"Come on.... When does this end? This better be like, the final boss!"

So far a proven strategy seemed to be smashing stuff. So Khulod raised his shield against the torrent of crystals and took a swing at the screaming... thing.

Day One - Dungeon
[DM: Conclusion of Round Nine]

Karthan backs up quickly until he is pressed against the stone wall.  His fiery projectile strikes true, but simply washes over the crystalline thing.

Malik also backs up, using care to avoid the spinning cloud of pain and the hammer-like arms of his aggressor.  He ends up on the other side of the room, opposite of Karthan.

Prak waves at the malformed creature and grabs it's attention long enough for Khulod to step in behind it and deliver a powerful blow.  The cloud of shards tears at the Dragonborn and causes him no small amount of pain.
[DM: Crystalline Being takes 13 damage]
[DM: Khulod takes 3 damage, is at 17/14 HP]

Surprise punctuates the monster's howl and it spins around, striking at Khulod with twin crystal spikes that impact on the edge of his shield.

Everyone outside of the shard cloud notices that it grew in diameter after Khulod's successful attack.

[DM Summary: Karthan 11/12 HP, Khulod 17/14 HP, Prak 19/14 HP, Malik 18/11 HP.  Malik and Karthan are roughly 40' away from the thing, Prak is about 10' away, and Khulod is next to it.  The shard cloud is 20' in diameter, so Prak is just on the edge of it.]

The expanding cloud of dagger-like shards was a definite concern for Karthan. It was clear that they couldn't win a war of attrition against something like that which meant the group needed to push damage. Plus, there was the rising water below, which also represented a clock if his theory was correct. With these in mind, and the belief that the crystal monster didn't reflect magic, he resorted to his most powerful spell, Guiding Bolt, which sent a torrent of radiant azure energy at the crystal monster.

Well what do you know? Smashing stuff worked. The red shards had given Khulod a positive shield. The shards hurt but... then again, in a way they didn't. That meant it was now a damage race. Khulod redoubled his efforts for that reason. Despite himself, he was having fun and his was reliving his MMORPG glorydays..

"DOT IT NUKE IT! EVEN SIDE! LEFT SIDE! MANY SHARDS! HANDLE IT!"

Day One - Dungeon
[DM: Conclusion of Round Ten]

A golden sliver of coruscating light launches from the Cleric, but misses by a slim margin and impacts a few feet from Malik's head.

The warlock returns fire with a purple bolt, this time hitting the crystal entity square in the back.  A portion of the energy is returned exactly along the path of travel and hits him almost as hard
[DM: Crystalline Being takes 5 damage]
[DM: Malik takes 2 damage, is at 15/11 HP]

Prak and Khulod work together to distract and attack, both scoring hard hits on the thing.  The cost of these successes comes in the form of ripped and stripped flesh as the shard cloud tears at both of them.
[DM: Crystalline Being takes 13 damage from Khulod]
[DM: Crystalline Being takes 3 damage from Prak]
[DM: Khulod takes 9 damage, is at 7/14 HP]
[DM: Prak takes 10 damage, is at 8/14 HP]

Once again the monster lashes out at Khulod, missing by a narrow margin.  It is difficult to tell for sure, but it seems to be slowing down as chunks of crystal are chipped away by your attacks.

To make things worse, the rising water finally breaks the surface of the grated floor and begins soaking the party's feet.

[DM: The floor is now considered difficult terrain.]

[DM Summary: Karthan 11/12 HP, Khulod 7/14 HP, Prak 8/14 HP, Malik 15/11 HP.  The shard cloud is 50' in diameter, both casters are 15' from the edge.]

[DM: Declare your Round Eleven actions.]

Malik casts Hex on the thing and then releases an eldritch blast at it.
Since he got feedback from the last blast he moved the moment his blast launched so he wouldn't be in a direct path to get hit back.

Day One - Dungeon
The situation was becoming worse rapidly as the crystalline monster released more of its death shards with each blow landed against it. While the death cloud didn't seem as devastating as the twins earlier, it was tearing apart Khulod and Prak at a decent rate based on their injuries. Karthan considered healing one of them, but any significant healing would require moving into the shard cloud. Unfortunately, he was in significantly worse shape than the others when the earlier crystal healing began. Thus, his condition was worse than the others when this battle began. He wondered how well he'd weather the storm when the time came. No, it seemed that Khulod probably had the right of it overall despite the crystal monster's punisher mechanic. So, Karthan went back to the Guiding Bolt well. Sure, it had missed narrowly earlier, and Malik had demonstrated that the monster did indeed have some sort of retaliatory strike for magic damage, but time was up. This next volley of attacks would likely be their last given the size of the shard cloud. Again a torrent of brilliant azure energy illuminated the room as it raced from Karthan to the crystal monster. In anticipation of the monster's counterattack, he then moved as far to his left as he could without drawing any closer to the monster.

