Surf's up!

The three Lintillas approach Jon and one of them says, "You mentioned something about a surfing beach? We think the whole group of us could stand some rest and recreation. Shall we make a party of it? We have four hours until the reception with this Captain Picard."

Talja says, "Sounds like a plan! I have a file of replicator patterns for swimsuits." The three Lintillas begin chatting excitedly about swimsuits with her and head off to their assigned quarters to change.

Tony comes up to Jon and says, "I'll replicate a picnic—all the classics for a beach party. You can replicate the surfboards. They'e got a great selection of styles available in the computer! There's a great surfing beach up by Franklin's Point called Malibu."

Surf's up!

Half an hour later, the group arrives at the beach. The sight that greets them drives home the exquisite skill that went into the development of the Sphere. Fine sand like table sugar gleams next to an ocean of purest azure under a cornflower blur sky with drifting fluffy white clouds. The grass surrounding the beach is a soft mat of emerald green, dotted with tiny yellow flowers. To the northwest the tall crag of Franklin's Point is surrounded by gliding seabirds. To the west is another white sand beach, secluded from the one they're on. The surf is moderate, with metre-tall curls.

Tony arrives with a large hamper and a small hibachi slung over his shoulders. "Hi. guys, I brought the eats!" he calls out.

"Das ist gut!" replies Talja. She is accompanied by the Lintillas in three different coloured swimsuits. She herself wears a voluminous beach robe and carries a large beach umbrella, while the Lintillas carry a surfboard each, plus one for Talja.

Surf's up!

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 2):

Jon looks at the Lintillas in the bathing suits and approves. He looks at waves with a practiced eye and approves even more. The waves here are a bit smaller than back home in Tofino, but that's perfect for the beginners. And the water is definitely warmer. [OOC: Jon would have researched this beach already, and if there are any hazards to be aware of.]

"Who here has never surfed before?" Jon asks joyfully. "I can give a quick on-shore lesson for any beginners, and then we can hit the waves. Surfing's not hard, but it does take some practice and coordination."

"Tony!" Jon says, looking over to where Tony is setting up the hibachi. "Are you going to surf, or prep the food?"

Surf's up!

One of the Lintillas (Jon's not sure which one, since they're in swimsuits with their hair down) pipes up "Our clone mother, Rula Lintilla, surfed. We haven't done so ourselves, but we are imprinted with her memory engrams including what is called 'muscle memory'."

Talja says, "I've only surfed on the holodeck."

Tony says, "Th' only surfing we do back home is flivver surfing on the roofs of souped up cars. Never saw the point, myself. Too dangerous. Looks like water's a lot less painful than asphalt when ya hit it, though, so I'm up for it. Once I get the food set up."

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 4):

"OK, I'll go over the basics for Tony's sake," Jon says. "And Lintilla, maybe that will help ... awaken—is that the right word?—your memories!"

Jon takes 10 or 15 minutes to explain the basics of surfing, and does some on land demos. He explains how to paddle a board, sit and stand up, punch through waves, and catch a wave. He also goes over some of the safety aspects (always know where your board is, keep it on its leash, and never let your board get between you and the waves unless you want a black eye or a bloody nose).

By the time he's finished, Jon is so distracted by the sight of the Lintillas practising standing on the board while still on land that he completely forgets about the only true beginner, Tony. Since the Lintillas are doing a great job (after all, they have sort of done this before) he says "You're all doing great! Let's get off the beach and into the water!"

Surf's up!

[OOC: Zed has been invited to the beach party, so if you're so inclined, he's can be there.]

After the quick lesson,Tony unpacks the food. He has a variety of sausages and hot dogs, buns and toppings like chilled sauerkraut, hot chili, pickles, cheese and peppers, along with the usual condiments. He sets some of the hot dogs to grill on the hibachi and sets out a number of bottles of beer and soft drinks on ice. "I figured, might as well do it up right."

