Medical Facilities

The ships medical facilities are like a small hospital. Its front desk manned by a medical droid, this device can quickly get patients to where they need to be. Cold, sterile, not a place you want to stay too long.

Kray, your quarters are at the barracks section of the ship, the top levels below the bridge. Your particular appartment is at deck 9, section F-13, room 6. Your personal belongings are stored in hold number 5.

Sliding across the floor in a decidedly unprofessional manner on a rolling stool, Addison flicked open a cabinet and retrieved a blister pack of tablets. "Congratulations!" She tossed Troy the medicine. "You've won yourself a 72 hour course of radiation treatment. It's mostly iodine, so no real risk of side effects. Find me immediately, and I do mean right the fuck away, if you experience any nausea or see any skin lesions." Bedside manner was apparently not high on the good doctor's list of professional priorities.

"I wouldn't worry too much. The nausea would have set in by now if things were dire. But I'm serious about finding me if it develops. We have stronger medication, but it's unpleasant, it takes hours, and we didn't bring much of it. So you start with the iodine. First dose is the worst, you have to choke down about eight pills at a go." She rolled across the floor again, this time to a small cooler from which she produced a bottle of water. It wasn't cold, but the seal was intact. "Go on," she said encouragingly.

Eight? You serious? Thats enough to make any man bloody well nauseous.
Troy took the water as he sat down on the examination bed. He stared at the eight brown pills for a while before slamming them all in the back of his throat. He quickly downed the bottle of water. Having a drink after so many years did him good.

How had she missed this? Had she misread his initial readings? Silently, Addison berated herself at some length. Outwardly, she smiled encouragingly at Troy. "Drink up. You'll want that in your system for what comes next." She rose while he drank and began assembling a cocktail of medications. When she returned to Troy's side, still seething inside at her overconfidence, she carried a small tray crowded with saline bags and small bottles. Snapping on a pair of latex gloves, she started an IV line as soon as Troy finished drinking. It wasn't easy, his veins were rolling all over the place; finally, she gave up on the normal elbow IV and went in through the vein on the back of his hand. More reliable, if not as comfortable. She hung the saline bag and started the drip, then she started adding to it. First up was Reglan to control the nausea and the shakes, and morphine -- he shouldn't be in much pain yet, but it would come soon enough. Next was DTPA, a chelating agent that would bind to most of the heavier elements coursing through Troy's blood. To that she added Radiogardase, tinting the whole bag a brilliant blue and drawing out the elements the DTPA didn't address. Finally, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, prophylaxis against infections in the lesions that would soon appear across his body.

That was all she could do for now. She waited until the morphine carried Troy off to a fitful rest before she went to the phone mounted on the wall. She consulted a chart next to it and called up to Engineering.

She knew what she had been thinking, though: That his levels were in the perfectly standard zone for iodine treatment. No matter -- he would soon have enough chelation agents in his blood to suck dry a small reactor. She was not going to lose her first patient after waking up.

From: Cryo Chambers

Colt strolled into the Medical Facilities, his body regaining it's normal rhythm. His stomach did feel like it was turning inside out and he was parched beyond belief, but the soreness and the aching were quickly escaping his athletic body. He did some arm stretches as he waited, noticing the doctor was preoccupied with someone who looked like they needed the attention more.

Colt looked at the man who the Doctor was trying to stick a needle in, "You all right man? You look a little under the weather."

When the Doctor was free to talk, Colt began, "Hey there Doc. Ya know, I'm normally a check up every six months kinda guy, but I've been a bit lax on it for this past century, so I figure I should probably make sure that everything is working properly. My throat is really dry and my stomach feels like it's doing some gymnastics, though I figure that's pretty normal. Is there anything else I should know about that comes with being a 134 year old man?"

"There's not a leak," Addison clarified. "We had to replace the batteries, which are shielded. We were behind the shields. As long as you don't go into any of the off-limits areas without a suit on, you'll be fine." When Troy started coughing, Addison was at his side in a flash, rolling him onto his side to keep him from aspirating. Vomiting blood might be expected, but not coughing it up like this. She frowned and helped Troy back into a more comfortable position once the fit had passed, then quickly stripped off the sheet and brought him another. That done, she returned to the medicine locker and added a dose of codeine to control the coughing, as well as a coagulating agent to prevent any more internal bleeding.

Once she was finished, she went to the computer and pulled up Troy's records. A blood transfusion wouldn't hurt. Marrow would be even better, but medical technology had yet to reach the point where marrow could be stabilized long enough to survive the length of time they had been in cryo sleep.

She got the transfusion started, then turned to Lee. "Alright, bed 3. Let's get you checked out."

I could go try and find someone to help you, if there's anyone else on board that could help out down here. Or if he needs more blood, I'm a universal donor." Colt said with a helpful shrug. Other than that, he sat there and let her do her examination. There was a time when he had hated going to the doctor and used to get really anxious about it. It wouldn't be that easy, would it? She'd probably have to test everyone on board, including those still in cryo, to find a match.

