Recreational deck

The rec deck spans the entire ship in length, twelve decks high. A large boardwalk runs its length, with restaurants, theaters, nighclubs and even a small racetrack providing entertainment.
It is like a small city, or a large village. The main hallway is along the spine of the ship, and like a main street in width. Its like walking straight into the main road of a bustling city. Being able to look 12 decks up from there and seeing the stars above through the many many windows gives a little sense of freedom away from the confines of a colony ship.

The hallway running the entire length of the ship is shrouded in darkness and silence, the numerous shops, bars, cafes and restaurants along its length all closed. What else could they be, most of the people on the ship were still in cryo, there was nobody to work any of them.
Vanderbeek sighed as he walked its length.
So far the captain refused to wake up the rest of the people. He figured they didn't need to yet, as there was not a single planet in range to even scan yet, let alone send teams towards.
He hoped next week there would be at least one planet worth examining. They were a hundred odd years behind schedule already after all.

"How am I to perform if I have no audience?" Mikoto Mishida inquired while following him around, irritation in her voice.

"You are not," Vanderbeek replied. "You are not performing for a long while, if at all. CS-8 Marco Polo is not your personal stage."

"But then why wake me?" She followed up on her question in japanese. Vanderbeek didn't understand, but he could fill in what she was spitting out at him. This woman was beginning to be a handfull.

"First of all, I didn't wake you, the ship did, because it is broken. It wakes people up at random. People that would be better off still sleeping," he snarled back at her. "And second, all civilians are required to make themselves useful. Now, since you have no technical skills, no knowledge of weaponry, cant operate any heavy equipment and sure as hell don't have the stomach to help out in medical, you will be making yourself usefull right here."

"Here? But there is nothing here, this is... closed..."

"Yes, it is indeed," Jan laughed. "all of it, except for this place right here." He stopped at the facade of a store, right next to a selection of turbo lifts. It had a large sign above the sliding doors. It read: General purpose goods, bar and grill.
"You will get to work here. I will have some crew assigned to the kitchen and small restaurant, and you can work the store. Slowly more people will be waking up, and the soldiers will need a place to relax too, so we can open this business and get things up to speed here."

"But... I know nothing of running stores."

"Yeah well, I know nothing of exploring space, yet here we are... Catch" Vanderbeek tossed a keycard to Mikoto. It fell to the floor while she stared at it, perplexed. Jan turned and walked away, leaving her standing there.
"Have fun, and if there is anything you need, let me know."

Mikoto cried. How was she supposed to get this place up and running? She knew nothing of running a store, a bar or a restaurant, and this place was all three things at once. Sure, she could provide entertainment, she could sing, dance, give guests a good show, but if anyone asked to buy a pair of shorts, what should she tell them? So she cried. She cried as she walked through the ground floor, checking out the clothing, the stationary, the consumer goods. She cried as she toured the restaurant on the second floor, wondering how to balance a tray of drinks or carry multiple plates of food, she cried as she walked around the bar on the third floor, seeing the stage, knowing she would not be on it for a long time.
She needed help, that much was sure. Help she hoped VanderBeek would provide as soon as possible.

The arrival of the first drone was was unusual, but nothing compared to what would follow. It moved through the recreational deck in a methodical fashion, only getting as close to a surface as it needed to scan it effectively. Though the thing zipped around quite quickly, for it to be thorough it had to check out every nook and cranny. That meant that anyone that saw it work would see it for a few minutes before it had finally moved on.

Micaela's entourage was something entirely different. One drone, slightly larger and more elaborate than the others, kept pace over her left shoulder. Seven other drones followed behind them like sycophants and yes-men, their collision avoidance routines causing them to dance around, looking like they were jockeying for position.

Once on the main concourse she opened her PC again to check on the data feed, but she closed it a moment later once it was clear nothing was amiss. Then she started wandering the deck looking for anything that would help her pass the time.

