Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

As Spring wanes and the planting is completed, the knights of Salisbury gather in Sarum and head as a group toward London.  A lot has changed since King Arthur's last Pentecost Feast, when Sir Gawaine defeated King Ryons, the Grey Knight.  Many Salisbury knights have died during campaigns, adventures, or the recent invasion by the Irish.  Many too have married, while new knights have been added to the rolls.  Earl Robert is now married to a Princess and his attention is not so firmly focused on his former County.

There is a feeling of excitement, tinged with trepidation.  The Knights of Salisbury won fame and glory for assisting Sir Gawaine and being elevated to the Queen's Guard.  However, the invasion of Salisbury has tarnished that image somewhat.  Still, there is much to look forward to and unlike years past, the Salisbury knights will be arriving a week early this year.  They will have some time to explore the city, meet people, shop, or perhaps even find adventure.

A few knights who were notably absent over the Winter have reappeared.  Sir Perin, short his left hand, tells grandiose tales of Dragons and the Far North.  As he tells it, Countess Fiona is not bothered by the lost appendage nor the burns along the left side of his body.  It seems that Dragons are not as heavy sleepers as reported.  He talks rather incessantly about Sir Loftrees and Sir Cormacc and his plans for getting back at them.  His attitude toward Praetor Jonathel has not improved much either.

Sir Alister has also returned from his voyages to the South.  Sadly, he was forced to sell his charger.  Fortunately, he had already received a larger Andalusian Charger from Praetor Jonathel.

Feel free to describe thoughts, plans, etc.  You will have a few days to wander the city, so think about what you would like to do, see, accomplish (either you or your character).  I will plot out a few mini-encounters for you to be able to meet some NPCs.  Most non-Saxon, non-Irish, non-Fae NPCs will be here.  There are probably even a few new women if anyone is in a courting mood and has anything specific in mind.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Gracian har returned to this world a somewhat changed man. His grief and pain is still evident yet he seems to carry it more stoically and no longer lashes out at the world around him. There are still far between his smiles and laughter though and from time to time he seems lost in deep thoughts and when he finally smiles it seems as if it is memories – recent or old, who knows – that make the knight smile.

He joins the knights of Salisbury on their journey from Sarum to London yet seems to avoid Sir Perin that seems lost in his never-ending feud with Praetor Jonathel. Instead he seek out the company of Sir Alister, Sir Garym and Sir Dalan.

He compliments Sir Alister on the fine Andalusian Charger and calls it “a magnificent beast worthy of a King”. He is glad the young knight were compensated for all the time and energy he put into the Quest for The Holy Sword the previous year and says he is certain that Sir Alister “will win Glory for Salisbury on a horse like that – and look good while doing it.”

Sir Garym is obviously in love and Gracian has heard rumours of Boars and a certain Baroness. Listening to the tales of how Sir Garym won the hand of Lady Arianwen he cannot help but feel a tinge of sadness as the tale makes him remember how he himself met his fair Lady Ariette.  Yet the time spend in the Kingdom Inapercu makes it easier for him to push the thoughts away and be genuinely happy on behalf of his friend. “I am glad to see you have found love, Sir Garym.” he says with a smile and a tinge of sadness in his eyes. “Enjoy it, cling to it, fight for it and never let go of it. As men we may win wars and build kingdoms but without a woman to dedicate it to it is all for nought.”

And when he knows no one else is there to listen he seek out his old and noble friend Sir Dalan. “It has been too long my friend and I have missed your company. But what more is I come to you to bring you news. I have been to the Kingdom Inapercu this Winter brought there by the Elven maiden Flydorill. She comforted me and … and I have a son with her. Now I did not see the maiden Aliandra but there is a chance that … “ Gracian raise an eyebrow.

Arrived in London and settled Sir Gracian seek out the church of friar Coombs and there prays for the soul of his beloved Ariette. He makes a donation of £5 to the Church and £5 to be distributed among the poor and ask for prayers to be said on behalf of Lady Ariette.

When that has been arranged he (and his squire Idres) seek out rumours of the other knights that will be there for the Tournament. Sir Gracian is determined to win Glory at the Tournament!

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Dalan traveled with his wife, squire, his men and her servants. Though a now distant Baronet in his own right Sir Dalan had thought it a sign of respect towards Earl Robert to at least arrive with the men of Salisbury. It had been a tough year and they had to look united.