She quickly drew another dose of an antiemetic and a coagulant and slid the needle into the medicine port on his IV. That should control the bleeding and vomiting. She needed a sedative for the convulsions. She scanned the shelves of the medication locker for ativan; once she found it, she administered it in the same manner. Once that was done, she cleaned Troy up as best she could. Silently, she pleaded with the gods for a well trained nurse to wake from cryo soon.

What did Addison need? Good question. She took a breath and thought about the answer. "Grab that green kit, the one on the desk." She needed to get a blood sample and see if Troy had been exposed to anything other than radiation. If he hadn't, there was little she could do for him. The only cause for convulsions after radiation exposure was total organ collapse, and not even she was that brilliant.

Once Colt retrieved the kit, she nodded her thanks. "Now I need you to call the Captain. Tell him I need to talk to him, but can't leave Medical. Tell him it's an emergency."

She plucked a syringe from the kit and used it to draw a blood sample, which she then squirted onto a small strip of paper. If he had been exposed to any of a dozen toxins, it would change color accordingly. If he had been exposed to something else, or was in total system failure, there wasn't much she could do beyond making him comfortable for the duration.

Sticking his head in Kray immediately notices two people frantically at work on Troy, who is vomiting blood and convulsing severely.

Addison's paper strip does not change color. No known toxins in Patterson's blood.

The captain acknowledges Jordan's message.

Mikoto has a hard time resting with all the panic going on in the main emergency room.

Colt lit up at her smile. He let things go to his head pretty easily. However this was quickly shaken by the man vomiting blood and convulsing. He set the kit down, open so that she could access what she needed to access while being out of the way enough that she wouldn't bump into it. "Dorn got the message." Colt affirmed after he received a response from the Captain.

Colt then returned to Troy's side, ready to do anything else Addison needed him to, but on autopilot until given orders. He was making sure that Troy wasn't going to choke on his own bloody vomit and that he wasn't convulsing and spazzing himself out of the bed.

Lt. Maxwell entered the Medical Bay carrying her two samples.  She had seen Lt. Shadow leaving as she approached, but he had turned away from her to walk down the hallway.  That was just as well.  She had business at the medical area and didn't need the distraction.

The Detective logged herself in at the reception desk and waited for some official sign that she would be allowed access to the back.  She put 'other' in the 'reason for visit' blank.  She wasn't in a hurry.  The Doc was probably as adamant about her procedures being followed as Jen was in the Cop Shop.

Patterson goes suddenly limp under Jordan and Connolly's hands. For a moment they both fear they lost him, but there is still a pulse, though feint at times. Slipping into a coma at least causes the convulsions to stop, and the vomiting of blood to cease.
They both look a bit like they just came from a slaughterhouse, as does the usually pristine white examination room.

Addison leaned back, taking a deep breath. She gave Colt another smile, this one somewhat shaky. "Good work. Thanks for pitching in. There's a shower room and some clean jumpsuits that way," she pointed to the back of the medical bay. Her own jeans and sweater were ruined, but she seemed not to notice, focusing instead on Troy and his vital signs. "I don't like this. He shouldn't be going into organ failure this soon, but there's no toxin in his system that could account for it. I guess I way underestimated just how much radiation he was exposed to." She sounded upset, but was trying to keep herself from falling apart over the miscalculation.

Still covered in blood, she looked up and saw Jennifer waiting for her. "Be right with you," she called, pulling off her lab coat. She quickly washed her face and hands, then stepped behind a privacy screen to strip off her clothes and pull on a set of scrubs. There was still blood in her hair, but there was nothing she could do about that just now. "What can I help you with?" she called over her shoulder as she reattached a monitor that had fallen off during Troy's convulsions.

Lt. Maxwell looked at the Doc.  "I'm investigating what has happened to the Marco Polo.  One on the things I'm looking into is a murder.  I discovered the mummified body on the bridge just after I awoke.  It should be transported here."

"This is what I need.  You're the closest medical person I have to a forensic pathologist.  Your medical records are probably restricted to medical personnel only.  I need you to check the body's DNA against the five thousand medical record you have for an identification.  I also have two samples of skin cells taken from a crime scene.  Run the DNA from these two samples against your medical data base as well.  I should have additional samples for you this afternoon."

Jen took a deep breath, then let it out.  She voice got quieter, flatter.  "SGT Troy Patterson is one of mine.  I know you are doing your best.  But, just in case he doesn't make it, I want to know what killed him.  Then, I'll find out who killed him."

Colt returned the smile, though with a sense of unease. The only thing that seemed worse to Colt than seizing and vomiting blood, was nothing. Nothing was hard to treat."Of course." Colt replied with a nod. "Could it be a toxin that the system couldn't account for? We've been in space for a hundred years, and apparently there was some sketchy stuff going on for the duration. Could a new toxin have somehow developed? Or...or could the ship have come into contact with anything that could have allowed foreign substances on board?" Colt asked, not sure what the likelihood of any of that would have been.

