Street savvy shaman here.  Looks like everyone is going with their Shadow Names (or at least part of them, in Nexus' case) for their handles?

The Canteen (OOC)

Hey Nexus, welcome to the party!  I think using our Shadow Names as our player tags is probably easiest to keep track of.  Makes the use of real names more unusual seeming whenever it comes up and helps divorce the two identities a bit in my mind.

I suspect that the specifics behind the aforementioned "not always so" might slow those down, depending on local attitudes toward refugees from the ranks of the Seers.

Yeah, Clasm has all sorts of reasons to prefer her Shadow Name.

Heh, yeah I can see where that might throw a wrench in things.  I'm sure someone will still want you though, for questioning if nothing else.

Out of curiosity, which meaning of Clasm are you going for?  I know of it as a suffix in Greek words that deal with destruction or breaking things, but I've never seen it used as a stand alone word.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

What prefix goes to the suffix depends on what agenda she's pursuing, since her Plan A for most problems is to be an asshole to the problem until it does something stupid. Iconoclasm, Phagoclasm, Pentaclasm... she's currently on Scopoclasm, but expect that to change to either Axioclasm or something relating to the main plot during play.

It's why she just goes by Clasm; it avoids the tedium of reintroduction.

Hello! Hi, everyone. I'll be the final jerk for this thing. Good to meet.

It seems we'll be a very international group; Selene is an Australian moon goddess/Mastigos. She's about identity, madness, and tempting emotional intensity. I tweaked her concept a little bit through the RTJ, and I'd love to have people to bounce some ideas for characterization around with.

In particular, I'd originally imagined Selene as an Arrow, but I'm not sure how much that fits anymore. I'm debating shifting her into the Free Council, but that's unsolid yet.

Silver Ladder Obrimos here - though I plan on taking a Spirit-focused legacy, so it looks like we'll be pretty adept at handling the Shadow between us.

I'm also taking the Shadow Name merit! Two dots now, and will probably up to three later. Selene, I'd be happy to talk ideas with you, especially since it looks like we're both taking on Goddess Shadow Names.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Hello everyone! Golly it was a wild ride getting approved for me, each time I submitted something, one of you posted here and described your character concept that was eerily similar to what I had just written!

I'm still cannibalizing the last concept (streetwise thyrsus runewalker) into this fine fellow, but the gist is that he's a Runewalker and something of an occult addict. He's also a Guardian, albiet one who still needs to undergo his veils (since he's only been Awake for a couple months). I plan on focusing on my ruling arcana (Mind/Space) and not really branching outside them, since I sort of want a "pure" warlock experience right now, there's a Legacy that would probably be perfect for Serpent but I'm not really interested in pursuing one right now (but that might change in the future, who knows). If I can afford to, I plan on taking the Shadow Name merit.

*looks at the Shadow Name Merit properly*

Oh, hey, it's like Occultation and High Speech wrapped into one, at least as far as it'd matter to Clasm. I'm going to have to revisit my Merit selection.

As for Arcana, Clasm currently stands at Fate 3 / Space 2 / Time 1, although I wouldn't object to swapping out Space for something that fills a niche, if need be. It doesn't surprise me that Fate's popular, though, due to Conditional Duration.

I'm currently planning to go Death 3, Fate 2, and Matter 1 with an eye on becoming a Stone Scribe when I get a couple points of XP and find a willing mentor.

It seems like we're going to have a lot of Shadow Name users, which makes me wonder if it might not be worthwhile to look into trying to theme our cabal a bit somewhere down the line.  We have two goddesses, an embodiment of disorder/destruction, a scaled symbol of temptation/danger, and a Gravemarker/memorial/monument.  Sounds like the beginnings of a myth to me.

Might want to see how the Cabal plays and interacts before giving it a theme, I think, but definitely something to consider.

Also, snakes and serpents have a broader range of symbolism than danger and temptation. Deception, guardians, power, treachery, the list goes on.

Where'd you get that idea from? Guardians are public about being Guardians, nobody wants to be thought of as an Apostate and it's difficult to pretend to be a member of another Order.

The "London Orders and Concilium" thread only has two handfuls of guardians that are publicly Guardians, and only two are named. Just trying to figure out if NPCs are gonna get weird if Someone introduces me without specifying that I'm part of an Order.

I think what Speaker means by that is that since London is a big city, not all Pentacle mages actually know each other, or even know of each other. So most of the city's Guardians don't seek to be publicly known outside their order and cabal.

