Uthecar Hornskin II:
The Seer:
ooc: it's called enchanted weapon, a 4th level spell I believe. Gygax already had that figured, the clever bastard.

Yes you are right, but it is a magic user spell and there isn’t an equivalent in the priest spell arsenal.  Given it is a 4th level spell a magic user would need to be 8th or 9th level to cast it.  (Not near my books). By that level I would consider a +1 blade bonus as a weak waste of time when compared to other spells of that level.  Besides most characters would be sporting a +2 weapon or maybe even +3 if they got lucky by then wouldn’t they.  An example of an inappropriate level for the spell in my opinion.  If it was a lower level it might be used as it would have a far greater value to characters.

I hear what you're saying. Quite honestly, I don't think I've ever played in a game as difficult as one DM'd by Gygax. I think some of the spells for all spell casting classes are too high a level or not high enough. Just my take. Then again, in my 3.5 game, it seems like all the spells are terribly overpowered, and the monsters mostly cream puffs.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

I always remember that the magic users had to stay clear of the melee and had very few spells of any really significant until 5th level where they had a fireball, but it had to be used at the right time.  Then on to 9th where their spell started becoming really formidable.

Always felt that they should have a bit more flexibility on the spell selection based on the fact that they have a limited number of spells without a bonus for high intelligence.

Since most magic users have a high intelligence, Always thought that there should be some sort of roll aginst that to determine if they happen to have the right spell memorized for the occasion  (Kind of a Macgyver factor so to speak)

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

The Seer:
Metagaming aside, I think a conversation on tactics and a review would be normal, given the circumstances. Perhaps a discussion on the distribution of labor - certainly seems like Weasel is an impetuous wild card - his actions almost undid you guys.

I would also suggest that you look at the creatures fought thus far, their abilities and strengths, and come up with a game plan to defend against their attacks. You pretty much know what a ghoul can do, and ghasts as well, by default. Shadows might still be obscure, but at least you have a sense of what one is.

Anything that might prepare you for other encounters would be a good planning and strategy session, and definitely in the realm of what y'all would talk about. I mean, you're all stuck in this room for 2 days - you have to talk about something, right?  LOL!

As first level character, I think that there should be a certain green value to them.  There is a sailor saying that "a calm sea never made a seasoned sailor"  the character would need to learn how to fight and defend against such creatures.

To be honest, I think we pulled off the greenness of the characters.  Some by just blind luck.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

I think you guys performed exactly as I expected. A few scrapes on your side, but ultimately victory.

Keep in mind, getting wounded to the point of unconsciousness is not a small thing in real terms. Two important characters down, with a third paralyzed is a very big deal. So survival is a victory of sorts, and now you find some plunder that may be useful. I'd say it was a hard earned victory...

To the overall point, though, I think each character would know enough to realize they are green, and that this 'adventure' is about more than getting loot. Thus the opportunity to talk while Weasel recovers.

Of course, if you don't wish to talk, that's fine. It'll be a quiet two days for Weasel...during which I can regale you tales of a former player in another adventure who found a bag of holding and didn't record it on his character sheet. When he mentioned that he had one a year later, I said, "What bag of holding." This was after I'd warned him several times to take better care of his charater sheet.

Fair warning...keep good notes.

What...you think I do?

LOL!!!

Chaos theory. That said, you're in a dungeon. The rest, as they say, is academic.

I'm back - just drove 9 hours from south FL to central South Carolina, so a bit burnt out.  Will post in the coming days, once I see what disasters await me at work...

Thanks for the patience.

A 9 hour drive sounds hideous.  I’ve done the 8 hour drive between my old city and new city 4 times now, and flying between the two cities from here on in.  I don’t envy you at all, rest up.

Ugh...9 hours is a haul.
It's 9.5 from Wilmy to Orlando. We normally break it up on the way down, but do it all on the way back.

Rest up, dude.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Okay gang - time to move on.

Please read the final few posts in the "Day 2: Back into Quesqueton" thread to bring you up to speed (if you haven't already).

A new thread: Day 4: Combing Quesqueton was started today to move the adventure along.

Along with that, check the rewards thread for new experience points for each of you. As an aside on this issue, I am not tracking your personal XP - I tend to think that's your responsibility. Please make sure you're accurately reflecting the rewards I'm giving - I am fairly liberal when it comes to passing out XP, so if you feel like you're getting short shrift, let me know via PM and we'll hash it out.

Really well played, folks. Thought the ghasts and shadow were going to be a problem, but you all did what you needed to in order to survive.  Good job.

Also see the new notice: XP Tables for your review. Holler if you have any questions, and keep in mind that you gain XP as you adventure, so you can level up while immersed in the adventure.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Howdy - expect a post in the next day or two. I see Kullonar asked for the ring of feather fall. Don't forget to divvy up the rest of the magic as fairly as possible to those who want it. Failing that, you can give what you don't want/need to Weasel, our pseudo-NPC. He could probably make use of both potions, given his experiences in the dungeon thus far.

Remember, if it's not on someone's character sheet, I'll assume you all discarded it. That's one of the few hard and fast rules I have.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

both potions are on Weasel's character sheet.

Kullonar, put the ring of feather fall on your sheet, please. Now's the time to speak up if someone objects.

Zan has the wand & the spellbook.

Myrrick has the halbard.

Uthecar and Bruno have each other.

MAKE SURE YOU RECORD THE ITEMS ON THE CHARACTER SHEET!!!

I know I'm being a pain. It's for your own good.

Re: OOC: The First Chapter - August 2016

Item magical item count.  (let me know if I missed anything)
- Mage Spellbook (Zan)
- Magical Axe of chopping (Myrrick)
- ring of feather fall (Kullonar)
- potion of healing (Weasle ??)
- potion of invisibility (Weasle)
- Wand of Magical Missles (Zan / Ginger)
- Sphere of annihilation (lol just kidding on this one, couldn't resist)

Might be better for Kullonar to hold the potion of healing, as he would be much better suited to determine who needs it most.

While you are probably right in game terms, I am personally more a fan of healing being spread throughout the party than kept with just one character.  That way one failed save can't potentially destroy all healing for the group, and it also safeguards Kullonar.
