Yes on that front I was figureing that out, however unlike other systems that have a starting gold by level option, I can't find one for 5E or I'm just blind to it so I'm just gonna hand you all 750 Gold worth of requisition  points to represent your postion as newly initiated Inquisitoral agents. You won't have any actaully bonus gold but it can be kept as a seperate currency.

Nyenna's social skills are limited to intimidation and lying, and her definition of diplomacy is holding a gun to someone's head until they give her what she wants. So she may have decent Charisma, but it's probably best for her to not be a face.

My character, Nyenna, is a half-elf gunslinger and former gang enforcer who killed an Inquisitor's apprentice, invoked Klingon Promotion on his mentor, and then hunted down her fellow gang buddies. Advantages include sharp eyes, the fastest draw in the Empire, and nerves of fucking diamond; disadvantages include Chronic Backstabbing Disorder.

Vampires, Blackguards, where is everyone getting these from?

When a mommy or daddy Vampire loves someone enough to bring them into the Immortal Night, they drain of them of blood then feed them their own. They'll repeat this process many times until the new Vampire opens their eyes and sees the crimson perfection of it all.

We come into the world screaming and covered in blood. I like people leaving it the same way.

Blackguards are from Unearthed Arcana and the GM found a page that had Vampire PCs that were more balanced. Other pages had them set up as pretty much God Mode from the gate.

Yeah pretty much, although the UA for Blackguard equates to Oath of Treachery while here I'm just calling any Evil Paladin a Blackguard.

Its not as strong as another I came across that literally says "Here's all the powers now go eat people." But it was the most balanced base I could find to work with.

The one I originally found had all of the stats at 18 with the lowest being 16. Wee bit unbalanced, that one was.

Well there is the downside of classifying as undead fornthe purposes of spell effects, class features and weapon powers that would activate with undead so while Lilith may have a few powerful things she is still weak against these type of things.

It's weird that it's not vulnerable to radiant damage.

Regenerate 3 hp each turn is balanced? No vulnerability to radiant damage and less of a disadvantage in direct sunlight than a drow? This feels really OP, to say the least.

It seems to me that the vampire will want to operate as much at night as possible, and as the only (?) character without darkvision I'll want to do the opposite. How will we resolve that?

Intrestingly, healing magic apparently works just fine on this vampire. And it can't be killed, rising at 1 hp every time it goes down. Why do we need the other characters?

Yes, but those potions are strictly personal, I expect others to take their own potions.

I did not realize Vampires didn't take damage from sunlight.

That and 3 hp a round are way too OP.

Yeah, sunlight should at the very least suppress supernatural abilities, like in Dracula.

Why don't we just try it and see how it works?
Okay, the Vampiress is strong, but the DM has ways to make her disadvantages become a nuisance to her, to balance it.

It doesn't take much experimentation to see that a character that regenerates 3 HP per turn and can't be killed except by exceptional means is unbalanced. I'm really not after a game of a vampire and her expendable henchmen so I think I'll pass on this game. See you all around.

It's the Superman problem.

It's hard to write a story about Superman, because he's invulnerable and unbeatable.  So in order for there to be any threat, you have to come up with ways to take away his powers.  You have to make him NOT Superman.  Yes the DM could spend all their energy making sure that each and every encounter is crafted in such a way that it nullifies the Vampire's powers, but then what's the point in having a Vampire in the first place?  Why have this massive source of imbalance in the game at all.

3/hp a turn is a HUGE advantage for a level 3 campaign, and there aren't any weaknesses built into that.  There is no "damage from fire or radiant is doubled, and cannot be regenerated in this manner."  It's just there, making the player essentially unkillable while the rest of us mere mortals bleed and sweat and die around them.

Moral of the story. Vampires rule.

This is exactly why I never liked Superman. The people who created him gave him way too many powers, so they had to bend over backwards to create any semblance of tension.

When you use plot contrivance to make your character win, it's favoritism. When you have to resort to plot contrivance to make your character lose, or even have a remote chance of losing, it means you've made them too powerful.

Oath of Treachery, on the other hand, both looks fun as hell and isn't game breaking.