Looks nervously at giant collection of 1e Legacy books.

There are a lot of them out there, they just need converting into 2e. So you're either going to have to talk to the ST about converting one, or come up with a homebrewed one on your own using the mechanics in the 2e core.

It's not something you can really skip out on - it's sort of an expectation, both mechanically and in-setting, that you either join an existing Legacy at Gnosis 2 or develop your own unique one at Gnosis 3.

Here's a list of 1e Legacies and what books they are found in:http://wodcodex.com/wiki/Legacies_(1st_Edition). If anyone is interested in one and doesn't have the book I can probably link you to a pdf.

EDIT: RPOL hates every link I try to post, apparently. You'll have to copy/paste it or add the extra ")" to the end because it won't recognize it as part of a link... and I can't even get the hyperlink BBcode to work...

Nexus, I believe you would, but only with Active Mage Sight up - Spirit Eyes only lets you actively see spirits with Active Mage Sight. Passive Sight just gives you a feeling when a spirit is nearby, you'd have to turn on Active sight to actually see it.

That being said, Bast does have her familiar Mau riding on her shoulder; if she was to turn on her sight, it'd look something like this - http://virtualegypt.weebly.com...077581/994259659.jpg except as an actual cat with gold markings and collar.

I was trying to decide on that one.

Nexus has taken to bribing a spirit of boredom into following her around on a number of occasions, veiling her from mortal sight by extending its Influence over her.  It essentially acts an a Somebody Else's Problem chip from Hitchhiker's Guide, makes people lose any interest in her on sight.

I don't think she would have done so for this scene though.

In previous editions of the game it paid to have your Mage Armor up each and every game.  I don't know if that is the case in this version.

That's a neat way to get social invisibility.  Sort of an application of the 1 dot 'strengthen/weaken' effect on your own personal aura of interest?

Generally I think 2E tried to move away from having mage armor up all the time since you can't actually have Mage armor active for more than a scene per activation now.  You could easily cast some other form of defensive spell to replace it, but I tend to fall into the 'if they can't sense I'm a mage I'm better off' camp.  Don't want to tip off any Seers you pass on the street.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Yea, with Mage Armor not being a spell and able to be activated reflexively without a roll, there's no need for the old 1e "cast it every morning with a day-long duration" ritual anymore, since you can just activate it for the scene the moment you sense trouble.

It is still detectable through Mage Sight, though, and I'd imagine in a situation like this it'd be seen as weird to have Armor up. Though any other spells I'm sure are fair game, it's not weird for a Mage to have a spell or two hanging on their person. Though what Stele said is definitely true as well.

Bast has no active spells up at the moment, she just has her Familiar with her, which would only ping your senses if you have Spirit 2.

Hello Jeanne.

There are so few games that make it past the opening scenes, I tend to bump into a lot of the same people when I bounce from game to game.

Question for the Speaker.

If Nexus sent a text from her phone to Belinda's, could Sparky use its Influence to travel along with that text and enter Belinda's phone?  If the Gauntlet was too strong it wouldn't be able to Manifest, obviously, but it wouldn't be a bad way to get a spy inside the building.

I'd say they'd probably want to confer a moment outside and possibly check the home she's staying in for spells/supernatural interference as well, but if there would be nothing to find I'm fine with just assuming that they did that off-camera and cutting to her room.

To be perfectly honest, if they're just checking in to be sure, I'd even say we'd probably want to just send in 1-2 people rather than having a whole huge group descending on her at once. Maybe split up into like 2 people going in and the rest checking the area just in case?

I might be able to treat her with a homebrew Boon-granted Condition, assuming the ST's feeling permissive, but making that a permanent solution would require one more Reach than is Paradox safe (unless we can get three hours with her without Sleepers showing up,) a point of Mana, and a permanent point of Willpower. As you might imagine, I'm open to alternatives.

Ah, but Exceptional Luck is Clasm's Praxis. Praxes? The spell that gets an exceptional success on only three successes, and thereby provides an opportunity to net Mana. Additionally, it can grant Conditions that can be resolved for Arcane Beats if the casting was an exceptional success. An Arcane Beat and a bit of Mana is a potent incentive to shift from "certain" to "failure is highly improbable."

