Sorry, I overlooked the Fate Point which Luca spent. Consider that FP to be refunded.

Does Raven's gloom sight allow attacking without penalty with my two-hander?

is there such a a thing as held action - so Raven can wait for the spider to come close then whacking it?

You won't get complaints from me on that front.  I'm in a similar boat.

In reply to Morty (msg # 130):

Yes, I'll go for that. So long as there is even the slightest light source, Gloom Sight will work well.

Sure, Raven can use his action phase at any point in the round after his initiative comes up, even during another character's action phase.

I'm just glad that you are all still with us.

Re: Raven
Give Luca a chance to shine. It was her skill roll which got things this far. If she doesn't respond by this time tomorrow, go ahead. Heavens knows that I can take longer than that to post.

In the meantime, we still have that random encounter to establish for the climax of the Act. If I use the tables as intended, I will need five more D100 roles to determine who is there.

Re: Raven
On second thought, NPCs are boring. Monsters are more interesting. Give me a D20 roll instead. I am using the Midnight Realm Encounter Matrix. "Humanoids" does appear on the monster chart, so it is still possible to run into a friendly or unfriend NPC.

Re: Raven
You guys could use some extra hit points for the upcoming fight if thinks don't go perfectly. In a longer-format game, you probably would have had an extra chance or two to earn some easy XP before this encounter. I have decided to award every active player another 2000 experience for solving the stone animal puzzle. It's overly generous but not by much.

That should be enough to advance Chen Zen, Herleifr, Luca, and Raven to 2nd level. You may go ahead and update your character sheets if you like.

Here is the process for leveling at this stage in the game.
1. Hit Points = Constitution x level
2. Power Attributes increase all on their own. Pro Combat characters gain +4 points to their POW. Semi-Pro Magic characters gain +3 points. Power Saves also shift by the same amount.
3. Power Points (or Ki Points for martial artist characters) gain a bonus equal to the character's NEW Power attribute. So, a character with a Power attribute of 10 would gain +10 Power Points.
4. Pro Combat characters gain +1 to their Combat Value every new level
5. Semi-Pro Combat characters gain +1 CV every even numbered level, beginning at 2nd
6. Players may invest their Fate Points for the purpose of increasing attributes permanently. They are no longer limited by their race's Gen Max statistics for attributes, but they are still limited by the cap for mortals of 20 in most attributes or 100 in Power. You may ask me to look up how many points are needed to boost your particular attribute to the next tier.
7. If the Power Attribute reaches 20, that character becomes capable of casting 2nd Order Spells. If the Power Attribute reaches 30, that character can cast 3rd Order spells. The character must still find and learn these spells before casting them of course.

Does anyone have questions? I'll be working a double shift tomorrow, so I won't be back until at least Thursday evening.

Re: Raven
Thanks, GM.

Just to be clear, we're waiting for Raven to make a stealth check, right?  I've been hit by the perfect storm of a vacation and a terrible toothache (getting it pulled/root canaled today at 2:30) and haven't been particularly aggressive this week.

Oh, and GM... I always hate players whining about this when I'm running, but could you open up Luca's character sheet space so I can dump her sheet there?  Having it float in this thread is kind of inconvenient.  Thanks in advance.

I thought that Chen was making Stealth check, but if Raven is doing it instead, I'm okay with that. I will go look into Luca's character sheet right now.

Chen's character sheet has been updated for 2nd level. Also, the sneaking attempt was successful. We are now in combat again.

Re: Chen
My sheet is currently locked to user edits.  You can update her to level 2, if you want, or I will if you unlock it ;)

Right now, I'm only sort of posting because I'm kind of on a lot of meds.  Next week promises to be better, though.

And Luca is now updated to level 2.  I spent 2 karma on raising Power, so she's on the lookout for third order spells.

The guys (and Luca) picked a fight with an ice giant. You came back just in time to roll an attack. Also, the PCs reached second experience level.

Here's what I have so far, any suggestions?