Oh boy I go away for a day and I find that letting letting a vampire PC in has caused a bit more friction than I had intended.

Okay so to cover some points here as mentioned I am in the process of tweaking it to be both more fair and true to Lore.

1. The regen is offset by the fact that; as stated by a couple of you, Lilith cannot regain Hitpoints from Positive Energy based healing spells (or rather anything that isn't Inflict Wounds) and the regen ceases to function when in contact with direct sunlight.

2. Vampires in the MM are also not vulnerable to Radiant damage so giving her that as a weaknesses when a base Vampire doesn't have it would be unfair, however contact with direct sunlight does have an effect and as such I will be putting that in, the damage is pretty high and could still quite easily kill her at this level if she spends consecutive rounds in direct sunlight.

I've been in love with Warlocks since 3rd edition.

They are a blast. I have a few campaigns I've run and for some reason the Big Bad Evil Guy pretty much always ends up a Warlock.

My favorite usage was I had this long janky stone bridge over a chasm leading to a summoning circle. Total epic boss fight.

Pc's had to pass a series of skill checks to make it over these sketchy gaps in the bridge. Meanwhile I'd have the warlock launch eldritch blasts from above with his repelling blast feat so if I hit they had to make a skill check or get launched into oblivion.

Knocked 2/6 pc's down into the abyss before they got smart and bum rushed him and crushed his face :(

Good times...

Question: have we done our apprenticeship together and thus know each other or are we strangers?

Me too. Thankfully, I've gotten over the tendency to focus on "I HAZ DEMON POWAHS" angst that I had when I played 3E Warlocks as a young teen...

Hehe. I'm drawn to the dark, villainous, and misunderstood since I was a wee lass and have yet to grow out of it so I doubt I ever will.

A friend once told me he could easily see me fall to the Dark Side. I told him I would make a swan dive to the Dark Side so perfect I'd get a 10 from the Russian judge.

But the Dark Side is more fun. Less stuffy Light Side  BS. I mean Sith are more honest about everything....

Myself I always love weird characters. Minotaurs, kobolds, lizardfolk and what not. I think I've played a regular human once. thirty years or so ago with 1st ed.....

Balance to the force is complete bull if you think about it as balance implys both sides in harmory not one stronger than the other, I'd take the Gray Side anyday.

Finally got my character sheet mostly in order; still running through equipment. Nyenna's Strength and Constitution are a bit lackluster, but she makes up for it in Dexterity, and her mental stats are all pretty good. She made it on the streets by being just the right mix of smart, ruthless, and flat-out lucky.

I'm really torn between intimidation and arcana.  On one hand we don't really need intimidation, but it's just so in character with her whole thing.

Just because you are not proficient doesn't mean you can be intimidating. Especially with the help action in 5e you can give advantage and receive advantage pretty regularly.

I had a very definite idea in mind for this character which came after watching some of my favourites movies and programmes recently. Being home sick means plenty of time to write, watch, read, and sleep. Sometimes all at the same time.

I'm a bit partial to The Lord of the Rings myself, but The Dark Tower is definitely up there. Stephen King is a bloody genius. When I was a teenager, I pretty much wanted to be him. I've since come to recognize that trying to be someone else can only stifle my artistic identity, but I still consider Stephen King a huge influence of mine; his On Writing is one of the two books about writing that I consistently take suggestions from.

Speaking of The Lord of the Rings, Nyenna's name is actually Quenya, a variant on the name of the Vala Nienna. They aren't similar characters by any stretch, though; I mostly picked it because it's from the word "tear," and that seemed like something Nyenna's mother would slap on her That Thing Is Not My Child.

I didn't intend that comment to portray Nyenna as being "innovative" to use two guns. It's more a tie-in to the fact that (according to Word of DM) guns are rare and heavily-regulated in the Empire, so a common criminal having two of them would mean she either built them herself or stole them, and has managed to avoid being taken in by the authorities.

Very wise. Orson has been working as probably the shadiest, least reliable mercenary on the continent. The pay is... subpar.