He dipped into the shower room and quickly stripped off the nasty jumpsuit. He was thankful that he had managed to avoid getting the puke on his pristine shoes. He definitely had quick feet that was for sure. He briefly rinsed off in the shower, though realizing he would have to wait until later to really clean his hair, he mostly just scrubbed the fresh puke off his hands and face. He then put on a fresh jumpsuit and his shoes and emerged from the room.

The bloodwork on Patterson comes back soon enough, the medical facilities computers making quick work of it.
To Connolly it looks pretty much as you could expect from a radiation poisoning victim, the severe radiation attacking Patterson's cells at molecular levels.
That however does not explain the speed at which his body is shutting down.
As the results pop up, the computer instantly flags the results. Big red warning signs start blinking on the screen.

Warning. Unknown substance detected

A chill runs down her spine.

Gently coercing her ahead of him he continues, "I'm Captain Dorn. You must be... don't say it... our resident japanese superstar, Miss Mishida. Welcome to the awakened. You will find most people still asleep, as we are running on skeleton crew for now. Once you have the doctor check you out, make sure you visit Jan VanderBeek. Leading Mikoto gently back to medical ahead of him Dorn enters the reception area of the hospital facilities. There he presses the button to indicate he has arrived, and yells into the hallway.

I've already told Cornell to triple check all the radiation suits and take Troy's out of commision, and I'm doing everything I can for the radiation, but I just found something new in his blood. An unknown toxin of some sort. I'm going to step up the fluids and see if I can flush his system, but it doesn't look good." To Colt, she added, "As for you, I'm afraid you're stuck with me until I can clear you -- you were exposed to way too much blood."

She was already moving before she finished speaking, heading to the cooler and tossing Colt a bottle of water. She then went to the back room where she rummaged around frantically, finally emerging triumphant. "Activated charcoal," she explained. "It's probably overkill, because I strongly doubt you swallowed anything, but put my mind at ease and take it anyway." She took two large, chewable tablets from the box and handed them to Colt. "They taste vile, but it'll be over soon. I'll check your blood in about fifteen minutes, see if you picked anything up." She'd have to check her own blood as well, obviously, but her first priority seemed to be Colt and Troy, not herself.

"I do typically avoid swallowing bloody puke, for more reasons than one. But if it puts you at ease, I'll eat the...charcoal?" Colt said, taking tablet and the water bottle. He put it in his mouth, and made a strange face at the taste. He quickly tried to wash it down with the water, though there was no immediately getting rid of that sensation. "Well, since I'm already here and have already been exposed, I'm free to continue being your nurse until you clear me." Colt said with a smile after he finished the water. "Though if you want to spend more time with me, next time just ask if I want to hang out on the rec dec or something. Quarantines are so cliche." Colt joked with a smirk, hoping to ease the stress level the doctor was under at least a little bit.

Colt looked to the Captain and the other newcomer to the Med Bay. He gave them a friendly smile and listened, taking note of their words. There was something strange going on here, and while Colt was likely not going to be briefed directly, as he was just a driver, he was just as curious as everyone else about what was going on with the ship.

"Don't knock it. I've seen charcoal fix all kinds of poisoning situations." Addison bit her lower lip, deep in thought. Could it be something that grew and mutated on the ship itself over the last century-and-then-some? If that were the case, everyone should be getting sick, not just Troy. It had to be something that was in his suit, or in the meds she had given him. But the meds had been sealed, and how would a radiation suit get poisoned?

Still thinking in circles, Addison went to check Troy's vitals and hang another bag of saline solution. She turned the drip up so that it would flush his system faster.

Colt joked with a chuckle. "So is the quarantine lifted? Am I free to go grab some chow now? I would literally kill for a burger and fries." Colt now looked a little out of place in the mess of medical personnel that were now taking over in the area. The disheveled nature of his hair contrasted with his pristine uniform in a way that didn't make him look like just a patient, however he certainly did not have the same presence as a doctor or a nurse. He looked as if he'd just jumped into the middle of the chaos, though that lined up with the truth fairly well.

Amidst the mass of movement, Colt also noticed one woman standing in the waiting area of the medical facility. She seemed like she was waiting for something different, though Colt was not sure what she was looking for and just gave it a shrug. He was sure someone would be with her relatively shortly, once they had set up the facility and gotten it fully staffed and operational.

Micaela nodded at the doctor's suggestion and then he was gone. He hadn't been rude, per say, but he clearly had more important things to worry about than a random civilian that got defrosted early. Alone in the examination room again the young woman rolled down the sleeve on her jumpsuit, rose to her feet and started for the door.

"Marco," she started as she moved back through the waiting area. "of the crew currently active, who has clearance and the capability to perform maintenance on your code?"

The message sent she grabbed a protein bar from a dispenser in the waiting room and then left for the Cargo Hold to find her stuff.

