The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

--Once done in town, post in here, the moment you leave town--
You set of while the sun is still present, and allowing yourself time and effort to get there somewhat quickly; the map indicates that the main travel roads south will lead you close to the site, allowing the last mile to be taken through dense woods, and thus likely presenting the only slowdown on your trip.

The trip is largely uneventful - while Ignatz has learned of rampant assaults on the routes, they manage to evade them for now.
Ninaran’s map is spot on. You arrive at a cross section, and a small nod indicates a hard to see route through the underwood, and some wildberry bushes, which lead onto what looks like an animal trail. Small footprints on the ground detail that at some point, small reptile like feet have walked here.

The map implies you have to walk a small mile further in, but also that the sun is slowly setting, so time is precious.
You hear a surging rush of water nearby, splashing against rock.
Small glades of trees lead up to a cliffside waterfall, where a stream tumbles from the top of a rocky overhang. The water descends the side of the hill and flows away to the southwest.
Off to the left, you notice a circle of worn stone monoliths stands on the ground, somewhat out of place but yet fitting all the same. The outside is empty for now.

OOC:
You are outside the perimeter of the waterfall and the area leading in. You have the choice as to what you do now, and how you approach it. Any perception checks are made at a -5 penalty based(if listening) due to the waterfall. Sight is unaffected.

Ignatz creeps toward the pool, displaying a level of grace and focus that his usual manner would never suggests. He moves like a large cat, pupils dilated, nostrils flaring as he notes the direction of the wind. As Ignatz approaches round back he notices that the large monoliths of the western side, are most likely a druidic friendship circle, and if he came closer, he could likely make out who made it and thus what it's purpose was. (Nature DC 20 for this)

Most of you notice a large number of kobold tracks in the soft mud along the river bank leading to and from the waterfall.
Kbenjar however is certain that there are also a few goblin tracks mixed in with the kobold tracks and even a large goblinoid track mixed into it.

You hear faint voices in the distance, even despite the waterfall roaring down. Ignatz and Kbenjar however also notices several shadows near the waterfall moving about.

It suddenly become visible that Ignatz have to stop his movement and make a choice as to what he do next.

OOC: You have not been spotted, so surprise and initiative is on your behalf. You have full usage of your powers and AP due to extended rest since last conflict.

Warfryn scuttled through the vegetation as quickly and as quietly as he could.  But soon realised that his attempt at stealth was a waste of time when Ignatz and Malphurious burst out into the midst of the kobolds, swinging and yelling as they did so.

The gnome shook his head in despair as he tried to get position on the kobold still standing in the stone circle.

Drawing his rod, he pronounced the curse of his mentor on the poor, frightened creature but when he tried to fry it with an arcane blast, his foot hit a tree root and instead the blast shot into the air like a firework display.

“Oh shit!" He said softly.

The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

The dervish that is Ignatz projects out of the forest, leafs and branches flying everywhere. While the Circle remain a mystery, his hits are true and menacing, causing great anguish to the first he hits, which is no match for his blow. The slinger, barely manages to draw weapon before taking a heavy blow from him.
And so it begins...

Malph advances on the sturdy Kobold, wielding a shield made from a single large dragon scale, fitting it's side just fine, and just barely manages to avoid the blow. However his presences lures it to only focus on him.

As the flares of divine energy surges, two manages to adapt to the light, narrowly escaping, but the last succumbs to the energy, falling to it's death.

MALPH can add the blow to his post for this round. Anyone beating Initiative 12 acts before the kobolds - this is mainly for damage, triggers etc. Posts should come from you regardless. Will update when players have posted. Surprise round over!

Ignatz is not forming coherent thoughts at this point- the only notion that has filtered past the red curtain at this point is how frustrated it was being stuck in place by the kobold with the slingshot last time, and that there are two with similar weapons here. The rest is just roaring laughter, the meaty crunch of armor, flesh and bone all being folded in on each other, and the quiet spatter of blood being flung from Ignatz's gouge onto the stony riverbank.

In a flurry of flying bolts of light the kobolds manage to sneak in and stab and surround Ignatz, only to fall the second after their blows land.
From the shadows a quick nimble kobold with a curious spear strikes at Ignatz but the light distracts him, and quickly he slides back away from him, cursing his name.
The dragonshield shifts and strikes Saskan, in a defying attempt, ignoring the threat of Malph for the time being, teaming up with tunneler, and striking the younger dragonborn with a sharp strike to the gut.

