Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

"I made you girls something, its in the fridge."

That was what the Mom-Thing said from the bedroom when Susan and Delilah were playing on one of the last remaining days of the summer. Moments later Delilah and Susan found themselves in the kitchen. It was Susan who opened the fridge and greeted what was waiting with a big smile.

In the center of the empty refrigerator was a glass pitcher of red Kool-Aid. It was the only thing in the fridge...

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

"O-kaaay!" Delilah hollered back from upstairs.

Susan opened the fridge and the blank white space only illuminated the object within. Another pitcher of Kool Aid. Delilah couldn't smile. It didn't look tasty anymore. Not since Junior's visit. Besides, Old Mom never let them have Kool Aid every day. She was very strict about sugar during the off-season. She said it would make your teeth fall out.

Delilah cupped her hands around her mouth and leaned back. "What's for dinner!" That ought to have been loud enough.

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

"It's Kool-Aid." Susan said dryly. There was a hint of disappointment in her voice, but also a hind that this was something that wasn't completely out of the ordinary.

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

"Kool-Aid!" Mom-Thing shouted back in a voice so authentic it sounded like it really could be the real Mom.

"Go ahead. Have a glass."

But that last sentence decidedly sound un-Mom like. It was too cheery when talking about Kool-Aid.

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

"I like KoolAid, too, but don'cha think it's weird? There's no food here."

Though she didn't like it, she pulled the pitcher from the fridge and set it on the counter. Then she climbed on the counter to reach a pair of cups. There wasn't anything wrong with the red drink. She'd had some earlier and nothing happened. It was pretty good.

She opened the pantry to look for something else.

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

Susan looked at Delilah. "Yeah, you know what? That is weird." She admitted. "I never thought about that. I actually just go over to Anthony's house to eat stuff with Tiffany. But yeah. You know? We never seem to have dinner at our house." She said, taking a moment to think about that fact as she looked at the Kool-Aid.

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

Delilah opened the pantry.

It was completely empty. Maybe if it was a story or a fairytale, the pantry shelves would have cobwebs or spiders crawling in them. But instead that, each shelf was completely pristine and shiny, like Mr. Clean himself had just recently polished them.

Delilah's stomach grumbled.

There didn't seem to be anything to eat in the pantry, or in the refrigerator, or even in the entire house.

Delilah: The Kool-Aid...

"It's not fair." Delilah slammed the last drawer shut. There was nothing to eat anywhere. It was like living in a dollhouse. No, it was worse. Even dollhouses had doll food.

"I'm getting outta here, C'mon." She jerked her thumb towards the staircase. If they couldn't eat at home, they'd find something in town. She'd search her room for some money. There had to be some lying around this place. If she couldn't find it, then she'd have to pluck up the nerve to ask The Other Mother.