You want me to work on the group, or the solo. If the group I'd recommend putting Troy on ice, it's likely to stop further deterioration of his condition. Additionally its advisable to limit the number of defrosts to those currently opetational until we find a mitigation to this situation.

"But, given the amount of planning it took to implement this hijacking and the skill sets required to pull off the job, it seems unlikely that only three or four people could have accomplished it.  They took a staggering amount of equipment, far more than three people would need.  Also, why would all of this have taken place just for the benefit of a handful of people.  Given the scope of the hijacking, the quantity of equipment stolen, and the need for a varied gene pool, I'm reasonably sure that whatever Earth faction set this up, they wanted to establish a colony of their own."

Jen took a deep breath, then let it out slowly before she continued.  "I'm no geneticist, but there's probably a certain number of people you need to keep the human race going.  Doc, other than those four pod numbers and the the ones who have been awakened today, I need...  we all need to know how many more of the cryo pods are empty."

"Marco, please give Lt. Maxwell an overview on the current status of all crew. Sort by status and location, generic. Thank you."

Genassi seemed to contemplate Maxwell's words as the ship AI started to rattle its reply.

Good evening doctor Genassi, I have currently been assigned 5000 crew. 4993 of them are accounted for. 3 are missing. 4 are dead.
The dead are located in pods 2030, 3059, 4032, and the last one with you in the hospital morgue. The three missing crew are not on ship.

"Cause of death Marco?"

Carl Riordan, pod 2030, died due to pod failure.
Figaro Valdez, pod 3059, died of cryo freezing.
Zoe Depardieu, pod 4032, died of cryo freezing.
I have no information on the fourth crewman Colonel.

Genassi looked surprised.
"Why not Marco?"

AI cannot access those files.

"Marco, identify missing crew."

AI cannot access files.

Genassi shrugged. "Looks like I cant be of much help Lieutenant. Seems our good old AI has no files on the victim, or the three missing crew. Now if you'll excuse me, I have three dead people to recover from their pods it seems."

After doing some simple initial tests to make sure they have indeed found an unknown life form, Lee Jay is certain what they have is indeed alien in nature.
The triple-celled organisms are dormant in all samples but one, that of Patterson, so her next step is to find out why. But how? What was different in Patterson?

Lt. Maxwell turned her attention to the one called Fischer.  "The body was found on the bridge.  It had been there for quite some time.  The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the head, probably the cause of death.  Verify that the bullet is what killed him.  I'll need the bullet for ballistic evidence.  I also need the fingerprints to run against my files.  And, as I suggested to the Colonel, I need his DNA run against both the current and backup medical files for an identification."

Hans is already grabbing a set of surgical scrubs by the time the LT is done talking.

"If you would like to stand in LT there's a spare set of scrubs in that locker, if not I'll send the results up to you as soon as I'm finished"

Commandeering a lab with a operating table in it, Hans begins work on the Post-mortem.
By this time, all of the bodily fluids would most likely be gone, meaning a toxicology would be out, however he started with the basics and worked his way up while retrieving the data Lt Maxwell asked for.

The bullet and any fragments he removes and put's in a Petri dish off to one side, he does the same to a small clump of hair and some skin shavings. He takes a set of fingerprints off of each hand, using a set of clear strips and slides them into a protective casing.

He runs the skin and hair samples under one of the labs scanners.
"Marco, run this DNA sample against all medical records we have on hand" Remembering what LT Maxwell said he adds "Current and Backup...also run these fingerprints as well please, and would you be able to give me an ID on these bullet fragments as well? I'd like that in print as well, two copies please." He says brusquely.

Hans walks back into medical,a thoughtful look on his face. The Lieutenant had been very...driven,still, he supposed that's what you want when you're investigating a murder. Especially one that may have set them off course by about a hundred years...His thoughts turned to the body in the lab, Fred Green, IT tech from Langley,Virginia...The place depicted by dozens of spy flicks as being the headquarters of the CIA.
Hans frown deepens as he tried to banish his paranoia,it wasn't his job to make those kind of speculations.

Entering the lab, he scans the database for matches to the DNA samples Lt Maxwell gave him.
While the computer is processing Hans, dons a set of surgical scrubs and begins examination of bone density and calcium levels, he runs a scanner over the skull as well as other parts of the body, just in case the density of the skull differs drastically to the expected density of the rest of the body.

The reception droid directs Danny to room 4C, where the marine is resting. A quick overview tells Danny the man will keep his hand, but will likely not be using it for a few weeks. He is currently asleep.

Jennifer has barely taken a seat when colonel Genassi comes walking in, dataslate in hand. Seemingly struggling to read what it says he reaches in his pocket for a set of glasses. After a quick scan of the document he hands it to a nurse. "I'll check on the sergeant later, keep him in a coma please. His body requires the rest. Increase the iodine to 2 mg, and get him a 20 percent saline solution. The ten percent isn't doing what it should."

