Re: Sea of Shadows

It dawns on the group that the binding ritual and the shadowy Binders themselves ignore damage, bleeding and any pain in the state they are in, as immobile pillars for the time being. They do not act nor appear hostile and are forcefully binding the mages to the field as part of the ritual.

Suddenly, a large shadowy cloud appears and blinds those within(see map), followed by heavy thudding sounds. In the distance, another area vanishes in heavy darkness and the sound goes towards it. You are still blind to what happens.

OOC: The black squares with white trims are globe of darkness's and cause blind as long as you are within.

Nezumi's form grows and changes as she charges out of the darkness towards her target. Her blade reforming just as she swings it at the unmoving Binder even as her ears and tail have yet to return from their mouse-like forms.

Move: C11 to C10
Minor: Return to Human form
Standard: Unraveling Strike 32 vs AC 26, hit for 14 phys, 7 cold, and inflicting Vuln 3 Cold until EoNT on the Binder at C9

Re: Sea of Shadows

The cloud of darkness was a bit of a problem. Rynoth found his way through it and turned his attention northward, trusting the others to handle the nearby shadow binder while he assisted Nezumi with the other. A ward upon her, and a charge hurled at the binder, produced quite a flash and a bang - and a fresh opportunity for the former against the latter.

Now, if the dragon would do them the courtesy of staying out of it for a little while longer...

Minor: Resistive Formula on Nezumi. Nezumi gains a +1 power bonus to AC until the end of the encounter. Nezumi can end the bonus as a free action to gain temporary hit points equal to her healing surge value + 3.
Move: Walk to E12.
Std: Smokepowder Detonation vs Binder C9 hits for 15 fire damage and ongoing 5 fire damage (save ends).
Free: Nezumi makes a melee basic attack vs Binder C9.
Probably doesn't hit: AC 21 for 17 damage and 10 cold damage.

14:38, Today: Rynoth rolled 27,15 using d20+11,2d8+7.
16:11, Today: Rynoth rolled 21,17 using d20+16,2d4+10.

Re: Sea of Shadows

As the mage breaks free, it fires a bolt of sheer energy at the foe before it.
Pushing it back, he is able to breath, but the foe is ever attentive to the mage and focuses on reclaiming power over him.

A dark ray of energy hits the mage - whom is stuck again, unable to move. However the mage via unnatural sources resists! And is able to withstand the sway of the foe!

Effects: Mage hits binder for 10 damage, binder hits mage for 20 damage, and traps him again.

OOC: The black squares with white trims are globe of darkness's and cause blind as long as you are within.

Re: Sea of Shadows

EDIT: added crit damage dice for the binder and the attack roll for the mage

Nezumi's whiffed attack continues to swing around in a full circle gathering the snow white elemental energies of ice before shattering on the shadow binder. The ice swirls around in the air for a moment gathering the golden elemental energies of light before coalescing on Nezumi as a suit of armor while she begins to slowly circle her prey. Just as it seems she's done with her assault for the moment she suddenly thrusts once more. As her final thrust misses she inhales deeply, consuming the ward Rynoth placed upon her.

Standard: Armor of Winter's Grasp; Crit vs Fort; 33 Cold damage (after vuln), and Slowed save ends; Nezumi gains +2 Power to AC and Fort until EoE
12 vs Fort of Mage for 21 cold and slow save ends if it somehow hit, 10 cold if it missed
Minor: Emerald Shield; Until EoE Nezumi gains +2 Shield to AC and Ref and can use Emerald Shield reaction at-will.
Move: Shift C10 to B10
AP: Unraveling Strike; 21 vs AC; dammit no Fire Vuln
Free: End Res Form to gain 17 THP

OOC: The black squares with white trims are globe of darkness's and cause blind as long as you are within.

Re: Sea of Shadows

"Through the darkness, I journeyed. The darkness and my instincts to flee at war with one another." Jhaartael walked through the field of darkness and managed his way out right behind Nezumi. He pointed his blade to the binder. "You! Foeg galu! You who embrace the lies of darkness, now endure its truth!"

Move: To B11, hopefully out of the Dark Ball.
Minor: None taken
Standard: 06:17, Today: Jhaartael rolled 24 using 1d20+9.  Unluck vs Reflex at Binder on C9.
The damage is irrelevant. I cannot deal enough Necrotic damage (1d8+6) to punch through that resistance...
...but I wasn't aiming for damage.
For the secondary effect, if the binder rolls a d20 before the end of my next turn, I can roll a d20 and choose to replace their roll with mine.
As for the tertiary effect, I choose Nezumi. If she attacks that target again before the end of my next turn, I can roll a d20 and choose to replace her roll with mine.

