Captain's quarters

Decorated to look and feel like the belly of a submarine, Captain Blake Dorn does most of his business here. Computers give him easy access to all the information he needs while large screens keep him updated on the affairs of the ship. His simple office contains a desk made from a bulkhead of the U-96, while the three chairs around it all come from the original Titanic. Dorn takes pride in the items he has collected over the years.

Seated at his desk, playing around with his coffee mug, Dorn ponders the situation. Sabotage. On his tub.
Unacceptable.

Marco, send a message to Lt. Jennifer Maxwell. Have her come here as soon as she is done in the conference hall.

From:  Conference Room

Lieutenant Jennifer Maxwell stood outside of the Captain's Quarters.  She tried to shake that irrational unease that started way back in her life when she was first called out of class to go to The Principal's Office.  She knew that she wasn't in trouble, but that is what makes irrational things irrational.

Jen straightened the seams and the zipper of her black jumpsuit.  She brushed a speck of imaginary lint from her sleeve, then made sure that all of the fasteners on her duty belt were securely closed... again.  Finally, she knocked on His door.  "Lt. Maxwell reporting as requested, Sir."

Dorn looked up from his screens, still playing with his coffee mug.
"Ah yes, acting captain Maxwell. Sit down please. Relax." he gestured for one of the old Titanic lounge chairs at his desk. He then stood up and put his mug under the coffee machine. "You want a cup?"

Not waiting for an answer he poured himself another cup, and prepared one for Jennifer. As he sat down he stared her in the eyes for a moment.

"Good job keeping my tub running Lieutenant. I cannot thank you enough. Keep up the good work and you might become an actual captain soon enough. Now, why I wanted to talk to you first...
Marco tells me he has been malfunctioning, something to do with sabotage. Can you tell me what we know so far?"

Jen took the offered seat, but left the coffee alone for the moment.  "I'm still in the preliminary stages of the investigation, Sir, but here is what I have so far..."  Jen related finding the body on the bridge and the note about the four pods.  She omitted finding the .22 in her report, since it wasn't essential to the case.  She related the crisis with the attempted destruction attempt with the program calling itself "The End" and how Sgt. Germaine circumvented the process, which then began to delete itself.  Jen explained that the four saboteurs has disrupted several data files like video surveillance and pod storage records to hide their identities, but she had several other avenues of investigation to pursue.

"... And that is where I am right now.  I plan on sweeping the pods for trace elements like discarded skin cells to try for a DNA match.  I also plan on sweeping the areas where the four, then three, perps stole their supplies for trace evidence."  She took a sip of the rapidly cooling coffee to ease the strain on her voice from talking so long.

Dorn sat in silence for a while. When he finally spoke his voice sounded stern, committed.

"I will not let anyone mess around with my tub. Get to the bottom of all this, use whatever resources needed. If anyone responsible for this sabotage is still onboard, I need to know, and they will have a one way ticket out the airlock.
Again, good work so far acting captain. Thanx. Dismissed."

Lt. Maxwell rose to her feet.  "I'm on it, Sir."  She didn't salute since she was there in an official capacity, but she turned smartly and exited the room.  Jen knew that she had a lot of work to do and it was time to get back to the office.

Captain's quarters

Getting back to his quarters captain Dorn stands staring outside his window for a long while, glad to know his crew is doing what they should already, just a half day out of cryo. Already they have diverted a major crisis, something he could not have handled better himself, and they were hard at work trying to figure out what happened as they all slept. They made him proud. As a man, and as their captain.
Getting himself another cup of coffee and some protein bars he sat down at his bulkhead desk and quickly ordered M4RC0 to send a message to Blake Germaine.
It was time to do another few talks with some crew.

After asking Marco whether the captain was still up and in his quarters, Blake hits the entry chime on the captain's quarters. He won't be sleeping, he was woken far later than Blake.

"Come in," the captain's voice is calm, soothing. Sitting at his desk one cannot help but wonder how the man ever managed to get around a submarine. A bit too tall, a bit too much weight, perhaps a bit slow, he comes across more like a cuddly uncle than a weathered submarine commander.
"Please, sit. Sgt. Germaine, you have been working on the ship AI for most of this day, trying to find out what the hell happened. What do we know so far?"

"Well, sir, we don't know much more than when you were woken. There was a program that attempted to cleanse the ship with fusion gasses, but that seems to have deleted itself when we restarted the fusion reactor. Marco's also seemed to clear up somewhat, although that may be only the low power situation being rectified. I keep encountering fragments of something that ran previously, log entries that indicate something strange went on."

"However, currently I'm actually working on discovering where we are in space, using a map of blue giant systems I created as a reference guide. This will likely take a few more hours of tomorrow."

"Let me see. When I was first awakened, Marco said his programming had been corrupted, and that he was trying to wake you to deal with the problem when he woke us. That might indicate that lower level systems were corrupted as well. Which would make sense, if you have total access to the system and intend to corrupt it you'd change whatever was the simplest way to accomplish a particular goal. So, there might well be evidence still around in the subprocessors"

"Actually, I had an idea in the last hour or so about the investigation project. If it were possible to add clearances to various subsectors to my computer id, I might well be able to get further, faster."

The captain seemed to ponder Blake's request for a moment.
"What is that idea then, and what clearances would you need?"

"Oh, I see. I meant that adding clearances would be the plan. Currently I have access to all engine systems, but I would like access to the cryo system, so that I can look for computer logs, and if you consider it wise, to Marco himself."
