Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Saskan is glad to see that Ignatz has joined him to face off with the drake. He'd held his breath too long and exhales catching the drake offguard.

"Now Ignatz, I've softened him up for you! Give him all you can!"

OOC:
Minor: Dragonbreath hits drake for 7 damage, Ignatz gets +1 to hit and +5 to damage until end of my next turn.
Standard: Commander's Strike for Ignatz - +3 to damage
Move: No movement

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Ignatz's head is still hazy, and as Saskan's call cuts through that haze, a small distant part of Ignatz's mind wonders how exactly the dragonborn does that so consistently. The rest of Ignatz's mind, however, is occupied with the opening Saskan has created. He roars and his weapon blurs as he swings it, and it digs deep into the drake's back with a sickening CRACKCRACK as he snaps ribs, leaving the creature bloody and struggling to breathe.

"Whoa!"

Just as Warfryn fired off another Eldritch Blast at the remaining drake, Ignatz appeared as if from nowhere and careered into the beast.  Only at the last second did the gnome manage to divert his Blast so as not to hit Ignatz.

17:55, Today: Warfryn rolled 6 using 1d20+5.  Eldritch Blast on remaining drake.

Do you like my excuse for a truly terrible dice roll?

The spirit howls out and strikes at Malph but misses as his blow rains down on it, and causes it to drop to the ground, annoyed. For it, fortunately, the blow seem to lack potency against it's incorporeal frame.
The drake spits blood and bite at Ignatz how gravely wounded it but fail to produce much for the effort, gasping for air and feeling the weight of it's injuries.
It won't last long in this condition.

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

Consider the last post void.

In a ferocious turn of events the spirit vanishes in a shriek as the last dragon fall heavily to the ground.
It is then you notice two things. Kbenjar breaths barely and his arm is partial torn off. He is in dire straights..
The skulk, coughs, raising it's hand.
"Save me...and I will promise you riches and information......You have my word!"

Checking the ground behind you, you notice a large crater, about twenty feet deep, but with easy paths down to the bottom of it.
You notice, quite surprisingly, that there are large bones sticking out. A dragon...most certainly.(Which type can be detailed with Nature Dc 16).
You also discover numerous other bones, human and others that are strange, twisted and demonically warped. The dragon burial site is the spot where a large battle between Karavakos’ hordes and the Nerath Empire, trying to close the rift to Shadowfell, occurred.
A battleground.
Whoever comes first, discover a small indenture, leading to a small door or latch, which can be opened with some strength into a smaller settlement, or housing...Curious but appears to be a previous settlement used by the proprietors of this place.

OOC:
Regardless of your choices, this combat has risen you all to level 2!

"Me first!  Me first" yelled Warfryn as he dived between Ignatz's legs.  The big half-orc almost blocked the small door that he had just kicked open but the little gnome was small enough to go below him.

"Nope!  Nope!  Too big!  Eugh!  Who would want that?"

He wantonly tossed things aside until he found something that he thought he could use.  And by the time the others had pushed their way in, Warfryn was sitting on a rotted wooden chest brandishing a wicked looking rod and a worn-looking set of leather armour while a shimmering medallion hung around his narrow neck.

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

Ignatz ignores the skulks pleas dispassionately, not even bothering to make the effort to kill the creature. Trusting that someone more suited to the task will tend to Kbenjar, Ignatz heads down to investigate the ritual site.

~

Ignatz laughs cheerfully at Warfryn's eagerness. He's completely exhausted, but happily sets to work immediately, carrying armload after armload of artifacts and goods up and out back to the edge of the crater. Something in that load catches his eye- a small, dark glass bottle of honing oil with a bright gold badge set in a wax seal. "Reaver's... Armz?" he reads aloud awkwardly, squinting at the small faded label. "Varfryn!" he hollers. "Hyu know magic, vhat iz dis schtuff?"

"Nephew, let us tend to Kbenjar," the aged dragonborn warrior said, kicking the dead drake off of the mutiliated dwarf.  Initial inspection did not bode well for their divine companion.  He knelt down, attempting do what he could to at least make him comfortable for his remaining breaths.

"Eh?  What?"

Warfryn popped up his head from his little pile of loot as Ignatz showed him his own loot.

"Hm!  Interesting!  It looks like this oil can make your weapon even beefier than usual.  I think you just rub it on when you are going to fight."

He squinted into the bottle to see how much was in it.  "I don' know how long it lasts for though, or how many times you can use it.  I suppose you'll find that out in time."

He turned to the amulet and racked his little brain for information.  At last, a light dawned.

"Hey!  This is a good 'un for you, my lad.  You can wear it as an amulet round your neck and when you charge away from one enemy to attack another, that first enemy can't take a swipe at you.  I think this must have been made with you in mind."

He tossed flask and amulet back to Ignatz and started donning his new armour.

He twirled around.  "Hey boys!  How do I look?"

Saskan moved to aid his uncle but said quietly, "Alas, I'm good at beckoning allies to rally but am no combat medic. I don't know if there's anything we can do for him. He died the way he lived, in a blast of glory."

He overheard Warfryn and Ignatz uncovering the loot and though he was curious as to what he might find inside as well, he stopped and took a knee beside Kben and prayed for Bahamut to guide the dwarf's soul to Moradin's home.

"It looks like my field dressings have stabilized him.  A little time, and some encouragement, he should be able to awaken.  He'll need some assistance, but he should be able to move under his own power," the elder dragonborn said.

OOC: DC 15 to stablize.  An inspiring word should bring him back to 1.