Talja snags a bottle of German lager and takes a sip. "Danke, Tonio," she says and slips off her beach robe. She's wearing a modest one piece black bathing suit, but the effect is stunning. Talja usually wears her uniforms quite loose, in fact a size larger than she needs, so that she normally looks a little dumpy. Now, in swimwear, she shows off a tightly muscled athlete's body, her pale skin setting off her dark hair. Her sharply sculpted muscles flow lithely under her skin as she picks up a short surfboard and runs toward the water.

Surf's up!

In reply to Relic GM (msg # 8):

Jon grabs his surfboard and, following Talja and the Lintillas, dashes into the water. "See ya in the water, Tony!" he calls, not minding at all that he is leaving Tony behind. Jon is feeling a little self-conscious, being surrounded by four beautiful, athletic ladies (he's by no means unattractive, but is a bit on the scrawny side). He is, however, an excellent surfer and hopes his skills in the waves will impress.

Jon paddles his board quickly towards the breaking waves.  About halfway there he looks back to see how the others are doing.

Surf's up!

Jon, the Lintillas and Talja head for the water, while Tony tends to the food. Once everything is cooking, Tony decides to take a quick dip before serving up the picnic. He grabs a short board and, under the watchful eyes of one of the Lintillas and Talja, paddles out to catch a wave. When he does, he is able to get to his feet on the board and seems to be doing well... at first. This particular wave is higher than most, and Tony loses his balance.

"Watch out, Tony!" calls out Talja as he suddenly goes head over heels. He hits the water hard and his board strikes him in the shoulder, driving him under. He surfaces, face down and unmoving.

"Mein Gott!" yells Talja and dives into the water. She dives under him and comes up supporting his body so his face is out of the water. He's dead weight in her arms, but she manages to get him to shore. The Lintilla helps Talja move Tony out of the waves onto dry sand. Tony is turning cyanotic, so Talja begins mouth-to-mouth respiration. After several tense moments, during which she manages to gasp out to Lintilla, "Medkit! Tri-ox compound!" Lintilla administers a hypospray and Tony resumes breathing on his own. Talja turns him on his side when he starts to retch and he vomits up salt water and the remains of a hot dog he'd been nibbling on while cooking. Talja grabs her combadge and orders an immediate beamout. She and Tony disappear in a sparkle as Jon and the other two Lintillas arrive, leaving Jon alone with the three redheads.

In reply to Lt (jg) Talja Groen (msg # 10):

Jon tries to assume a not-too-worried expression as he turns to the Lintillas and says "I think he'll be OK. I've seen surfing accidents like that before. After some rest and time breathing pure oxygen, he'll bounce right back. Thank goodness Talja was right there to help him out. This is why you alway surf with at least 1 buddy! I hope you're not too put off by this incident. Maybe we should tend to the food before it burns."

Jon realizes he's babbling and takes a deep breath to calm himself down. He starts poking at the hibachi with some tongs, but his hands are shaking and all he does knock a hot dog off the grill onto the sand.

"Shit!" Jon exclaims angrily, and then he sits down heavily on the sand, wringing his hands, his back to the Lintillas.

As Jon sits there, he feels warmth on his back, then a pair on arms embraces him. A soft voice whispers in his ear, "It's not your fault, you know. You did everything you could have done. It was an accident, plain and simple. Fortunately, Talja was there—she's very good. I'm sure he'll be fine. He's almost as tough as he thinks he is. Tell you what; why don't we go and see him, as soon as the medics have had time to treat him. If we walk back now, that'll give them time."

She picks up a sausage from the grill. "Here, have something to eat."

One of the Lintillas says, "Tony took a spill and inhaled some water. Talja took him to see the doctor just in case. Jon's a little bummed out—he feels responsible. Anyway, we've lots of food. Tony laid on a real beach party feast."

Another Lintilla is tending the hibachi. "What can I get you. We've got hot dogs, which I'm assured contain no dog whatsoever, some spicy Eyetalian sausage, potato salad, beer and soda pop. This one's kind of weird—it's called Root Beer, but there are no roots in it and it's not beer. Sweet and kind of fizzy."