They fall to the holy energy of Kbenjar shortly after and suddenly the field seems less occupied. You notice that the dragonshield has a faint blueish glow to it, as it stands on the circle.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Ignatz barely even registers the kobolds who swarm him and fall- his gaze is fixed on his new prey, a kobold who's manner suggests a more skilled fighter than the others', and he laughs with delight as he just barely manages to avoid his new friend's thrust. The slippery draconian easily slips under Ignatz's haymaker of a blow, living up to his hopes, but he doesn't see Ignatz' reckless follow-up. Ignatz grits his teeth and stops the backswing with his hand, the sharp point of the crescent blade digging into his palm, and launches another sickeningly heavy attack much more quickly than he should have been able to. The shocked kobold tries to pivot and dodge, and while he manages to avoid dying outright, Ignatz leaves his shoulder shattered shattered and carves a chunk out of his leg.

"No no...Please...me help! Yes! Irontooth kill me otherwise...I aid you yes, tell you of danger, you let me go yes?"
It tried it's best but pleaded in a poor situation. It had few options and it knew it.
It covered most of it's face following the battle, it was all alone as the silence spread around the waterfall.

The surviving kobold was very fortunate that Ignatz had not sunk fully into the hysteria of battle. The moment it stops fighting the wide-eyed half-orc has its neck pinned to the ground with the haft of his polearm, one boot pressing down the end not held in his hand, one clawed hand raised in the air ready to tear the things throat out.

The few moments the others take to approach the tableau are not long enough for Ignatz's high to fade enough for him to easily form sentences. "HAAAA.... HAAAA...," Ignatz pants, "TALK..!"

"Two more questions before we let you scamper off.  One, how many more of your pack are in there?  And when is your next patrol or raiding party set to leave?"  Malphurious asked, but was beginning to be distracted by a faint red light beyond the waterfall.  He pointed it out to the others as they awaited a response.

It becomes obvious to Malph that the kobold can't count.
In an attempt it merely holds up it's hands, both and states: "..maybe this many?"
He shrugs at the other question.

The Kobold runs as fast as it's small and injured legs can stand.
Which right now isn't much - Ignatz notices a curious smell as it departs but think no more of it for now.
There is silence around, and for now, you feel like you could indeed have the upperhand.
You expect at least two kobold handful of opposition inside, if your source however is reliable.

Malph notices that there is a small pathway behind the waterfall as well and can see the faint red light emerge from crystals inside. Curious. He hears faint steps, but sees nothing.

The rough, moisture-slicked walls of the cavern behind the waterfall give way to walls of ancient, worked stone. Here and there can be seen what appear to have once been bas relief statues -- but years of moisture have worn them away to unrecognizable lumps.
Through the archway to the east can be seen another large chamber, in the center of which stands a great throne of stone. Set into the back of the throne is a giant fire glowgem, casting an eery red light thorughout the chambers.
Warfryn is met by quite a sight.

Wandering around they see more small kobolds and overseeing them, three bow wielding kobolds keeping watch. They seem oblivious to Warfryn for now, as the dark near the waterfall shields him well, as long as he remains there.
Warfryn sees movement and hears snorring further inside the chambers hinting of something further back aswell.

"There are lots of kobolds" he said quickly as he described the scene inside "and there are probably more creatures further back.  I couldn't see what was in the deeper parts of the cave but there was light and so I imagine there are more enemies there."

He slowed down and took a deep breath.

"I think we are going to need some large area effects to reduce the opposition or we are going to be outnumbered several to one.  What powers do people have ready?  Unfortunately, all my powers are against one target only."

The group positioned themselves to strike from the north.  Their goal was to use the cavern's natural passage ways and walls to bottleneck the kobolds, not allowing them to use their numbers to their advantage.  Then when the clustered up, the Dragonborn and the Invoker, could user their breath weapons and area attacks to decimate their numbers.

With the beserker charging ahead, the elder Dragonborn warrior followed suit, but not with the same cheetah like speed.  He sent his flail crashing down on the first kobold he could reach.

A small bell rings. The gem which appear attached to the top of an empty bronzed throne, emanates strongly, pulsating.
An alarm. Somehow you have been found out and you notices more movements; suddenly two kobolds ascend upon Ignatz. He fells one, only to see more appear!
One of the quickly, as in very quickly, moving kobolds slither in and pierces below his armor, causing him a piercing wound in the side that almost takes the life out of him, as it laughs insanely at it's success.
Two more engage Kbenjar and Saskan is shot at, with a curious tip on the arrow. As he is hit by the feet a sticky and smell liquid spreads on his feet and he is stuck!