He then looks around the waiting area, quickly locking eyes with Maxwell.

Re: Medical Facilities

After arriving in room 4C, Danny sat down next to the injured man he had "helped" earlier, he didn't see the point in staying long, after all the man was asleep. And even though he was trying to avoid stereotypes, he felt his confidence drop in using sympathy-filled words with a person who had possibly fought in wars.

Besides, Danny was gonna try and repress his characteristically-unique urge to be as nice as literally possible all the time to everybody for a while. He figured a spaceship full of people would probably just find him weird and then throw him out the hatch or something. Most the people here were nice enough anyway, so it's not like his input to the community joy was needed.

After thinking too much about himself, he thought some nice thoughts to the man, not really a prayer, (Danny wasn't very religious,) but better than nothing (at least to him), and left quietly.

He checked his watch, it read 9:08, he still had 1 hour to burn before he could meet up with VanderBeek for a possible job.

He decided to head back to his quarters to find something to do.

Genassi offers Drago a view through an electroscope. The organism is clearly visible, reproducing, moving, multiplying, eating red blood cells as it grows. The organisms almost outnumber the red blood cells three to one, growing quickly.

Lee Jay looked up from her petri dish. She carefully placed a cover on it, then switched on the communicator of her hazmat suit.
"So far I have been doing checks on all crew bloodsamples taken when the woke up. All but one of the crew, including us, have the organism in these samples. It is safe to assume we are all contaminated, but in everyone except Cpl. Patterson the organism is dormant. I was planning on doing radiation tests next, but new samples keep coming in as they wake up more people, so I haven't gotten around to that yet. The only person not infected seems to be a civilian called Colt Jordan. I have yet to figure out why exactly. At first I thought it was because his blood type was rare, he's an AB-, there's at least two other crewmen with that bloodtype that do carry the organism, so I have ruled that out.
She points at the petri dish she just closed up.
"It seems the organism does need blood to survive. I have tried planting samples of them in a controlled environment, but without blood cells present, both red and white, the triple celled organism quickly withers away. In the average sample there is one organism for every million red blood cells. In the sample taken this morning of Cpl. Patterson they are quickly starting to outnumber his bloodcells. In theory the man should already be dead..."
She seems to shrug, hardly noticable in the hazmat suit. Her eyes betray a new sense of purpose though, a look Drago had not seen that morning in the mess hall. Something had peaked her interest.

As Hans and Genassi try to hold Patterson down the nurse works hard to close up the wound. While doing so two other wounds spontaneously appear, both starting to gush blood too. Judging by the blood below the man´s shirt another wound has appeared around his abdomen as well. While having some combat experience, and having seen some gruesome wounds out in the field, this is still new for Hans. A human body is not supposed to spontaneously burst open and start bleeding.
Soon the monitors hooked up to the soldier start to show an erratic heartbeat, followed quickly by a flatline and a piercing sound indicating heart failure.

Drago works away at the samples when an alarm sounds from one of his computers. It was analysing a small sample of the active blood, and now clearly shows the tri-celled organism has begun to multiply. And multiply fast. Within a few seconds of the alarm, the small glass plate containing the sample bursts, too small now to contain the clump of cells that is growing too big for it.
Then, as suddenly as they started multiplying, the cells all wither away, contact with the air destroying them.

Drago follows protocol and quickly contains the sample for study, making sure to collect all the dead cells. He then reviews the records trying to determine what caused the sudden growth and more importantly he begins looking for what in the air caused its sudden death.

Re: Medical Facilities

Its the oxygen, Drago quickly concludes. Thats most likely why the cells attack the red blood cells of the host, and it is most certainly what kills them as soon as they come into contact with it. While they grow rapidly, as soon as they come into contact with oxygen, they die. The clump on the shattered glass actually shows that only the cells on the outside are dead. Those that are encapsuled still live, but have stopped multiplying. Are they intelligent? Is it instinct?

Genassi stared at the flatlined monitor for a long while, a tear rolling down his cheek.
"Sorry, I've never gotten used to losing patients. Especially not those that save the lives of an entire ship." He removes his latex gloves, throwing them in the bin.
"His name was Troy Patterson. Corporal. He was brought in with radiation poisoning, minor really. Patterson here was amongst the first few people to wake up, and they discovered the ship was going to explode due to the fusion reactor being overloading. That was to be expected after 115 years of continued use. Somehow they managed to change out the waste collector batteries, but the poor corporal here had a tear in the back of his hazmat suit. A minor case of poisoning, doctor Connoly treated him for it. Thats when everything went wrong. We found out he had some kind of organism in his blood that reacted to the radiation. It activated, woke up, whatever, but it started to eat his red blood cells immediately. I can only assume that same organism now killed him.
The doctor looks at his own blooded scrubs, then at his empty hands, turning them over and over.
"And to think we all carry that organism in our blood... I hope the lab team gets some answers."

