Medical Facilities

Addison leaned back, taking a deep breath. She gave Colt another smile, this one somewhat shaky. "Good work. Thanks for pitching in. There's a shower room and some clean jumpsuits that way," she pointed to the back of the medical bay. Her own jeans and sweater were ruined, but she seemed not to notice, focusing instead on Troy and his vital signs. "I don't like this. He shouldn't be going into organ failure this soon, but there's no toxin in his system that could account for it. I guess I way underestimated just how much radiation he was exposed to." She sounded upset, but was trying to keep herself from falling apart over the miscalculation.

Still covered in blood, she looked up and saw Jennifer waiting for her. "Be right with you," she called, pulling off her lab coat. She quickly washed her face and hands, then stepped behind a privacy screen to strip off her clothes and pull on a set of scrubs. There was still blood in her hair, but there was nothing she could do about that just now. "What can I help you with?" she called over her shoulder as she reattached a monitor that had fallen off during Troy's convulsions.

Lt. Maxwell looked at the Doc.  "I'm investigating what has happened to the Marco Polo.  One on the things I'm looking into is a murder.  I discovered the mummified body on the bridge just after I awoke.  It should be transported here."

"This is what I need.  You're the closest medical person I have to a forensic pathologist.  Your medical records are probably restricted to medical personnel only.  I need you to check the body's DNA against the five thousand medical record you have for an identification.  I also have two samples of skin cells taken from a crime scene.  Run the DNA from these two samples against your medical data base as well.  I should have additional samples for you this afternoon."

Jen took a deep breath, then let it out.  She voice got quieter, flatter.  "SGT Troy Patterson is one of mine.  I know you are doing your best.  But, just in case he doesn't make it, I want to know what killed him.  Then, I'll find out who killed him."

Colt returned the smile, though with a sense of unease. The only thing that seemed worse to Colt than seizing and vomiting blood, was nothing. Nothing was hard to treat."Of course." Colt replied with a nod. "Could it be a toxin that the system couldn't account for? We've been in space for a hundred years, and apparently there was some sketchy stuff going on for the duration. Could a new toxin have somehow developed? Or...or could the ship have come into contact with anything that could have allowed foreign substances on board?" Colt asked, not sure what the likelihood of any of that would have been.

He dipped into the shower room and quickly stripped off the nasty jumpsuit. He was thankful that he had managed to avoid getting the puke on his pristine shoes. He definitely had quick feet that was for sure. He briefly rinsed off in the shower, though realizing he would have to wait until later to really clean his hair, he mostly just scrubbed the fresh puke off his hands and face. He then put on a fresh jumpsuit and his shoes and emerged from the room.

The bloodwork on Patterson comes back soon enough, the medical facilities computers making quick work of it.
To Connolly it looks pretty much as you could expect from a radiation poisoning victim, the severe radiation attacking Patterson's cells at molecular levels.
That however does not explain the speed at which his body is shutting down.
As the results pop up, the computer instantly flags the results. Big red warning signs start blinking on the screen.

Warning. Unknown substance detected

A chill runs down her spine.

Slowly moving away from medical to avoid being sick Mikoto runs into a burly husk of a man in uniform. His friendly face calms her down a bit as he casually stops her in her tracks.
"You look a bit under the weather dear. A bit pale. Come, lets get you to medical."
Gently coercing her ahead of him he continues, "I'm Captain Dorn. You must be... don't say it... our resident japanese superstar, Miss Mishida. Welcome to the awakened. You will find most people still asleep, as we are running on skeleton crew for now. Once you have the doctor check you out, make sure you visit Jan VanderBeek. He's mostly in charge of civilian affairs, he will get you a place to stay and some usefull activities. It'll be a while before we wake up the other people."

Leading Mikoto gently back to medical ahead of him Dorn enters the reception area of the hospital facilities. There he presses the button to indicate he has arrived, and yells into the hallway.
"Captain here, you needed me?"

Lt. Maxwell stepped into an alcove to answer Lt. Shadow.  "Yes, I know about the missing dropship.  That is how the perps got off of the ship.  Do not touch anything.  You are at a crime scene.  I need to get down there to see if there are any salvageable fingerprints to identify the individuals involved."

Jen noticed that the Captain had arrived when she stepped back into the main part of the reception area.  "The Doctor is currently involved with a medical emergency involving Sgt. Patterson, Sir.  You might want to consider waking additional members of the medical staff to assist her."

