In reply to Relic GM (msg # 29):

Lt. Zedrick Sloane looks out the viewer at Starbase 21.  Zed (to all his friends) is wondering if this assignment is a step up or not.  Fresh off a combat duty this new assignment seems a huge departure.  But today is not the day to worry about that.

Today he gets to meet his new crew mates. Zedrick says to himself "Well I guess its time to dock". Zedrick taps the comm "USS Thames to Starbase 21, requesting permission to dock."

Meeting Marissa

The tannoy announces, "Attention all hands. USS Thames II arriving. Docking Bay doors opening."

The Atlantic class Runabout glides into the hangar bay and lands directly on the target markings. Tractor beams lance forth from the emitter heads and deftly manœuvre it into a
parking space. A hatch at the aft end on the upper deck opens and two Human-appearing officers clamber down the ladder set into the hull side. One is a bearded, deeply tanned Lieutenant with dark hair wearing command red, and the other is a pale, freckled redhead Lieutenant (junior grade) in sciences blue.

Waiting for them are a dark haired female Lieutenant in command red and two black-furred felinoid Lieutenants (junior grade). One is a Caitian of average height and wears sciences blue, while the other is a Mirak, nearly 2.4 metres tall and wearing operations gold.

A young Human woman, a Lieutenant (jg) in command red with with a staff aiguillette, enters the docking bay. She steps forward and says, "Welcome to Starbase 21, Lieutenants Sloane and Clare. I'm Cynthia Adler, aide to the Commodore. Commodore Stone has asked me to see to all new transfers to Dyson Base, so I'll run you through your in-routine. This is Lieutenant Swann, your new XO, and Lieutenants Merawdr and Nivran," indicating the Human woman (who appears to be part Klingon), the Caitian and the Mirak in turn.

"Oh, the call was personal, but good news," Argent replies to Nivran, just before the arrival of the Thames is announced.

"A friend's sister was missing, presumed dead, but it turns out she is alive, as is the rest of her crew."

After the Thames docks and the new crewman disembarks and introduces himself, Argent replies.

"Pleased to meet you, Lieutenant Sloane. Call me Argent. I've not heard the name 'Zedrick' before. Is there a story behind it?"

Clearly Argent's name has to do with the silver-colored eyes he has.

OOps my bad
Forgot to select my new PC

"Thank you Lt Adler. Greetings to you Lt Sloane and Lt Clare. I am Lt Marissa Swann, your new XO for the Thames II. Welcome.

She had extended a hand to each, her handshake was firm, and her smile seemed genuine."I suppose you have a million questions. Lt Argent and Lt Nivran, have served on the Kitchissippi and finished the first mission.Their former commander is here on the Starbase and if there are questions not answered in her report" and she  hands a chip to Sloane," then I think it likely you could ask to meet with her.

If you'd come this way, Lt Adler will take you through your in-routine, though I'm sure we will be close by, once you have completed the drill"
She grinned mischievously, and winked at Clare.

"It's pretty strenuous, so we'll understand if you're not up for supper with us"

Both new officers thought it likely that she was joking

Lt. Adler says, "We'll just put your paperwork thorough, ant the Commodore will brief you at 0800 hours tomorrow, then you'll be on your way to Dyson Base. You'll have the run of the starbase for the evening. I'd assumed that it being 1830, you'd all eaten, but if you want to grab a bite after the in-routine, it should only take a half an hour to get done."

Turning to greet Argent, Zedrick replies, "One of my ancestors worked with Zephran and since then all the kids have had names starting with the letter zed. And call me Zedrick, Argent"

"Lt. Swann, looking forward to serving with all of you.  I have only briefly reviewed everyone's files.  And haven't had much of a chance to review past missions. I have read some on the Dyson Base but that is about it.   I'm sure I will have a million plus one questions." Zedrick said with a smile.

Responding then to Lt. Alder "Yes we had a quick bite while we were in bound.  Didn't know what was expected when we arrived." Turning to everyone and said "I'm sure we will be starving after the in-routine"

[OOC: It's beginning to sound like all we do is eat! We just had lunch! Must have dozed off during the time skip!]

