November 9th

Zikmund wakes up to a grey dawn and hears the sounds of Vilém and Bedřich already up and preparing a meal on the middle level.

Not wanting to partake in the usual breakfast banter, he decides to ease out onto the roof to see if the morning air can crystallize his thoughts on the Prussians and the crew's next move.

Pushing open the small door leading to the roof, Zikmund notices that Manfred is also up and studying the northern horizon.

"Well, early bird gets the worm, eh, Manfred?  You see Prince Charles out there yet?  Have to be on their way - the Prussians can feel us coming."

Manfred turns slowly and gives Zikmund a sly smile.

"Well, sounds like the night owls caught something last night, yes?"  He turns and motions back to the north, "What's this news Franěk passed to you?  Arnošt says you think the Prussians are retreating?"

"Surely our friends are simply putting the river between us and them."

Zikmund stares out over the plain, bordered by the Vltava looking like a silver ribbon stretching away.

"Well, Franěk wouldn't confirm, says it's too early to know.  But, I think he knows and just doesn't want his name attached if anything were to happen in the city.  Said his eyes on the garrison aren't reporting anything - no detachments leaving the city at night, no major activity at the magazine."

"Certainly, don't seem to be any increase in guards at their stations and they haven't imposed an increased curfew.  But, the Prussians I see are even more grim-faced than normal.  You'd think we would've heard if there had been a battle by now.  I don't know, I don't think there's likely to be one now - something in the way he talked, makes me think Frederick's pulling up stakes, doing more than contesting the river.  I'm thinking he'll swing north, maybe make a run at Dresden before the winter really sets in and punish old Augustus for his audacity."

November 9th

Manfred rousts Vilém and Bedrich and sets them upon their task of keeping a watchful eye on Emil's offices.  They do not engage any of the workers or enter the grounds.  They simply spend time circling what is in view from outside, trying to remain alert to any activity that might provide clues as to what, if anything, is being prepared.

Zikmund spends his day visiting contacts in various and sundry locations from taverns and coffee houses to what gambling dens and bawdy-houses might be open during the day in order to gossip and exchange news with an eye to see if anyone is talking about a Prussian retreat.

November 9th

After a number of sweeps past both Palace and armory, Manfred begins to feel that two Prussian guards seem to tailing him.  They are keeping their distance for now, and don't seem to be alarmed at his presence but he does recognize their faces from a couple of times earlier in the day.

He's beginning to think this is not coincidental.

November 9th

The crew meets back at the Golden Tiger about an hour after nightfall - another cold but clear night.

Vilém and Bedřich were only able to discern what they felt was a modest increase in activity at Emil's warehouses.  Nothing noteworthy or obvious occurred.  On this day, it seemed there were more inbound wagons than outbound.

Arnošt reports that there were some troop movements along the roads but seemed like usual activity, if a few more troops than usual on the palisades.  Most folks felt this was only normal, given the reports of the Austrian army.  There were no clear signs of either a battle or large outbound movements of, troops, supplies, or weapons.

Zikmund, a little tipsy from spending too much time at his last tavern stop, indicates that word is making the rounds that confirms the idea that the Prussians have pulled back across the Elbe.  Some travelers in from east of Prague reported seeing dust clouds to the east of the river, farther back from the river crossings but were unsure whether this meant the Prussians were calling up reinforcements or if the Prussians were not planning to contest the crossings.

Manfred, angry with himself about being spotted and tailed, indicates he wasn't able to provide much detail - it didn't seem like much in the way of preparations were being made around the Palance and armory.  If so, it was all out of sight.

All told, the information simply confirmed that the situation was fluid but would require more investigation or they would simply need to wait on events.
