Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

The last weeks in Ravengro were a flurry of activity after Kendra's decision to journey to Lepidstadt to attend the university.

There was packing to do, and preparing the house. Darcon and Kendra spent a goodly amount of time organizing and cataloging the Professor's library, while Constantine made himself useful helping Kendra pack and settle her affairs.

Haephenus Gibs was hired as caretaker for the house and grounds, and Father Grimburrow enlisted Garland's help at the prison. It was a massive undertaking to respectfully exhume, catalog, and inter the many bodies still at the prison, beginning with the warden and his wife, but between Garland's firsthand experience and his extensive notes on the prison itself none of the dead went to rest nameless.

The farewell dinner at the Laughing Demon didn't put a patch on the celebrations after the defeat of the splatterman, but it was a warm meal between our heroes and all of their friends in Ravengro.

The journey to Lepidstadt took just shy of a fortnight, a week's travel around Lake Lias by carriage, and then a three day ride from Courtaud up the Lesser Moutray River by riverboat.

During the stay in Courtaud our heroes heard the first rumors of the sensational news in Lepidstadt, the capture of The Beast. As they traveled up river they could see more and more people making their way along the river road, more and more boats jockeying for position as they headed towards the city.

Upon their arrival in Lepidstadt they found an almost carnival air in the city, citizens excited for the upcoming trial.

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

The overall incidents at the Prison had finally culminated in SCG learning how to refocus his lay on hands into channeling energy and likewise he learned that his prayerful meditation would grant him a spell.

At that point he had been given the keep watch spell and had used it to keep watch over the prison each and every night until all of the bodies were removed.  It was as if he no longer required sleep to be recharged; he even asked each of his friends in turn to share his vigil.

Once the task was completed he finally did have a nights sleep, not due to need, but just because it seemed necessary.

The new armor was just as tough but felt lighter upon him; the new longbow was fit for a ranger, and he knew his abilities were not even close to a dedicated archer.

"Perhaps had my appearance been more fearsome, I too could have been the beast of some lonely outpost or metropolis."

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

It seemed like weeks of sleepless nights as he poured over old records with Father Grimburrow's assistance but they had a holy mission from their goddess and Garland would not yeild to simple fatigue. They had spent the remaining month cleansing the taint of Harrowstone until every last apparition had disappeared and for his part Garland was uncompromising in his insistance that no spirit be allowed to remain. His investigations and rituals were exact and brutally efficient but he also showed great pity and understanding to the still active spirits. When the final ghosts had passed on he made it a point to melt down the iron maiden and the other items they found in the torture chamber before turning them into a new monument to remember the fallen in the last month. When it was time for him to depart he wrote a new letter to be delivered to the cathedreal in Caliphas, informing them of all he had encountered in Harrowstone and that he would be traveling to Lepidstadt for as yet undetermined amount of time.

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

Not being one to write long letters SCG had mostly hired a scribe to copy his friends record and scrawled a brief letter to his parents before sending it back home.  He knows it likely that a historian from the temple may well travel to Harrowstone and a book eventually be completed.

He had set aside a pot of copper pieces at the laughing demon where any man woman or child can eat a meal for no charge, and likewise anyone with an extra copper can add to it.

The main focus will be getting the books to the library and Kendra off to college...

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

The past few weeks had been busy for Darcon, but enjoyable nonetheless. Aside from helping Kendra catalogue the professors library, Darcon spent time with Alendru, increasing his knowledge about the arcane arts.

His Order specialized in magicks of storm, air and thunder while also studying other elements to a lesser degree, while Alendru had collected lore of different kinds of magicks over the course of his life.

Darcon found it enlightening to broaden his scope and delve deeper into other magickal theorems and spells, and felt it made him a more complete mage, but not at the expense of his existing focus and base of aeromancy.

After their travails in the village it felt good to pursue quieter and more academic interests, as well as more mundane ones, such as studying the letter from Montegaine Crowl. He vowed to make her acquaintance at the first possible opportunity when they reached Lepidstadt.

Darcon also enjoyed helping in training and instructing Kendra; he knew they were destined for more trials and she with them, and the young woman would need all the skills she could learn to prepare herself for the danger that lay ahead.

When after days of enjoyable journey they reached the city, Darcon's mind, like so many others, was intrigued by the news of the capture of this 'Beast'. He looked forward to seeing how the trial proceeded, though he hoped it would not distract them from their job at hand.

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

Delivering both of his charges one the books of the professor and the other Kendra to her training was a satisfying completion of a duty.  SCG had then sought a temple or cleric of Abadar in the city itself.

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

Kendra seemed fascinated by the city, gaping wide eyed at the tall buildings and the bustling docks, the rushing carriages and the eclectic mix of shops, warehouses, and homes. Lepidstadt was the largest city that she had ever been to.

The morning after the group's arrival Kendra busied herself with her letter of application to the University. She seemed inordinately nervous, repeatedly consulting some of the books that she had opted to bring from Ravengro and asking Darcon and Garland for advice on the wording and composition again and again, crumpling the parchment and starting over nearly as many times.

It was midmorning when a messenger arrived with an invitation to tea from Judge Daramid. Kendra, head down over her quills, waved our heroes off without glancing up, utterly engrossed in her writing.

And so the three of them set out from the inn for a fateful meeting with the judge.

Chapter 2.1 - Arrival in Lepidstadt

SCG sets aside the platinum pieces for safe keeping.

“I have enough funds for a new wand of curing; or if we go in together we can also get some potions.”

If no one offers SCG plans to purchase these cheap potions