VanderBeek quickly closed the distance between himself and Micaela as he entered the rec deck. Though he had noticed Danny as he entered, he had more pressing matters to attend, like someone roaming his deck with automatons. He looked at the drones, then at Micaela, then back at the drones, buzzing, doing their work."This place is off limits, only the central shop is opened. You have no business in these parts of the rec deck."

Micaela threw her arms up into the air in an exaggerated display of frustration as she spun to face the man.

"Why does everyone always assume I'm up to no good? Do I have one of those faces? Is it my skin color? Did someone stick a "I'm a criminal" sign on my back. I am not the problem, you are the problem, sir! I am a god damn delicate flower! Maybe that's it. Is there a course in the military where you step on flowers while some staff sergeant insults your mother? You know what, it doesn't matter. Did it ever one occur to you that if I was here that was because I was supposed to be here? I am a civilian after all and this is a civilian deck!"

There was a slight pause in the tirade before she continued in a more reasonable voice.

"You're going to arrest me, aren't you. Lou is going to be so pissed."

Micaela considered the response for just a moment before discarding it. She didn't like it, but she liked getting locked up less, so she toned her indignation down half a dozen steps.

"My name is Micaela Nieves and I am currently assigned to internal security as a civilian adviser. Given the current condition of the Marco Polo I am performing a test run of a drone reconnaissance flight on the orders of Lieutenant Jennifer Maxwell. She asked me to choose a location where the test drone would not interact with any of the crew, so this seemed a good option given that, as you say, most of the deck is still closed down."

Miss Nieves, Vanderbeek replies, While I understand your reasons for testing these automatons here, I kindly request you take them elsewhere. Perhaps the holds are a better place to have metallic globes buzzing around. We might be a civilian deck, but what little civilians are awake I still consider part of the crew. Thank you.

He then turned his attention to Danny, as if completely forgetting Micaela had ever been there.

Its bottom floor is a sort of general store, selling mostly clothing of all sorts. The second floor would be the diner, where mostly simple fast-food should be served, if they had cooks available. The upper floor, the club, with a nice bar, a large dancefloor and state of the art DJ set.

Micaela couldn't help but roll her eyes. First she was being yelled at for being somewhere civilians shouldn't be, then she was being yelled at for all of the harm she would be doing to the civilians that shouldn't be there. But she didn't voice her displeasure, knowing it would get her nowhere.

So this is how liberty dies, with incessant nagging.

"Unit zero one, recall. Looks like we are upsetting the..." then she trailed off as the urgent message came in from Lou. Once she had listened to it she turned her attention back to Jan, but he had already moved on.

She sighed, wondering what she could do to fix the situation. It had been a little funny at first, but now it was just tiring. She couldn't spend her life on eggshells, but it constantly seemed like she couldn't piss without asking permission first. But she would have to pursue that challenge some other time.

He paused, then continued, "I think it would be wonderful if you would perform your music here, and I'm sure it would excite others equally as much." he paused for a moment again, "The only problem is, without help, we can only have this place open to a few people at once... I can't make drinks, serve tables, and manage everything alone."

Danny continues with "I might see who else can help me, maybe some other civilians, if any. But for now, it would be beneficial if you'd help me out in ways besides singing, like washing dishes, or making pasta, or whatever..."

Danny ended his rant-like observations of the situation with "It's fine if you'd prefer to just do music, and that's it. Where was he?

What the hell was going on?

Troy felt miserable as he dashed onto the recreational deck, driven by an urge he could not explain, feeling foreign in his own body.

The Polo. He was on the Marco Polo. When did he wake up?

For a moment he stopped, studying himself in the glass reflection of a closed storefront. He was naked, bruised and battered, pale. He seen enough in combat to figure out this wasn't good. He looked dead, but as he was looking at himself, so he wasn't. Was he?

Where the hell were his clothes? Why was he covered in wounds?