Drago records his results and then begins to start looking at other properties in the blood samples and the atmosphere that could trigger the organism into rapid cell growth. Slowly going through each element contained in the blood sample and in standard atmosphere. As these experiments continue he also looks at temperature as a possible contributing factor.

His primary concern was finding a way to effectively eliminate the organism from a hosts blood stream without causing the rapid growth. The fact that oxygen quickly killed the organism was promising. Now he just had to come up with a way to safely deliver oxygen to the organism or a way to filter the blood through a oxygen rich environment.

Re: Medical Facilities

With Lee Jay Musashi assisting him now she is finally done processing blood samples, the two of them quickly discover that radiation has indeed been the key factor in activating the organism. As soon as the radiation levels reach critical for a human being, the cells somehow become active and start the human red blood cells. They do not feed on it, they show no signs of parasitic behaviour, nor do they form any symbiosis with the blood cells. Rather they just destroy them, slowly taking away the host's ability to transport oxygen through its veins.

Just when they start testing the speed rate of this destruction two more men in HAZMAT suits enter the laboratory. Its the colonel, and a younger man.

"Mr. Urzica, Ms. Musashi, please, carry on, just act like we are not here."
Genassi then stands at a distance, not intent to get in the way.
"Like I said Hans," he tells the young man next to him, "I have two good scientists on it, and a high tech laboratory here. The only lab better suited for this research than this one would be in Shanghai, back on earth, and I think my scientists here could rival theirs, but so far we have no idea whats going on. Or do we Mr. Urzica?"

Drago continues his work after the colonel's entrance, but manages to answer the question as he changes some parameters on his next series of tests. "Yes Colonel I believe Miss Musashi and myself have made some headway. The radiation was definitely the triggering factor of the organism becoming active, and it appears a radiation level in the critical level would be required."

Pausing to check a calculation, "We have also discovered that the organism is vulnerable to oxygen." Drago hands the colonel a pad showing the organisms reaction to the presence of oxygen. "When active the organism attacks and destroys red blood cells. My theory for now is that it is possibly a defensive measure to limit it's exposure to oxygen. We are currently working on figuring out a way to introduce the required oxygen directly to the organism."

Re: Medical Facilities

Musashi shakes her head in denial.
"First of all, all the blood on board is infected, so a transfusion would just add organisms to an already infected host. Second, because you need to add oxygen, you would cause the natural defenses of the blood to activate clotting, and as such would render it useless. We have yet to figure out a way, but having Dr. urzica here to assist me makes a lot of difference. Especially now that I have been able to check all the samples and can actually do some real work, colonel."
She walks over to a piece of lab equipment containing several vials of blood. She injects several of them with pure air.
"These samples are all infected, but dormant. Now, watch what happens if we add oxygen to the dormant cells."

For a while they wait. A long while.

"Nothing. Nothing happens Colonel, as the dormant organisms are untouched by the air. They are vulnerable only when activated, but once they are, in thirty hours or so they start to rapidly multiply. I can only assume once that happens, it kills the host."

Genassi nods.
"It does," he replies sadly. "Cpl. Patterson died ten minutes ago when his body suddenly started to spontaneously create wounds. There was nothing we could do to stop it."

Drago listened to the conversation while mulling over what was being said, "For something along the lines of dialysis to work you would have to be able to irradiate the blood as it went through, to trigger the organism into an active state. Then oxygenate the blood to a point where the organism would die of exposure. The problem is ...." Drago switched his monitor to show the recent sample that had died, "the organism will encapsulate itself in dead cells to avoid the oxygen, as this sample did. I suppose it may be possible to add a filter to the process after oxygenation, but then you are running the risk of some of the surviving active organisms slipping back through and into the blood stream."

"I am currently running tests to see what the organism is surviving on. We know it doesn't feed on the red blood cells, it simple destroys. If we could find something it is attracted to we may be able to synthesize a antibody that would act as shall we say camouflage until the organism had ingested it."

Walking the corridors of the ship Eric once again is filled with a sense of awe and wonder and the overwhelming sense of loneliness dissipates more and more with each person he sees. On arriving he notes that the front desk and reception area actually looks much like the one he had worked at for a few months fresh out of high school. He addresses whomever seems to be receiving folks at the minute.
"Hello, I was told by Marco that I should come here for a.. a post-cryo checkup? So here I am."

The reception room of medical was rather impressive and beautiful in its minimalistic and efficent design. This was the first thing Edel noticed. The second one was the rushed atmosphere and the scared look of a few nurses. However, she ignored that impression, considering it just fruit of her being paranoid. She approached the reception desk. "Hi, I was just woken up by mistake from cryostasis. The AI told me to come here."

She thanked the nurse with a small smile and nod, taking a random seat. Worry clouded her mind. Maybe her gut was right? Maybe something was wrong in here. Just as she was resigning to a few minutes of boredom mixed with anxiety, the other woman from the cryo chambers entered. A small smile appeared onher face, but it was quickly hidden by her hair as she bowed her head again. I wish I had a gram of her confidence. She looked back up and waved with a small hint of hesitation at Raven. "Hi... Marco said you're...Raven? Did I get your name right?"

