Last Daughter of Krypton [IC - Power Girl]
Karen whistled quietly as she beheld the opulence of The Heart of Gold. With a smile, she thought Wow, Lex can really pick a venue! She quickly thanked her driver, left her gift bag with the crew, then embarked onto the yacht.

Weaving in and out of the other guests, she made her way to one of the bars and picked up a glass of wine to help blend in. For better or worse, alcohol had no effect on her, but she had learned to appreciate the complexity of some vintages, and that many party goers tended not to trust someone that wasn't partaking in the festivities at hand.

She smiled and greeted guests she recognized as she passed. The attractive, youngish tech CEO wasn't exactly known as a social butterfly, not like Power Girl, something about fighting crime in a skin tight costume really brought out the cheerleader in her, but she did her best as the slightly introverted, kind of nerdy Karen Starr.

“Well, well, looks like they'll let any old riffraff on this boat!” Karen exclaimed as she gave her cousin a one armed side hug. “Hey Clark! Morgan Edge, right? I'm Karen Starr, StarrWare Industries, pleased to meet you! Sorry for interrupting, I just had to say 'hi' to my favorite cousin.”

Clark started slightly when Karen grabbed him, but relaxed when he saw who it was.

"Karen! Good to see you. Yeah, you write one good piece and suddenly you end up on Lex Luthor's boat, apparently," he joked before turning back to Edge.

Morgan Edge was a man in his late 60s, severe with platinum-white hair parted neatly, and a broad, toothy smile. He had been a newscaster himself in his early days and it showed. His blue suit was crisp and sharp as his name. His dark blue eyes belied a youth of spirit not immediately evident on his face.

"It was a good piece, Kent," he complimented. "And Miss Starr, guilty as charged. A pleasure to meet you in person, finally. I've been watching your company's progress with great interest. I'm a strong believer in staying with the times. Or ahead of it, if possible. Trust that the Edge Media Group will be an eager customer."

He held out his hand for a shake and grinned widely.

"Did I hear right, you two are cousins? Are you from Kansas too? What are the odds of you both coming out here?"

“It was a great piece if you ask me, Clark, but I might be a little biased,” Karen laughed.

In response to Morgans comment about Starrware Industries, she replied, “I'm happy to hear that! You know I think R&D is about to make some announcements in regards to innovations that might be of interest to you.”

She grinned right back at him and shook his hand. “Yep, we're cousins! Well, I'm not from Smallville originally, but I ended up living with Clark and his folks.” Karen intentionally gave the short, short version of her 'backstory', both because she didn't want to ruin the mood of the party, and because Mr. Edge had the resources to pry into her fictitious background if she happened to pique his interest too much.

“I know it's crazy right? Most people don't believe me when I tell them I grew up on a farm. Its really this big guys fault I'm here today,”
Karen continued, nodding at her cousin. “He told me 'You dream too big for a little town like Smallville'. If it hadn't been for his inspiration, I'd probably be back on the farm planting rutabagas or something right about now.”

“Speaking of inspirations, have either of you seen the birthday boy, or is he fashionably late to his own party?”

Edge laughed.

"Well, I'm glad we got you here in Metropolis, then," he said, taking a sip of his martini.

"Lex? Oh, he's probably waiting to make some sort of grand entrance with fireworks or a holographic dance team or whatever he's spending his money on nowadays. I think I spotted my wife, if you'll excuse me."

With that, Morgan melted away into the crowd.

“See you later,” Karen waved as Morgan departed. She turned back to Clark with a smile.

“Ugh, I'm glad you're here. I get so nervous at big parties like this. I'm sure you remember the time I barfed on Lana Langs shoes.” She grimaced at the embarrassing memory, then laughed. “So! How're things at the Planet?”

She gave her cousin a sly side eye look and inquired about an even more interesting subject matter: “And how are things with Ms. Lane?”

Clark nearly spit his drink.

"Um... Planet's good. Lois is good. Couple of dates, things are going pretty well. She's actually here somewhere. Not on a date, but we both got invited. Her pieces on the Arab Spring last year went really high-profile. She went on a couple of national networks, I think she did a piece for BBC too." He paused, "I mean, I'm guessing that's what it was. She's also just a great reporter. Could've been other things. Or maybe she knows Luthor."

He took a sip and looked around suspiciously.

"How about you? How's Mr. Lexcorp himself? And Starrware? And... your hobbies?"

“Awesome, go Team Smallville!” Karen grinned and offered up a congratulatory fist pump to Clark.

“I've been doing amazing, Starrware's great! Super, super busy. So busy in fact, I almost forgot about Lex's birthday,” She grimaced again, then continued, “Luckily, he sent me an oh so polite reminder, and here I am!”

