Chen Zen, holding a lantern and his 'walking stick' in opposite hands, sees the spider behind them. Instinctively, the stick is swung up an upside down fashion, bringing the bottom up towards the spiders head.

11:49, Today: Chen Zen rolled 24 using 1d20+7.  combat!!!!!!
11:50, Today: Chen Zen rolled 24 using 2d10+6.  dmg.(used unarmed damage since I didn't see anything listed for the staff.)

Luca channels a bunch of magical energy into her free hand and uses it to toss a ball of crackling plasma at one of the spiders.  Unfortunately, it misses handily.

OOC: Looks like an 8 would only hit a DV of -1, which I'm going to assume isn't these guys.  Do you declare how much power you put into the spell before or after the to-hit?  It'd be 20PP if it's after (she has her power battery).

16:48, Today: Luca rolled 8 using 1d20+5.  Plasma Bolt to hit.

OOC I'm going to spend another Karma point for a max roll on this attack.

Herleifr strides over to the closest spider-thing. He swings and hits it with a powerful blow.

OOC Total Attack is 25. If the spider-thing's DV is 5 or less, this is a crit. He failed his Deathblow check that I rolled in case it is a crit. Damage is 32 on a normal hit, 64 on a crit.

Close enough, Chen rolls 1d8 representing his staff +2d10 for his strength together. 24 is within that range, so we'll go with that for now. The critters have a Defense Value of 8, so the attack result is 24-8 or 16. That's a normal hit. They have an armor value of 4, so the damage inflicted is 24-4 = 20.

With speed and strength that seems superhuman, the zen master's sudden attack catches the huge arachnoid in a painful beating. Chen definitely heard something crack when staff connected with the beast's chitin-plated noggin.

If we were playing around a table, I would request that it be declared how many power points are invested before the attack roll is made. Since we are doing this RPOL style, you don't have to do that. In fact with this being a first encounter and under the circumstances, disregard the attack roll this time. I don't see how she would miss such a large monster when it is within biting range of her companions.

White fire erupts from Luca's hand as forgotten sorcery illuminates the cave. The bolt of plasma seers the monster behind her painfully.

It's a normal hit, but you are correct that the max damage does apply due to using a Fate Point in this way.
The powerful Akir lands an incredible blow with his sword which echoes through the cave. The spider stumbles under the force which struck it.

The front spider wavers between Raven and Herleifr as its target. It settles on the Raven and lunges at the smaller figure.
At this point, Raven, you may opt for going full defense this round. This will add a d20 roll to your Defense Value. Otherwise, you may take the bite and attempt to finish off the monster with your own attack.

The rear spider leaps at the Khazak, Mordred. It seems that they prefer meals who do not hit them. The Soulforger gets the same option as Raven.

Both of the Deathweaver spiders look like they have had the better half of the fight beaten out of them already.

"Eh. Give flesh to cut bone." The vyshe purposefully baits the spider to be able to land a monumental blow with his otherworldly sword. This isn't really as bad as it sounds, given he's quite resistant to poison, and regenerates...

06:55, Today: Raven rolled 29 using 2d8+3d10.  damage / base + DC 7+1 for ftr.
06:54, Today: Raven rolled 18 using 1d20.  attack roll. That'd be 19 total.

Luca tries to stay away from the spiders and not hit her allies with it.

OOC: My earlier statement was in error - it would have been 20PP if declaring before the roll.  Since it hit, that is obviously not wasted.  She'll throw another bolt at the closest spider if she feels like she can do it without hitting her allies.  Let's say... 10 PP this time.

Raven vs a Death Weaver
In reply to Raven (msg # 11):

Raven bravely trades blows with the spider and it's huge dangerous maw. The spider scores an excellent blow (a critical hit), powerful enough to tear the Vyshe in twine.

A critical hit results in Raven taking the maximum possible damage from the spider's dice. He must also roll a Constitution Save to avoid the effects of devastation (-10 to all subsequent combat rolls). Even after accounting for Raven's armor, he'll take 19 points of damage from this attack. The paralyzing venom is not a factor, but the raw hit point damage exceeds Raven's pool of hit points. He'll drop to unconsciousness and rely on his teammates to revive him somehow. If he burns a fate point now, he reduces that damage to the minimum possible from the spider's damage dice which would be 3 points, an amount which his armor would soak entirely.

At the same time, the warrior's Vindicator Blade slides through the hard carapace as if it were nothing. A regular hit, the full 29 points of damage are taken. The spider collapses down under its own weight and succumbs to its two mighty wounds from Herliefr and Raven. In a death rattle, it vibrates and clatters on the cave floor.