The fact that a dead man had just escaped medical by busting through the door of a containment room and then sprinting past security and out in to the ship was something Drago had never dreamed of when he joined the mission. It brought back all those old movies and legends from his homeland. Not bothering to take off his hazmat suit, having truthfully not even thought about it Drago followed the nurse and Hans into the examination room, "Nurse, if you please draw a vial of blood from Mr. Fisher. Close to wound and another on an opposite extremity."

Turning to Hans "I'll go check these out, hopefully the wound didn't come into contact with any of the active pathogen."

Colonel Walter Genassi looked around the waiting room. At least five civilians were there, and most of them looked worried. He figured he had to do something, especially since the two women were already questioning Marco for answers.
He grabbed a datapad off the front desk, checking for the names of the new entries.

"Good afternoon all," he started, his voice as soothing as possible, "My name is Walter Genassi. Colonel, retired, and now chief medical engineer. Call me doc." He gestured for all the civilians to come somewhat closer.
"Lets see, you are... Danny Chambers, Eric Whitechapel, Richard Thornby, Edel Thyssen and Raven Haywood if I am not mistaken. Mr. Chambers, you have already been seen by a nurse I believe, so has Mr. Whitechapel?"
He tapped on the dataslate a few times, nodding.
"The nurses will come for the rest of you shortly, no worries."

Genassi pulled up a chair and sat down, leaning in a bit closer so all five could hear him well.
"As you may have noticed with all those armed amrines running around, we have had a bit of an issue just now. A very sick and troubled man assaulted one of my medics, and ran out on his treatment. Because we fear he could be a threat to people we had to contact security. I'm sure Lieutenant Maxwell and her team will have things under control soon enough. Meanwhile, since we will have to wait for a moment untill we get the all clear, can I get you something to drink?"

Re: Medical Facilities

The calming demeanour of the doctor did wonders with Edel's nerves, but a hum of worry stubbornly persisted. She listened closely to his report. A patient escaped containment. Was he affected with whatever illness required a biohazard suit? Now he was among other people in the ship. She zoned out, playing in her mind the possible scenarios that were to come, so when she heard the word 'broom' and saw one of the other people stuck in the waiting room wink at her, confusion completely engulfed her mind.

She looked at the others, trying to find a clue about what bits of conversation she missed, but what they were talking about did not help at all. Drinks? Brooms, winks and drinks. She decided to just smile noncommittally at the broom man. It seemed like a safe option.

As the conversation continued, Edel raised hesitantly her finger. "Excuse me doc, I have a question too. We saw a man with a biohazard suit. Could it be in any way related to the very sick patient that has escaped?"

Genassi paused, thoughtfully.
"I think it was his instincts taking over and him going in serve and protect mode. No, the runaway patient is no problem, other than possible agression."

"Now, to adress some of the other questions..." Doc grinned, honestly amused. "No, we do not have rum. I believe our machine over there gives coffee and tea." He shrugged.
"Concerning why you are awake... a glitch probably. Thats why most of us are awake. Its what saved the ship. The AI woke up some random people due to security protocols being hacked I believe. For what I know it still does."

Drago's equipment is quick with its answer. Fischer's blood shows no signs of activated tri-cellular organisms. They are as dormant as ever. White blood cell count however was at least ten times higher than normal, and they seemed hyperactive, attacking any and every discrepancy in the blood. Any but the triple-celled organisms that was.

***

Hans however has a discovery of his own. Despite the wound being small, it had been rather deep, but now, only an hour after he had suffered the scratch, the wound had almost healed. It seemed his body had shown a hyper-reaction to the wound, and accelerated the clotting and subsequent closing of the skin.
At this rate, in an hour there would no longer be any wound visible.

Addison led Mariko to the exam room and sat her on the bed, gathering some syringes.
"I wish I had better news, but no, we didn't fall 70 lightyears short."
She jabbed the needle in, drawing a small vial of blood.
"I don't have all that much information myself, we only woke up yesterday. The ship's engines malfunctioned, causing the AI to wake up people to fix it. Random people, because someone hacked the systems when we were at Aplha Centauri. One of them was an engineer, Dr. Cornell, and he managed to direct several others in the repairs. Thank god for that by the way, or we would all have been dead by now. Concerning your questions though... We were sent away from Alpha Centauri by an unknown group of terrorists, and are now in the middle of nowhere, nearly 80 lightyears from earth. If earth is still there that is. The ship AI is still gathering information on the fate of the planet, but what we know you can look up in your appartment later. You are a pilot I believe? That will mean your cabin is in the barracks section."
Withdrawing the needle she put a bandaid on the pinpoint wound, then handed Mariko two pills.
"Take these, and if you feel any nausea, come back at once. You should be fine though, Cryo disorientation usually last only a few hours."