You hear a snarl or rather a roar in the distance.
"You should not have mettled in the Shar's business, KILL THEM!"
The tone is rough and obvious, spoken in a broken common tongue, in laced with what is likely goblin. They remain at the back, not engaging you just yet and appear out of sight. Be it arrogance or similar is hard to say, but the sheer amount of kobolds leaves little time to contemplate anyways.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Ignatz drops the kobold's arm and looks up at Saskan, still laughing hysterically. He can see that the warrior is shouting to him, but between the blood loss and the adrenaline he only registers a few words. "...heart, we..." That's right, there were others here fighting with him. He'd forgotten. His head clears a little. He couldn't afford to lose face in front of his new traveling companions, this was the first serious fight they'd seen him in. His laughter sputters into a chuckle and then a far saner-sounding belly laugh.

Malphurious hears the howls of the barbarian and surges past the slinger to come to his aid.  "Finish that one," he said to Warfyrn as he set off.  Seeing the barbarian entering a rage, he tried to match the half-orc's ferocity, slamming his flail into the creature, knocking it flat.  It didn't move after that.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Shifting movements are heard in the distances, and a deep laughter.
Coming ever so close to claiming a body, the group recovers and fights back.
With a few more falling, one of the slingers drop back and unleashes at the dwarf, who has taken so many of their own.
You hear barking further in, and the tongue is deep and gutteral, as if orders are being spoken.
Malph is stabbed once through a slick move and while many of them fall, a lone slinger takes a shot and hits Kbenjar, with a fiery shot, laughing.

NEW ROUND!

"Hahaaa, dot's de spirit!" Ignatz growls as Malphurious delivers a crushing finishing blow. He looks like he's about to give the dragonborn a companionable slap on the back when the slinger behind him moves. Ignatz reacts instantly and thoughtlessly, darting toward the kobold with claws and fangs bared. Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

With the last Kobold felled, the room grows silent.
However you know, just ahead there are more to be seen and found.
At the fare end of the room which Malph can eye into is the bronzed throne adorned with symbols and the pulsating red gem, which appears to be removable.
The room itself leads to two chambers on each side of it and just ahead there are two additional rooms also. In short, many nooks and hidden spots for enemies to be in.

Note: Ignored the hit on T3, as it is blocked and out of range, the map poorly shows this.
All kobolds are belived to have been killed now, so we have an intermission. Realisticly, you also have to consider your next steps since there are more kobolds further in, you know this and you have to consider that they may advance and soon.
For now, you have one rounds worth of actions to consider, non-combat however.

The tall brutish figure, known as Irontooth and his comrades vanish from the room with the small mountain of coins, which vary in size and value.
As Malph looks, it appears as much of it might be regarded as fool's gold; worth little. He does notice a small crate further in, which appear unlocked as the lid is slightly ajar.
Irontooth is larger than the rest, a clear hobgoblin, and imposing with a large battleaxe in hand. It gleams slightly against the inside of the cave.
The sly kobold is out of sight still. Even Malphs keen eyes can not see him, as many nooks and crannies offer shadows to hide within.
The Wyrmpriest stands with Irontooth discussing heated matters. He points towards the waterfall and orders his two shields forward confidently.
"Come out and play, infidels! Let Shar's Darkness consume you!!!"

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

During the suddenness of it all, few manage to do much initially, but as Ignatz gets in deep, actions are commenced. They knew you were coming, the rod hinting of something, causing the shields to engage, but no one expected the hulking orc to fly in like he did!
The wyrmpriest is hurt badly, and manages barely to move behind Irontooth - whom snarls and laughs. Irontooth is a large Hobgoblin and wears a withered kobold arm around his next, as a sick idol of power. He moves forwards and strikes composed, hinting of composed strength; almost holding back. The priest unleashes a bolt of acidic energy towards Ignatz stinging his skin and hinting of the prowess the priest has.
Elsewhere the dragonshields show cunning, albeit one take a huge hit and is knocked down, the other exposes Warfryn twice, striking him with intent. The quickblade shifts quickly and again manages to dig under his defenses, putting Warfryn within range of alot of punishment.

Effects:
Proper round, executed on 20, as the sunrod alarmed them, and all actions following that, upto my previous posts are the actions that could be done during that, hence minor/surprise actions.
KBENJAR, please add a post for this round and the coming, you are last in initiative anyways, so should affect anyways.