Karens smile quickly returned as she chattered on, “And yeah, Lex. You know I totally didn't think he was my type when we first met, a little too showy, you know. But hes just got this dynamic force of personality... magnetism, I don't know. I'm totally thinking about asking him out,” She chuckled, then paused to glance around suspiciously, making sure that Lex didn't happen to be standing right behind her or anything. “Don't tell him I said that.”

She took a sip of her wine and lowered her voice, “And if you're referring to my obsession with a certain cape wearing resident of our fair Metropolis, then I heard she had a kind of slow day today: Two robberies, a piggyback ride for an ambulance, and that incident with the mad scientist at the LexCorp corporate office. Did you hear about that? Kind of interesting.” She mused.

Clark's response was cut off by a sudden shift in music and a round of applause. The crowd moved to look up at one of the rear upper decks' balcony. A spotlight from near the back of the yacht, near the pool, swiveled to illuminate the man of the hour, Lex Luthor.

He was dressed simply, comfortably, with a black jacket and a burnt-orange shirt. He looked even more at ease in the spotlight than he had been earlier at the site of the Hamilton incident.

He held up his hand to silence the crowd, and pressed a finger to the miniature microphone-headset sitting in his ear like the worlds least obtrusive Bluetooth. Instantly his voice was amplified through the dozens of expertly-sound-checked speakers hidden around the boat.

"Thank you all so much for coming. It's not every day a man turns...however old I am-" he paused for laughter, "-And I think it's as good a time as any to celebrate. The refreshments are on me, but you can thank my tax guy. Sincerely, though, you're all my friends, and we're all being celebrated tonight, because when one Metropolite succeeds, we all do!"

The crowd applauded. The boat slowly pulled away from shore, and everyone swayed a moment to keep their balance, except for Lex, who had one hand on the railing and braced himself. After a few moments, during which the boat gained a bit up speed and ended up in the harbor, Lex raised his glass.

"To a new year, new challenges, and new successes."

"To Lex!" someone called in the crowd.

"To Lex!" came the crowd's response.

The toast went up, and everyone cheered.

RATTA-TAT-TAT-TAT! came the sound of an automatic weapon discharge, and the yacht exploded into chaos. From over the gunnels came a dozen, maybe twenty, men in balaclavas and holding a variety of firearms. They grabbed partygoers, fired into the air, and began to round people into the pool. The thing was only about 6 feet deep, so no one was in too much danger, but the men began forcing people to go inside, to round them up. A cadre of suited bodyguards seemingly materialized around Lex and were overcome by the combined force of the assailants.

All this happened in less than 2 minutes. Clark looked fearfully at his cousin, the question in his eyes evident: What was she wearing under her dress?

Karen fought back panic as masked gunmen boarded the ship. She wasn't worried about herself of course, but with Clark and Lex present, that pretty much made it a nightmare situation for her. Being among all their fellow party goers meant she couldn't easily change into her costume without somebody noticing. She'd do it in an instant if it were a life or death situation, but as long as it wasn't, she had to keep in mind that discovery of her secret could mean some very hard times for Clark, Jonathan, Martha, and perhaps even her employees at Starrware Industries.

Determinedly, she nodded at her cousin, answering his unspoken question. Her hand reflexively touched the Kryptonian crystal suspended from a simple silver necklace just above her ample cleavage.  Frantically she looked around for a spot she might be able to change unseen into the Girl of Steel, even if it meant 'falling overboard' or causing a distraction... somehow.

[[edit]]

Karen decided on taking the least desperate measure first, she could always do something crazy like dive overboard if someone spotted her. She waited for a moment when the least ski masks were looking her way, and slowly backed her way toward the nearest corner of the cabin, doing her best to keep obscured behind the other terrified guests. At the last moment, she ducked out of sight, activated her smart suit crystal, and with a flurry of action faster than the human eye could easily track, she suddenly became Power Girl.

The Kryptonian technology she carried with her, some of the only crystalline tech she had left from her lost home, flared and covered her in an instant. Her hair, her clothes, even her eyes changed to complete the illusion, even if it was more of a reveal.

These bastards didn't stand a chance.

Power Girl took off and pulled a quick half loop at subsonic speed so, for the people on the boat at least, it would look like she flew in from the direction of the city. She slowed and hovered just beyond the balcony where Lex and his bodyguards were being accosted by pirates, and announced herself. “Drop your weapons boys, the party's over!” Tiny stars ignited just behind her now ice blue eyes and two blasts of heat vision hopefully rendered the thugs rifles useless.

The last daughter of Krypton pushed herself beyond her normal limits, turned, breathed deep, and unleashed a blizzard on the pirates by the pool, careful to avoid any of the party guests.

