In reply to The City-State of Kaergoth (msg # 45):

I was absolutely sure you said something about a forest. O.O Wow, I really screwed up that post, sorry.

I'm on board with the GM's idea. I'm the most flexible one in terms of location, as I don't actually have any territory yet. From what I've discussed with Kaergoth and my RTJ, the only requirement I have is that I arrive on the map from the desert to somewhere close to Kaergoth.

There's no rush. But I do look forward to it :)

It might benefit everyone to read a little bit about the last nation-states game I ran, and the sci-fi one floating out there..

These games are played on the scale of months and years.

The true beauty of the writing comes out as people create a legacy, layering story upon story. Your nation becomes something that has been around for a while. Your factbook / index thread will grow into its own library. The characters come and go, and end up with their own long history, having participated in many threads and storylines. Of course, many die.

Your empire may become a vassal state, or remain free. It may go through a revolution, or you may decide you want to create a totally different nation and focus on that one instead, leaving the old one abandoned or as a less-active puppet state.

Players will come and go, leaving the shells of abandoned nations behind to be played with, and bringing new blood into the fold.

Posting on an IC thread can occur at whatever pace the players are comfortable with, but since good writing and storytelling is the main focus, sometimes it will take a week or more for a player to come up with a good post. That's ok. We all have lives, and this will be here when you are ready to come WRITE.

----

This game will be what you, the players, make it. So think big. Think outside the box. Imagine the epic stories of your nations, and the smaller threads of individual lives that create the larger weave. You have freedom here. And that's why I hosted the game.. it's a unique, liberating and powerful way to create a story with others.

Re: Concept, Overview & Discussion
Overview

"This is the tale of a nation whose name has been lost to the passage of time and buried beneath sin, shame, and sorrow. There once was a nation whose people were proud and boisterous. They claimed to have the strongest military, the most delicious food, the most beautiful women, and that they lived like royalty. This was a nation that started as a small trade town that attracted many merchants and travelers the world over. Many traveled there with the intent to become permanent residents and as such, the once minuscule trading post exploded into an enormous city. Due to the rapid expansion, no leadership or laws were ever set into place there; it became an ever expanding kingdom of freedom. The sprawl stretched to every border and was only halted by the neighboring nations. Yet lawlessness, greed, corruption, and sin in such massive quantities was only a breeding ground for a much greater evil.

Monsters, demons, and devils were said to have been conjured from the nether, seemingly attracted to the negative energy that emanated from this now dark, desperate nation. The usual murders became massacres, people were found mangled in their homes, and unnatural acts were being carried out by once peaceful folk, said to be possessed by the supernatural. The nation had reached its limit and began to slide into chaos and ruin. It's neighbors suffered from monster and demon incursions often, yet all they could do was fend off the evils from their borders, powerless to help anyone from the darkness. Yet one evening, a light shone down from the heavens, brighter than all the stars as one. The light continued to grow, as every man, orc, elf, demon, and more stared at it's wonder, it's glory. Suddenly, in one synchronized gasp across the nation, they realized it wasn't growing; the light was falling. Then, in an instant, it crashed into the planet radiating it's light and power across the trade nation. So earth shattering was the force of the impact that some say the days are now longer than they once were.

The city, the chaos, the corruption, all was washed away in a flash, no... a crash of light. Nothing remained of the nation but ruin and the crater now left in the center of the land. Those who survived and those who came to seek out survivors could see a brilliant light emanating from the massive crater. The same white, brilliant light that fell from the sky. They all began a pilgrimage to the crater, walking for leagues among the ruins where buildings once stood, and the bones of the citizens and monsters alike. They made the climb up the tallest spire of the many that now surrounded the crater like slim mountains all bowing towards the center. Upon cresting the peak, their eyes were blessed with the sight of a now holy land. Verdant fields of green, vibrant blue lakes and rivers, majestic waterfalls, and mysterious natural stone pillars seemingly bathed in light were all left in the wake of the cataclysm within this massive crater. The people made this holy land their home, building their homes and cathedrals within the white stone obelisks, said to be the bones of the deity that cleansed the land. Yet to this day, though she sacrificed her body to cleanse the nation, her spirit still remains, blessing this holy site in Aenwynn's name.

This is how The Halidom of Aenthryl was born. It is Aenwynn's sacrifice that we owe our lives to. Our thankfulness and our prayers serve as a reminder of what once was, and mistakes that shan't be repeated."

-----

General

Nation State: The Halidom of Aenthryl

Government Type: Ecclesiocracy  - A government ruled by a small sect of religious leaders whose authority is derived from their deity, Aenwynn.

Duration of Government: The current system has been in place since The Reckoning in ancient times.

