Re: Help me, help you.
Dear all,

Iíve been discussing the future leadership set up with Rae once Mesa is exited from this game and I think that we need to have a discussion about this between us so that all players have had a chance to put forward their thoughts and suggestions.

Itís probably important to say at this stage that, in my opinion, taking on the team leader role in a T2k game like this involves a significant amount of investment in time by the player who volunteers for the role.  From my perspective the leader character has a sort of assistant GM function in the game as part of their responsibility is to help the GM ensure that every player is involved somewhere in the story.  With this kind of game itís far too easy for a PC to be side-lined somehow which then frustrates the player.

Therefore whoever volunteers to take on the team leader role needs to understand the time commitment that it will involve.

I therefore think that we have three options on how to proceed with regards to a leader character in this game.

1. Someone bring in a new PC designed to take over the leadership role.

2. Someone from amongst the existing characters take over the leadership of the team, quite possibly regardless of rank if we are shifting to a desertion situation where rank doesnít matter.

3. Upon desertion we set up a collective approach to leadership amongst the PCs and take the risk of characters getting side-lined.

I donít have any preference for any of these three options (though I canít volunteer for either option 1 or option 2 myself as the time commitment is too great for me) but what do other people think?  Would anyone like to put themselves forward to take on the team leader role?  Or can anyone think of an alternative approach to the leadership of this game?

Ta,

Andy.

Re: Help me, help you.
Iím happy to volunteer for option 1 or 2 (with a strong personal preference for option 1). As some of you know Iíve been playing a leader in another T2K game for over two years now so I think I have a fairly good idea of both the time commitment required and what the position entails in terms of trying to keep everyone involved.

In reply to Mike Carswell (msg # 644):

I wish I had time to keep up with what I have now.  All three of my jobs have been eating up my non-online social life to where I have problems getting on here to post.  Whatever you feel easiest transition would be, works well.  Don't know what I can offer but, willing to put in what I can.

What do we need from Jorge, if anything at all?

I'm more than happy for Dave to bring in a leader character. In a game like this the Commander has to be able and willing to post more than others and Dave has shown he can do that over a sustained period of time.

Re: Help me, help you.

I'm going to post a partial turn and then put the game on hiatus until next weekend. My students have two weeks until the big Advanced Placement exam so I am going to try to run after-school review sessions Mon-Fri. My wife's father is the hospital now with pneumonia, pancreatitis, and kidney failure. Chances are pretty good that I'll be spending some of my after-work time there. So, my free time (what free time?) during the week will be seriously curtailed, hence the brief hiatus.

In the meantime, I'm going to be thinking about how to transition Mesa (and any other PC that is dead-set against "desertion") out of the game and bring in a new TL PC.

Regarding "desertion", when Mesa leaves, it could be with the understanding that those that remain are, in effect, a stay-behind team that will continue to gather intel as they help to develop a militia. Or not. Either way, I don't plan his departure to be acrimonious.

My absence during the week doesn't mean that y'all can't carry on here (IC and OOC). I'd like to have something new to come back to next weekend.

Re: Help me, help you.
@Spartan / Mark, the way I see it we've got three potential jobs

1. Try and calm down (sedate?) Ben Gerard
2. Interrogate the Mexican
3.  Make nice with whoever is in charge in Rincon (hopefully Jenny-Lou can point him / her out) and see what the townspeople want to do with the Mexican

I'm good with Mike doing 1 or 2. He's probably not the best candidate for 3. Any thoughts? Or do you want to do something different?

@All, re the prisoner, if the townspeople don't want to get involved the recovery team can take him with them when they leave.

Options include (but are probably not limited to):

1. Take him back to Hatch for further interrogation. At which point we still need to decide what to do with him long term (it's possible he could leave with Mesa but that's meta knowledge)
2. Shoot him once we're out in the desert
3. Other?

On an OOC level I'm leaning towards 1, primarily because once he's dead he can't tell us anything else.

If we do take him back to Hatch we'll take reasonable precautions to make sure he doesn't know where he is, i.e. finding a sack or something to hood him with during the journey.

Re: Help me, help you.
Good points.

1) Trying to calm Gerad is a good idea. That's Mile's job.
2) We secure and isolate the prisoner and ask the locals what they want done. We can offer to take him back to Hatch for interrogation and taking him back to base could be the reason why Mesa leaves, maybe he has intel on a group of Bandidos that's causing trouble oop north.

Re: Help me, help you.
Works for me - I'll sort out a post where Mike speaks to Ben (I keep wanting to type Gil!) Gerard tomorrow.

Random thought on the prisoner - if we want to take him back to Hatch it may be best to just tell the people in Rincon he'll be dealt with - if we give them a say in the matter and they say they want him hanged that makes taking them to Hatch potentially problematic.

Re: Help me, help you.
I'll try to get in a post tomorrow about Emily talking to the locals (i.e. #3) to see what they want to do.

For the Mexican, I'm assuming with the horse weight limits, dude will be walking (dope on a rope), so blindfold/hood could be problematic/highly entertaining.

Oh, yes. Sorry. He has some minor burns on his hands.

For me the PCs becoming a "Stay Behind" team would work best.

The journey into desertion therefore becomes something more protracted.

Does that work for others?

Re: Help me, help you.

The next turn will see everyone who wants to attend the initial meeting with the Mayor and chief of Hatch PD at said meeting. Everyone else can stay behind at the Beridze farm- an idea of how he/she intends to spend that time might be nice.

I will write and post something this weekend.

Starting next weekend, I'd like to resume a regular, more frequent turn rate of one turn every 2-3 days (at least two turns per week). If you can't handle that, Mesa's departure will provide us with an opportunity to remove your PC from the game without resorting to a bloody firefight.

Sorry guys, hit with back-to-back trials. I'll try and get caught up this weekend. Judges are trying to clear their calendars for the summer... But I can do 48hr turnarounds.

Re: Help me, help you.

As we're phasing Mesa out as PC TL, Dave will be assuming the role of de facto TL, Hatch resident and former U.S. Army captain, Erin Pope. The idea is that she will assume the mantle of militia leader, once Hatch has one. Mesa will be returning to Albuquerque soon. He'll likely take Wiley E. Coyote, leaving you with the firepower of Sam and the general utility of Home Depot.

Essentially, when Mesa leaves, those that wish to stay will provide the fait accompli that they intend to act as a stay-behind team. He's smart enough to read between the lines, but he understands and will accept that decision. In other words, those that remain in Hatch won't technically be deserting although, in effect, that's what they're doing.

Everyone is back in Hatch. Some characters have stayed at the Beridze farm, others are attending the meeting with the Mayor - your choice as to where you want yours to be.

Game On.

Well, it's out of my hands now. My students take their AP U.S. History exam tomorrow. No more after-school review sessions for me, from here on out. These last two weeks have been rough, but I can sleep with a clear conscience, knowing that I did everything that I could to help them be ready. It's up to them now.

Back to the Land of Enchantment...

I'd like to establish a somewhat regular posting rate of 2-3 turns a week, or roughly every other day. If you can swing that, then let's do this. If not, please let me know now so that I can figure out a natural way to transition your PC out of the campaign.

Thanks.

Game Off.

OK, folks- here it comes. I'm sad to announce that I am putting LoE out to pasture. PbPs can only work if everyone involved takes the initiative to keep things moving forward. There's clearly not enough interest, engagement, free time, etc. to generate and maintain any momentum and fatal inertia has set in.

Thanks to those of you who tried. My apologies to those of you who didn't feel moved to. As a GM, I clearly failed to make the setting/story compelling enough to motivate active participation therein.
