this way can be repaired with nothing other than soil, water, and sunlight.

The bioglass plant has two distinct products that, while occasionally separated, are often worked in tandem. The leaves grow with a glassy, finely-grained, nearly diamond-hard structure and a bright green coloration. When damaged the outermost layer flakes away to reveal microscopically thin feather-edges between ten and fifty times sharper than even the highest quality steel can ever be. This is the "bioglass" for which the plant is named and is ideally suited for sharp tools, with multiple leaves laminated together to achieve the desired strength and thickness. Most of the plant consists of the stem material; woody and dark green in color, its strength compares favorably to the strongest of hardwoods. It is often used as a backing material to provide flexibility and impact resistance to sharp tools, but on its own also forms an excellent material for blunt implements.

Despite its astonishing qualities, bioglass is very much a material ideally suited to the viese. Its outstanding hardness is ironically its downfall, rendering bioglass too shatter-prone and thus unfit as a material for the stresses required by more conventionally sized mortals. Nonetheless, the viese occasionally trade bioglass tool knives to other mortals which then migrate throughout the realms and are often well-regarded for being self-maintaining and impervious to rust.

Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

Ugh, I had to walk in this 20 degree snow and ice today and I getting the sniffles :( and I didn't even achieve my goal, and now I have to do it all over again tomorrow, ugh. At least I had a date with a literal Handsome Jack that went well. He's fit and beardless, which goes directly against my whole 'husky werewolf boy' desire, but he also hugged me and I'm a slut for chaste affection from men that are eight inches taller than me >.> they just give such nice hugs . . .

As for the Dust stuff not being one to one, nobody has actually upgraded themselves at all yet so I think this is the best time to make any change! The letter grades really just determine the particular 'nature' of your dream-realm and how you interact with Myriad, rather than how things would shake out if you went up against another deity in their realm. Myriad has a pretty loose grip on reality atm, although it's about to get more real. One of the simplifications I'll be implementing is everyone having the Returned God type, since everything else was Yggdrasil specific, and that also addresses the discrepancy in the number of powers that would otherwise exist since Returned Gods start at the second degree in Divine Power and canonically every Myriad god is a relic of Yggdrasil given a new lease on life. This also helps to explain why the players gods are considered stronger than the gods of the Valley, who are all Neoacadem since they have the High God type.

Also, if you're considering doubling up and making a dream self or a real self, please do so sooner rather than later since whenever you do so, your accomplishments to date don't transfer :) I'm not about to try to convert one to the other, kk?

Re: OOC CHAT 2: Not Over You

Ok yeah I'm about to update. It's been freezing winter up here with ice and snow and there's this new boy who took me on two dates and I love his apartment because it's tiny but has as much natural light as a studio that I'd model in.

But aside from that. Y'all. If you thought the stuff between Ophelia and Bezaleel was good, please for a moment enjoy how my fiancee described our lovemaking today when I was whispering sweet dark nothings to her at work:

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
"Your eyes, like black holes, bore into my soul.
My body sways, gently, keel to the side and slumps.
Prone, you come to me and hover, breath warming my cheek.
My chest rises and falls in rhythm with your intonation-
*you are mine you are mine you are mine*

Teeth gnash and catch and slash me open with blood pooling in the depths of my heart.
Your touch on my breast boils my blood - it rises to meet you, alive and inside me.
Pushing poking prodding your in, you enter and own all you seek.
Your head burrows in my chest like so many knives and you have carved your name for none else to see.
Heart now suspended in your mouth, I gasp and shudder.
Each movement of your mouth causes another beat.
I am alive.
I am alive for you."

And then later:

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
"The lady bathed in grey descends like the thrush from the tree, sharp and stabbing.
Her face hides from the moonlight yet glows with a milky translucence.
She is twilight and shadow born with form.

Arm raised to the heavens, the knife glints and sparks before it, too, descends.
Does it find purchase? Only in my breast.

She bathes in the essence that surges forth and is coated in ME.
I breathe her and she eats me and I feel her teeth catch.

I die and am reborn and become the night.
I shine for her.
I am but a servant meant to reside in the shadows and be heard only in the whispers of lost souls who wander in the desolate wilderness and wind their way through the margins of pages to find her.

She is our queen."

I personally think they are quite great, and especially filled with such passionate metaphors and visualization.

It by far trumps even my most favorite of my own poetry. When your fiancée said she wrote poetry but hadn't in a while. I didn't realize she would make my own works pale like so with such ease. Definitely going to have to give her much praise on it.

I wouldn't let that one out of your grasp Empress. Not in the least.