Her sudden appearance barely had time to register on the two thugs faces before they dropped their rapidly slagging rifles onto the deck, where they sizzled against the lovely hardwood. Lex's bodyguards leaped into action and rammed into their captors. One pirate was sent ass-over-ankles to the lower level, where he smashed into a deck chair and groaned in pain. The other was slammed against a pillar by Miss Mercy, of all people, who held the man off his feet and pressed her forearm against his windpipe.

While those struggles were happening, Kara Zor-El had already turned and unleashed a frosty breath upon the lower deck. In order to avoid freezing the hostages in the pool, she had to skirt her concentrated breath to one side, but the two men caught in it were instantly shackled by frozen sea air that blew them to the ground and froze them to the damp deck.

The other two pirates near the pool turned to face her but seemed unable to rally themselves in time to attack. One of them screamed and fiddled with a radio on his shoulder. A few moments later three pirates came rushing out from under the upper deck or below decks. They skid to a halt and looked up at the flying Kryptonian.

"Oh Shit. It's POWER GIRL!"

The two beside the pool suddenly regained their wits and fired at her. Bullets ricocheted harmlessly off her Body of Steel.

[OOC:
Summary: One of the balcony Pirates is still up, but being grappled by Mercy. Your Cone area couldn't get all four pirates without also freezing the pool, but you paralyzed two. The other two couldn't act since they had readied for a different action. The 6 spread out begin running to your position but only three can reach you by double-moving and so get no actions. Then the two remaining fire at you. One hits, but his machine gun isn't powerful enough to get past your Impervious. Your turn!]

Kara had hoped Lexs bodyguards would be able to take care of him now that the pirates harassing them had been disarmed. After freezing the two thugs by the pool, she glanced back to make sure things were going according to plan. Rao, she must workout... a lot! Power Girl boggled as she caught a glimpse of Mercy at work.

She quickly got her mind back on task when pirates started yelling and shooting at her. Though she barely even registered the little hunks of hot lead impacting against her, she knew all the other innocent bystanders wouldn't be so lucky if they were struck by a stray bullet or ricochet.

Quickly, she floated down to just a few feet above the deck and turning to face the three crooks who had just arrived on the scene. Again she drew in a deep breath, her solar enhanced autonomic systems drawing the thermal radiation from the mass of air compressed in her lungs until it was nearly as cold as the depths of space. She released the cold air and crystallized moisture in a gale force blast, hopefully flash freezing and completely immobilizing her targets.

Her breath coated the men in frost and gave the deck an icy sheen. The men struggled to stay standing, even as their comrades ran up to join them, guns in hand. One, seemingly the smartest, yelled "RETREAT" into his walkie-talkie and began to back up. There was a shout and then a thump as Mercy tossed her opponent over the balcony and he landed in front of the men below.

The others opened fire again.

The familiar prodding sensation of machine-gun fire against her skin intensified. Most rounds flattened against her abdomen and spun away, robbed of most momentum, while a few bounced haphazardly off her ample bosom. At least a half-dozen rounds harmlessly collided with her face, her mouth, her cheeks and bounced away.

The men struggled to reload their weapons while coated in ice.

"STOP!" she heard behind her. One of the pirates, one foot shackled to the deck by ice, was holding his gun directly at a dark-haired woman Kara recognized as Daily Planet Reporter Lois Lane.

"You make one fucking move and I'll blow Miss Pulitzer Prize's pretty brains out!" the coward shouted.

[[OOC: Two pirates end up failing by 1 degree, leaving them Hindered, and one fails by 2 degrees and is Defenseless. Also, I just caught the 'Selective' modifier, so You totally could have gotten all four last round. made some rolls, one is paralyzed and one is Hindered.

The other three move up and panic like babies.

True to the pirates command, Kara didn't move. Unless you counted her irises contracting tighter around her pupils as moving. The thugs shooting her with a hail of bullets had annoyed her, but taking her cousins girlfriend as a hostage made her angry. That anger stoked the fires of the little furnaces inside her head, which in turn focused blasts of electromagnetic radiation and all the thermal energy those wavelengths could carry through the lenses of her eyes directly at the barrel of the cowards rifle.

The beams of heat flew faster than his trigger finger, and by the time he pressed it, his front receiver and barrel were fouled and fused, and his gun jumped wildly in his hands, ruined.

The six men under the balcony began to run for the side of the boat, where Power Girl could hear the distinct hum of an outboard motor. Three of the men were much slower, weighed down by the ice.

The man whose gun had just been ruined growled in frustration and ran in the opposite direction, hobbling along towards the front of the boat.

"No paycheck is worth this," he muttered.