Addison hustled up to the Captain and nodded. "What she said," she said, pointing to Jennifer. "My kingdom for a nurse, at this point. I've already told Cornell to triple check all the radiation suits and take Troy's out of commision, and I'm doing everything I can for the radiation, but I just found something new in his blood. An unknown toxin of some sort. I'm going to step up the fluids and see if I can flush his system, but it doesn't look good." To Colt, she added, "As for you, I'm afraid you're stuck with me until I can clear you -- you were exposed to way too much blood."

She was already moving before she finished speaking, heading to the cooler and tossing Colt a bottle of water. She then went to the back room where she rummaged around frantically, finally emerging triumphant. "Activated charcoal," she explained. "It's probably overkill, because I strongly doubt you swallowed anything, but put my mind at ease and take it anyway." She took two large, chewable tablets from the box and handed them to Colt. "They taste vile, but it'll be over soon. I'll check your blood in about fifteen minutes, see if you picked anything up." She'd have to check her own blood as well, obviously, but her first priority seemed to be Colt and Troy, not herself.

"Marco, wake all military staff with a medical designation. Have them go through the protocols and report to medical at once. They are needed. Also, wake Doc Genassi. He needs to get his hospital running properly."

Dorn waits for confirmation by M4RC0, then turns to Connolly.
"Good work so far doctor. I can give you the military part of the hospital. We are not yet waking civilians at this time, even though the systems seem to think otherwise every now and then." He nods in the direction of Mikoto.

"Do what you can for Patterson. However, put yourself up as a priority. Can't save anyone if you get sick yourself. The rest of the staff should be here in a couple of hours."

"I do typically avoid swallowing bloody puke, for more reasons than one. But if it puts you at ease, I'll eat the...charcoal?" Colt said, taking tablet and the water bottle. He put it in his mouth, and made a strange face at the taste. He quickly tried to wash it down with the water, though there was no immediately getting rid of that sensation. "Well, since I'm already here and have already been exposed, I'm free to continue being your nurse until you clear me." Colt said with a smile after he finished the water. "Though if you want to spend more time with me, next time just ask if I want to hang out on the rec dec or something. Quarantines are so cliche." Colt joked with a smirk, hoping to ease the stress level the doctor was under at least a little bit.

Colt looked to the Captain and the other newcomer to the Med Bay. He gave them a friendly smile and listened, taking note of their words. There was something strange going on here, and while Colt was likely not going to be briefed directly, as he was just a driver, he was just as curious as everyone else about what was going on with the ship.

"Don't knock it. I've seen charcoal fix all kinds of poisoning situations." Addison bit her lower lip, deep in thought. Could it be something that grew and mutated on the ship itself over the last century-and-then-some? If that were the case, everyone should be getting sick, not just Troy. It had to be something that was in his suit, or in the meds she had given him. But the meds had been sealed, and how would a radiation suit get poisoned?

Still thinking in circles, Addison went to check Troy's vitals and hang another bag of saline solution. She turned the drip up so that it would flush his system faster.

"Well, you are the expert here. I just don't think that charcoal is made to be consumed. That's all I'm saying." Colt replied with a chuckle. He leaned back against the wall, looking at Troy and Addison. "Could it have been something with the blood? Could something have, like, developed in it while we were in our iceboxes?" Colt asked, trying to think of something, but stumped for logical explanations.

Dressed in a white lab coat, stethoscope around his neck, a stately man comes walking through the main doors of the hospital facility. He is clearly wearing combat boots and a military uniform, colonel's insignia on his scrubs and the bulge of a pistol showing through his coat. His face though is kind, friendly, and his voice calm as he speaks slowly, almost a whisper.
"Ah, home."
He looks around the reception area at the people there, a look of wonder in his eyes.
"Oh, hello, I didn't realise we had guests already. The staff will be here shortly, so you will have to wait for a little bit to recieve your check-ups."

He then notices Addison.
"Aha. I'm sorry, I assumed no medical staff was awake yet. You must be one of the civilian doctors. My name is Walter Genassi. They say I'm in charge of this place. But since you are here already, I take it you know better than me what we need to do at this time..." He rolls up his sleeves, revealing two fully tattooed arms. Prominently shown is a special forces tattoo. "So, first things first. Who might you be doctor... And more importantly... Where do you need me?"

