This game is very different than the previous game. It is a continuation that focuses on you characters and the plot, rather that total survival. Death is still possible. But the focus is more on the characters.

So as we are finishing up the last thread, the plan is to focus on what you guys are looking forward to. What aspects you enjoyed from last game and would like to keep (other than the survival) and which things you do not want.

There is already a set plot. But I would like to know things like more player-player interaction, dream threads, memory threads, certain skills you would like to use, etc.

Sure! As far as things I'd be excited by...

Flashback Threads:
I'd love some more of them! You expressed interest in focusing on her Sister for some of these, which would justify her mentor trait too.

Exploration and Wonder: Exploring the horrific environments is always a treat. You are fantastic at setting up the lore and horrifying situations, and I think that having a sense of childlike wonder mixed with incredible terror is really fitting for a game like this one.

Interpersonal Threads: We're quickly building up a cast of fun, unique characters, even if none of the ones from my story made it out here ha ha. Either way, it would be cool to see them get to know eacother. Naomi's something of a weird girl, and it'd be fun to see her interact with King and the others. Also, Scarlet's her favorite GI Joe, for those counting. ;)

Skill:. I do like the idea of wits and knowledge being important next to pure physical skill, and that's not just because I built Naomi with a high Mind stat. I think that some riddles, puzzles, and mental challenges are always a good bet. I would also like a chance to maybe use the Craft skill a little more, I imagined Naomi as a bit of a tinker and it could be cool to give her a better chance to use it now that she's not in a pure survival situation.

Things that I'd like to see more of...

Flashback Threads:  I really enjoyed the one with Ron's brother and the scary story.  More of those would be great as sort of a personal thread for us to RP on when other players aren't available.

Dream Threads:  I also really enjoyed the dream sequence with Abby as it had a very surreal and creepy feel to it.  I'd definitely enjoy more of those, or maybe a shared dream sequence.

RP/Interaction Threads:  Threads to allow us to interact with the other players as we explore and try to figure out what's behind the horrible goings on.  A chance to play off of one another and form a group that really bonds and works together with each of us using our strengths and compensating for the others weaknesses.

Skills:  Ron is quite good at Crafts, which I envision mostly as general handyman stuff, and I would like a chance to use that.  If possible, I'd also like the chance to use my "Swimming" specialty for Athletics and the "Farm Animals" specialty for Animal Ken.

And Scarlet is awesome!  Ron's favorite GI Joe would probably be that near-universal favorite Snake-Eyes, although Stalker is a pretty close second.

OK great! This is very good. Thank you for the feedback and direction. It will allow me to add some much needed context so I am not just making threads up on the fly.

You might be wondering what this game is if it isn't a survival game and what a drama/horror is in this instance.  Here's a few things that might help you think about where you want your character to go and what kinds of risks your character can take

1) Threads:  This game will be designed to go on, in some ways, indefinitely or until 'the plot' is solved. I will try to have 2 threads up at most times for each charcter. This will ensure that PCs have a means to post beyond the current 'plot thread.' This will include memory threads, dream threads, daydream threads, thought threads, and any other kind of parallel thread that might make sense.

2) Death: Your character can die, but it isn't as overbearing as the last game. The first game was important to as everyone needs to have the same background on Cherrywinks survival. Now, the focus will be on getting back home, solving the mystery of Cherrywinks, and helping other child characters out. If your character dies, you will be given the option to create a new one. However, you will not have to repeat Midnight roads. Again, in this game, this will be less likely as most of the threads will focus on PC and NPC interaction, drama and character development.

3) Helping other child characters out: Throughout the game your character will be given the option to 'go back to midnight roads' to save PCs from that game and bring them to this game.  BE careful though! This will be done at your own risk! But the rewards will be substantial. More on that later.

Questions?

That ramp is a masterpiece of engineering compared to the ramp that my older brother, our neighbors and me constructed one summer so that my brother could emulate his idol Evel Kneivel and jump Snake River Canyon the 3x3 ditch behind our house.  We spent hours planning it and made a spectacle of it.  We cut out red, white and blue stars and taped them to his white denim jacket and jeans.  We even "borrowed" the Instamatic camera and the plan was to get a picture while he was in mid-air.  We didn't have a video camera, so we had to make do.

I was 7 and he was 10 and we had about three other kids "helping".  That ramp consisted of three cinder blocks stacked on top of one another with a wooden board propped up for the ramp portion.

Fun times.

In today's Totally Unrelated News, my brother has a small scar on his forehead that he got from a childhood accident when he was 10 years old.

That's awesome. I remember constructing ramps just like that. It would take sometimes days and then we would go right off of them with bikes, skateboards or roller blades or roller skates. I can't believe I never broke anything. We would do spins and jumps. It was crazy. I wish would have though of borrowing a camera like that. That would have been great to record.

Going meta here, but unless we get lucky and Naomi is able to roll some successes with the Book, all we've got is the three names.  There is Jenny, who is Naomi's cousin.  There is Sebastian, who is Henri's friend.  And lastly there is Shawn, who is the last remaining player and does have a npc with him, so that could be a two saved there.

