Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

"How the fugh....fughhh....fuck should I know?" Mom said, taking a hard turn on Sander's drive, laying wheel as the car rattled, nearly pressing Shawn's face against the passenger side window, one tire hopping up on the curb for a brief moment.

She was responding to Shawn's question about what kind of movie audition they were going to, and why it was taking place past bedtime. The swearing was not only uncharacteristic of Mom, but was also shocking, as was the fact that she was holding a bottle of Wild Turkey, some kind of foul smelling spirit from the liquor cabinet meant to entertain guests that never came to Shawn's house.

It was the middle of the summer now. Unlike the first few weeks, Shawn had seen very little of the Circus as of late, besides frequent visits from Griffix.

But things weren't normal. Not by any stretch.

Mom had grown increasingly forgetful and was drinking more and more. Dad, for his part, hadn't been to work for weeks. The last several days, Dad had spent outside digging in the backyard. Shawn had seen him with a shovel, back tanned dark brown, shaggy beard covered in dry mud, looking like some kind of crazed lunatic. The hole was five feet deep.

"Ya...know?"

Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

"Yeah, okay." Shawn nodded agreeably, as if Mom's response had been a perfectly cogent, reasonable explanation. He was trying desperately to pretend that everything was okay, that this was just how parents got sometimes. Some desperate part of him hoped that maybe getting this part would bring back the old Mom, the one who could be a little overbearing, but was always interested in his roles and didn't drink all the time.

Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

"Well, here wears....here we are?..m'kay."  Mom said, as if here was anything normal.

The car stopped in a parking lot with one single streetlight. Behind it, a dark building looking like an old warehouse. Several windows were boarded up, one had a jagged hole in it, like someone threw a rock through it.

Shawn unbuckled his seatbelt and hopped out of the car before looking back at Mom. The building looked scary, and he didn't want to go in without her.

Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

The Old Mom, before Shawn got involved in the Circus and it's magical ways, would be all over anything related to an audition, or danger for that matter.

But Mom was drunk and so she just blinked, head hanging, bleary eyed. "What? Itsssyer...fuckin' fault. I don't wanna be here asmuchas...the next Mom. But that's...what happ...happens when you blow all the other auditions and the movie bombs." She gave a half-hearted, drunk chuckle. The laugh of an insensitive drunk, whose words flow freely like beer from a tap.

Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

"...are you waiting in the car?" Shawn was so surprised his real feelings almost leaked through for a moment, but he recovered enough to make sure it sounded like he was asking an innocent question rather than judging Mom at all. Above all else, he didn't want to upset her.

Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

Moms words stabbed at the air, both lazy and sharp at the same time. They seemed to shorten the distance between Shawn and the car.

"....are you waiting in the car?"  Mom mimicked in a high, false tone of a bully on playground, the effect slighly spoiled by her slurred words but still just as filled with venom.

"Yes. I'm waiting in the car. Unless someone else's son wants to audition....because mine at his moment is utterly useless." She slurred with a wave of her hand

Shawn: A Mid-Summer Night's Audition

Shawn felt his heart wilt under direct scorn from his Mom. She hadn't said anything like that to him in...ever. He wanted to cry, but he forced it down as a selfish feeling. He just had to be better, he had to ace this audition, show Mom the last movie had been a fluke. Then she'd love him again, right? "O-okay. I'll tell you how it goes." The scariness of the building totally forgotten in his internalized shame and misery, he pasted a smile on his face and marched toward the door.

"You do-it. You 'jus go in ther and you 'jus do, 'jus-that." Mom slurred. As he marched towards the building, dark and ominous, he could hear Mom winding up the window on the driver's side of the car manually. It signified that perhaps the conversation was over. At least until Shawn got back.

If he got back.

Shawn walked to the door and turned the handle...

Bright florescent light filled the long corridor in front of the entrance way.
