Looking like he hadn't slept all night Stephen Cornell dragged himself into the gym, reluctant. Being a civilian he knew he had to get in shape like the rest of them, but without a proper military background he had a very real fear it was going to be very hard on him.
Seeing only one other person yet he dropped a small bag on a bench near the wall and took out a bottle of water. Sipping it he waited.

Following in right after Cornell Major Tom Ascott looked a lot fresher. Wearing olive drab shorts and shirt, on standard white sneakers, he came prepared. So did the eight marines in his wake. As one they fell in line, waiting for his orders. Seeing he was early, it was after all only 05.45, he decided to start with some laps around the barracks Gym, the marines in tow.

Mumbling something incoherent about a bad knee to doctor Genassi, Captain Dorn trots into the gym, dragging a reluctant bridge crew with him. Technicians mostly, they look like he is sending them off to hell itself, all the while nestling himself comfortably on the bench next to Cornell. They hesitate, but when he orders them to do some laps they comply.
Genassi quickly joins the marines in their laps as well, warming up for what he expects to be a tough first training since waking up.

One of the technicians, wearing a worn Manchester City shirt, notices Shadow kicking a ball about and joins him in a simple contest of one-on-one soccer.
Slowly more and more people trickle in.

Gym

<< From: Nieves' quarters

The sight that greeted Micaela once she had arrived in the gym caused her to roll her eyes; though a moment later she regretted it. The regimented military life didn't sit well with her, and the thought of running laps first thing in the morning seemed more like mental conditioning than physical conditioning, but she supposed it was probably for the best.

As long as they were all on the same side she wanted them prepared and ready for anything that might come at them. But she found it hard to not wonder what would happen if the guys with the guns decided that they weren't on the same side as those without.

The woman didn't suppress the concern or dwell on it, she simply let it rattle around in her head until it was spent and another took its place. Over the course of 10 minutes she considered no less than the state of Marco, how angry Lou was going to get when Micaela called her Lou to her face, whether she should actually do some exercise of her own, whether wearing the same clothing two days in a row would count as a fashion faux pas in this brave new world, if there were places on Marco that Marco was programmed to be blind to, if one of these sweating young men would get her knocked up for the propagation of the human species and what kind of mother she would be.

Not might be, would be. She thought she was okay with the notion that she didn't really have a choice in the matter (or more appropriately, that by choosing to hitch a ride on the Marco Polo she had chosen to help with the whole continuation of the human race thing), that the survival of the species depended on the diversity of the gene-pool, but as a shudder passed through her it was clear that she still had some emotional issues to work through. This thought she did actively chase away, focusing on the gym around her and relieved to find that the meeting was about to start.

The marine replied with a grin.
"Just a fan. Played some amateur football for Blackburn back in highschool, but thats about it. Nothing fancy." He gives the ball a good kick, sending it flying.

Meanwhile the last marines trickle in, amongst them those assigned to security. The flight engineers show up at exactly 06.00, with Kong-we being the last to enter, busy in a conversation with VanderBeek.

As Ascott stops his men and lets them stretch, captain Dorn hoist his burly frame upright and looks around. Doing a quick count in his head he is convinced most people that should be present are, then he walks to the center of the gym so everybody can gather round.

"People, good morning. Lieutenant Maxwell told me yesterday she was going to put some of the men through their paces, and Major Ascott and myself figured that would be a good thing for all of us, so thats why I wanted you all out here at this unchristly hour."
He paces up and down a bit, checking for reactions.
"Before I hand all of you over to her, I think it is as good a time as any for a general update on our situation. So listen carefully, I'm not going to repeat myself.
The reactor is working fine after the hard rezet yesterday, and the engines are powered and running. Despite a minor setback yesterday when a drone exploded in one of the exhausts there are no problems hindering us from getting moving. At 09.00 this morning we will be setting out, and if all goes as planned we will be entering a possibly habitable sector of planets in a little over four days.
The investigation concerning our malfunctioning AI and the theft of a dropship and some gear is still ongoing, there is not much I can tell you there.
Cpl. Patterson's condition has not changed, he is being kept in an artificial coma to keep him stable. Research to foreign cells in his blood is ongoing, there is no cause for alarm. They seem to activate only in radiation."

