The Rules (Read First)

Hello! Thank you for clicking on this - I really appreciate it. Anyways, I'd like to welcome you to Otherwordly. In this thread we'll be going over the two types of rules that make Windows games run smoothly: the house rules and the game rules. Keep in mind, these are all here to make sure that we have a fun and easy experience! So, without further ado, read on.

The Window

As the Windows Guide states, “Rules are a necessary evil for roleplaying,” Though I won’t be too strict about them (As Window allows for a lot of leeway) these are the law off the land. These rules are to help better our enjoyment of the game, and help us tell a better story overall. It should be rather easy to get the hang of these, as Window isn’t a complicated system. So let’s jump right in.

The Three Precepts
The Three Precepts are the core of any Windows game. They are meant to insure intelligence, and joy in the game. They are the three main rules, and should be kept in mind at all times.

“Everything about a Window character is described with adjectives rather than numbers.”
This precept makes the Window a highly unique system. For skills and traits you assign an adjective to your die number instead of a point value. Let’s say if the skill is swimming. Jenna “Is an above average swimmer (d12),” whereas Jimmy is “An incompetent swimmer (d30)”. Do you see what happened there? The lower the total amount of sides on your die is, the better you are at a task. But you don’t assign a number to it. You describe it.

“It is the actors responsibility to play their role realistically.”
This is possibly the most easy of the Three Precepts to understand, but the hardest to follow. The jist of it is that your character should react to a situation as a real person would. If you’re shot, you’re shot. You are not running a marathon - Unless that makes sense in the context of the story - You are probably in excruciating pain. If you just received the best birthday present you have ever received, you are happy.  See? It’s something that is both fun and easy, but can be hard in the context of the story. Your character should act like a real person is the bottom line.

“A good story is the central goal.”
This is the most vital, in my opinion, of the Three Precepts. Our goal is to, together, tell a story that is interesting. This is what makes the game fun. In a good story there is gradual character development, conflict, and so many more elements. Without the Third Precept the game is nothing.

Types of Rolls

There are four types of rolls in the Window. They are as follows:

Success Rolls:
A basic roll. You set a target, and if you roll that number or one under you succeed! The typical target for rolls is a 6 or under.

Contest Rolls:
Contest Rolls are exactly what they sound like. Two players roll a die, and whoever rolls lower wins.

Health Rolls:
These relate to the second, and third precept. The higher number you get the more hurt your character is. You can exchange one rung of health in order to recover from a particularly bad wound - At the risk that your character will be in more pain later on, or could even die later down the line.

Plotting Rolls
Plotting Rolls can fall under any of the three above categories, but are made by the entire cast o characters. Depending on the numbers each player gets the scene will play out differently.

House Rules

  • Be nice! No one appreciates someone who is rude in the OOC. Drama, in character, is fine.
  • Come to the GMs with any problems, thoughts, or ideas you might have. This is important. We want to make this game fun for everyone. So, if you need something, speak up!
  • Try to refrain from Meta-Gaming.
  • Don't Godmod.
  • This game will be rated mature. This means that you should not branch into Adult Territory. However if you cannot be "Mature", or feel uncomfortable at any point I will request that you take a break.
  • If you have/want to take a break or drop out, let the GMs and the OOC know.
  • If you have read this far put a :) as your RTJ's subject.
  • Have fun!