Kara let the thugs heading for the motorboat go for the moment, she could most likely catch up with them and disable their motor later, for now she flew after the lone pirate making for the bow of the yacht. She attempted to snatch him from behind, one hand reaching for his collar and the other for his belt, whereupon she intended to fly him back to the buccaneers boat so she could apprehend them all at once away from the innocent bystanders.

“Where do you think you're going?” She asked incredulously.

The other men began climbing overboard, leaving their comrades lying about the deck.

“You have got to be kidding me!” Power Girl scoffed, as she tossed away the pirates discarded clothes. Hating to ponder what other articles the crook would be willing to lose to make his get away, Kara decided it would be better to just tackle him from behind. As she did so, she wrapped her arms under his, cinching him up in a bear hug and lifting off with him to execute her earlier plan of helping all the remaining pirates back to their boat.

The stray assailant was easily scooped up and held immobile by Kara's strength, and even as he struggled he was unable to budge the Kryptonian's grasp by an inch.

The other pirates finally loaded into their escape boat and began to pull away. In the distance, the sound of Coast Guard sirens was heard.

“Stop wiggling!” Kara ordered her captive. “Hey, look on the bright side, you can tell all your friends at Stryker's that you got a hug from Power Girl.”

Unceremoniously, she dumped the would be pirate in the motorboat with the rest of his cohorts. In a flurry of super speed, she made sure the villains were disarmed, chucking any remaining weapons overboard. She then violently removed the outboard motor from the vehicles stern and casually tossed it into the harbor a few football field lengths away.

“Sounds like your ride is on its way,” Kara addressed the pirates as she noted the sound of sirens nearing. “There's always time to change your ways guys. Think about it.” She then left the men floating adrift and flew back toward the Heart of Gold, doing a quick flyby to make sure no one was hurt and that the pirates hadn't left behind any nasty surprises.

The x-ray sweep of the ship revealed nothing amiss, and by the time she had satisfied herself to that effect, the Coast Guard had reached Lex's yacht and were passing out blankets and taking statements.

Her super-hearing picked up the static of a megaphone before it was used.

*ksh*"Power Girl, would you please come down here?"*ksh*

For a moment Kara was torn, she needed to sneak back onto the ship before anyone noticed she was missing, but she was interested in what Lex wanted to say. Letting curiosity get the better of her, she quickly floated back down to just a few inches above the yachts deck. “Sorry for crashing your party Mr. Luthor. I must have left my invite in my other tights.” She joked, dryly. “I only have a moment, I'm sure someones cat is stuck up in a tree somewhere.”

Lex laughed, handed off the megaphone and shooed away the coast guard officer beside him.

"I won't keep you long. I just wanted to thank you for your stunning rescue. I've never seen you work in person this close, and now twice in the same day? I must say it's almost overwhelming."

With a smooth, practiced motion he produced a card from his inner pocket and held it up and out for Power Girl to take.

"I'm looking to expand my personal security team. Would you be interested in some private contracting?"

“You're welcome, and I really appreciate the offer, I do.” Kara smiled a bit abashedly, “But I've dedicated myself to using my abilities for the benefit of all. That said, if you, or anyone...” She addressed the last part to everyone who happened to be listening in nearby before turning back to Lex.  “needs my help, all you have to do is ask. Put an ad in the paper, post on a news forum, or just shout my name really loud, there's a good chance I'll hear you if I'm within a few miles. I'll work charity events or public functions, if there's a clear threat, but I can't accept any form of payment or sign any contracts.”

Worried that Lex might have hard feelings over being rebuffed in front of an audience, she quickly added, “I meant what I said before, I wish I could do as much for this community as you and your company do. It'd be a very attractive offer if I were interested in private contracting, I just have to do things my own way,  I hope you understand.”

Power Girl floated a little higher and spoke loud enough that everyone could hear her. “I've got to be going, but I hope you all don't let a little thing like a foiled robbery ruin your whole night. After all, it's not every day that you get to have a close encounter with a band of scurvy pirates. You can go home and tell all your friends and family that you had an adventure on the high seas that would put any Johnny Depp movie to shame.” Kara gave her best winning smile, showing off her perfect white teeth as she tried to lighten the mood of the party. “Don't forget to thank the Coast Guard, and I hope your night just keeps getting better!”

“Up, up and away!” she called out in parting as she ascended rapidly into the moonlit heavens, a silly little catchphrase borrowed from one of her favorite songs she had grown up listening to on the oldies radio station back in Smallville.

She shot off towards Metropolis, keeping level with the coastline, which she knew appear much darker than the sea or sky to anyone still watching her from the ship. Silently, she willed her smartsuit to turn black. The darn thing still glittered in the moonlight, but it was a far cry less obvious than her usual patriotic color scheme. She slowed to subsonic speeds and pulled a wide hook, heading back to the ship, and used her telescopic vision to help make sure she approached from an unobserved vector.
