Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
True to his word, Thaddeus Ruldo had set himself up along the riverbank before the sun had risen above the treeline of the eastern forest.  This spot was often used for social gatherings, and the flat, open area would serve as an excellent training ground for the town's would-be defenders.

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
Thaddeus sighed wearily to himself.  His wife Elaine had been of great help in gathering some stout branches that could be used as makeshift weapons, but even with that burden lifted from his shoulders, he was exhausted from his preparations.

His sigh ended in a wheezing cough, and he was thankful that he had picked up some herbs from the medicine woman when she had been in town yesterday.  Old age had not been agreeing with him recently.

His head perked up as he observed several figures walking towards him, the first tendrils of light from the rising sun silhouetting them ever so slightly.  Old man or not, he knew that he was by far the most accomplished fighter left in the village now that the guard had been recalled, and he had a duty to his home to train whoever came his way.

It was time to see what these villagers could do.

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
As Jack was on his way out to the pasture to switch with his da as usual, he spotted old man Ruldo standing around near the riverbank. He looked around briefly, noting that the old man seemed to be waiting for something. Letting his curiousity get the better of him, he sauntered over, chewing languidly on a straw.
"Hoi there, old man. What's got you standing there this early in the mornin'? Wife kick you out?" He called out, his mouth stretched in a teasing grin.
As he got closer he looked at the pile of sturdy sticks with mild interest.
"Or are you just fencing in the river?" He added, chuckling lightly. It was always good fun to tease the older villagers a bit now and then, especially since most of the others around his age were too mannered to do it.

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
Thaddeus's eyes flashed in annoyance.  He knew of this young man, how lazy Jack was and how life seemed to be nothing more than a joke to him, but this?  Had he actually not noticed the absence of the city guard, missed the seriousness of their situation?
"Ye'd do well ta join me fencin' in the river, boy." Thaddeus said, fully expecting the shepherd to scoff and continue on his way.  To his surprise, Jack cocked his head to one side, apparently perceiving the gravity in his tone.  Maybe there was something to this kid after all.
"Them goblins'll be here before ya know it, and ye'll wish ye learned ta handle that stick a' yers when one's a-chewin' on yer leg."

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
"Goblins? Still on that, old man?" Jack asked, raising an eyebrow. "Goblins aren't that dangerous. Ugly, fer sure, and nasty little buggers. But the one that tried to steal a lamb ran off right enough when I whacked it with this... Stick of mine." He continued, mimicking the old man's gravelly voice saying the last words.
"Don't see why you all always have to be so riled up. it's always one thing 'r the other. that's why you're all greying so fast, you know. Don't know how to relax." Jack sat down with his legs crossed, his staff lying across his lap. Like in any other situation, he looked so relaxed it was almost annoying.
"But I'm early going to the pasture. I suppose I could stay a while and watch you throw sticks at whoever you got running around in a tissy, or whatever it is you're planning"

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
Upon his arrival, jayfie decided to ask people about where he should go or what he could do to help. However Harkshire inhabitants paid him no attention due to his scruffy appearance and was easily mistaken as a beggar. He was beggining to feel hopeless until he saw two women. One looked like an old wise woman and the other seemed to be her apprentice. They were his last hope to get some info so he headed towards them waving clumsly and calling loudly for them

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
Gwendolyn took a few deep breaths as she approached the river where the old general would be training her and the others. This was...something of a big step for the girl. Ever since that fateful day, her life had been almost planned out. She had a path right in front of her, something to do every day, and everything was clear. She was a healer, a medicine woman destined to take on the mantle of the old crone. She was to aid the villagers just as she stood apart from them, she was to raise the herbs and mix them into salves, to bring life and stave off death. That was her charge, her mission through life. It was the price she had paid to save her family, the life she was forced to lead. But now she was doing something to deviate from that. She was looking at other paths, other possibilities. Was she actually going to learn how to fight here? To bring death to others instead of life? She understood on some level that it was important, her time out in the woods made her very, very clear on how common death was. Sometimes it was even necessary.