He paused, waiting for the soft murmering to die down again.
"Now, I will hand you over to lieutenant Maxwell for a nice workout. I'm sure she will get you all warmed up in no time."
Dorn gave a casual nod to Jennifer as he made his way to the bench and sat down again, grinning.

Jenni walked over to stand before the assembled crew.  "Thank you, Captain.  I'll try not to break them this morning."

She smiled as she addressed the assembly.  "Good morning, people.  My name is Lieutenant Maxwell.  Since I don't know your fitness levels, we're going to do half of one of my light day workouts this morning.  Since we've never worked together before, Here is what I expect from each and every one of you.  We're going to..."  Maxwell explained each step of what she planned to do.

Warm up with a series of exercises... head circles, arm circles, arm/body twists, torso twists, and leg stretches

Jog in place for three minutes to get the blood moving

Push ups – performing 25 on the palms of your hands.
"And we don't do girl pushups here.  Keep your backs straight.  Of course, if you want to impress me, you can do what I'm going to do..."

Knuckle push ups – perform 25 on your fists. Thumbs should face each other.

Sit ups – pair up and alternate with legs interlocked at the ankle, 25 repetitions

Squats – bodyweight squats keeping the back vertical, for 50 repetitions

Leg raises – lie on floor hands behind your head and feet together, then lift feet upwards to about a foot from the floor, hold for a ten count, then lower for a ten count, 20 reps

Squat thrusts – From a push up position jump both feet forward, so that you end up in a crouching position with palms still on the floor. Return feet back out again.  25 reps.

Mountain climbers – these are a bit like squat thrusts, but instead of both feet jumping forward, you perform a running motion with your feet, bringing each knee forward one at a time.  25 sets.

"If you have any real questions, ask 'em now.  You might not have any breath later."

For the marines the workout is light, and they quickly go through the motions completing the routine in short order.
Most of the technical staff however was not nearly as fanatic. Getting through the push-ups wasn't too much trouble for most, but when the required knuckles had to come into play some of them failed. By the time they ended the routine, half of them were completely out of breath, one engineer even flat on his back trying to regain his bearings. All of them had to agree they had to practice a lot more.

Micaela's eye roll this time was less abashed. She didn't like getting jerked around or being on the receiving end of authority figures playing power games. If she had known about the wake up call and the exercise routine she wouldn't have had a problem with either, but this was different. This was grade A certified bulls***. The whole thing disgusted her and she was tempted to walk out.

But she didn't. She wasn't going to gain anything by being defiant in the face of 20 minutes of conditioning that she probably needed anyway. No, she didn't rebel... but that didn't mean she wasn't going to remember.

The woman wasn't able to fall in line immediately. She had to pull her laptop bag up and over her head before setting it aside, then she had to perform a bit of wardrobe magic by slipping out of her larger undershirt without taking off her smaller overshirt. Once she was done she was in far better condition for the work out.

As for the exercises themselves, Micaela at least finished them. Her conditioning left something to be desired, but she still exercised regularly... well, maybe semi-regularly. Some of the exercises Lou had barked out were outdated and inefficient, but, again, playing the rebel at this point wasn't productive. So she did as she was instructed, to the best of her ability, and hoped she looked like a good little trooper.

Once she was done she stood with her hands on her hips, sweating freely and trying to catch her breath while she looked around for something that might provide some water.

Not even sweating the Major himself hands out bottles of vitamin-water. Meanwhile he has his marines do ten more laps around the gym for good measure.