Patterson dashed forward, following some ancient instinct he could not explain, could not put to words. When his senses told him he was close, he paused again.

What was that buzzing sound? Where did that come from?

Reflected in the windows he saw the globe, above and behind him. A drone! He was being observed. He couldn't have that.

Why not? What the hell was wrong with him?

Lance Corporal Troy Patterson made for the window, launching the full power of his body against the armoured glass. It shattered, he fell into what was supposed to become a diner it seemed.

How did he do that? Did he even do that? He sure didn't want to. That was armoured glass. Why didn't he bleed?

The drone behind Patterson kept its distance, observing. The Corporal knew they saw him, knew he had to do something if he wanted to avoid being captured.

Why would he be captured? What did he do?

It was designed to look like a classic nineteen-sixties diner, benches and tables in bright colors, flower motives on the walls. It was empty, not in use yet. Patterson grabbed hold of a table, lifted it.

Did he just rip the bolts out of the floor? Did that entire metal plate give way?

The drone watched, transmitted its data to its operator. Patterson swung the table. It hit the metal globe fully, causing it and the table to crash to the ground. There it lay, sparks running across its outer hull, shortcircuiting. It would no longer observe.

He had to be fast now. Fast for what? Why?

Confused Troy ran to the back of the diner. Instinct drove him. What he needed was there.

Jen sighed.  Help had arrived.  She looked at the array of firepower available.  "Gentlemen, Troy Patterson was declared dead by the highly skilled Doctors in the medical section.  Then, something caused the dead Mister Patterson to break and I mean physically break out of quarantine.  Another example of this thing's abnormal strength is that table you passed on your way here.  Whatever that thing is in the freezer, it isn't Patterson any more.  Take no chances.  If that thing moves, light it up."

Maxwell gestured toward the freezer door with her shotgun.  "Private Sanders, please show us your wizardry skills by making that freezer door disappear."

Sanders nodded as he removed his pack, quickly grabbed a few blocks of what looked like clay, and started working them into a string. Once he had a nice length he approached the door and molded it along the hinges and handles. He then took a step back to admire his work.
After pulling a pack from his pockets he removed three small pins, and placed one in each piece of clay.

"That should do the trick," he grinned, wiping a lock of blonde hair from his eyes. "That door should be opening as it should. Closing it again will be difficult though."

With a broad grin he handed Jennifer a small black box It had only a red button, and an on/off switch. Then he stepped back, his rifle at the ready.

She flipped the unit's power switch to on and waited for a moment.  "All right, people, stand ready.  Three...  Two...  One..."  Jen held her shotgun in her right hand as she pressed the red button with her left thumb.

The blast was an anti-climax.
Jennifer pressed the button, and while expecting an explosion, the claylike substance just sizzled, and created a bright flash. When the smoke cleared, the door still stood, with scorchmarks along the hinges and door handle.
Sanders stepped forward, positioning himself next to the door on the hinged side, with Ascott himself on the other side. The major held a cannister, tinted green, and pulled a small pin from it.
He nodded at Sanders and the other marines.

Sander kicked his heel against the door, not even that violently. With a loud crash it came falling forward, slamming on the steel floor. Immediately Ascott tossed the canister inside. They all closed their eyes as the flashbang went off, lighting up the freezer inside with about 10.000 lumen. As bright as the bang was, just as quickly it was dark again. Sanders stormed inside, weapon at the ready, followed by two more marines. The flashlights on their weapons quickly scanned the area.

"Well I'll be damned," the demolitions expert whistled through gritted teeth.

In the corner of the freezer the lifeless body of Cpl. Patterson rested, slumped against the wall. There was no movement, no reaction.

"Clear!"

Finding a gap between and around the marines, a single drone flew into the space. Then, a moment later, it was performing a full scan of the room with every tool and sensor it had.