Zedrick referring to his name starting with the 'letter' zed clearly gave a clue to his homeland, but Argent wondered how they made a distinction between the 'letter' zed and the syllable 'zed' which clearly Zedrick's name started with. But wouldn't they have just spelled his name 'Zrick'?

Although, now that he thought about it, it probably wasn't any different than the letter 'b' and the syllable 'be', or even the word 'bee'. Context was everything! Unfortunately, there was no corresponding phonetics in Caitian, which is why he'd always been a bit fascinated with the idiosyncrasies of languages. There were a few documented cases of alien languages that the universal translator couldn't quite handle, and he momentarily wondered how the programmers had dealt with the 'z-zed' issue.

"Well, I, for one, had a rather large and filling lunch, so I'm good till after the in-routine," Argent said to Zedrick. "You can always join us for a drink, Zedrick, or just nibble at something."

"See you when you're done."

[OOC: Nope, the Thames has just arrived. It's 1830, and the lunch was at 1200. The full briefing will be tomorrow.]

Jonathon Clare isn't saying much, seemingly content to let Zed Sloane do the talking. Adler leads them off to the admin section, leaving the rest to take a look at the Thames. One thing they notice is in the aft cargo hold of the Scout module—an off-road four-wheeled scout buggy [OOC: Same as the Argo vehicle in Star Trek Nemesis] crammed in to the space. Since Tony is a 'wheelman' in the parlance of Sigma Iotia II, Argent is sure he'll have some fun with the vehicle. The Scout module has six bunks and two small washrooms in addition to the cargo hold and a large area devoted to exploration—sensor stations and what-not. Argent recognises a cartography station, similar to one for stellar cartography but oriented around planetary mapping.

Lt. Adler runs Zed and Jon through their in-routine and they return about 30 minutes later. "So," she says, "I'm off duty as of now. What do you folks want for supper? We have a wide range of restaurants with cuisine from all over the Federation, as well as the local sectors. Anything your hearts—or stomachs—desire!"

In reply to Lt Zedrick Sloane (msg # 45):

Marissa grinned at the question about 'local cuisine'.

"Local, Lt? Not sure if there is an indigenous population but we'll see what we can do for you. There is an excellent spot that serves the finest Klingon cuisine, mixing it with Bajoran, and some Terran. Their Gagh, and Pipius claw is excellent, but the Rokeg Blood pie is the most memorable dish; though not for the faint of heart.

If vegetarian is your desire there is a married Vulcan couple who produce some amazing selections, however our feline crew members may find it less than appealing.

There is quite a considerable variety in the main Starbase Officers club, and likely in the interest of the wide gastronomic desires present in our crew; just might be the easier choice."

Once the choice is made, she will lead them, having spent considerable time here."So I'm guessing by your choice of using names vs ranks that you would prefer to run a relaxed ship, Zedrick?"

"Don't be so sure that feline's wouldn't like vegetarian cuisine," Argent replied. "I'm rather partial to catnip soup."

"Unfortunately, I never could get used to Klingon cuisine. I know everyone says it's an 'acquired' taste, but I think there is a gastronomic incompatibility with Caitians."

"If we are to all eat together, I suspect we should go to a more generic eatery."

After a brief discussion along these lines, the group eventually succumbs to hunger and make their decision. The food backs up Cynthia Adler's assessment of the excellent cuisine available and all are sated.

Afterward, Cynthia suggests a holographic performance of Hamlet 'in the original Klingon', she qualifies with a smirk.

In the morning, Commodore Stone holds the briefing, requesting that Marissa, Argent and Nivran also attend even though they have received earlier versions of the briefing.

"Good morning, Lieutenants. Some of you will already be aware of much of this information, but please bear with me. In the past month there have been several developments regarding the status of the Dyson Sphere. Lieutenant Merawdr was involved in some of these develpoments. We now know more about the creation and history of the Sphere."

Commodore Stone replies, "That is the point of doing this briefing, Lieutenant—to bring everyone up to speed on what we know. Thanks to Lieutenants Kurasa and Dul, along with their teams, of which Lieutenant Merawdr was an integral part, we have made contact with a race of androids or as they call themselves, replicants, called the Kapecki who were previously deemed a hostile force but who were apparently being externally controlled by a species called the Finori who are confirmed as a hostile force. You've all previously been briefed on the general aspects of the Dyson Sphere and a general précis is in your briefing materials."  Lieutenant Adler passes PADDs to everyone.