Soulforger vs the other Death Weaver
The short Khazak proves more nimble than he appears. With a quick duck and spin, he avoids the snapping jaw of the spider behind him. He landed just outside of the monster's reach, but also just outside the reach of his own daggers.

I went ahead and rolled a d20 for a defensive roll.

Round 2
The spider aft of the party continued its assault after the Khazak managed to dodge its first attack.

Chen Zen attempted to follow up his first hit with finishing blow. Unfamiliar as he was with spider-anatomy, he misjudged where to place his staff exactly. The tip of the weapon merely nicked the side of the spider's glossy head carapace and glanced off of it.

Luca followed up next with a second blistering flame tongue of hot plasma. The burn was not as intense nor as long as her first attack, however, and the spider's carapace soaked much off the heat. The spider was hurt by the blast.

The spider, now very badly hurt and smoldering inside its armor plates, begins backing away from the party.

Round 2
Despite being confident that his regeneration and poison resistance would save his hide, the vzshe warrior nevertheless calls upon the power of his blood. He moves just slightly as the monster's formidable bite descends upon him, leaving a few shallow gashes on his armour. The Vindicator blade makes short work of the spider, and Raven turns to the rear of the party, cigarette still hanging limply from the corner of his mouth.

"I hate spiders." With a mutter, he charges the remaining spider, the long ornate sword in his hands catching stray torchlight and making little rainbows on the walls as the vyshe charges past to impale the huge thing.

spent 1 fate to avoid spider, now have 7 fate points. Attacking spider #2.

Herleifr scans his surroundings. He finds no new threats beyond the webs at the height of his ankles. Now that he knows about them, he can see webbing almost everywhere.

In the rear of the formation, Chen Zen sprints after the retreating beast. With a new quick blow, his staff knocks the monster's off it's thorax. Raven arrives half a second later and slices the target with his blade, nearly bisecting the body.

Round 2
Luca looks at the felled beasts for a moment.  "I wonder what they feed upon down here to grow so large?  Or, mayhap, they have little to feed upon and that is why they threw themselves against an armed group with such abandon."

OOC: Luca has Exotics, Lore(Natural), and Poisons/Venoms.  Would any of those come in handy here?

Round 2
Venoms, Poisons, and Radiations is a skill which will only be useful here if Luca decides to identify and-or extract the spider's venom. If she doesn't, the Khazak will. The Exotics skill would only be useful for identifying the material of Raven's sword. The skill of Lore: Nature would be the most helpful here. With a successful skill roll, Luca would be able to probably identify the species of these spiders and speculate better about their hunting practices. Basically, with a Lore skill roll, Luca would know everything on the monster's character on the Map H illustration. To make a skill roll, simply roll the corresponding the attribute's saving throw. For all of these skills, it would be an Intelligence Save (and high rolls are good). With skills mods, your target number drops below the standard target number for the attribute save.

Experience
Although the party emerged victorious quickly, this encounter was slightly tougher than what would have been a fair fight for this party. Each Spider had 4 Kill Factors. That means one spider is a fair fight for a single 4th level character or four 1st level characters. The mated pair of Deathweavers together had 8 Kill Factors compared to the party's 5 XP levels. This doesn't qualify for the Difficult XP multiplier, but it's an accomplishment for which the PCs may feel proud. Each PC gets 8000 XP for the encounter. I am awarding Herleifr an extra +1000 XP bonus for securing the entire group's gear. You reach second level when you acquire 10,000 XP.

Afterbattle
Luca was able to successfully extract the venom from the Deathspinners. Unfortunately, no one seems to have a suitable container handy. She has the option of pouring out her ink from her writing kit and using the bottle for the venom.

From her extensive study of zoology, she knows that Deathspinners are ambush predators. They rarely pick fights unless they are confident in winning. Not being all that bright, they are usually confident. Although typically lone hunters, they can be encountered as mating pairs. Deathspinners are found throughout most of the world, particularly in warm climates and in the Midnight Realm. They are the bane of shepards and herders because they are large enough and mean enough to hunt and devour cattle (and their humans). Deathspinners feed like most smaller spiders by paralyzing and then liquifying their victims slowly. The Nazar Ethan corpses at the bottom of the stairs were probably earlier victims of these monsters based upon how their flesh was removed from armor. If this pair had mated recently, there may be a clutch of spider eggs somewhere in the vicinity.
