Re: Chapter 12: The Ruins of Rhest
The greenspawn razorfiend enters a pitched battle against the six ogres, two of which are now pitched into the drink and attempting ton haul themselves out of the water. The ogres atop the ruined ceiling hurl javelins down at the beast, all the while shouting in their native tongue and presumably calling for reinforcements.
A towering, two-headed giant, an ettin, emerges from the ruined building. Wielding a massive spiked club, it balances precariously on the shattered boardwalk and berates the greenspawn razorfiend.
To no effect. The beast spews a cloud of poison gas and envelops the ettin in her toxic spew. The ettin coughs violently and emerges from the cloud only to wallop in the beast with its massive club.
Marklin and Eoni judge this to be the opportunity they are looking for and the pair begin to swoop down toward the ruined building, behind the ettin and ogre, but just as they are about to close on the building, a human-sized black dragon comes soaring out of the ruined ceiling. A goblin is astride, and seemingly in control of, the dragon. The goblin commands the black dragon to take to the skies and the monster complies.
Moments later, a hobgoblin in dark leather armor races to the top of the building and takes up position alongside the four ogres. The hobgoblin looks down at the chaos and begins chanting a spell...
Seizing the moment, Eoni and Marklin dart inside the ruined building through the large opening in the roof's northwest corner, 30 feet or so behind the hobgoblin and ogres.
Passing through the large gap in the roof, the duo finds the buildings interior to be near collapse. Water sloshes up through a large hole in the chamber's floor. This room might have once been a well-appointed library, now its shelves lie in disarray along the east and west walls. No sign of any books are apparent. A large portion of the ceiling is missing, as is a corresponding portion of the floor, which opens into the dark waters below. Piled into a corner of the room, the pair spot what must unquestionably be the small black dragon's hoard!
Partially buried beneath a heaping pile of coins, jewelry and gemstones, Eoni and Marklin see a gleaming suit of plate mail and a magnificent mace.
Immediately right of the hoard, a set of double doors is partially thrown open. Beyond, dim light trickles through the opened doorway, revealing what was likely a grand hallway, now bare except for soggy furs piled against one wall. A foul, fetid smell rises from this place, as if it were the den of some great beast. Two doors lead off this grand hallways. One to the north, the other to the south. In addition, two sets of stairs lead up to the roof. The sounds of battle are heard above.