As the Dragonshield is in melee with Warfryn, and he uses a ranged attack vs another target, he provokes a OA. It does miss however!
Quickblade shifts 4, causing 16 damage to Warfryn!<Red>(Please include current health!!)
.
Wyrmpriest uses free action shift, behind Irontooth. Shoots energy orb, causing 8 damage.
Irontooth turns towards Ignatz and charges. Hits for 9 damage.
Dirty tactics vs Warfryn: 7 damage and is slowed until the end of the kobold's next turn.
Dragonshield uses standard action to rise, no further actions.

Temp Hp removed where fits.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Ignatz ignores the huge bugbear for now- his focus is locked on his prey, that slippery caster. He slips past the brutish chief with catlike grace and speed, circling around the wyrmpriest in a flash to deliver a fatal, crushing blow- and then he slips on the kobold's spilled blood. He only barely keeps his footing as his heavy glaive whistles harmlessly through the air.

OOC:
Storyteller, Warfryn's readied attack happened before the dragonshield moved into melee, so it should not have provoked an OA.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Through stern effort, you manage to chop down the health of the foes to a substancial level; yet the quick blade manages to just make it and hide himself behind a low wall just north of Saskan.
The light and metal fields the field and most real for their injuries. One manages barely to stay alive as they answer Malphs challenge but can not seem to bring him down.
Irontooth laughs and strikes hard at Ignatz, just barely missing but allowing the priest to duck behind and cover itself, snarling at him. He lucked out, but Irontooth is not one to back down. An orb of acidic power striking Ignatz again, causing his skin to tingle with pain.

Effects/Damage:
@Kbenjar: Due to error in RAW books, it has no duration, but sidelining it with similar feats and abilities: It will last until end of your next turn!

Irontooth charges in on Ignatz. He barely misses(16 vs 17).
Wyrmpriest shifts behind, and throws acid orb - hits, 7 damage to Ignatz!
Quickblade manages to hide behind wall, DC 17 perception to find it, assuming you chase after.
Malph is hit by Dragonshield, takes 11 damage!

Ignatz slips past the bugbear again effortless, completely uninterested in him for the time being. This time he knows the searing acid is coming, and he knows the kobold mystic will have to stand still to cast it. Ignatz begins to laugh hysterically again, and as the small of Ignatz's burning skin and hair fills the room he finally, the half-orc finally catches his prey. He tackles the wyrmpriest, winding it and dropping it to its knees. It never draws in another breath to replace that one- Ignatz's massive blade crashes straight down through its skull, bisecting its torso and pulping the head completely. Ignatz roars and laughs madly, covered in blood.

Ignatz notice a similar sense of chaos and thrill of battle in Irontooth and in a wild swing strikes at them both, however, only hitting Malph in the side with a heavy thud.
In a swift movement, the dragonshield ducks under Saskans attack and shifts backwards, charging with heavy pace towards Malph, however being winded and wounded, misses him.
The quickblade is out of sight lurking for his chance to strike.
The field is changed and Irontooth does not mourn the loss of the priest, rather he seems willing to find sweet death, through wast amounts of blood spilled by his enemies.

Ignatz finally gives Irontooth his full attention as he steps over the wyrmpriest's corpse to narrowly avoid the huge bugbear's axe, and what he sees fills his heart to the brim.

Ignatz squares his shoulders and pounds his bare chest with one fist. "HWAARRGGH! VARRIOR! My name iz Ignatz!" He holds that same fist out and adds, "Hyu iz my brodder in spirit! Hyu vill kill me today or hy vill kill hyu, but first ve vill spill blood together!" Ignatz's face is a vision of brutal ecstasy as he explodes with violence. He leads off with a barehanded haymaker that turns Irontooth's whole body jaw-first, and then swings his glaive in a wide arc one handed. The blade digs deep into the bugbear's chest, and Ignatz rips it out with a spray of blood, whirls, and slams the spiked pommel into Irontooth's side with audibly rib-cracking force. Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

OOC: I think it's safe to assume that Saskan used his AP to ready an action to use Commander's Strike once Ignatz moved into melee range

Irontooth's gaze meets Ignatz's: they both know that Ignatz is at the last of his strength, whatever he might say, and would not survive Irontooth's fury. Ignatz, however, is not alone. As desperate as Irontooth is to meet Ignatz's challenge, that overwhelming will is being denied. Malphurious, with a mix of his own superhuman tenacity and Kbenjar's divine protection, infuriatingly deflects blow after numbing blow.