He fell into easy conversation with Sir Perin for a time, but he was soon distracted by Sir Alister's magnificent steed. "As beautiful as a Spanish dancing girl my brother," he joked, though his tone couldn't disguise the look of admiration in his wide eyes.

It was also a pleasure to speak with good Sir Garym who seemed much recovered from his wound taken during the Irish invasion and of whom there were already stories spreading of fabulous adventures - and a radiant new bride. "Tell me my brother are the rumours true about a seat on the Round Table?"

However it was the words of Sir Gracian that left Sir Dalan momentarily speechless. Almost he had managed to convince himself that Inapercu and a night with the lovliest woman he had ever met had been a dream. Aliandra... Could she...?

After looking at Sir Gracian for a long shocked moment, he whispered back: "Congratulations my brother... a son by an Elven maid!" He shook his head in wonder. "I...  that is Ellowyn and myself have been trying..." He trailed off, not knowing quite what to say.

"Worry not my brother" Gracian said and placed his hand on Sir Dalan's shoulder. "I am certain that you will soon have a child. Good things are worth waiting for.

But now we are at the Tournament and you must push away all doubts you may have and win Glory for fair Ellowyn just as I am determined to win Glory for my Ariette ... one last time."
His voice trailed off until he seemed lost in thoughts for a moment before a tired smile crossed his face. "Yes ... we must win Glory at the Tournament!"

OOC: Not sure if the rules permit it but is it possible to invoke Gracian's Passion for Ariette at the Tournament? I have this idea of him riding one last time to honor Ariette, but I am not certain if the rules permit a Passion to be invoked if the person is deceased.

And if Teller has other plans then I am of course all ears. Tournaments tend to be exciting :)

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Going to a tournament was about the glory of participating, but this tourney was different. In the past; Garym was lost in the evening. He did not know what to say or do. He was polite, and even well spoken, but the social aspect of the feast was lost upon him. This feast, he was excited to attend. He had proven him self worthy in the court's eyes, and more importantly in his own mind. He also was going with Arianwen; he looked forward to dancing again with her even though he was not any better than their last dance. He knew it was prideful and Arianwen was not a trophy, but to be seen with her was to be the envy of any other knight. Not to be seen, but to be with.

Garym smiled often at the thought as the made their way to London. He hade brought quite an entourage for a vassal knight including his trusted Squire, the troubadour, and Arianwen's maid.

He wanted to spend as much time as possible with those that he considered friends, Gracian, Dalan, Sagremore, and all the others he had met at Bod Dynal. Gracian had made mention of the rumor of Garym taking a seat at the Round Table. He did not want to be proud, but he couldn't just say nothing. "I am not certain what is yet to come. Just last year, I would of longed for nothing more than to be a member of this order, but today I am fulfilled with or without it because of the many blessings the Lord has already given me."

Garym looks back to Arianwen as he finishes. What else could he need? Even before the thought is finished; Garym feels the pain of guilt for the Gracian's loss. What type of friend was he that would parade his on happiness over his friend's sorrow.

"The Lord merely presents a man with choices but it is up to the man to make the right choice, Garym. If you win a place at the Round Table then you do so because of the choices and sacrifices you made. The Lord gave us a free will, my friend. That is what makes us human."

Gracian leans in closer and smile as he goes on "... and I an happy for you. Both of you. I really am. I remember how proud I was when I first appeared at a feast with Ariette. It is a special feeling. Enjoy it - you earned it."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

The knights, after several days on the road, at last approach the City of London.  It is not quite the jumble of traffic from previous visits, as they are some of the first knights to arrive.  However, it is still a teeming metropolis that is difficult for the men from rural Salisbury to get used to.

As they begin to push their way through the throngs of people, Sir Perin excuses himself and heads off in search of the Countess Fiona, who he believes has already arrived.

Heading in what they hope is the direction of the White Tower, Sir Alister, Sir Dalan, Sir Garym, and Sir Gracian find themselves in a small square in the heart of the city.  As they start to head off in the direction a local priest instructed, a large procession enters from the West with porters yelling, "make way, make way for the King!"  The men who follow are a rough looking bunch, barely more civilized than Saxons to the eyes of the Salisbury knights.

Sir Garym recognizes the livery as that of King Belinans of Sugales (South Wales), a Cymric, Pagan who Sir Garym believes is related King Arthur.  In the carriage beside the King is an utterly gorgeous woman.  The carriage is led and followed by a group of knights who seem more than competent and a little more civilized than the remainder of the entourage.