Name: Timaria Lightfoot
Prime Goal: To explore the world, and have fun doing it.
Racial Template: Akir
Profession Templates: Rogue, Ranger
Freak Templates: none (What are these?)
Experience Level: 5

Strength 12    3pts
Speed 14   10pts
Dexterity 16  21pts
Constitution 12   3pts
Willpower 14   10pts
Intelligence 14   10pts
Presence 10  0pts
Perception 15  15pts
Power 10  10pts
Total cost: 82 pts

Attitude 13 (Cocky)
Confidence 5 (Good at her skills, and knows it!)
Discipline (9 Veteran thief.)
Fear 10
Greed 13 (Gem hoarder)
Harmony 10
Luck 10
Sanity 10
Total points gained: 80

Code: 14 Thief with a heart of gold!
Steal only from those who have too much. There's enough evil in this world, don't perpetuate it by hurting the little guy.
You're a thief not an assassin, avoid killing while stealing, and never unless necessary. Animals and monsters are okay.
Help out the poor, you might need their help someday.
Beggars need help, and they see everything. Cultivate their trust and friendship.
If someone is on a job with you, they're your mate. Even after the job is over you don't rat on them about the job. If you're caught, stay silent. If your mate stays silent, take care of their family while they're away. They'll do the same for you.
When a fellow thief wrongs you, you must first offer them a way to make amends. If they refuse, take them for all their worth.
Never betray a mate! You have to be able to trust each other, if not then you all end up caught.
Never steal from your friends. You'll get caught, and lose the hardest thing in the world to replace, trust.
Never work with the law to take out a thief, we police our own. If the law needs help finding an assassin, murderer, etc, that's okay.

Also how important are Presence and Speed to Rogue/Rangers?

Timaria
These are some excellent karma attributes.

By my count, you have 194 karma points with which to build your character. You spent only 82 on your attributes. You can go afford to go a lot higher, but I think you realized this when you posed the questions.

Freak Templates None is correct. Freaks are extra character classes which stack on top of other templates, like becoming a vampire or a mutant for two examples. Basically, characters take on freak templates to get superpowers. I'm making it sound perhaps cheesy, but it will be fun; I promise. We will all pick out some freak templates before Act III begins, but don't worry about them for now, please.

Important Attributes As a Ranger-Rogue, your most important attribute will clearly be Dexterity. This determines your combat roll bonus, but it is also the attribute which powers your Acrobatics skill. After that, I would think that Perception is next most important because many of your skills are powered by Perception.

Speed versus Presence: Speed determines how quickly you may act when a fight breaks out. It's your initiative stat. Speed has nothing to do with sprinting pace -- that is a different stat called Combat Movement Rate. Presence works a lot like Charisma in old D&D; it's a combination of appearance, dominating voice, and social gravitas. Presence is useful in making a non-violent combat action called a Presence Attack. Also, Presence Saving Throws are useful against Enchantment Magic. Picking one or the other is a tactical decision. Is Tim the type of warrior who attacks from the shadows and then vanishes before taking damage? If so, buff Speed. Is she the type who stands in front of the group and stares down her enemies? If so, buff Presence.

Since Tim is getting promoted to 5th level, you are no longer locked into the Gen Max attributes of the Akir. Those Gen Max stats are really for 1st level characters. Your only attribute limitations now are 20 for being mortal (or 100 in the specific case of the Power Attribute). If you want to go higher that the Gen Max, it's an option.

Other ways to spend Karma Points: There are a few special powers which may be purchased in addition to those she got from her templates. Resistance to Disease (3 points) and Resistance to Poisons & Venoms (5 points) are bargain priced protection against common dangers. Boosting Luck (5 points per increase) will allow you to use more of your left over character building points during gameplay to save yourself from bad die rolls. Luck 1 means a character may spend 1 Fate Point per adventure to modify one die roll. Luck 2 which Akir already have means 2 Fate Points may be spent per adventure. The higher the luck, the more risks a character can afford to take. Lastly, you may boost your Perception in one particular sense by buying special powers like Bloodhound or Eagle Eyes. Any of the five senses may be augmented in this way. The bonuses from these are applied to Perception Saves whenever relevant. These sort of special powers may be purchased five times for a +5 bonus (which is huge) when utilizing that particular skill.