[DM: Conclusion of Round Eleven]

Again, Karthan blasts the creature with holy light, this time striking true.  His anticipatory dodge makes no difference to the retributive strike and he is blasted in return.
[DM: Crystalline Being takes 12 damage]
[DM: Karthan takes 10 damage, is at 1/12 HP]

Malik uses the glow of the Guiding Bolt spell to aim carefully, but to no avail as his blast goes wide.

Blood gets into Khulod's eyes and he is unable to connect with what may be his final attack.  He yells in frustration and uses the fury to bolster his reserve.
[DM: Khulod heals 2 hit points, is at 9/14 HP]

The howl of the crystal abomination begins to crescendo once more as it whips up the shard storm to greater speeds.  Prak knows this is the end and decides to unleash everything he has left.  With a mighty yell he drives his glowing sword into the enemy and watches as it disintegrates before the might of his divine smite.
[DM: Crystalline Being takes 11 damage, dies.]

Instantly, the shard storm loses all momentum and falls into the water.  This is followed up by a loud mechanical noise from below and the water falling away through the grate, leaving the party wet up to their knees.

[DM Summary: Karthan 1/12 HP, Khulod 9/14 HP, Prak 8/14 HP, Malik 11/11 HP.]

From above comes a pleasant voice, reminiscent of the greenish crystal pillar you first encountered, "Congratulations Karthan the Cleric, Khulod the Fighter, Malik the Warlock, and Prak the Paladin.  You have defeated the Trial and have proven yourselves worthy of special consideration.  Please let me know when you are ready to proceed."

The corpse of the crystalline malformation lies crumpled before you, but there is little else of interest in the room.  A careful search finds six thumbnail sized crystals built into what was the spine of the thing.  They each glow with the strength of a flashlight and are easily removed from their sockets.

Day One - Dungeon
Karthan was engulfed by a bolt of energy nearly identical to the devastating blast he'd unleashed on the crystalline monster mere moments after his attack. All he could do was grit his teeth and choke down his pain as the combined sensations of burning and corroding wracked his body. It took every last bit of willpower he had to deny eXilion the twisted pleasure of listening to his pained screams, but he managed it in the end, albeit barely. Instead, eXilion had to settle for Karthan collapsing to his hands and knees trembling. His shield and quarterstaff clanked and rattled off to his sides after his grip on them loosed during his collapse. It was good that Prak managed to finish off the crystalline monster shortly thereafter because even remaining in his current position proved quite the struggle.

It was several minutes after the defeat of the crystalline monster that Karthan regained enough strength to stand. Stand was a bit generous though, as he leaned heavily on his quarterstaff such that he'd certainly tumble to the ground if someone knocked it out from under him. Further testament to his pain, and probable annoyance, his scutum hanged lazily from his backpack. "Thanks, but I'm good. All but certain that we're dead if there's another fight." Slowly and gingerly, Karthan shifted his backpack toward the others ever so slightly. "The loot from the twins is in my backpack. It's some crystals and cubes. Feel free to divide it up." It was clear that Karthan was using nearly all of his strength just to stand and carry his backpack. Thus, it wasn't much surprise that he allowed the others to handle and take the lead on pretty much everything right now. All he really wanted to do was log out of the game.

Karthan isn't maintaining any buffs anymore.

quote:
A quick pat down of the Noisy Twin reveals a large pouch of crystal shards and cubes and little else.

Per my post, Karthan is dividing those spoils with the party. I'm working on clarifying the amount. Also, I'm awaiting a reply on whether we each had 2000 "generic" crystals before we encountered the twins or 500. The OOC update to our crystal count wasn't clear to me.

As you play with the two pearlescent blue Cubes, you find that they stick together if you apply mental intent - basically you will them together.  Pulling them apart is just as easy, you merely have to think it and they do so.  You are somewhat surprised when you think 'apart' again and both Cubes fall apart into one hundred Shards in your hands.

Prak, surprised, wills them back into a cube before any slip through his fingers. Then he reaches for a handful of loose shards and tries to replicate the process. (Assuming that works) He breaks them down again and goes for sphere, and pyramid, testing this new ability.

To be clear - I have 1 cube, 500 shards, and how many crystals? And are the crystals colored, if that's relevant?

"I need to know more before I make a decision about the crystals," Karthan replied weakly. He lumbered toward the others still relying heavily on his quarterstaff as he virtually dragged himself across the room. "I suppose it's best to divide the loot after we get out of this place. If no one objects, I suggest we trust our giant scaly friend here with the loot until we're ready to divide it, then get out of here. I definitely need to find an inn or something to heal up my avatar." Assuming the others agreed, Karthan informed the disembodied voice that they were ready to proceed.