Dahlakino has followed Zed and asks, "Hey,there! Room for one more?"

Jon looks up and notices that a small party seems to have sprung up around him while he's been brooding. He's also holding a hot dog that he doesn't remember picking up. He smiles wanly at Lt. Sloan.

"Oh, hi Lieutenant," he says. "Tony had an accident and Talja beamed with him over to sick bay. I was going to walk over and see how he is doing. Would anybody like to come with me?"

"I hope I won't be long," Jon adds. "I can do another round of lessons when I get back." He turns and starts to walk towards the base, taking a bite of his hot dog as he goes. He is trying to act nonchalant, but is evidently still rattled and forgets to check if anybody is coming with him.

Luckily, Talja was watching him and got there in moments and pulled him out right away," says Lintilla. "She'd been surfing before in your holodeck—what we call an informational illusion back home. That gave her experience with the safety protocols engaged so she knew just what to do. Very useful device." She kneels and begins repacking the medkit. "Sorry, I kind of spilled it looking for the correct hypospray."

Standing up, she stretches. "So, you guys want to go for a swim?"

Taking the turbolift to the second level, Jon and the two Lintillas arrive at Tony's quarters. A Lintilla presses the call bell. There is no answer, but a feminine giggle can be heard through the door. Lintilla touches the door open panel, and the door swishes open—Tony has not engaged the door lock.

The lights are on, revealing Tony sitting on the sofa and Talja posing in front of the mirror. She is in uniform, but not her usual slightly-too-loose style. She's replicated a tailored one which hugs her curves revealing her athletic figure. Tony looks up and says, "Oh, hi, guys," while Talja turns a deep red.

Tony stands, obviously still in some discomfort from the cracked rib, and says, "I was just tryin' to convince Talja that she's not such an ugly duckling and to try to 'dress to impress'."

Talja stammers, "Wh-what do you think? Should I do this?" as she turns bright red.

The Lintillas gush, "Wow, you look amazing! What do you think, Jon? Should she stick with this look?"

Talja says, "All the time my sister was missing in action I felt so depressed, but now it's like a load has been lifted from my soul and Tony..."

"Yeah, well, that's neither here nor there," Tony mutters, blushing to match Talja. "So, youse guys decided to leave the party? I'm touched, but I'm like, y'know copacetic," he continues putting on his usual tough-guy persona.

"Well, we could, but we'd only have 15 minutes before we'd need to start back to get ready," replies one Lintilla and the other continues, "About all we could do is get Zed, Dahlakino and Lintilla."

Meanwhile, the remaining Lintilla turns Zed and Dahlakino and says, "We've got about 45 minutes before we need to start back—an hour if we jog all the way back or an hour and a half if we use your teleporter. The Commander issued me a communicator badge in case I need it." She proudly displays a standard Starfleet issue combadge.

"That is, of course," begins one Lintilla to Jon. "Unless we use your teleportation device," finishes the other Lintilla.

Talja seems to have deduced from context, or perhaps body language that they're communicating with their clone-sister and says wistfully, "It must be so convenient to be telepathic, ja?"

The two Lintillas say in unison, "Oh, it's not telepathy... not exactly! It's more like we just... um... know..." They trail off, still in perfect unison.

Back at the beach, Dahlakino looks at the third Lintilla and says, "Interesting—I felt a ripple in the force between you and your sisters just then!"

[OOC: Gee, the 1900th post! 2000 here we come!]

The next hour passes pleasantly, and with fifteen minutes before the team has to begin preparing for the reception, they form up and collect their equipment. Those who wish to jog back with Zed set off for the run to the installation, while those who are less strnuously oriented beam back and thus beat Zed and his cohort back.

Zed notices the maintenance crew, supplemented by Enterprise personnel, setting up for the formal reception. They've already set up a stage and a large holographic projection unit and are in the process of setting up a large seating area on the grass. Several runabouts have been landed on the adjacent clear areas.

"It looks like they're doing this up right," says Dahlakino, keeping pace with Zed. "I wonder what the big announcement is?"
