Delilah: Kids Running Around...OUTSIDE!

It was a sunny day out with a cool, gentle breeze. The neighborhood streets were filled with the sounds of kids laughing and then energy of kids running. It seemed like everyone was just, well, running around. There was just no other way to put it. These were all kids in the neighborhood that Delilah knew, but didn't know. She knew them, and could recal vaugue memories of them. But like everything else, those memories seemed to lack authenticity.

Still, kids running were kids running. That was a language everyone could understand in the moment. There was a boyancy to each kids laughter as they ran around in dizzying circles in the neighborhood streets, their footfalls made of irregular patterns and routes through neighbors front yards, the mindless giddyness of an all-child  football team with no respect for any logical path.

"Watch this!" Tiffany said, and she did a little, senseless jig on a neighbor's lawn, clicking her heels as she hopped off the grass onto the curb.

"Super-Fly Jimmy Snucka, off the top ropes!" Anthony yelled, jumping over a neighbor's bush, and into an adjacent front yard, running a crazy zig-zag pattern into the road.

Delilah: Kids Running Around...OUTSIDE!

Delilah stormed out of her house. Her stomach growled and, from the look on her face, she was ready to growl, too. She ordered her sister to follow and marched down the street. Hopefully, something on the boardwalk was still open. Her sour mood didn't hold for long. How could anyone stay mad with this great California weather? She heard the sound of kids tearing up and down the street, playing games they made up on the go. She vaguely knew their names. The new memories were like a wad of photo negatives jammed into an envelope: clear enough if she looked at them one at a time, but a muddy mess when pressed together.

"C'mon!" She hurried to see the new game. Something about jumping over a bush? She'd figure out/remember who was who as she went along.

Delilah: Kids Running Around...OUTSIDE!

Susan followed her older sister, plodding along the side as normal.  "Hey, it's Delilah!" Anthony said. He was the oldest one in the group, about a year older than Delilah. He was also the most animated and usually got in trouble at school, known for being a bit irresponsible and liking things like baseball and wrestling.

"Hey Delilah! Susan! You guys wanna play, We're playing 'Run Around!" Anthony yelled.

Delilah hadn't heard of the game in any official way. But it seemed self explanatory enough: Just running around and yelling and jumping the the Sumer weather, over bushes and sticks and in neighbor's yards.

"Hey...Anthony." That was his name. The new memories filtered in and she decided that the boy was alright.

The game sounded fun. She looked around and saw girls and boys running after each other and jumping over sticks and things. This game was right up her alley. A smirk curled on one side of her face. Her hunger was forgotten. For now. Afterwards, she'd be famished, but now there were challenges to face and dares to win!

"Hey, yeah! You're on! I can jump over anything you can. Suze can, too. You wanna play, right Susie?"

Susan did some kind of half-cartwheel, managing to land on her feet while not quite committing to balancing completely on her hands.

"Yeah!" Susan said. "I'm going to be the Lion Tamer!" She announced, adding her own element to the game.

Delilah: Kids Running Around...OUTSIDE!

When Shawn stepped out into the front yard to join everyone and play he was greeted by a spasm that developed on the right side of his face and worked its way down his neck.  At first, this seemed like just an odd physical occurrence that caused no pain.

But then, amid Bobby's running around and Anthony's talk of pro-wrestling, he started to feel that something was odd. Not quite physically or even with Shawn's feelings. It was more about the situation itself. It felt like dreams felt. Or like when adults used that French word or something that they said when they thought that they had done something that they were just now doing.

Shawn watched as the Susan girl who was younger than him and who he knew lived down the block from him joined the raucous kids that were running around.  She had appeared mostly in commericials and was the only one other than himself that had down so among his group of neighborhood acquaintances. Aquaintances, that, by most accounts, were becoming friends as the summer wound down.

But this thought of friendship was quickly replaced by what Shawn saw next:  The girl. The one from the Minnesota snow storm. She was running around too. But even though Shawn knew this to be strange, his mind was telling him that he already knew this girl. That she was a neighborhood acquaintance just like the others. That he had always known her.  But it didn't feel like his memory. It felt more like someone had told him of these things.

Something didnt' feel quite right...