Addison was many things, but "too proud" was not one of them. She smiled gratefully, if weakly, at the Colonel and gestured at Troy. "Troy Patterson, exposed to radiation and an unknown toxin, treated so far with standard radiation suite and aggressive fluids. Colt," she gestured at Colt, "was exposed to Troy's blood, treated prophylactically with charcoal to absorb any poison. And I'm Addison Connolly, exposed to the same blood as Colt and so far untreated. Which I will attend to now, with your permission." Before joining up with the Marco, Addison had worked with several volunteer operations, some of them in war zones. She had some experience with military doctors despite never having served herself.

"I assume this young lady here needs a post cryo checkup? I'll get to that then. You can update me once you have treated yourself."

He guided Mikoto to an empty examination room, gave her two pills and took some blood.
"You are good to go girl. If you feel nausea or get feverish, come back to see us."

Sending the rockstar on her way Doc Genassi then went to check on Patterson.

Certain there was not much else for him to do in medical, and convinced it was in good hands with Connolly and now Genassi, the captain figured he had best return to the bridge.
"Keep me updated on anything unusual, and if Patterson's situation changes, let me know at once. Keep up the good work doctors."

As he left the hospital facilities, he encountered several nurses and a few other doctors just coming in. Within a few minutes the hospital was working at the minimal required strength.

She saw a older man escorting her back into that hellhole that was the infermary and she gave any excuse possible to not being taken there. “Wait I feel fine!, I don't want to be close to that sick fellow I value my health” she groaned as he had no convincing otherwise so she just thought of running away as soon as she could. When they got to med bay thankfully it was all quick enough to take two pills and some blood before being allowed to leave the area. She sighed as she quickly left the room not wanting to take two more seconds to be there especially with a sick man inside.

Once inside, Micaela remained in the entry way, trying not to stare at the automaton at the central reception desk. Under normal circumstances she would expect the medical staff to be notified of her pending arrival by Marco, but she was interested in testing the extent of his malware corruption, and even simple, seemingly inconsequential details could be useful. So she quietly waited to see how her arrival would be handled.

"Captain." Colt acknowledged with a nod as Dorn turned and walked out. He smiled at the hands on doctor, then turned and saw the flood of nurses pouring in. "Well the cavalry has arrived." Colt joked with a chuckle. "So is the quarantine lifted? Am I free to go grab some chow now? I would literally kill for a burger and fries." Colt now looked a little out of place in the mess of medical personnel that were now taking over in the area. The disheveled nature of his hair contrasted with his pristine uniform in a way that didn't make him look like just a patient, however he certainly did not have the same presence as a doctor or a nurse. He looked as if he'd just jumped into the middle of the chaos, though that lined up with the truth fairly well.

Amidst the mass of movement, Colt also noticed one woman standing in the waiting area of the medical facility. She seemed like she was waiting for something different, though Colt was not sure what she was looking for and just gave it a shrug. He was sure someone would be with her relatively shortly, once they had set up the facility and gotten it fully staffed and operational.

With the arrival of the Colonel, Addison was free to stop and treat herself, which she did, taking the same vile chew tabs she had given Colt. That should soak up anything she might have swallowed; anything airborne or transmitted by touch would have been scrubbed away in the shower. "You should be good to go," she told Colt. "But come back if you feel even the tiniest bit out of sorts." Seeing him out, she noticed the new arrival. "Hello. Can I help you?"

"Hold it right there doctor," Genassi states simply, a friendly smile adorning his face. With a firm hand he guides Addison away from the newcomer and towards the exit of the hospital. At the sliding doors he faces her, looking deep into her eyes, making sure he is not be misunderstood.
"You did good doctor, but I am guessing that since you got here you have at best eaten a protein bar, if any at all, and maybe what, one coffee? You get yourself to the barracks, get some food in your belly, take a few minutes to adjust. Doctor's orders. We have things under control here for now. I'm sure we can manage half an hour without you." He grins, his eyes twinkling. Yet there is no possible way he can be persuaded to let her stay, she knows by instinct.

Having said what he wanted to say he then turns to Micaela Nieves waiting by the door.
"Good afternoon young lady. Judging by the grey jumpsuit you have come for your post-cryo check-up. If you'd please wait in exam room three a nurse will be with you  in a moment to get some blood and get you the after-sleep pills."

"Thank you, doctor." she responded while she considered the implication of his words. Neither doctor seemed to be expecting her, but as part of its security protocols Marco should have notified medical that she was coming. Was she being paranoid, or was there sabotage in the security protocols?

Moving into exam room three Micaela took a few deep breaths and tried to keep her thoughts under control. Or, at least, constructive. Was there anything she could do to help?
