On some level, perhaps, Alice has always known that there was something strange about the world. Ever since she was a little girl, she'd freak out if she had to go out into her grandfather's estate at night, before it became her father's estate. Her sister laughed and teased her, but it didn't change the fact that the shadows were filled with monsters.

It was the day of her sister's wedding that really solidified it for her, though. Throughout the ceremony she snapped pictures with the new SLR camera her father had given her, one that used real film instead of digital images after she expressed mild interest. It seemed a novelty, even to her, but there was a certain amount of fun and control in taking the film home and rigging up her own development room, and she had to admit the images were incredibly crisp. When she developed the images in her little lab, though, a chill ran down her spine as she found the spectral figure stalking her sister, his face a ruin, his blazer enough to identify him by - Hermine's ex from boarding school, who had died in a car crash.

Her father had called it a photographic error, a trick of the light, and refused to even contemplate the questions it raised. Hermine had accused her of faking it and refused to speak to her for weeks. Her mother had tolerated it at first, professing spiritualist beliefs, but she never did anything with the idea, it didn't seem to bug her the same way it did Alice.

Honestly, in time, it didn't bug her, either. She got into photography, but it was hard to replicate the results again, and the notion faded - until one evening, years from then, when the sting of revelation hit her once again.