Why was she even doing this anyway? She already knew her path...why deviate from it? Why risk poisoning her magic? Or making her teacher angry? Would the old crone even get angry about this? It was always hard to tell with her...even for someone like Gwendolyn who spent most days with the old woman. Still though, despite her nervousness over this entire situation, despite everything that was happening, she did not show fear, or barely any emotion at all. The medicine women had a reputation to uphold, a certain attitude that was necessary for their magic to work, for their herbs to function and for people to believe in them. Even now, she had no idea whether the former or the latter was more important. Either way she breathed deeply and frowned as she saw Jack's cavalier attitude towards the training and his rudeness towards the old man.

She herself bowed to the old general. She knew that he had been having trouble lately with his back an his muscles. She and her mistress had recently delivered salves for that very reason. "Yes. Of course. I would be honored to train with you sir." She said calmly. She had her own reasons for this...the old woman, she did care for her, and she knew just how important she was to the surrounding villages. She would not be able to defend herself properly...it would be up to Gwendolyn.

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
Amalia approached the old man and his growing group slowly and tentatively. She really wasn't sure why Father had sent her out here, just that it was something important from about goblins yesterday's meeting. With the harvest upcoming, he couldn't spare either himself or her brothers, so she was chosen to represent the family. She always did want to become more involved with town affairs, and now she was being given a chance. She approached Thaddeus, whom like all of the long-time residents she had always known, and politely greeted him. "Good morning, Mr. Ruldo," she said respectfully. "Father apologizes that he could not be here. There is much work to be done in the fields. He sends me in his stead."

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
After receiving some directions from the surprised women, jayfie found himself near the riverbank. Unluckily he had no idea who Thaddeus was and most people were busy to pay him any attention at all. He kept wandering until he saw an old man standing watching over everything. Jayfie thought maybe he could tell him who Thaddeus was. So he troted up to the old man."Hi old man, d'ya know who Thaddeus is?"

"Gwen!" Jack exclaimed with a wide smile as he saw the girl. "As beautiful as always, my dear. No, wait... Did you do something with your hair?" He asked, looking closely at her. "Well, whatever it is, I find that it compliments your wonderful eyes even moreso than usual."

He then turned at the approach of Amalia, his smile growing even more. "Amalia, my dear, you are truly kind. To be blessed with the company of two such beauties at the very start of the day..." He said, sounding happy as can be. "Though I'll admit I'm surprised you're here. You're usually too busy for fun gatherings like this. Goblin thumping... Very exciting, I imagine." He said, chuckling to himself.

And as the young man arrived in search of Ruldo, Jack immediately saw his chance to liven things up a bit. "I am he!" He exclaimed in a serious voice, knitting his brow in a serious expression aimed at the other man. "Speak! What business do you have with The Great Thaddeus?"

Surprised by the commanding voice of the man claiming to be Thaddeu, jayfie only managed to stiffen his body in an attempt to look grave."Sire, my name is jayfie and i come from Suldenhar, am here to help with the town-defending and goblin squishing"

Amalia smiled at Jack's greeting, answering with a polite curtsy but didn't respond until he answered Jayfie. She huffed and shook her head. "Now, Jack, don't confuse the poor man." Turning to the stranger, she corrected him. "That's not Thaddeus. His name is Jack." After a slight glance in Jack's direction, she continued. "Don't trust what he says," she said with a chuckle. She gestured towards the old man. "Thaddeus... Mr. Roldo... is over there."

The trapper stopped a little downhill from the group. He had just finished making his rounds and was just starting to wake up from his routine. He had some extra time this week and wanted to see if he could help the Old Man from the Town Square.

He looked up the hill at the scene that was being played out before him. Leaning on his staff watching as one of the village's shepherds attempted to fool an outsider. Stewart waiting to see how things would pan out.

Humble Beginnings - Chapter 1
Thaddeus looked around at the gathering before him and huffed quietly to himself.  There couldn't have been more than a dozen people here; not an impressive turnout for a village of seven score.  Still, it was better than nothing.  The usual garrison was no more than five men strong, and maybe with a bit of training he could get these farmers and street urchins to at least figure out which end of a sword to hold.  But he certainly wasn't going to go easy on them, he thought with a twisted grin.
"Pair yerselfs up now and we'll start learnin' the drills.  We've gotta mighty long mornin' ahead of us!"
