Ralph was sitting on the porch when Shawn got outside. Stepping out next to him, Shawn heard a crunching sound under his feet --- it was the unmistakable sound of glass. Strewn across the floorboards of the porch were shards and fragments of the drinking glass that Shawn had given Ralph, liquid orange juice making dark stains on the wood.

"I did it." Ralph said without looking up. He was hunched over, elbows on his knees, hands holding up his chin as he stared out at the group of kids that they had both been with just moments earlier.

Shawn's first thought was worry for Ralph - or rather, his first thought was that the kind of person Shawn pretended to be would be worried about Ralph. "Are you okay? Did you cut yourself?"

"No!" Ralph said, turning to Shawn with anger. His fists were clenched by his sides and he stuck his neck out craning, face red.

"I hate this place! She loves you more! She's not...not...not...not...not ev...ev...even my Mom! I w...w....w...want my parents n'...h..home back!"


Then he turned around abruptly and began to run down the block, away from the house. Away from the kids. Away from everything.

"Ralph!" Shawn tries to sweep the broken glass to the side so no one hurts themselves coming out of the house, and then he gave chase. He wasn't really trying to run Ralph down, just keep pace and let him tire himself out.

OOC: Foot Race : Ralph's Speed is 6. Shawn speed is 10. Ralph must reach 10 successes to run away successfully. Shawn must equal Ralph's total successes to catch Ralph.  Ralph starts with 1 success.

Ralph cut through the line of hemlock trees bordering a neighbor's yard, feet hitting the grass in a hurried, if not awkward run that resembled Barney Rubble from Flintstones.

Shawn passed through the hedges, squeezing through the bushes and out to the other side. He looked left. He looked right. Then he looked up the road past the Donovan's house near the stop sign. There was no way to tell where Ralph had ran off to.

He was gone.

Shawn spent a few minutes gasping for breath. Then he sat down and tried to think. Maybe he couldn't just catch up to Ralph, but there were only so many places he could go, right? He just had to think, and maybe he could beat the younger kid there.

Shawn thought and thought. From what he knew of Ralph, there were three places that he might go: to the playground near Miller road where little kids liked to play, to the school - a place that Shawn knew Ralph asked about; and to the Master Maker's tent, where Shawn had first met him.

Shawn decided time was of the essence, and headed off to the playground. The school probably had too many adults this close to the start of the school year, and Shawn prayed that Ralph was not so foolish as to return to the Circus.