Ignatz advances, but his crescent glaive feels so heavy in his hands, and there's blood running down into his eye- and then Saskan's fiery breath swirls around Ignatz. He and Irontooth are two whirlwinds of blood and flame, each simultaneously feeding and threatening to consume the other. The heat quickens his taxed muscles, and his warlord's passionate cry courses through him like lightning. His eyes widen, the pain forgotten, his pupils dilate, and he leaps forward drawing on reserves of strength that even he didn't know slumbered within him.

Irontooth turns to stave off Ignatz's assault, his metallic grin glinting in the firelight to match Ignatz's yellowed fangs. He blocks the pommel of Ignatz's huge weapon, and the grin fades as the unexpected force nearly wrenches his axe from his grasp. The blade follows in another whirling follow-up, and Irontooth's attempt to block this time does cost him his grip on the axe, along with two fingers. Still spinning, Ignatz takes all of his momentum and drives a fist like a sledgehammer deep into the brutish goblinoid's stomach. As Irontooth doubles over, eyes wide, Ignatz straightens, lifts his glaive into the air, and with a tremendous roar cleaves Irontooth's head and right arm from the rest of his body.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

--Combat over, in case you were wondering..--

As Irontooth falls you hear a disgruntled phrase in goblin - but only two words stand out - Karalel and Shar.

You notice a chain around his waist, used as a belt holding a small pouch.
Within you find a parchment reading the following in common:

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
To Irontooth.
“My spy in Winterhaven suggests we keep an eye out for visitors to the area. It probably does not matter. In a few more days, I’ll completely open the rift. Then Winterhaven’s people will serve as food for those dark mistress Shar sends to do my bidding.”
Karalel.

You also find a smaller note aside it, but the wording is in heavy goblinoid and requires someone with the ability to read this. You can however keep it for now.

Having set eye on the northern room,Irontooths room, Malph can deduct that the gold is for the most part for show, and of little true value. The coins do add up, but it takes a great effort to collect them. The chest is quite large, perhaps the size of the coffin.
A great, mounded nest of shredded paper has been built up in one corner of the room. It looks surprisingly comfortable. A variety of braziers, each burning a different scented incense, are lit here and there and around the room.
The walls are lined with empty stone shelves.

The halls emanate of darkness and silence. The gem behind the throne shines brightly(Nature Dc 18 to decipher purpose of it!), and one can wonder it's purpose.

Further back you find two rooms, one belonging to the wyrmpriest.
This walls of this crooked chamber appear to have once been covered in colorful mosaics, but these have recently been defaced beyond recognition. In one corner of the room there is a shallow depression in the floor before a plain altar of stone.
Atop the altar a golden  disk with deep purple border sits in honor(Religion 15)
The far side of the chamber gives way once more to the natural walls of the cavern, in a series of tiered steps leading down into the darkness.(Balance 10 to navigate, do advise if you go down!).

OOC:
A quick search of the foes depict this:
Kobolds et al: Chainmails, spears, hides, short swords, arrows, 3 x heavy shields.
Wyrmpriest: black hide armor, spear, bone mask (shaped like a dragon’s skull)
Irontooth: Key, parchment(see above)
Treasure room: 42 gold is smaller coins, locked chest(DC 15 thievery or similar).
A perception check can be made to search further - if you have anything specific in mind. This can be done in general and for all room!

Further note:
Padraig voices this, and I am unsure if I added it earlier:
- Will offer a bounty for hunting kobolds; 5 gp for each right hand.
- Pays a reward of 50 gp for the location of the kobold lair; would pay 200 gp if
someone were to wipe out the kobold threat.

Malphurious lets his guard down with a sigh.  "Gah, I honestly think I threw my back out with that sweeping strike," he said as he rubbed the pommel of his flail into the soft nook of his lower back.

As they searched his corpse and read the note, he began to try and piece things together.  "It would seem that this Irontooth has some connection with Shar.  A spy in Winterhaven and the name of Karalel?  We didn't meet anyone by that name did we?  Opening portals sounds pretty ominous and kidnapped townsfolk sound like they could be this 'food'.  Were this band of kobolds somehow connected to the supposed cult?"

He let the group stew on his comments as he walked over to check on the chest.  "Why do they leave the gold scattered on the ground and then lock the chest.  It's like lock it all or none of it for Bahamut's sake."