Nyenna's gang had a significant presence in the black market, as well as a nice protection racket with the local populace. Before getting into the upper ranks, she was mostly involved in heists, territory disputes, and punishing people who didn't hand over enough coin. Her sadistic streak means the violence is kind of her favorite part; she loves the smell of gunpowder in the morning.

Swindling rich people is certainly a cause Nyenna can get behind, but her approval wouldn't gain you any trust. Being a paranoid near-psychopath with Chronic Backstabbing Disorder makes trusting people hard by default, so anyone she knows to be a con artist can pretty much let go of any hope at gaining her trust. They also walk a very fine line between her considering them useful or dangerous.

Definitely not a spy for an entirely different distant land posing as a soldier in order to gather information about the outside world without revealing any personal details about the culture and society of their own homeland.  Nope, that would be way too convoluted for a DnD game, best keep it simple.

Marakia is mostly about hitting things very hard with magic.

My partner is an art director for a mobile games company.

They've done more character and backstory generation than I can possibly imagine, even with the 20+ years that I've been playing tabletop.  All I told them was "I'm playing a Warlock with deception, arcana, insight, and perception maxed out and the Far Wanderer archetype, would you help me come up with a cohesive backstory?"  They went from there.  It eventually morphed into a Faction Agent, but I have the most fun in any tabletop when I have a very clear idea of who my character is and why they are doing what they are doing.  99% of my character's backstory will likely never come up in this game, but as a result of all of it I know exactly how they are going to react to all of you, how they will react to the world in general, and why they would want to be with the party (so many people make moody loners for their games where at the end of the day it's like "why is your character even here?"  Luckily this game doesn't have that problem).

Very nice, Makaria. I'm the same way when it comes to my characters. I tend to write short stories about them which sometimes get shared with the rest of the group but I find some mystery makes for better storytelling and we, even as players, are telling a story.

That is really cool. I have'nt really been playing for very long, but I really like making up character concepts,  though i usually focus more on the mechanical side (stuff like, "Oh, a dwarven dual wielding dex fighter would look really cool, etc.) I can honestly say that I'm not that strong at making a really good backstory/motivation, but I really enjoy this kind of thing and am trying to learn the process.

Oh this is 100% me.  I make a build that I think it will be fun to play first, and then after I go in and try and construct a cohesive narrative for it.  My partner is just better at that second part then I am, so I get them to help me write.  Plus then they are included in what I'm up to, so it's a win win.

I am a serious backstory addict, hence all the stuff about Nyenna's issues. Writing short stories about my characters' backstories is a thing that happens almost inevitably. Sometimes my characters' friends and family members end up with backstories of their own, compete with their own short stories... it spirals. I also tend to base the character's stats on their backstory rather than the other way around. I have done pure powergaming exactly once, and it was to give the a munchkin DM a taste of his own medicine. (That character one-shotted a fucking dragon.)

Nyenna is the child of an Imperial noble and one of his elven slaves, both of whom pretty much hate her for existing. Being treated like shit her whole life has made her bitter, cynical, and vindictive, and the fact that that attitude helped her escape from slavery and carve out a life on the streets only reinforces that. It also gave her a deep-seated need to prove herself, though she'd never admit that other people's opinions matter to her in the slightest.

In essence, what Nyenna's personality boils down to is the archetypal bully: someone who knows what it's like to feel powerless, and inflicts that on others so that they can feel powerful.

Yes! King is a huge influence on me! On Writing is a brilliant book and has helped me immeasurably.

I'm also a lover of all things Eldritch Horror and can reread Lovecraft over and over.

I did think that Nyenna sounded Quenya. I'm guessing that you have also read the Silmarillion from cover to cover?

I am also a huge fan of Lovecraft, particularly the stories I find especially weird like The Color out of Space and The Whisperer in Darkness, though there are stories of his that I don't like as much (for example, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family, in which Lovecraft's racism comes through way too much). Edgar Allen Poe is also a favorite.

I've read all three books of The Lord of the Rings (including the appendices), The Hobbit, the Silmarillion, Ainulindalë, the Valaquenta, Akallabêth, and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age, as well as a good number of Tolkien's letters.