Mariko swallows the pills and hops down off the exam table.

"Thanks Doc. I'm going to get presentable and report to the Bridge to see the Captain."

As the medical facility slowly calms down, and most crew have finally gotten their check ups, Addison finds a moment to wind down herself. SHutting down the medical droid at the reception desk for a while, she takes the seat herself, scanning through the records and waiting on what is to come.
She hopes Genassi, Fisher, Urzica and nurse Miller are okay in Recreational, going over her actions treating Patterson again. There was nothing she could have done differently. Nothing she should have done differently. No man ever died that quickly , and in such a gruesome way, from a simple radiation poisoning...

He notices the woman, Addison, at the desk with the reception droid turned off. He strides toward but steers to the side of the desk. His tone was edgy.

"Appigan, Medic. Just unthawed. What happened to the droid?"

His head tilted to be sure to watch the lady's hands.

Studied hands quickly draw a vail of blood without Appigan even feeling as much as a pinprick. Connoly shrugs.
"Marco woke a few of us up yesterday morning, after a contingency plan kicked in that most probably saved our lives. We reached Alpha Centauri, 115 years ago."
She paused to let that news setttle in.
"While there, a hack in the AI programming caused only a predetermined four people to wake up. They took over the ship, stole some stuff and a shuttle craft, and sent us on our way to a black hole. We probably would all have died if one of the fusion storage containers had not been full. Because of this MArco woke up what it thought was the engine crew. Due to the hack, it was just random people. Luckily one of them was a civil engineer that knows a thing or two about fusion engines. I was amongst those few to be woken up. So was Cpl. Patterson. We lost him today. A good man died to radiation poisoning..." For a while she stares in the distance, fighting to hold back tears. Then she manned up.
Storing the vail she handed Appigan his pills. "Take these, and come back if you feel nausea or disorientation. For more information, ask either Major Ascott or the Captain. The investigation is still in full swing."

Appigan listens intently. His eyes grew wide at the excessive century. His face then tightening at the mention of mutiny.

"To be honest sound like they had things started before we launched. A release delay with the saboteurs as a backup. Pre-launch we talked alot about possible scenarios. I was mighty pissed when I woke up like I did. Not because you did anything wrong. More that a lot had to have gone wrong.

The good news is we are alive. You are alive. The ship sounds like it is back under legal authority. Hey you did good. Remember as medicals we didn't cause the injuries that led to death. We are just a chance to reverse it."

He took the pills.

"Hey, as a suggestion you might want to auto-run status checks on the cryo bays or ask security to alert you if motion sensors are activity. Both would be signs of others waking up."

Sliding off the examination bed he starts to leave the looks over his shoulder.

"Suppose I should advise you too. I'm a combat medic. Battle field trauma experienced. Plus I was checked out on shuttle flights to run ambulances or cargo runs. I expect you and I will be meeting up. After I sort out with the marines, Major Ascott you said, I'll try to get some time to come back here and help you with inventory."

Listening for any reply he heads out.

Lisa followed the little orange arrows to the medical facilities. It wasn't that hard to find. The structure of the ship, she imagined, had to make a certain amount of sense. She'd study the layout later. But for now, she knew she had to get checked out. She'd been asleep for over a hundred years, wasn't it? Probably a little overdue for a checkout.

She stepped inside, noting the medical droid at the desk and the general hospital-feel of the place. Well, they got that general unpleasantness right at least. "Hello. I just came out of stasis and need to get my post-freeze checkup. My name is Lisa Sky." Lisa figured that just addressing the droid and giving that relevant information should get her going in the right direction.

Addison sat back at the front desk, actually enjoying the quiet hours for a while. Besides Appigan she had had few arrivals, and so far she liked it that way. It was a lot different from that morning, when nearly 500 soldiers had been woken up and in need of check-ups.
Maybe the Polo would find some peace now.

Then she heard the ship intercomm.

CS-3? Found? Was anyone alive still? Could they be?
After all, Addison had survived 115 years in cryo, maybe the people on Vasco DaGama had done so too?
Could it be? Could her dad still be alive?

The woman standing in front of her startled her a bit, dragging her away from her thoughts.

"Oh hello Lisa. I'm doctor Addison Connolly. I'll get you sorted out in no time. If you would follow me please, we will do some bloodwork and I'll get you a couple pills to counter the cryo toxins, and you are good to go."

She lead Lisa to exam room 2. Somehow instinctively she kept avoiding room 1. Thats where Patterson had been. Poor Patterson.

Following a routine she had practiced all day long Addison drew a vial of blood from Lisa, then gave her two pills. "Take these, they counteract any side effects of the cryo. if you start feeling disoriented or nauseous, come back at once. My advice is to get some food in you now. Your body has been dormant for 115 years, some fresh fuel will work."

She figured she needed to follow her own advice too as her stomach growled. Yet food had to wait. She really needed to talk to the captain, or Ascott. If there was a chance dad was out there, they needed to know.