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Saskan rummages through the pockets of Irontooth, and curiously finds a small note, written in common.
"They are coming! Prepare!"
It looks freshly written and made of a fabric commonly used in clothing, often sewn breeches.
He is also finds a note written in what he guesses is goblin, stating:
Saa Ghaal Irontooth,
We have received your chaat’oor tuuvotos.
Good work brother. Lhevk-ruh Krand is proud of your work.
Shava Tra’ak

Kbenjar noticed the same, but the word meant little else to him, the gem however standing out.
The gem is an ornate firestone which pulsates light 20 yards away from it's core.
It is also often used along with a throne akin to what they see in traditional druidic gatherings and initiation rituals. It can likely be removed with some tinkering.
This hints strongly at the original use of the cavern.

The disc is curious - but after a while Kbenjar has little doubt - it is the sacred symbol of Shar. More curiously, he notices a faint washed out symbol behind it. Bahamut.
He notices a curious mark or indent on symbol which hints that one could touch or push it perhaps?

The far stairs howl as the wind runs down it's long hallway, further into the dark.

Curiously, Malph manages to crack the iron chest open. Inside, he finds various trinkets, but also a curious flail, which has a curious bright glow to it, as if it had been polished.
You also manage to find a broad selection of necklaces with the same golden disk, which may be of worth to someone.

Just before moving Kbenjar and those close to the symbol of Bahamut notices that the indentation can be pressed, and is some sort of mechanical device.
Doing so, a stone moves aside, and displays something curious. The size of a common dinner plate and carved in limestone is a holy symbol..of bahamut, and one could guess it would be the one you sought to begin with.

You notice the only uncovered way leading forward, displaying a few curious markings.
It is symbols you have not seen before, but familiar to those seen outside on the stone circles. Hence they might appear druidic in nature and likely lost for the ages.
The stairs bottom out into a large, square chamber. In each corner a thick ionic column stands between roof and ceiling. The walls here are covered in small niches. In a few of these niches there are ceramic urns, but it appears that most of these urns have been
destroyed: The floor is covered in ash and broken shards of pottery.
In the center of the room, the floor sinks into a circular depression. In the center of this depression a 15-foot wide mass of thick roots run between the floor and the ceiling.
You sense a sensation in the air..

A howling wind suddenly whips through the chamber. Shards of light burst forth from somewhere within the tangled mass of roots in the center of the chamber, and then the roots begin to move of their own accord -- drawing apart and forming a cage-like sphere in the center of the room. Looking through the gaps between the roots you can see a translucent spirit in the form of a human figure floating in the center of the sphere.
"LEAVE US TO OUR ETERNAL REST."

Note: Kbenjar notices that the spirits and signs mimic those outside on the ritual circle - druidic in nature and hence related to to the spirits you see.
Saskan recalls a local deity present here, followed by the druids. "The verdant Lord" - A mythical lord akin to a huge treant whose growth and vines preserved the woods and forest lands.
One thing that springs to mind. They are not violent by nature, but protective. They can be reasoned with.

"Yeugh!"

Warfryn was not normally squeamish - he was a warlock after all - but the idea of carrying around a bag of kobold hands, possibly for several days, was a little too much for his stomach.

"Come on then" he said, looking askance at Malphurious.  "The soomer we get going, the sooner we'll get back to town."

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

The trek is not long, as the direction given leads you well on your way.
You are waylaid by a random group of kobolds, strayed from the larger group along the way, but manage them with ease.
Subtract 1 surge unless you make a save - 10 or above equals a success.
One of them carries a note:"Irontooth needs aid - head to the caverns and enforce the guards, our spy warns us of approaching enemies!"

You make haste from here, noticing a correlation between Karelel again and the increasing forces of kobolds roaming.

You notice a steep-sided crater punctures the wilderness.
Near the center of the depression, several humanoid figures cluster around a collection
of bones. Two small, dragonlike creatures near the crater rim stand alert and stare at your approach. On the far side of the crater, a sinister apparition presides over the gathering.
You will not be able to surprise them, but perhaps talking to them is an option?

Ignatz hesitates for a few seconds, waiting to see if someone will suggest a plan other than attacking. Those few seconds of holding himself back cost him a tremendous amount of effort, and when he finally unleashes his pent up energy he does so like a cork from a bottle of champagne.

As is usual for Ignatz, he has his eye on whichever target looks most dangerous. He pounces on one of the nobodies, and launches toward the edge of the pit leaving a the poor mook broken in his wake. Warfryn took a deep breath.  He had not realised how much danger he was going to get into by following his patron.  The kobolds and Irontooth were bad enough but this lot...

His nerves led him slightly astray and he was very slow in responding to the sudden onset of violence.  He skittered to one side and tried to get cover behind a large rock before starting his attack.