Orson's player might make the argument that you'd need an insight roll there, opposed by their deception.

Spell Rounds: At third level an Arcane Gunslinger begins to create modified rounds which hold special magical and elemental projectiles. There are six different types of elemental rounds; Cold, Fire, Electrical, Sonic, Acid, and Poisoned. Every hour, an Arcane Gunslinger can craft 6 rounds of any one element and requires materials detailed in the following chart. Additionally, each hour requires a craft (rounds) DC check to successfully create. Failure results in the loss of all crafting materials. These modifications can be made to any type of bullets the Arcane Gunslinger can and has made.

I played one of these back in my 3.5 days and it was a blast. (pun intended)

Right now it would be just after sunset and it would take about about 30 minutes to get to the docks from your postion.

Goltinder can easily use his background feature as he has intended.

i think it's because technically they both try to set your base AC to a particular number. So the natural armor sets it to 13+DEX, and then unarmored defense tries to set it at 10+DEX+CON. So one overrides the other. The thing that I'm not sure about is which one wins out, but I think they should both work together.

Supposedly they are ment to work seperately in case you end up with a Con or Wis reduction for whatever reason, so that it can give yoy a buffer if affected in that way.

Seeing that I made a race in my own setting that has a Natural armour trait I can see why they did it this way, however I'm not a fan of it.

Should I assume that the public in the tavern or pub is pleased with the performance,

and then describe how Goltinder intends to get information about the cult from the guests?

At second level Blood Hunters choose a Fighting Style. I chose Two Weapon Fighting. When engaged in two-weapon fighting I can use my ability modifier to add to the damage of the second weapon.

I applied Crimson Rite to my blades before battle was joined and we had moved into action rounds.

Don't worry I have it covered, a quick bit of Mathmatics and all dealt with, however Makaria is right about the Feat Requirement for dual wielding longswords unless I am missing somthing.

I believe you get the benefit if you choose the Fighting Style - part of the reason they did away with feats is because they folded them in to the classes.

It can be done on two blades/weapons as per the ability under the class. It is pretty brilliant when used. The two ends of a staff or pole arm can have Crimson Rite applied to each end.

As long as you take the hit point loss each time, yeah.  Two blades, 6 hp reduction at level 3.

I think Lilith just multiplied her sexiness in Nyenna's eyes. Nothing turns Nyenna on like eviscerating people she hates.

Nyenna's kind of similar. In a way, she's the most horrifying possible mix of her parents: elven grace and precision from her mother, sheer sadistic bloodlust from her father, and a good dose of arrogance from both. She considers shooting to be an art, and is extremely passionate about said art.

I have two - Bonnie and Bernice. They are sisters, and the only reason that we have them both is because when we went to get them, they were sleeping cuddled together. They still do that sometimes, although not as often. They are also very affectionate to the humans in the house, which is great.

I... am still not entirely sure what just happened. Saves aren't usually my strong point when it comes to dice luck, and for all my talk of rolling insanely well, I have never actually rolled two nat20s in a row. I mostly just roll in the mid-to-high teens and make d10's explode. That was... insane.

I have never seen two 20s on a roll with Advantage. That was bloody epic.

The only way it could have been more epic would have been if I rolled two natural 20s on a roll with Disadvantage. (There's even an achievement for that specific circumstance: "More Like 'Dis Advantage!'")

Rules as written are unclear if you know if someone cast Charm Person at you or not if you make your save.  GM, what are your thoughts?  Maybe an insight roll opposed by Lilith's Deception?

Thing about Charm Person is that the affected target knows they've been charmed after it wears off, however since it failed to take hold Nyenna would have felt some form of compulsion but fought it off which considering the double Natural 20 because of Half-Elf rules she would be able to guess that the effect but without an Arcana check or knowledge of how said spells are cast she would be unable to tell HOW Lilith did it.

Makaria on the other hand; that Insight would tell you it wasn't magic in the same sense as what you could perform if you had the spell, but it was magical in nature what Lilith tried to do.
