On the road - Wimterhaven bound!

--Once you make way from the inn--

Gevarn rises and stretches urging you forward.
Walking outside, he eyes you - and asks coy-fully.
"I have sadly not seen any trade wagons or horses for hire around here, but what do you reckon? Should we give it another look or get going by foot? It is a beautiful trip!"

On the road:
The road to Winterhaven is best taken by following the large traderoute; The King's road.
The wind is cool and comfortable. The road beneath your feet is level. An occasional ancient cobblestone peeks through the dirt road, indicating decades of neglect.
Gevarn takes heavy strides, moving with surprising ease and feeling jovial for a change.
The sun is high, and you have plenty of daylight to work with, having traveled for but a few hours.

OOC: This is fairly open, so detail how you are travelling, and how you decide to take stops and camp etc. It is a four day trip so you have to have some consideration in play here.

On the road - Wimterhaven bound!

"Someone forgot to mention it was going to be four days by foot," Malphurious grumbled as they continued down the dirt road.  The old warrior was much more spry than he's constant complaints of aches and pains would indicate, but the grumblings were always good natured.

"Anyway, Gevarn, tell us of some of the key players in Winterhaven.  Who are the Who's Who? I think that's the phrase you humans use," Malph asked the old acolyte.

On the road - Wimterhaven bound!

Gevarn chuckled.
"Quite a question, but let me try and answer!"
He rubbed his chin.

"Winterhaven is run by Ernest Padraig, the Lord of Winterhaven, is descended from the noble family that ruled the area under edict of the old empire. Folks around Winterhaven were happy with Lord Padraig’s father’s authority, and they have found answering to the rules of the new lord no more arduous. On the other hand, Padraig doesn’t have absolute power. For instance, he has been unable to raise a force from among the villagers to deal with the kobold problem
on the road. It is troublesome but he is liked greatly aside though.

Then we have Sister Linora, bless her heart, she prefers to travel among the homes outside
the walls, dispensing care to villagers and animals and helping with various farm projects.

Salvana Wrafton owns Wrafton’s Inn, and it serves as a hub of delicious specialities and also as a gathering place for travelers and information. It is wortwhile to be on her good side, even if she can be a bit...stern at times.

There is, Rond Kelfem, captain of the Winterhaven Regulars, also overseeing the Warrior Guild. The local militia if you would. He and Padraig don't always see eye to eye. Resources you know.

Oh yeah, how could I forget. His honorable....Valthrun the Prescient.
Valthrun is a sage and scholar who lives in a tower within Winterhaven’s walls. Valthrun
is knowledgeable about the area and is knowledgeable and quite the listener, I have heard."

He nods, confident that the lay of the land was somewhat clearer for them going forward and also illustrated the vast knowledge the man held.

Saskan listened intently and then broke in, "So the chief and his warriors aren't always on the same page and their is both a religious and arcane faction. And a pleasant sounding Inn. Let's stop there first, but I am glad to have a nice lay of the land. Gevarn, am I right to assume Sister Linora is the person you "report" to?

Saskan kept pace with his uncle easy enough but he was always surprised to see how limber he remained at his old age. He hoped he would age as well.

On the road - Wimterhaven bound!

Ignatz's yellow eyes glaze over as he tries in vain to follow Gevarn's relentless list of proper nouns. He quickly takes to scouting ahead of the party for likely campsites and sources of fresh water, doing as much foraging as he can without venturing out of earshot of the party. It's not uncommon for the rest of the group to see him bound off into the woods, too energetic to restrain himself to the party's reasonable pace, and then to hear the half-orc roar and crash through the brush to cut short some boar's panicked squealing. By the time the sun is threatening to set, Ignatz will likely have two sizeable carcasses and a good idea of where they can find water.

Kbenjar keeps to the road but is happy enough to walk the whole trip. He occasionally takes a swig of his whiskey to keep up his spirits, but lets the energetic half-orc do the looking out for trouble.

Warfryn has only little legs...add to that, that he is mainly a townie gnome and not one of the 'country cousins'.  SO all in all he is not having a great time.  Fortunately he is quite a tough little fellow and although he sometimes falls behind the longer legs of the others, he is never too far behind.

Gevarn nodded.
"Aye, she leads the union of Chauntea within Winterhaven and is the mbodiement of a person with her priorities in check. She cares for all who enter and stays clear of politics, albeit she is more clever than the lot of them if you ask me. Perhaps that is why!"

The first day passes by and Ignatz finds a calm place of the side of the road, just beyond the thicket, which provides cover from those outside on the road(thus not being able to peak in as well), and with some meat to add to the festivities. A nearby spring provides some needed water and they should be well in place for the night. Gevarn nods and lays down calmly against his backpack and eyes up at the stars.

OOC: You should consider two things when on the road. Especially roads which has been labeled as bandit and greenskin heavy.
- A marching order, who is first etc.
- If you rest or sleep, who takes shift and how long?

Re: On the road - Wimterhaven bound!

OOC: Proposed marching order is Mal, Saskan, Warfryn, and Kbenjar, with Ignatz as a forward scout. Do we want to do three shifts of two hours each, with two out of three shifts having two lookouts, and eight hours of total rest time? If so Ignatz can take the last watch by himself, and recommend Mal/Saskan and Kbenjar/Warfryn as the two pairs.

After a short stint of pleasantries, the party took to a hard march, hoping to make Winterhaven as soon as they could.

Re: On the road - Wimterhaven bound!

On the road, you are reminded shortly of you task initially, now a further added to the mix.
quote:
Before departing, you were all in some manner, contacted by the church of Bahamut.
They had recieved dire news from a holy spring of near Winterhaven.
An evil artifact, only known as the Rod of Ruin, that had been hidden for centuries by the Church of Bahamut has been stolen and the shrine defiled.
No one alive remembers the Rod’s purpose and if any records of this existed, they are now lost.
All of the monks guarding the Rod were killed and brought back as vile zombies, save one. A survivor and witnessed a small group of death cultists steal the Rod and then leave for Winterhaven.
He heard a name being mentioned, a name he thought was the name of the dangerous and twisted high priest of the cult - Kalarel.
They suspects that this Kalarel has set up a secret cult in the area and is conducting unholy ceremonies, and fears what he might do with the Rod. She asks you to travel to Winterhaven, determine if there is any death cult activity in the area and, if so, to stamp it out and bring back the Rod of Ruin.

Something is rotten there. That is for sure.

Night falls, and you take turns setting camp and getting sorted.
You find a calm spot, and the night passes without many events - there are wolves about, as their howls pierce the night ever so often, but few predator animals it seems this close to a trade route. There is also relatively few you have met on your trip, who wasn't an outrider or similar man of the law. An ideal trip...so far.

Morning dawns, and you all feel rested.
Gevarn is up early, and sits composed, and have been for some time. He rises, nods and walks to a hot jar, pouring a warm and steaming liquid. Tea.
He nods to you lot, and allow you to get sorted and fed.
"Long day ahead. We are getting closer and these areas are not as kind so eat well and get sorted, so we can leave when you are prepared for it."
He sits again.

Warfryn gobbled down some trail rations and topped them off with a long swig from his waterskin.

"I'm ready too" he said, as he hoisted his pack onto his back.