Any very out of character, player thoughts?

Take care who jumps in the book last!

The Babble Book with travel with that PC, the last one to jump in the book.

If you go somewhere without the Babble Book, you will be there permanently until the Book makes its way back to the cabin and opens up a door for you to return.

There is no work around to this. If you end up stuck in world without the Babble Book, you will be there until a future PC succeeds in bringing you back.

The way I understand it, the only way we could split up is for some to go somewhere after one of the kids listed and some to stay at the cabin.  I don't think we can go to two or more places by using the Book.  And the Book has to go where ever.

Of course I could have completely misunderstood things.

OK, so this is pretty much how it goes and its good to keep this going in OOC.

Anyone can go to any one of the names by jumping into the Book.

Whichever character chooses last and jumps into the Book last, travels with the Book.

If someone stays in the Cabin with April, the Book will end up going with the last person that jumped in. How does the Book know? It will wait only a little while before traveling with the last person that jumped in.

So, theoretically,

Henri could go to Sebastian

Ron and Naomi could go to Jenny. Or someone could stay in the Cabin.

Or any combination really. Just remember, whoever jumps in last, the Book will travel with them.

Got it, thanks for the clarification.  Now, on the getting back side, only the person or group that has the Book with them can get immediately back to the cabin, correct?  Then when they are back at the cabin, the group with book could bring back others?  or would they have to go where the other person is and then all go back?  And I'm assuming that those who went somewhere without the Book could eventually make it back to the cabin in some way like we all did originally, it just might take a bunch of time.

Yes, the above is correct.

No. Once a person makes it back to the cabin with the Book, it can be used from the cabin to open a door allowing others to return to the cabin.

quote:
And I'm assuming that those who went somewhere without the Book could eventually make it back to the cabin in some way like we all did originally, it just might take a bunch of time.

No. The only way back if you traveled without the Book is for someone to use it in the cabin, opening a door that allows you to come back. That is why it is very important where all of you go and who you allow to carry the Book.

Oh no! Posting is down. Could it be the holidays? Busy schedules? Boredom of this specific game? Or just what happens after the 'honey-moon' beginning phase of a game is over.

First, an explanation is in order. Some of you were driven from your thread in the cabin abruptly. While many of your characters may not know, its probably important that you as players do:

One of you cut a side-deal with Mr. Cherrywinks. You can call it betrayal, but maybe its more like looking out for number one. After all, you haven't been together that long. So, maybe it isn't being betrayed, as much as being 'sold out' for one's own survival and the survival of one's family.

I don't think it's the holidays yet.  Busy schedules is more probable, along with just life stuff happening.  I was feeling very down last weekend for a few days, others had computer problems adjusting to OS updates (no fun there), and work gets busy sometimes for others.  But I'd say the biggest problem for the past 3 to 4 days is that RPol has been having hardware problems with the site being down for hours at a time each day.

link to a message in another game

As to the other, it was easy to figure out from reading that character's thread and both Ron (the player) and Naomi (the player) have said that they read the other threads.  I'm not going to call it betrayal, but it is PC vs PC conflict.  That is if Shawn (the character) is going to continue playing with the rest of us (as characters).  I'm doubtful that Shawn would be accepted back by the other PCs.  I personally really don't like large PC vs. PC conflict but it's your game.

Stamina + Athletics +1(Equipment) to try to get to the trees before the Clown.

That's one action,

The next round would be: Athletics + Dexterity to see if you could time it and duck right before the branch so it hits the clown behind you

No problem about the triple post, this place has been acting up a bit for me as well.

It's just as good that I was away from the computer all day today since your addition of April having said something about Shawn being behind the problem will completely change my planned action.  but you and Shawn continued well past where I could have made an action.  Crud, now I'm going to have to completely reconsider what to do.  Both from the timing being past and change in information.

Damn. Sorry about that. Bad timing and miscommunication on my part. There's ways out and then there's ways out of the Circus. It will be interesting to see what happens.

On another note, the Winter Snowball fight game will have a number of potential players that the three of you might meet. Of course, there's no gauruntee that they'll survive to this game, but it should be fun to follow if only to look at the possibilities.

Looks like the snowball fight one could be fun.  Hope they all survive whatever you have planned, at least they might have other PCs to interact with.  I'm not expecting them to get to where they might meet up with any of us for at least a month real time though I wish it would be much sooner.  I'm rather tired of solo.

The snowball fight is definitely going to be a blast. As you can probably tell, it won't be the last game that feeds into this world. I don't know when they'll get here, or if even if any of the PCs in that game ever will. I guess it just depends on how it develops. Kind of like midnight roads, whatever happens, happens.

If you are getting tired of this one, that's OK. Let me know if you want to continue or not.

The first dot gives me two dots of professional contacts (which I'd probably fluff as being either through Mrs. Worthington or even Shawn's parents), the second gives me 9-again on two profession-related skills. "Actor" isn't one of the sample professions, but I imagine Expression and Subterfuge would be the logical choice. I can afford the first two dots at this point.