Sorry for being so quiet, working this weekend and not getting Victoria Day off sucks.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Casting roll:

Exceptional Luck, Reaching for Instant Casting and Advanced Duration
Gnosis 1 + Fate 3 + Mudra Yantra 3

15:36, Today: Clasm rolled 2 successes using 7d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 3,4,10(+4),8,7,3,3.  Gnosis + Fate + Mudra.

Alas, I fell short of an Exceptional Success, and am thus denied the goodies that had tempted me. Still, the memory roll can be made with +2 dice and the Informed Condition.

15:38, Today: Clasm rolled 4 successes using 7d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 8,4,1,8,8,9,2.  Int + Composure + Boon.

Resolving the Informed Condition makes that an exceptional success to write the prophecy down from memory.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Unless we're past the one-minute mark, Clasm still has Mage Sight active, with Prime. Anything remarkable in the hospital on the way out? The nurse in particular is of interest to Clasm, since she's the one with the most access to Belinda.

The prophecy and muddling after would be more than a minute, but I'll tell you for free that the nurse is totally mundane.

Will set up a new thread today for giving out beats and experience.

@Clasm apologies, I totally failed to mention that your mage sight would have caught another precognition flair from Belinda when she spoke the last words.
They're not part of the main prophecy though.

We'll just say Clasm made a note of it on the note. Exceptional success on the memory roll, after all.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

So as not to slow down the story, y'all have 24 hours to get the address for where the Seers are hiding.

Tomorrow I'll ask Nexus to roll and Int + Streetwise check, as you would be the one to know where this is.

Just barely.

10:54, Today: Nexus rolled 1 success using 6d10 with the World of Darkness nWoD system with a target of 8, rerolling 10s with rolls of 1,7,5,5,5,10(+4).  Intelligence + Streetwise.

I could be totally off base with that Greenwich thing, it's just a Google powered guess.

Google fuelled guesses are good, I'm a big fan.

Nexus knows there's an 'Elephant and Castle' tube station.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Do you mean to try and get more information out of the prophecy? It could have figured out the Elephant and Castle bit since it has access to wifi through your phone if it spent a point of Essence to strengthen it's own knowledge...

Or do you mean as like as offering of essence/resonance kind of way?

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Would Clasm have had a chance to learn the hangouts of the local Mages? Because the Lamb & Flag isn't that far off the route between Hayfich's address and the elephant statue, and the Stone Philosophers seem like the sort that'd be happy to provide reinforcements.

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Hello all!

I am on vacation, and therefore hundreds if not thousands of miles away from my books.  Would anyone be so kind as to give me a quick rundown of what sort of dice pool I'd need to roll to summon a Rank 3 Spirit of Electricity and give it the instructions "hey, hang out with me until sunrise?"

Re: The Canteen (OOC)

Congrats on the time off!  I looked into the summoning and have two potential options for you:

A)  You can cast Summon Spirit to entice the nearest spirit of Resonance: Electricity to come to you.  Specifiying the target's Rank is not an option unless you personally know a rank three Electricity spirit that you can target individually, but just in case I built for that power level. You can use an advanced command to say "remain by my side until dawn" though this will require you to create the Open condition for them if you want them to manifest. Breakdown: +2 Reach for complex command, +1 reach Advanced Duration, +1 Reach for Casting Time, -6 Factors for Potency.  Ends with a Potency 4 spell that technically lasts for up to a week/month (don't know your spirit level).

B) Same idea but instead you summon the spirit and command it with a second spell.  This saves on having to Reach so high.  The command spell allows you to give orders such as 'stay with me' at no additional cost so it is much easier to manage Reach-wise.  For this one I have assumed you have a Spirit of 3, if not you will need more potency on the Command.  Breakdown:  Summon Spirit (1 Reach Casting Time, -6 Factor for Potency 4), Command Spirit (1 Reach for Casting Time, 1 Reach for Advanced Duration, 1 Reach for Sensory Range, -2 Factor for Duration, -2 Factor for Potency)

I will point out though that both of these require you to bind the spirit in question and are thus Wisdom sins.  Atop that they do not prevent the spirit in question from acting of it's own volition while with you.

Hey all, I'm sorry for not posting this week, had a huge work thing come through combined with preparing for a two-week vacation I'm leaving for tomorrow.

I should be able to find time to post next week, though; I'll be at the beach and only working some remotely during the day so I'll try to stay sober long enough to get a few in ;) Assume Bast is following along with everyone for now, as she doesn't have a huge amount to add just yet.