Cultural Type: Religious & Agricultural

Leader & Ruling Body: The Exalt, Lady Lyrith Vaeza and the High Council consisting of four chancellors. Lord Alexander Mycin, Archbishop of Aenthryl, Lady Elnora Valenta, Emissary of Commerce, Lord Tyrus Dirian, General of the Aenthryl Knights, and Lady Jysinia Maraketh, Matron of the Harvest.

Religion: Sanctism - The belief that Aenwynn descended from the heavens to purge the land of demons and sin, sacrificing herself to bless her people with the sanctuary lands of Aenthryl. As such the people open their arms to all seeking sanctuary so long as they remain peaceful and uphold Aenwynn's holy tenets.

Population: Medium to large. As a sanctuary with open arms, Aenthryl's population tends to fluctuate as refugees and pilgrims come and go. Some stay for weeks, others stay for a lifetime.

Races: Primarily inhabited by humans though many races have sought sanctuary and have become permanent residents. The Exalt and her chancellors are believed to be blessed by Aenwynn directly and as such are a race in and of themselves called Aenisir. Seemingly taller and fairer then typical humans, often having a metallic sheen to their hair and eyes.

Major Settlements: The Holy City of Aenthryl. It serves as the capitol, largest city, and only city within the halidom. Though it has a few simple names given to it by the simple folks that tend the farmlands on the outskirts.

Maraketh Market. Almost a village in and of itself, Maraketh Market lies in the space between the Holy City proper and the outlying farmland. This is where all the farmers congregate with their harvests and deliver them to the people. A large storehouse marks where the city meets the fertile land and inside is where the all the crops and food is stored and inventoried for distribution. These affairs are handled by the Matron of the Harvest and her people.

Terrain & Geography: The majority of the nation is in ruins. Rolling lands of desolation where nothing grows and old spirits linger. The wastes often see sand storms and dry thunderstorms that singe the land, yet continue to deprive it of moisture. The one oasis in the wastes is the Halidom of Aethryl itself, built within a massive crater at the center of the nation, The crater is vast and deep with jagged mountainous spires around the rim, bowing to the spot where Aenwynn sacrificed herself to cleanse the land of sin. Within the crater lies lush, fertile farm lands as well as verdant fresh water lakes and rivers that emanate from natural springs. The center of the crater is where the rivers converge into a large ring of waterfalls, pouring into an abyss of unknown depth. It is said that the abyss is a one way journey into the Soul of Aenwynn, the afterlife.

*plants flag*

Okay so here is a sort of proposal. I took the liberty of adding theoretical positions for everyone based on how their geography was described.

Didn't know where to even throw a dart for Aenthryl as there isn't much info to go on as far as climate in his stuff so far.

Re: Concept, Overview & Discussion
Yeah Aenthryl can be almost thrown anywhere. It's climate is 'wastes'lol. The crater itself has its own climate which stays pretty temperate. The rest is just wasteland with blowing dust and dry storms. That said, I was thinking northern and somewhat isolated? I suppose the fact that the only population exists in one spot within the nation kinda makes it remote already...

Re: Concept, Overview & Discussion
Ugh... Historically, Kastvia landed on the the west coast and plowed east, driving everyone in their way before them. That's one of the reasons the initial pseudo map had the area between Kastvia and the west coast a disputed warzone surrounded by militant neighbors in the form of Kastvian zealots, Sadrithi slavers, and Clan raiders. The current draft of the drawn map has Gorhal right in the plow zone. Additionally, the cities list for Gorhal makes secondary mention of the cities that reign over the passes on either side of the central pass through the mountains, the twin cities of Eastoll and Westoll. The range is along the southern coast, not the western coast.

Re: Concept, Overview & Discussion
Just to let you guys know, I am more than happy to have the entire lower section as the former Baagu Empire and leave the central area unclaimed, with the Remnants walking north/east until they reach Kaergoth, depending where it'll be placed. This also allows me to leave the size of the Fallen Empire vague, as we don't know just how much more land rests below.

Also, very nice work with this map! :D

Re: Concept, Overview & Discussion
Yup, same. Besides, it's normal for the first post to be more detailed and complex, as it needs to set the scene and establish the characters and some of their motivations for being there. The next few posts might become smaller due to how back-and-forth conversations work between two players, but that also depends on what's happening and how many characters each player 'controls'.

Sounds about right...once the pen begins to write, tis only the will of the Gods that we ever stop. I've been writing on and off for a couple of decades. Sometimes the words, like the Spice, must flow.

Meh it happens. Enjoy your thread. I am playing as Kal'Sadrith, and have yet to write that post I promised, but personal life bla bla. I'll get to it.

As for everyone else, the attrition rate for going from "cool idea! let's play!" to actually playing is pretty high for this type of game. I'll keep updating the new players advert and in time I imagine we'll get a solid core.