I dunno if it's more or less common now, especially given that you can just pull up The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari on Youtube to watch for free whenever you want, as opposed to the 80s where you'd have to specifically seek out a screening. But the way I figure, if you're going to find a movie buff who wants to force everyone to watch an important movie anywhere, you'll find him in Hollywood.

But on page 72 is says Fast-Talk Dice Pool: Manipulation + Socialize + equipment (talker) versus Composure + (Empathy or Subterfuge) (target)

Let's go with Fast-Talk Dice Pool: Manipulation + Socialize since Persuasion doesn't exist in the game

It's today, but I haven't got anything festive going on. I'm away from home on a trip. I'm in a motel with pizza I bought yesterday and a couple of single serving cherry pies from a gas station. I'll skype with my family later. Other than that, it's just a long weekend for me! :)

I'm out of cranberry juice and I have a taste for some, but I feel guilty about shopping today. If people stayed home this Thursday and Friday, then shops would close. I might just walk down to the gas station and pick up a bottle.

I don't get Black Friday at all. Even decades ago, I never wanted to go out and shop right after Thanksgiving. Friday is the day you set the house to rights after having so many relatives over. You pick up a game of basketball or street hockey before all the relatives leave. Get some exercise in after sitting around for a huge meal.

Just finished watching Stranger Things 2 with my family. They hadn't seen the final episode, either. They were all waiting for me to catch up and for us to all have time off. Most of us are in the US, but spread out across the country. So we all logged in together, had dinner and chatted for about an hour. Then we all watched the final episode together. Give or take about 30 seconds off. Then we shared titles of books to read and pictures. No street hockey this year, but still a good time.

I told a friend about this game and she showed me this clip from Kitchen Nightmares with an eerie, green holographic clown portrait.

If souls are like starfish, then you could have an abundance in no time.

You mention a team up with the bearded lady and Delilah. What would you want to do? One idea I had was masking a tv show like Star Search. Then people would show up and beg to have their souls given away.

I'm out right now, but I can find a good link at home.

I’m picturing Delilah’s drive and casual cruelty combined with Shawn’s manipulativeness and pathological need to be liked, and can’t help but see a terrifyingly functional monster that does more damage to society than the Circus ever could.

Or I guess Delilah’s self confidence combined with Shawn’s empathy would make for a well rounded, functional person with a successful career and healthy relationships, but that sounds boring.

Did you know that on this day in 2016, I made my first IC post as Shawn in the Midnight Roads game? Boy, did he (and I) have no idea where things were going to go. It's been two years since I started in this game, and ST, you've made it genuinely interesting, terrifying, and fun every step of the way! I know this sounds sappy, but genuinely, this is the best and most successful online game I've ever participated in, and I appreciate the heck out of you for it. I hope that Shawn's helped make these past two years fun for you too.

Has Shawn regenerated any Willpower this scene? I believe I'm tapped out at this point, but if he did anything particularly Creative or Dishonest since breaking into Bradford's house, he could qualify for getting a point of Willpower back or even a full refill. And this is definitely a situation where he'd need it!

I just realized that there’s technically two ways to interpret your instructions to make a Stamina roll - did you mean “make a Stamina roll (with no penalty) to stay conscious” or “make a Stamina roll to stay conscious (no penalties while conscious)”? Because I interpreted it as the former, but I can reroll with the penalty if it’s the latter.

Out of curiosity, how would this trigger work with deliberately telling a truth in a deceptive way? Or self-deception? How serious would the self harm be - enough to damage health levels? Re: OOC

Out of curiosity, how would this trigger work with deliberately telling a truth in a deceptive way?

Or self-deception?

Any speech that would be deceptive would be considered a 'lie' for the purposes of this trigger, including the examples above. It might be that someone says "who took the cookie from the cookie jar?"

If Shawn hid the cookie behind his back, the trigger would not take effect.

If Shawn said 'not me!' the trigger would take effect.

How serious would the self harm be - enough to damage health levels?

Shawn can choose from one of the following:

Biting nails - no damage, all kids would notice, all adults would notice

Cutting forearm - 1 lethal damage, adults might notice, one or two kids might notice

Cutting inside of leg - all adults would notice.

Also, is it something he has to do immediately, or is something he can hold until he’s in private or out of danger if he’s being threatened?

OK gang. I've been working on the story-lines and creating a few new NPCs. Thank you for bearing with me. For one, you can expect the following:

1) The game will start to pick up in terms of pace.

2) Your characters will face an important decision that will lead to a 'break period' where experience must be spent and time must advance about 2 months

3) A survey will be posted for you to answer. Your answers are meant to inform each other and the storyteller about your character's thoughts related to several issues.

Re: OOC

ok, Roger that, sorry about the confusion. This game will continue. Assuming that you guys want to play in the next story that is launching, the focus of this game will change slightly until the other game is resolved.

This game will slowly shift to focus on the "inner" aspects of your characters.

The newer story, will focus on the upcoming school year, and on an investigation by other kids as to what has been happening in your neighborhood so far.

How does that sound?