While nodding appreciatively to Jennifer Maxwell he then dismisses the engineers and bridge crew, just now noticing the captain had snuck out of the gym entirely.
He couldn't really blame Dorn. The man was getting older, had worked his entire life inside a small metal tube, and had a bad knee, or so he said. He would have to talk to him about setting examples though. Perhaps next time it would be better if the captain didn't come here at all, so he couldn't demotivate the crew that clearly had trouble keeping up with such simple routines.

Well, they couldn't all be marines, he figured.

Were things different now? Where the people that had tried to kill them still here? Would they try again?

"I guess that's what I'm trying to find out." she said softly to herself. Or, more precisely, to find out if Marco was going to try to kill them. And it was time to get on with it.

None of the marines look familiar to Kray. Not surprisingly, as he mostly flew above them instead of walking amongst them, and the large lot of them were likely not even australian.
They seem like a capable bunch though, most of them bearing patches of several units of special forces all over the world. Kray sees at least three SAS guys, not counting the major, two Spetsnaz, a man with a GSG-9 patch, two SEALs and a US army Ranger, a dutch Airmobile commando, an Angolese GAE corpsman, an Irish Ranger and a Ghurka. Ascott has certainly selected a bunch of capable fighting men and women, and they all seem ready do battle at a moment's notice.
What surprises Shadow most though is how well they operate together, how tight knit they seem to be.

Kray also notices Hansel amongst them, wearing a marine uniform like the rest of them. His patch however clearly shows he was once german airforce mechanics. His commanding officer Kong-We is nowhere to be seen.

All the marines took a step closer, knowing what was coming and not wanting to miss a thing.

Ascott returned to the marines who were all expecting a more rigorous training, having just about warmed up. To their surprise however the Major had other plans.
"Listen up maggots!" he started, using his favorite name for his troops. "Captain has informed me we will be setting sail at 0900. That means we will be travelling around, and as such we can encounter any number of surprises."
He paced up and down the line of troops.
"I don't know about you maggots, but I hate surprises!"

As one all marines responded. Sir, Yes Sir!

"To make sure we are up to all those surprises, I have asked Marco to provide each and every one of you with a detailed map of all 215 gun positions on board this ship. All 215 should be cleaned and prepped for any eventuality. That means clean as a baby's ass, and just as shiny! That means loaded! That means armed! That means combat ready! Do you get that maggots?"

Sir, Yes Sir!

"Good, then get to work! Dismissed"

Re: Gym

If the Major's tirade had any effect on Micaela, she didn't show it. And Lou's follow up seemed to have even less of an impact (if that was even possible). The captain's emergency authority, which would certainly be in effect at the moment given the circumstances, granted him the power of martial law. So they could legally lock her up. But that kind of thing would have consequences down the line, and would complicate an already complicated situation.

It would come down to the legality of the actions outside of martial law. Since she had received instructions from someone in the chain of command, in this case Staff Sergeant Blake Germaine, they didn't have a valid charge to stick on her. And being snide with a senior officer also wasn't a civilian crime. If she was incarcerated for either outside of martial law it would be illegal, and once the civilians woke up en masse they would see to raising a stink about it since they wouldn't want the same fate to befall them.

No, the worst thing they could do would be to retract her consultation status and order her to stay away from all active investigations. She didn't particularly want that to happen, but she wasn't going to be another grunt. She needed to set expectations up front. The only choice they really had was to consider what she could bring to the investigation versus the disruption her attitude would cause.

Micaela gave Lou a bit of a head start before she gathered her things to return to her quarters. Following the instructions given to her, she ended up back at security around a quarter to 8:00.

There are several people in the gym, mostly working out on the assorted training devices. Some others are doing laps around the central field, where two men are playing basketball.

Re: Gym

Marco describes Colt Jordan as a 25 year old caucasian male, 1.79 meters tall, about 70 kg. Cropped dark hair. Distinguishable tattoos of hotrods on his left arm.