Malpurious joined in the looting of the vault, finding some armor that shrieked and an amulet that would enhance his defenses and provide additional protections.

"Buck K-BEN. You can definitely make it!" Saskan said. It wasn't the most sensitive thing to say but it seemed appropriate for a dwarf.

Once Kbenjar was back on his feet, Saskan moved over to the looting ceremony that was happening and found a nice set of chain mail, a new spear with an impressive grip, and an amulet similar to what Warfryn had pulled out.

"Warfryn, what do you make of these things?"

OOC: I'm taking a Chieftain's Weapon - Spear - grants a bonus to hit on any attacks I grant to allies; Dwarven Chain Mail - I get a healing surge so I don't have to use an inspiring word on myself :); and an Amulet of Protection.

Malphurious spent some time looking at the ancient dragon bones before turning to his party members.

"Alright, comrades, it's been a long trek.  We've cleared out the kobolds and we're done something to prevent this Karalel's ritual.  Kbenjar needs some proper rest and medical treatment.  We should return to Winterhaven with our bounty and this new information and inform the Lord," Malphurious said, as he hefted up the sack of kobold hands.  He had added in the heads of the sulker, halfling, and human workers.  Perhaps their identities would serve a further clue if they were known in Winterhaven.

OOC: We've all gotten our gear.  I added the heads of what could be found.  forgot my level bonus on the nature roll, so I identified the bones.

10:24, Today: Malphurious rolled 1516 using 1d20+12.  nature.

Warfryn took a short, nay brief, break from admiring his new equipment in order to help Saskan and the others identify the new-found loot.

"Wow!  This was good.  But I s'pose a dragon burial would usually have good stuff in it."

He nodded to Kbenjar.  "Good to see ya on yer feet lad."

And in general "So?  Back to town is it?"

--Feel free to post in the Winterhaven thread once you return--

Malph determines that the bones are those of a shadow dragon, and that the site is more than 200 years old. They also discover numerous other bones, human and others that are strange, twisted and demonically warped.

Gasping for air, you notice the skulk make a final move to a crate you had yet to discover. He takes a final breath and exhales. There is a small mark on it, and a small book on top of it.

Kbenjar sighed and dusted himself off, nodding in appreciation.

He looked at the mark before examining the book.

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

With some strength you pry open the crate, and inside find various items.
A small vial, with a reddish liquid, appearing like a fine brandy or wine, various metallic stones and bones of various sorts, a small skull and curiously a small mirror.
Looking at the mirror facing you, you notice the silver mirror is tarnished and when you look into it you find your reflection grayish and misty.
Suddenly you see your face but it is like a dark corrupted version, glaring out at you with white skin and eyes shining with malice.

As he eyes the book, it appears to Warfryn to be a logbook of his work. A few passages stand out.
“Bairwin hired us, as he wanted to ensure that none of these relics found at the site leaked out of here. He especially asked for that mirror over there in that crate. I don’t know why. It was Bairwin who told me where to find it, and payed us well to keep our mouths shut, claiming dark involment. Also his spy in town, knew more of various locations, including the den of kobolds we should stay clear of - due to a higher purpose.."

Further down...
“When I set out to dig, I had thought this was the burial site of some old dragon. However, the skeleton of the dragon is intermingled with other remains and skeletons from many lesser creatures, many of them looks to be demonic in origin. It seems as if this is the site of some old battle, rather than a burial site. I can only wonder were these demons came from and what could have been worth fighting over in this remote place.”

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

Malphurious pondered the book's contents, and all they had learned, as they proceed to walk back to Winterhaven.

"So, we know the following facts:

1) The Kobolds were connected to Kalarel and to the cult of Shar, given the symbols we found.  We have some amulets to prove it.

2) Bairwin, the merchant, is some how connected to all of this. It's hard to tell if he's just taking advantage of the situation or is part of the conspiracy in full.  But if Old Sara is missing and his business is profiting, one can make some assumptions.

3) There is an unknown spy in Winterhaven, proved by two separate sources: the letter and this diary."

He replayed the events in Winterhaven in his mind.  Saskan and Malphuriuos had independently reached the likely location of the kobold lair through their discussions at the fighters guild and triangulating their raids to a central point.  But it was Warfyn who discovered the exact location.

"So Warfyn.  You learned of the exact location during our time in town.  Who did you learn it from and could that be our spy?"

"So Warfyn. You learned of the exact location during our time in town. Who did you learn it from and could that be our spy?"

Warfryn looked up and dusted himself off - his new armour was a little grubby after all.

"Ey?  What?  Oh, the map.  It was an elf humter at the inn.  Nonny Nin?  Ninnian?  Something like that.  I was asking about the kobolds and it was her who said about seeing them at the waterfall.  She even sat down and drew that map.  That was good of her, weren't it?  Didn't have to do that.  So I don' reckon she could be the spy if the spy and the kobolds was workin' thegether".

Unusually he paused to draw breath and then started again.

"But maybe there's more than one side.  They do say, the Gods that is, that evil is against everyone, so maybe even other evil ones..."

He stopped short and looked puzzled for a few seconds before brightening again.  "But maybe this BArwin chappie will tell us what we needs to know.  Can we go get him now?

"Well, it might not be bad for one of us to deliver the bounty and intel to the Lord and the others to keep tabs on the two suspected conspirators.  That way, if they catch wind of their detection and are seemingly ready to leave, they can intervene," Malphurious said in a method of compromise between ridgedly following the legal process and near outright vigilantism.