Jen saw the drone working it's way through the Marines to the freezer opening.  She had no doubt that Miss Nieves was recording everything.  Marco's top cop moved to the doorway to see what appeared to be the once again lifeless form of Cpl. Patterson.  "Major, I do not advise getting any closer to the body.  We don't know what happened to get him here and we don't know if it is communicable.  I would like to borrow a couple of your people to secure both the scene and Patterson, then escort the body back to Medical once the medics arrive."

Lt. Maxwell then activated her comm unit.  "Marco, I need a medical Hazmat team at this location to pick up Patterson's body.  Tell the Doc that we found his runaway corpse."

Once the med team had been requested, Jen turned to face the drone.  "Miss Nieves, keep an eye on things here, then follow the med team back to Medical.  Please make your recordings available to the Doctors trying to understand what in the hell just happened here."  Maxwell didn't know why this happened, but the Marco Polo had enough experts to hopefully figure it out and hopefully keep it from happening again.

"Are we certain the subject is down?" he asked Lt. Maxwell. Even with the major present Genassi knew this was a security issue, and as such Jennifer was in charge.

Lt. Maxwell took her eyes off of the corpse to answer.  "The subject showed no response to extreme external stimuli.  I have not detected any movement of any kind since we opened the door, not even breathing.  That means that it is down.  I don't know what reanimated Patterson.  I don't know if he will reanimate again.  We could chop the body into component parts with automatic weapon fire just to make sure it stays down, but that could hinder a medical investigation.  Sanders and I will go with you back to Medical in case our wandering corpse has somewhere else to go.  Someone else will be here to keep people out until you can get a biohazard decontamination procedure is done in the freezer."

She smiled.  "Drone sensor logs will be made available to help your investigation.  Sorry, Doc.  That's all I've got so far, but I'll..."

Jen's voice trailed off as she heard the call about unauthorized weapons fire in a cargo bay.  She answered, "Miss Nieves, as soon as you have eyes there, let me know what's going on."

Maxwell made a mental note to talk to the Captain about security section staffing at her first opportunity.  "Major, would you see to the escorting of the Doc and his people?  Also, I need to borrow a couple of your people right now.  There's weapon fire going on in Cargo Bay Three.

Playing dead worked. These things were so primitive. They didn see the difference. How could they. These primitive vessels they used hardly had enough sensory capability to get by. Soon a better vessel would be required.

What was going on? He couldn't move. Couldn't speak. Locked in. He had heard about it, soldiers suffering shocks so big they turned in on themselves. But why? Radiation sickness sure, but this wasn't how that worked. They had trained events like this. He knew this wasn't due to radiation sickness. Patterson could only hope they found a way to get him back.

Repress the vessel. It was coming back again. Stubborn it was for sure. Another annoying aspect of it. Yes, soon a better vessel would be required. Play dead, they reminded themselves. Play dead.

He felt slipping out of consciousness. How could he warn them? He needed to warn them. They needed to know.
There was a guy coming at him. Fisher, he remembered the name. Hey Fisher. Iḿ in here man, wake me up! Wake me up man.
Did he just say he was dead? He wasn't dead. He was in here, come on, everyone could see that right. Right?

There, he was repressed again. Annoying vessel. It needed replacement fast. They should see to that soon.

He looks back at the team waiting outside, back to the scanner then back to Troy before appearing to come to a decision and directing a well aimed kick at the body.

He purses his lips if nothing happens and slowly kneels down next to the body, doing more extensive readings and for the first time in his life wishing he had a weapon...but his revolver was halfway across the ship in his room.

"Welp...I'm baffled..."He exclaims after several moments.

"Agreed. But whatever means we use for restraint will have to be substantial. Whatever is driving the body now seems to be able to surpass human norms." Drago had been pondering why Patterson or his body had chose to hide in the freezer. Was it something that was stored here he or it was seeking or was it the cold itself? "Once we have him secured and moved we should have the contents of the freezer check see if anything is missing. He came here with a purpose we need to figure out what that was."