One of the two basketball players fits the description.

Colt stares at Danny for a moment, slightly grinning. He casually bounces the basketball from hand to hand as he takes a long moment to measure who was in front of him.

"Who wants to know?"

Re: Gym

Danny still smiling politely, but a little unsure of how this will go, says "I'm Danny Chambers, I was wondering if you would be interested in helping me run a single floor , sort of restaraunt in the Recreational Deck.. Im recruiting for a Mr. Jan VanderBeek who has left me in charge of managing this building in question." he says officialy, "I could definitely use some help, and am recruiting Civilians for the job! If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, then maybe just put a check mark right here, and we can make a meeting time" he said kindly, and helpfully showing him a list with his, and a few others names on it. He also holds out a pen for Colt.

Danny was suspect, and didn't like being treated like this, so he just replied, "Sorry for wasting your time, goodbye." and he left.

Once out of earshot he asked Marco "Where is Micaela Nieves currentl Marco? And may I have another visual description?"

Micaela Nieves is currently in cargo hold 4, i have sent her file picture to your datapad. The man you spoke however was Colt Jordan, his ID scan turned out positive.
Elevated tension readings indicate he lied. Have a nice day Danny.

Re: Gym

"Just like I thought..." he mumbled under his breath, that was rare... he would of sworn the man out too... but the fact that he had only ever sworn at someone a few times as an insult or out of anger held him back... he had a rep to hold... although so far he knew nobody except his "boss", and a japanese "superstar" who was too up on her high horse to clean a few dishes. Oh, and now some sort of wad with a god complex, who treats a guy offering him a job like the dirt on his obviously expensive sneakers.... Danny was slowly getting sick of the people who he once thought here were nice. Danny wondered where he would find a Data Pad.... he'd ask Marco now, when he was wondering around the outer rim of the BARRACKS, "Where might I find my Data Pad, Marco?" he asked sort of ridiculously.

"Really Marco?"
Jordan sighs.
"Damn AI, why did you say that all over the speakers?"

He turns to Danny, dumping the ball he was holding in a corner.
"Okay man. Yeah, I'm Colt. But seriously... What do you want from me exactly? You offering me a job as a what? A waiter?"

Re: Gym

Danny was now eager to leave, this was the kind of person he often didn't assosciate with... Alpha Males, always thought themselves king, and more often than not didn't really want anything more than popularity, possibly obtained by bullying, or other methods of lowering the competition... Danny wasn't exactly comfortable, but as people often thought him foolish for doing so, he always was nice until given reason not to be... even if presented with a situation where he knew kindness wasn't a factor...

Nonetheless, he replied to Colt Jordan nicely, and as professionaly as he could muster, "The job would consist of that, making food, possibly other basic labour.... Really the only pay, if no currency is circulating here, I still haven't figured that out, would be free food, and interaction with plenty of people and colorful faces" Danny said, trying not to sound ridiculous, though managing to not sound desperate well enough... He continued with, "Depending on how many days the place is open, and how many people take the job, you would have to work one or two days at the most, and probably only four or five hours a day at the maximum...." he said, "Honestly the only reason I think anyone would take the job is because this place is going to get boring fast, and a job is a steady way to set routine and meaning in life... oh , that and basketball, video games, and trying to teach the ship AI to feel love." he said, putting in some humor, though not sure if it would succeed.

Danny wanted to say, Oh, but you've already said no, so never mind... but using reverse psychology in this case would close the already failing deal...

He waited for Colt to respond, not getting his hopes up, having a feeling it could go either way...

"And you came to me why exactly? What made you think I´d want a job like that? I´m a stuntman, a racecar driver, a daredevil. Not a waiter. Come back if you need a bouncer or something like that." Colt replied before returning to his ballgame.

Jordan checked his watch. With a grin he bounced the basketball a couple more times, then launched for a three-pointer.
He missed, but couldn't care. It was time.