OOC: The black squares with white trims are globe of darkness's and cause blind as long as you are within.

The darkness enveloped Grock. He couldn’t see a thing, but he had experience fighting below deck on a slave ship with nothing but your chains to fight with. The half Orc swung his chains in a circle around him surely hitting the specter.

09:51, Today: Grock rolled 16 using 1d8+14.  Five storms damage.
09:50, Today: Grock rolled 28 using 1d20+13.  Five Storms attack.

Re: Sea of Shadows

Khalid adopts a determined expression and wades into the darkness. The glow from the blade of Prophet's Breath is doused, but the hum is still audible, replaced for a moment by a crack as it channels a spell though to no other clear effect.
Move: Walk to what might be next to the marked binder.
Standard: 22:13, Today: Khalid ibn Faizal rolled 20 using 1d20+9.  Sword burst +9 vs. Reflex 24 of binder. (It's a burst, so concealment doesn't penalize it.) Miss.

Re: Sea of Shadows

Rynoth retaliated against the shadow binder with a lightning-strike, warding the mage against some of the harm even as the sparks tore at the wraith-alike's form.

He wasn't done: while the general darkness and distractions made it difficult to discern just what it was that he might have released when he raised and thrust his hand out over the water as if casting something in the air there, the effect was felt almost immediately. Felt, and seen - though perhaps not-unseen would be a better term. It was disconcerting, perhaps, but not in a bad way... at least not to the company. The shadow binders - and anything else nearby - clearly felt it rather differently.

Immediate Interrupt (when the shadow binder hits the mage) Shocking Feedback w/Heroic Effort vs shadow binder hits for 12 lightning damage and the mage gains Resist 5 All until Rynoth's EONT. (Mage only took 15 damage from the shadow binder's attack.)
 - This does not provoke an OA from the shadow binder since it happens on the shadow binder's turn.

Std: Punishing Eye at E11.
 - This does provoke an OA from the shadow binder but Khalid's mark will affect the attack and Khalid's aegis of assault will trigger if the OA is taken. Also necrotic resistance, if applicable.
Move: None.
Minor: None.

Punishing Eye: You conjure an eye in a square within range. It lasts until the end of the encounter. Enemies within 3 squares of the eye do not benefit from concealment, and when an ally attacks an enemy within 3 squares of the eye and hits, that enemy takes 4 psychic damage. You can move the eye 3 squares as a move action.

Re: Sea of Shadows

You notice a roar above you.
Suddenly the shadows above you take form. From a gigantic stalactite in the roof a creature of nightmares releases its hold and comes diving down towards you on wings of gloom. A dragon of shadows and darkness unfolds above you, its eyes afire, and with bared talons of black ice. Its screech echoes across the cavern and freezes your hearts to ice, as if it had been the very horn of the ferryman of Styx.

Piercing down, it rains a gust of sheer cold that spreads before you, chilling you to the core. Yet, somehow the frosty breath, lay over you, inflicting little effect.
10 damage to Grock, Khalid and Rynoth(5 damage only due to resist).
The dragon remains in the air, closeby.

As before the binders remain in a trance, focused on their ritual and binding the captive mages.

"Jhaartael, I've got this one now. Give that overgrown lizard a bath!" Nezumi shouts as she takes advantage of the opening his attack left in the Binder's defenses to strike a grievous wound and freeze whatever sorry excuse it had for blood. Re: Sea of Shadows

"Cruelty begets cruelty, dragon." Jhaartael's orb pulsed with a demanding energy as he activated the magic within it, and he pointed his singing sword at the dragon, a high tone coming from the blade. His face was legitimately pained as he engaged in what he saw as a nasty business, and the awe in his voice was not a lie. "Know that downing a creature as majestic as you hurts me as well. Horne!"

Minor: Activating Orb of Indisputable Gravity.
Standard: 06:07, Today: Jhaartael rolled 26 using 1d20+9.  Compulsion vs Shadow Dragon.
06:13, Today: Jhaartael rolled 13 using 2d8+6.  Compulsion vs Shadow Dragon.
26 vs Shadow Dragon's Will.
13 Psychic damage total.
The dragon should crash into the water upon the spell hitting their mind, taking no damage fortunately for them, but being prone.