Seeing the knights, the procession stops and the King bellows, "good Sirs, could you direct us to the White Tower?"

Sir Garym gets a check in Heraldry, the rest of you stink at Heraldry.  :)

"Your Highness, King Belinans, I am Sir Garym of Woodford. I would be honored to lead you and your entourage to the tower." Arthur was uniting the Britons as was example of these pagan knights. They may not civilized, but they were guests of the High King's hospitality. "My comrades, Sir Alister, Sir Dalan, and Sir Gracian, we hail from Salisbury."

"Well, lead on then good Sirs," the King replies.  The woman, who is not introduced, watches the knights from Salisbury with some interest but does not speak.

Fortunately, the friar's directions were true and easy to follow and after a few minutes the group arrives at the White Tower and Sir Constantine.  The knight first greets the King who thanks the party before being ushered inside.  Sir Constantine then turns his attention to the knights from Salisbury, "ah, Sir Dalan, Sir Gracian," he begins, nodding to each in turn.  "It is good to have you back," with a rueful grin, he notes, "I was sorry to hear about Sir Caradwg and Sir Tyngyr."  Looking at the others he inquires, "and who are your companions?"

"It is an honor to meet you, Sir Garym, and you, Sir Alister," he greets each in turn.  "The lists will be displayed in the Basilica next week the day before the tournament begins.  The monks will be recording names as usual."

Indicating a young boy he says, "Thomas here will get you to your rooms.  You have a few hours to get settled before supper in the main hall."

Garym inclined his head courteously to Sir Constantine as Dalan introduced him. Normally, he was a man of many words, but since returning from his quest he had found more joy in each moment. He of course looked forward to the tourney to come, but just standing her in the White Tower made him content. He believed that he was a lucky man to be living in the age of King Arthur and his beloved Queen Guinevere. It was a wondrous time of magic, prophecy and change. Not all had embraced Arthur's beliefs, but Garym believed that one day Arthur's ideas would reign supreme ushering a new prosperity for Noble and commoner alike.

Garym gave instructions to Budfannon to make sure the Horses were taken care of as well as the gear secured.

The evening meal is less formal than a feast but given the presence of King Belinans, it is slightly more upscale than the knights from Salisbury are normally accustomed to.  The King, Queen, and one of the knights are at the main table with Sir Constantine and his father Lord Cador.  The Salisbury knights share a table with a couple of the knights from Sugales as well as two other knights, none have previously met.

What would you like to do?

You can talk to the Sugales knights, the other knights, or among yourselves.  You can ask about whatever topics interest you or speak on any topic you like.  You will each have two chances to gather information or discuss topics of interest to you.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Gracian takes his seat as well. So many new faces in the crowd and so many familiar faces gone. The invasion and foolish quests has taken it's toll and positions has had to be filled. As one of the "old" knights Sir Gracian sees it as his duty to not just welcome the younger knights but also help set the standard and show what is required of a Salisbury knight. So he greets every Salisbury knight and tries to remember the names of the new ones, he ask them questions about how they are managing and offer advise on anything from land to etiquette to anything in-between. He remembers all too well what it was like to attend his first Pentecost Tournament and suddenly be standing next to Dukes, Barons and Kings.

And then he turns his attention to the knights of Sugales. They are guests of the High King and Gracian does not care if they are Christian or Pagan as long as they are men of honor and loyal to King Arthur. He raise his cup to them and speak out loudly. "A toast to the brave knights of Sugales and their noble King Belinans!"

OOC: Two Actions, you say? Action #1: Make the new knights feel welcomed. I dont know if it turns out to be Intrique or perhaps nothing at all. Action #2: Make the knights of Sugales feel welcomed. I suppose Hospitality is Gracian's thing :D

"To the Knights of Sugales and their noble King Belinans!" Garym raised his mug high, and drank to the toast. He did not drink heavily for he feared that it would dull him to much.

As the cheer finished, Garym rose up pausing for a moment to gaze into ArianWen's eyes. "I ask the court's indulgence as I speak of softer things than tournaments or campaigns for glory."

Garym leaves his place at the table, and starts to walk as he speaks. "Until last year I walked around like blind man, but I heard our Queen speak words of wisdom proclaiming the importance of love. I was not ready to understand them yet. I like many was rooted in tradition. Marriage was not a practice of love, but a contract that insured the family line. Negotiated and sealed with the exchange of a dowry. I left the feast thinking little of the Queen's words, but little did I know I would stumble blindly into their truth."