Once set behind his sheltering rock he cast his Warlock's Curse onto the nearest little dragon thing, following that up with a blast of powerful eldritch energy.

"Let's hope that does the trick" he whispered to himself.

Suddenly as he attacks and misses the spirit, grasping claws of smoky shadow rise up out of the ground and holds his legs as the spirit laughs at him.
"You are too late - you can not stop us!" It vanishes and appears some distance away while the claws hold him in place.

The skulk laughs and with a magical twist, vanishes in thin air.
The slinger sees the roaring halforc and turns as he is caught and grabbed. Laughing he slings at him. Three stones fly at him but only one hit his temple hard.
The drakes and hired swords advance at Saskan and the group - two of them strike at him!
One hits with the club and bruises Saskans arm slightly.

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

The drakes snarl and bite back, one bleeding heavily.
The rabble falls and the spirit snarls and vanishes in a flash leaving Ignatz behind as the claws appear from the ground. However, missing he is but out of sight, appearing near the slinger whom again tries to strike him but also narrowly misses.
Ignatz notices a figment of a person appear, too late, as it sinks in a heavy blow on Saskan.
However, the tides are shifting and whole Kbenjar is fighting for his life, the battle rages on!

Re: The Kobold Lair - Gardbury Downs

Malph's strike finished the first drake and Warfryn's warlock power kicked in.  He teleported over to the right hand side of the crater, once again half hiding amongst the rocks and the shadows.

A quick look round and his actions were clear.  He summoned Witchfire onto the remaining drake and added to it the damage from his existing curse.  Turning his attention to the fleeting image of the skulking creature he called down the challenge of Corellon on the fiend.  Perhaps it would at least impede it in its attacks.

His work was almost over.  Another glance saw Ignatz almost finish off the little slinger...just not quite enough!  Warfryn took a deep breath to control his breathing and fired off an Eldritch Blast at the slinger, hoping to free Ignatz from that particular combat.

As he smote the beast down, he sensed the second one was not as confident now.  His nephew shouted out as he was ambushed by the assassin and called for aid.  Shifting away with shield drawn to fend of any attacks by the remaining drake, he rushed towards the assassin looking to bring him down.  Driving forward with unrelenting attacks, his first swap pushed the fiend back, and the second sent him flying back, down for the count with a battle cry, "Loreat Vilklvi!" The spirit howls out and strikes at Malph but misses as his blow rains down on it, and causes it to drop to the ground, annoyed. For it, fortunately, the blow seem to lack potency against it's incorporeal frame.
The drake spits blood and bite at Ignatz how gravely wounded it but fail to produce much for the effort, gasping for air and feeling the weight of it's injuries.

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

Consider the last post void.

In a ferocious turn of events the spirit vanishes in a shriek as the last dragon fall heavily to the ground.
It is then you notice two things. Kbenjar breaths barely and his arm is partial torn off. He is in dire straights..
The skulk, coughs, raising it's hand.
"Save me...and I will promise you riches and information......You have my word!"

Checking the ground behind you, you notice a large crater, about twenty feet deep, but with easy paths down to the bottom of it.
You notice, quite surprisingly, that there are large bones sticking out. A dragon...most certainly.(Which type can be detailed with Nature Dc 16).
You also discover numerous other bones, human and others that are strange, twisted and demonically warped. The dragon burial site is the spot where a large battle between Karavakos’ hordes and the Nerath Empire, trying to close the rift to Shadowfell, occurred.
A battleground.
Whoever comes first, discover a small indenture, leading to a small door or latch, which can be opened with some strength into a smaller settlement, or housing...Curious but appears to be a previous settlement used by the proprietors of this place.

OOC:
Regardless of your choices, this combat has risen you all to level 2!

"Nope!  Nope!  Too big!  Eugh!  Who would want that?"

He wantonly tossed things aside until he found something that he thought he could use.  And by the time the others had pushed their way in, Warfryn was sitting on a rotted wooden chest brandishing a wicked looking rod and a worn-looking set of leather armour while a shimmering medallion hung around his narrow neck.

Ignatz laughs cheerfully at Warfryn's eagerness. He's completely exhausted, but happily sets to work immediately, carrying armload after armload of artifacts and goods up and out back to the edge of the crater. Something in that load catches his eye- a small, dark glass bottle of honing oil with a bright gold badge set in a wax seal. "Reaver's... "Hm!  Interesting!  It looks like this oil can make your weapon even beefier than usual.  I think you just rub it on when you are going to fight."