Stone continues, "This is the latest information we have. It duplicates some of the materials previously available. It includes general information on the Kapecki and the Finori, deck plans for the structures designated Gamma Stations and a review of the Klingon settlement known as BortaS City. Ambassador Worf is currently at Dyson Base meeting with Klingon emissary Klaang on that subject and a Klingon geneticist, Dr. Keh'lef will be stationed at Freeman's Island to oversee the scientific end of what is now being called the BortaS Project." He pauses to take a sip of ice water. "On the subject of the Kapecki, our current attitude is to regard them as neutrals rather than either allies or enemies. Back in old Earth's 20th century Cold War, they had a saying—"Trust but verify". We will be working hand-in-glove of some projects with them to explore certain areas of the Sphere such as the Museum of Flight and the Museum of Life. On the other hand are the Finori—we've had several encounters with them and they are most definitely hostile. Kapecki under their control attacked Freeman's Island. We've been informed that the Kapecki have recovered all their personnel from Finori control but as these 'replicants' are synthetic in nature, we don't know but that the Finori are capable of creating their own. If so, we need to find out and find a way to detect them. As the Kapecki replicants are biosynthetic androids, they read as living beings, do the Kapecki Chief Researcher R Daneel and Security Chief R Thera will be working with our Science personnel to create algorithms whereby out tricorders will be able to discriminate between them and true biological beings. We have five Kapecki bodies in stasis which were used by the Finori to infiltrate Starbase 21. Three ore completely fused and seeming useless, but two are merely deactivated and are being studied intensively by Starfleet at a classified facility. We do know that the Kapecki are immune to stun setting on phasers but that they are susceptible to lethal settings. Finori, on the other hand, are vulnerable to the same settings as any other humanoid. They are warm-blooded oviparous pseudo-reptilian humanoids at least as intelligent as Humans. The creator of the Sphere, Yaskoydray the Grandfather, is of the parent species to the Finori, but is immensely old and has the technology to create entire bubble universes. He has a proégé named Möbius, a Human from the late 22nd century named Edward R. Morbius who he 'ascended' to an energy-based lifeform like himself. The Finori active in the Sphere are a splinter group who call themselves the 'Sons of the Grandfather' and are apparently in revolt against the Grandfather to take over his domains, which include the Dyson Sphere. They are also active in a series of bubble universes known as the 'String of Pearls', of which we know nothing other than the name.

"The Dyson Sphere is an experimental laboratory created approximately a million years ago by sucking matter from another universe through tame artificial wormholes to forn the carbon-neutronium outer shell around the star we designate Dyson, a class G5V variable star, a yellow dwarf a tad smaller and slightly cooler than Sol. It is home to an ongoing series of 'experiments' many of which involve sapient humanoid life forms. These 'experiments' seem to be purely observational, at least on Yaskoydray's behalf. The Finori appear to be more intrusive and the recently explored Gamma Two Station was involved in psionics research. There appear to be many, many life forms living in the Sphere, some planted there by the Grandfather and some, like the Klingons, having made their way into the Sphere on their own more recently.

"Due to this recent contact with the Kapecki, the Federation has gained limited access to the Sphere's control computer—not enough control to interfere with the Sphere's base operations, but enough to request information and to access various areas."

Stone grimaces. "How do you define 'unobserved', Lieutenant? The Computer is an extremely advanced expert system, as close as makes no difference to a true AI. Any access to the Computer should be regarded as being observed. We have high-level computer experts doing what they can to circumvent the AI, but that's way above your level of expertise. These are experts who design high level systems, so its best if thy're left to their arcane studies. Lieutenant Dul has already tried what they refer to as a 'Kirk attack', and it seems not to be effective. Bear also in mind that if Commander Olivaw wishes, he can shut off our access entirely, as he seems to have a neural link to the computer. Best not to try antyhing cute with the Computer... for now, at least. We believe that the Computer's Avatar was 'playing dumb' and was fully aware of what Lt. Dul was attempting. It is our experts' opinion that the best way to proceed is to treat the Avatar as a person."
