Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Busy as hell at work past few days. A good thing, except it takes away from stuff I like to do, like, for instance, RPol.

Try to get something up tonight.

Cheers.

I mentioned some weeks past that periodically I can't get onto Rpol - had that problem last night. Sorry for the delay - definitely will post tonight, and will be around this weekend, so can post as supply and demand permit.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

I had the very same problem yesterday late afternoon.

By the way, in RL I just landed a fulltime job, which starts on Tuesday.

I've been consulting for nearly 2 years while seeking a gig, so it's with a bit of relief that I report that this may cause delays in my RPOling that I've not had through it all.

Have to say that this is the best bad news I've had in a long time!

LOL! Well put. Good luck with the new gig - hope it takes you to retirement.

No worries on the post rate - I'm slow enough most days that you'll never have to worry about catching up.

I experienced the rpol lockout yesterday afternoon.  Good to know you've managed to secure yourself the full time position Bruno, I hope it works out as good for you as you hope yourself.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

In my game rules, I'm pretty clear: Dex + Adj.

That said, when I've got 27 giant rats, I'm sure as hell not gonna role individually, and in that instance, nor should you.

As far as evening the odds...that has a way of balancing if the game is appropriate to the party level. I think you've all seen that it is, thus far...even if y'all are technically all 1st level.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Oh?!!  There's a rules thread.  I might read it sometime.

I find players rarely complain about the rules when they are having fun and/or winning.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

I think even when an adventure is hard, players won't complain as long as it's worth playing. Hedge does a nice job in his game - doesn't slack on the fun, but hasn't made it easy on us either. We've had a number of companions die, even one turned to stone. Fought everything from drow to duergar to vampires prior to your (Damara's) arrival.

I've always said, 'Kill my character, I'll just roll up a new one!'

I stick by that premise - half the fun is creating a new character to obsess over (though, truthfully, Ned is my favorite character, likely of all time - heady stuff for a 6th level fighter - I'd be bummed if he got killed).

Yeah, I know where you are coming from.  I've got 3 I've been playing for just over 9 years now, but if they die, they're still just as much alive as they ever were.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

I appreciate this exchange. I agree that as a player my job is to trust the GM to be fair and give us the platform upon which to create a story. Implicit in my thinking though, and different from yours, Seer, is that I invest a lot of energy in character creation, i.e., background creation, evolving his personality, etc., which means that I'm rather unambivalent about losing a character. Granted, if the death is appropriate and bring the character's story to a good end that's less problematic, but, yeah, still not very similar in attitude.

(This isn't meant as a warning or complaint, just wanted to offer an opinion!)

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

You make a fair point Bruno, there is a huge time investment in a character, though doesn't it pale in comparison to the investment in the game by the DM?  I was making the assumption that any death would be a 'fair death' as it were.  By that I mean within the rules of the game without unknown game mechanics causing the death.  If you poke a red dragon with a stick, you've got to expect to get burnt.  To have a safety net of the DM wanting to keep the player and the game going breeds sloppy unintelligent posting that relies on the DM fudging rolls.  Look at me I'm preaching to the already converted.  *wobbles off his soap box*

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Yup, we're saying the same thing, I think. I don't mean to underplay the investment of the GM. After all, as one who thinks the purpose of the story is player evolution the contribution of the GM through both world and plot creation is enormous.

To further blather... The death of a character could be a random event in a game, but to be honest, that's not a game I want to waste my time playing. (Honestly, it's a bit too much like RL and I think of these as an escape from that!) That's not to say that a foolish or risky action on my part IC shouldn't lead to damage or death. It's also not to say that a death that jibes with the plot or character I'm developing would be a bad thing. (Yes, I want a game 'real-ish'.)

So, in short, if a game is one in which my character could die from pneumonia, I'm not interested. If it's one in which my elderly character dies from pneumonia after a long in-game life (that maybe resulted in wounds, lost limbs, etc. as a result of a hard-lived life) and then I take up that character's heir, then that something different.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Bruno would've liked Wine Guy's game, I think.

This is great conversation. Wish I was hanging with you guys with some Jack Daniels and some baby back ribs.

As for in game occurrences that seem random and unfair, many, many moons ago I was playing a fighter named Shathur duBois. Got the name by opening the fellowship of the ring to a random page - apparently Shathur was one of the mountains that bracketed Caradhras (the other was zirak-zigil or some such).

Anyway, I was playing Shathur in a series of warrens, when my party came upon a lone kobold at the heart of the mountain. With a grin I charged forward. Calmly, the kobold pulled out a wand of fireballs and blew me away.

I was a pre-teen at the time (maybe 11 or 12). It was a good lesson about investing emotional capital in a character.

That said, the reason I invited all of this crew to play in this game is because you all do such a good job of creating 'real' people as characters.

I hope, as DM, that I'm living up to my end of the bargain!

If that were the case I doubt it would be very long before someone said "I've got this module...." and dice were rolling and characters were being developed.  We all know that is a very quick way for the afternoon to become evening.  :o)

And that' would be a problem? (Though admittedly I'm not a big fan of Jack [sorry, I love bourbon, but I prefer even Even Williams] you're The Seer, so I'm 'certain' I may be wrong about this.)

But, yeah! 🍻

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

I've sipped different types of whiskey in my time. I don't dislike any of them (although Jim Beam comes pretty close - something about the after taste doesn't sit well).

I started drinking Jack in the Navy. Was night shift supervisor whenever we returned to our home port. How I kept my guys motivated was 'the sooner you sorry asses get finished, the sooner I buy the first round at the bar...'

Sure enough, we'd be finished by 9pm - 2100 for the traditionalists (though I admit I have to use my fingers and toes when counting military time)...used to piss day shift off to know end, when they'd have to work up to 10 hours, and we'd be out in 6 or 7. Still brings a smile to my face...every now and again I'll facebook one of those guys and rub it in a little...

Heh!