His voice turned to ice as he watch the dragon crash into the dark waters, knowing what his next command was an honest attempt at. "You wish to help drown the world in darkness? Go, and learn what it is to drown in darkness." He flicked his hand away and pointed his sword to the center of the lake.

At the beginning of the dragon's turn, I wish to slide it six squares to the center of the water and down into it below the surface, if possible. Bear in mind, that dragon is absolutely going to save out of this before it anticlimatically drowns, and it is probably going to be furious at me when it gets out of that water. But this should buy us a turn or two of not being bothered by it. I don't know if prone is going to mean anything while it is being pushed down through the water, but it has that condition in theory until it takes a Move Action to deal with that, too, which it cannot do until it saves first. Probably represents it trying to get its bearings.

Re: Sea of Shadows

As Jhaarteal rose the orb in the air, the dragon turned in anger, as if recognizing it.
Flying up, wings bashing heavily in the air, it struck above you as the orb hits it mind.
Heavily, its body gave out and begun soaring to the ground, and the middle of the pool where Jhaartael stood.
A sudden roar beneath his feet concerned him however - a maelstrom began to firm and swirl, creating a pitch black, shimmering hole in the middle of the pool. The dragon fell towards it, as the orb glowed strong - and in a heavy thud, pierced into the vortex and vanished with a gush of water flowing up, but more curiously the vortex vanished. The thud caused a wave to hit Jhaartael heavily and throw him back to the ground and the water, causing his skin to chill fully.
The cold is immense and overpowering!
(Please roll DC 20 Endurance check or suffer from Hypothermia!)

With the dragon dragged beyond vision, through the vortex to the shadowfell, a risk lesser appears before you. The rift, the one partially opened, is before you - but still not exposed nor a risk.

As the dragon pierces and its dominance and presence vanishes, the bond begins to fizzle - the binders start to loose powers and the mages, immense users of magic and prowess overpower and begin to vanquish their capturers.
With roaring fire and forceful energy the binders and thrusted through the vortex and the rift into the shadowfell and anguish - a calm befalls you.
Small shimmers of light appear around you, like stars in the night.
The mages partially collapse from strain.

The room is silent, and the water still around you, apart from a small army of inanimated bronze warders that stare, cold and lifeless, out in the distance.
The rift closed, the vortex draining, it seems that for now the shadowfell is concealed and closed and leaving no risk for anyone...aside the watcher in the tower who aided you here.

Some time passes and one of the mages, rises, worn and wounded, but clear enough to beckon you over.
"Thank you...eternally grateful. We should make haste back to the halls. We can take you there with us, and perhaps safely here, thank you properly for all you have done. Will you accept?"
-----
If there are no objections, the group will use the portal provided by the mages to venture back to the Seven Pillared halls - determining next options and whether the fabled Pyramid of Shadows you learned off, is the next objective in mind.

Jhaartael was stunned. He had not expected that to go that well. He actually needed to catch himself and stop himself from stumbling off the bridge out of shock - it was only the icy cold shock of the water that focused him back to his senses and the need to live life right now.

"Yes. Of course." He noticed Nezumi on his shoulder, and stood straight up, like he had planned for all of this, and focused his gaze back on the dark waters. "Revar aul-Adon, creature of darkness. May the world breathe a sigh of relief with your absence."

"I am ready to leave if the rest of you are."

Rynoth dropped low to better brace himself against the oncoming wave, and he stayed down for some moments even after it had passed just in case anything followed it. Only once the quiescence was certain did he rise and move to cautiously look out over the abyss beneath to briefly study the lingering energies there.

Then he stepped back and added his assent to the mages' suggestion. "Yes, let's away. We don't have the means to seal it fully just yet."

Re: Sea of Shadows

As you traverse through the created portal, you land heavily within a marbled and circular room, with tall pillars, and adorned drapings and offices and books everywhere.
You recall the place, and the dourfaced darkhaired man that appears - Orontor.
His smile and joy to see his brethren is extensive and his presence is strong towards them.
Banter traverse back and forth and many are taken further in to recover or be patched up.

Orontor turned and bowed his head.
"Thank you is a humble, and barely fitting set of words here. You have done great good and we can not show enough appreciation. However I must press a topic. Paldemar, his actions and next steps...is he gone for good...is there more threats?"
Regardless of the words, Orontor ensures to point you towards a room you have seen before, holding many wonderous artifacts and trinkets!

