The following information is info that would be common knowledge and publicly available to both residents and travelers to Fildegarne.

Fildegarne is a large island nation, spanning some 400 miles North to South and again East to West, with several smaller islands dotting its coast. The lands here are generally forested and rolling hills, with the center of the land hosting broad mountain ranges and dormant volcanoes. Historians believe Fildegarne was formed long ago by volcanic activities connecting a cluster of tropical islands. This notion is further solidified by the over all dark colored volcanic soils that can be found on most of the land mass. While being primarily forested by deciduous and conifer bearing trees, the southern portions and especially outlying islands have a more tropical appeal to then. In the Southwest regions the foliage and flora come to an abrupt end as a desert of black sand with sweeping dunes encompasses the region, and ends at high cliffs overlooking the sea. The cliffs themselves are the same hues and shades of black as the desert sands, and often look smooth like onyx or dark glass. While the exact origins of Fildegarne offer civil debate, the religious debates roar with passion and fervor. Hypotheses such as Fildegarne being the worlds first cradle of life, and even ranging to a more philosophical explanation of the land mass being a sort of divine experiment are tossed to and fro.

While the exact origins are debatable, the geological aspects of Fildegarne have a more concrete narrative. There have been accounts from mines all over Fildegarne from human, dwarven, and gnomish activities that claim warm temperatures can be found when digging down to a depth of approximately 1 mile, which leads many to believe Fildegarne sits atop a massive reservoir of magma. The seas for many miles around Fildegarne are relative shallow and warm, and are host to standard nautical fauna commonly found in tropical seas and reefs.

The capitol of Fildegarne shares its name with the country, and is located somewhat center of the map just west of the snow capped Shattered Top, the largest mountain and inactive volcano in the land. The Shattered Top is said to be the origin of the volcanic activity that shaped the grounds, though activity within the mountain hasn't been reported or recorded for nearly a millennia.

The city of Fildegarne is encompassed by high walls, and plays host to a broad variety of civilized races, though humans make up the bulk of the populous. Near the center of the city is Fildegarne Keep, which is ruled by a king and queen. King Julius Ghendrake XIV is seen as a fair ruler, and as his name suggests, comes from a long succession and ancestors. The original tale of Julius Ghendrake the First settling on the land gives no account of where the Ghendrake name originates. As the first in his line was without a queen at the time of settling, he took a commoner to be his wife, and set about a tradition of kings bringing a common woman in to the fold as their first official act of office after coronation. It's no real secret among the court by now though, that through a host of open door events several years prior to coronation, many of the monarchs have their bride to be chosen well in advance. The actually public selection of a wife is more of a grand affair in which all the eligible maidens of proper age gather and celebrate as their king walks among them. The entire ordeal is kept in good taste as far as these affairs go, and the public is abuzz for weeks prior to and after the events. The original intent by Julius the First was an act of fairness, in showing his people that both nobles and commoners hold equal footing in the eyes of all the laws that bind them. Having commoners turned queen every few generations is seen as a boon to those not born in to luxury, as the queen is expected not to forget her origins and never forget her people. Fildegarian queens are often consulted for purposes of economy, official holidays, celebrations, and are given the power to grant pardons to those who have committed lesser offenses such as being behind on their taxes. Fildegarians hold the laws of liability in high order, so pardons from the queen are seen as great acts of mercy.
