Land of Imagination/Land of Adventure

I've always loved playing low level characters.  Something about rolling the stats, picking the race/class, buying the gear and girding up for the first grand adventure gave me more of a thrill than that first epic battle against a dragon or worse.

That first +1 sword discovered in an abandoned keep, the first forgotten spellbook captured from an unwary rival, the first time my thief rolled successfully to pickpocket a fat burgher in some nameless town across the time/space continuum...those firsts are ALWAYS what bring me back to the gaming table.  It is to my great delight that even after all these years there are still firsts that thrill me to the core.

As I've gotten older, what's added to my gaming pleasure is the realization that an adventure is a living, breathing entity.  No, I'm not going all 'metaphysical' on you, but look at the other adventures many of us have shared.

They aren't great because of Kribli Dorlubbin or Surly Ned.  They're great because DM's like WineGuy and DMHedgeknight, or even Nestor, who's gone now but not forgotten, make them so.  Even better, as we get older, those worlds become even more complex, more complete, more...real.

So here we are.  This is probably one of the simplest dungeons TSR ever put out.  On the surface, the plot lacks depth, the goals are ill defined, the setting is incomplete and the characters are inexperienced.  Almost it seems trite in the face of gods and demons and dragons (oh, my!).

And yet, is it really all that simple?  The answer, of course, is yes.  Or no.  And that's what's great about it, really.  It' is as simple or complex as we allow it to be.

My charge to you is this: Help me make this game what you want it to be as a player, and start by giving every thought of what you want from this character from the moment you begin to roll the dice.  As we travel this road together, don't look at your choices as limiting, rather allow them to be a template with no limits.  Embrace the character, become your character and play your character as if you were the one In Search of the Unknown.

Thanks,
The Seer