------
You all level up!
You get one parcel aka. a free magical item. This item can be of NEW level +1.
You can exchange and shift any artifact around to fit what you desire to have in terms of loadout.
You can shift class if you desire, but do PM me further on this if needed.
You do not need to make a great deal out of what you exchange and setup etc - I entrust you to do so as per rules and desire not to micromanagement.
A last request - a rollcall if you would - please provide a short update here, and state if you are keen to journey on as we are advancing into the H3 module - Pyramid of Shadows.
I ask since otherwise this is a key spot to get fresh blood. Please advise in honesty!

Re: Sea of Shadows

Gathering, Orontor stops before continuing.
"You." he points at Rynoth.
"You carry an item, which is likely not attuned to you but carry strings of allure to Paldemar and the order he is part of, aligned with the horrid lord of anguish - Orcus himself. I ask you, without anger, to hand it over, or better yet, follow. We must bind it, and learn how to dispose of it."

He points to a back room, circular and dark, and asks the large ogre bodyguard Bragg to stand watch.

Inside there is sparsely lit light.
In the middle, a metal circular object lay circled by candles and deep white dust.
You are tasked to place the rod in the middle, and as you do sense how the rod claws as your skin and mind as you expose it to the world and try to remove it.
A voice beckons out in your head.
"Mortals..none deserve power nor life!"
The rod eminates as you try to place, and you feel unwell!
(Roll a DC 15 endurance check!)

With a thud, the rod hits the circular pan, and cloaked mages appear, humming and chanting. You sense a strong presence of magic.
DC 18 arcana to understand, DC 25 to partake.

You see and feel a strong presence of magic...but also how the room is almost alive, the wall dripping with a liquid you can not make out, as if something was watching or trying to grasps you or the room in fully....

OOC: Anyone can go in, or stay close and watch. Rynoth is FORCED in however.

Re: Sea of Shadows

Rynoth grimly held firm against the rod's insidious influence. It was powerful, but not powerful enough, and he wasn't about to be deterred by it in any case: disposing of the thing was why he'd come here in the first place, and if the rod or its master were raging against the spell, it meant that the spell was working.

Re: Sea of Shadows

As you chant along, it becomes obvious to all that the rite and ritual being performed is a high level banishment. In acknowledgement of what is within, or the power rather - the rod has to be bound and secured, and then what ever within has to be released.

Slowly, within sometime, the rod begins to crack and light up as if made of fiery iron, one crack appearing after another.
Suddenly, and without warning, a loud crack is hear, like a thousand claps of thunder rolling over you at once, and a numbing red light, like a firestorm emblazes the room.
The heat is almost unbearable, but you sense uneasiness as well.
The walls become a carpet of fire and the ground appears to crack.
In the crack, you see light, and within it, deep down, easily 25 feet large, you notice a figure, or at least an avatar of it.
It has strong bestial features: the horned, desiccated head of a ram, thick-furred legs and cloven hooves of a goat, massive, black wings of a bat, a great maw filled with tusks, and a long, thick, constantly moving tail, poison-tipped and covered in spines.

Whether an illusion, headtrick or manipulation is hard to say, but the image is that of the Lord of the Undead - Orcus.
In a rushed action, a large red hand appears just before you, grasping the cracked rod and yells so the walls almost crumble.
"I will find you...and exact my revenge...you will perish by might!!!"
The crack remains, but the light, and fire on the walls, slowly vanishes and you feel drained, numb, and confused, as the room grows dark again, as dramatically as it appeared.

A powerful enemy has you in sight...

You eyed about, wondering what to do next..

Re: Sea of Shadows

Rynoth stared at the spot where the manifestation had briefly appeared, a slowly clouding his features, before he finally uttered a low and unusually hard-sounding, "Like you and yours ever intend anything else," toward that same empty space, his lips briefly peeling back in tandem with the sharp finality of the declaration.

He regained his composure over the span of a breath steadily taken, and, rather more calmly, looked around at the assembled mages. Whatever the demon lord's threats, they'd collectively made rid of the artifact, and coming on the heels of Paldemar's defeat and the closing of the Shadowfell rift, was quite a capstone. Thunderspire still had plenty of problems, and the mages themselves undoubtedly needed time to fully recover from their experience, but... the situation was finally on the mend.

He and the others could do with a bit of respite, but it was less clear what would follow. There'd been some suggestion of following up on Paldemar's writings about the pyramid, but he wasn't entirely convinced that it was wise to chase the phantoms of a mad cultist's mind; even if the place was real, there was no guarantee that it was what Paldemar thought - or that what Paldemar thought was worth seeking was anything that they wanted to pursue...