He squinted into the bottle to see how much was in it.  "I don' know how long it lasts for though, or how many times you can use it.  I suppose you'll find that out in time."

He turned to the amulet and racked his little brain for information.  At last, a light dawned.

"Hey!  This is a good 'un for you, my lad.  You can wear it as an amulet round your neck and when you charge away from one enemy to attack another, that first enemy can't take a swipe at you.  I think this must have been made with you in mind."

Gasping for air, you notice the skulk make a final move to a crate you had yet to discover. He takes a final breath and exhales. There is a small mark on it, and a small book on top of it.

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

With some strength you pry open the crate, and inside find various items.
A small vial, with a reddish liquid, appearing like a fine brandy or wine, various metallic stones and bones of various sorts, a small skull and curiously a small mirror.
Looking at the mirror facing you, you notice the silver mirror is tarnished and when you look into it you find your reflection grayish and misty.
Suddenly you see your face but it is like a dark corrupted version, glaring out at you with white skin and eyes shining with malice.

As he eyes the book, it appears to Warfryn to be a logbook of his work. A few passages stand out.
“Bairwin hired us, as he wanted to ensure that none of these relics found at the site leaked out of here. He especially asked for that mirror over there in that crate. I don’t know why. It was Bairwin who told me where to find it, and payed us well to keep our mouths shut, claiming dark involment. Also his spy in town, knew more of various locations, including the den of kobolds we should stay clear of - due to a higher purpose.."

Further down...
“When I set out to dig, I had thought this was the burial site of some old dragon. However, the skeleton of the dragon is intermingled with other remains and skeletons from many lesser creatures, many of them looks to be demonic in origin. It seems as if this is the site of some old battle, rather than a burial site. I can only wonder were these demons came from and what could have been worth fighting over in this remote place.”

1) The Kobolds were connected to Kalarel and to the cult of Shar, given the symbols we found.  We have some amulets to prove it.

2) Bairwin, the merchant, is some how connected to all of this. It's hard to tell if he's just taking advantage of the situation or is part of the conspiracy in full.  But if Old Sara is missing and his business is profiting, one can make some assumptions.

3) There is an unknown spy in Winterhaven, proved by two separate sources: the letter and this diary."

He replayed the events in Winterhaven in his mind.  Saskan and Malphuriuos had independently reached the likely location of the kobold lair through their discussions at the fighters guild and triangulating their raids to a central point.  But it was Warfyn who discovered the exact location.

"So Warfyn.  You learned of the exact location during our time in town.  Who did you learn it from and could that be our spy?"

"Perhaps the Lord will let you do the literal shakedown.  But I would advise that we share this intel with Lord Padraig first and let him decree what should happen.  We don't want to overstep our bounds and wind up on his bad side," Malphurious cautioned.

"But this bag of heads and hands should brighten his mood," he said with a fang-bearing smile.

Warfryn looked up and dusted himself off - his new armour was a little grubby after all.

"Ey?  What?  Oh, the map.  It was an elf humter at the inn.  Nonny Nin?  Ninnian?  Something like that.  I was asking about the kobolds and it was her who said about seeing them at the waterfall.  She even sat down and drew that map.  That was good of her, weren't it?  Didn't have to do that.  So I don' reckon she could be the spy if the spy and the kobolds was workin' thegether".

Unusually he paused to draw breath and then started again.

"But maybe there's more than one side.  They do say, the Gods that is, that evil is against everyone, so maybe even other evil ones..."

He stopped short and looked puzzled for a few seconds before brightening again.  "But maybe this BArwin chappie will tell us what we needs to know.  Can we go get him now?

Saskan grinned back at his uncle, they'd done well, come close to dying a few times, but it wasn't a true fight until your blood had been spilled, the key was not spilling too much.

"I don't see why we can't," the big dragonborn  replied to Warfryn's question. "Unless Malph or Ignatz have something else on the agenda for when we return."

Ignatz looks like he's thinking hard, and the effort this requires shows. "Well hy tink hy get vhat Malph'z sayin about Padraig. Mebbe ve jus grab Bairwin first and bring him vit uz, so he ken't run avay, but ve don't rough him op til ve gets Padraig's say so?"

Re: Burial grounds - Gardbury Downs

"Well, it might not be bad for one of us to deliver the bounty and intel to the Lord and the others to keep tabs on the two suspected conspirators.  That way, if they catch wind of their detection and are seemingly ready to leave, they can intervene," Malphurious said in a method of compromise between ridgedly following the legal process and near outright vigilantism.
