The Earth

Life on Earth is a mystery. It’s origin, a topic of debate. However, slowly creatures evolved from one common ancestor to eventually populate the planet with a diverse array of species. However, over time the Earth has started to decay like a corpse. Starting with the Industrial Revolution, humans in particular, have polluted the planet, bringing life closer and closer to it’s eventual and inevitable end.

Fast forward to the year 2038. By this point, it is obvious to most, though not all, that climate change is real, causes dramatic and deadly changes in weather patterns, and will eventually lead to the demise of all life on Earth. The average temperature of the globe has already been elevated by a little over 2 degrees, which is enough to cause havoc. Amphibians were among the first creatures affected, though creatures like bees and migratory birds have slowly began to dwindle in numbers as well. Fish are washing up dead on seashores. Overall, the world is in a terrible position.

Politically the landscape of the globe has also changed. Most western countries only claim to be democracies at this point, when in actuality they are oligarchies with officials from a few companies constantly being elected into office. This has given a few powerful corporations almost complete free reign. However, even they recognize the crisis that Earth is facing… Admitting that the end for humans is likely near.

The Hoshi Group

The Hoshi Group was originally a Zaibatsu founded at the start of the Meiji Era, however, it has since left family and Japanese ownership to be owned by a larger Portuguese Company. Originally the Hoshi Group simply owned Convenience Stores and Department Stores.  However, they have expanded to become a major force in the technology, mining, and construction industries as well. Little is known about most of the Hoshi Group executives, including the elusive CEO and owner Arnaldo Monterosso, despite the fact that he contributes far more than one would imagine to charities he supports.

Sensou Defense is a family owned company. Originally solely a military contractor, Sensou Defense has moved from battlefields into hospitals, doctors offices, and homes with their expansion into the medical field and their production of companion robots. It is run by Director Hana Kimura out of the Shizumu Mega Pyramid, a project which she bought from the former Shizumu Corporation, outside of Tokyo. Though the company is fairly secretive about its operations it does do a lot of visible charity work. The Director has made it plain that her intentions are good and that she wants humans to be a successful species… At any cost.

Formerly a company solely focused on the production of food for the world, Ludwig Animosita - an Entrepreneur who was at first bought out by Tertiary Solutions and then rose to become the company’s acting CEO - has expanded the company to control the market for most utilities. Briefly, before a public disaster, the company was conducting an experiment known as Project Maze. This was shut down as a part of the image sculpting process when Ludwig was put in charge of the company. It is extremely easy to get a job with Tertiary Solutions due to how their products mostly focus on manual and intellectual labor, thus making them far more popular than Sensou Defense or the Hoshi Group image-wise.

The Expansion Project was the brainchild of the Hoshi Group, but was managed mostly by Sensou Defense and Tertiary Solutions. At first the idea was to find a suitable planet close enough to Earth to settle temporarily. However, the project happened to stumble upon the perfect world. One with a similar climate to Earth, water, and a breathable atmosphere. It turned on a similar axis so it had day and night cycles and no one part of the planet would be too hot or too cold. The soil was, presumably, fertile as well! There was just one problem… Even traveling at light speed it would take too long to reach the planet from Earth. Any humans aboard the ship would die over the 2,000 year - minimum - journey.

The solution was complicated. The Hoshi Group developed pods that would flash freeze humans - putting them in a dormant state for as long as needed - along with a type of ship that would last long enough for a group of humans to reach the potential colony. Seven of these ships were built, each fitted with three hundred capsules. Tertiary Solutions was tasked with figuring out what cargo each ship would need to start a successful colony. Sensou Defense, meanwhile, found and trained the candidates for each ship’s crew, including finding and preparing a captain for each ship.

The ships all left Earth in 2042… With the crew members entering a stasis, expecting the rest of their species to be extinct by the time they arrived on this strange new world.