Garym looks back again at his wife. His one true love. "I found my damsel in distress. Much like the stories shared at bedtime to children. She needed me so I thought. Being a man of virtue; I saw no recourse but to help her."

Garym paused smiling devilishly before he continued. "Besides, she is one of the loveliest women I had ever seen. What else could I do? We travelled through adventure and danger, but in the end I realize that my Dearest, Arianwen, saved me from a life not living. A life without love."

One last time Garym paused. This time to compose himself less he make a unknightly show of emotion. Garym raised his mug high again. "I wanted to thank the Queen for making this a land where love reigns. To our Queen Guinivere. To Lady Arianwen who saved me. And finally, to all the Ladies of Kingdom that give life a purpose."

This time Garym drank his mug to the bottom. As he returned to his seat; he whispered to Arianwen "Thank you, my love."

The first of the knights responds to Sir Dalan, "I am Phillip of Ganis, my liege, King Ban sent me to compete in this tournament and learn more about the Court of King Arthur," he says in accented English.  The second man inclines his head, saying in a heavy brogue, "I am Imchad of Cruachu in Connacht, vassal to Eogan Bel."

Sir Gracian spends a bit of time explaining to the foreign knights how tournaments work and some differences in chivalry and custom, so that they feel a lot more comfortable.  (There are only about a dozen people here, you are the only Salisbury knights, others are quartered elsewhere.)

Sir Gracian criticalled Hospitality, gain a point in Hospitality.

King Belinans smiles at Sir Gracian's toast, raising his glass in acknowledgement of the toast but not drinking to himself.  "Yes," he replies, "Queen Guinevere's Court of Love is a flattering copy of my wife's Order of the Wreath," he indicates his as yet unnamed wife, who smiles radiantly.

Looking around, the knights notice that the knights at the high table are all wearing a green wreath with five golden flowers on their left shoulder.

Sir Dalan's eyebrows raise in surprise at the presence of an Irish knight but with an effort he keeps his cool. Britain was an island full of kingdoms, not all of which owed happy allegiance to Arthur. Perhaps Ireland was the same and not all served Muirchertach Mac Erca.

"Welcome to our fair country my brother's from beyond the seas. Sir Phillip, Sir Imchad I hope you accept a toast from a man of Salisbury to the universal brotherhood we knights share. To honour, to justice, to loyalty, to faith, to glory, to us. I wish you the utmost success in the tournament."

"Welcome to you both" Garym allowed the others to continue with the niceties, but he struggled with the fact that the Warrior from Ireland sat with them. He knew little enough of his own kingdom's intrigues, and even less of about the factions of Ireland. Until two years ago, the Irish lived in a different world than Garym, but now the Knights of Salisbury could not ignore their exsistence any more.

"Imchad, we of knights of Salisbury have come to know some of the warriors of your Isle. I will give them credit; they were truly cunning in their tactics on the battlefield. I have learned much by facing them, but the part that I do no understand is why they have targeted Salisbury?" Garym kept his tone level and polite because Imchad was a guest of King Arthur, but he longed to better understand, Garym wanted to be ready for when he next faced the Irish again.

Everyone drinks as the toast continue.

Sir Imchad shrugs, "probably Muirchertach Mac Erca" he sort of spits the name, "thought you weak or you had something he wanted."  With a remorseful shake of the head he concludes, "had we known that he had shipped a third of his men to fight you, we would have made him pay."

If 800 men is a third of Muirchertach Mac Erca's fores, then he has a LOT of men.

The rest of the meal proceeds and concludes.  In the morning, the knights have some free time to do as they wish.  What would you like to do?  You can seek out people, practice skills, look for items, pray at the religious shrine of your choosing, etc.  Not everyone is going to be here as yet.

There he knew he could find a palfrey worthy of his wife.

Sir Dalan visits the encampment of his knights near the lists and spends the day practicing with the sword.

Sir Dalan gets a check in Sword.

Sir Garym and his squire wander through the stables of several merchants looking for an appropriate horse for Lady Arianwen.  Due to the number of merchants, they are offered a good deal on either a palfrey (basic riding horse, MOV: 6) or a courser (combat and hunt trained, MOV: 9) for 4£.

Note:  The four of you arrived with Sir Robert and the Salisbury knights, as well as the knights of Dover's Crossing and Stonewall.  However, only the four of you are staying at the White Tower (mainly for simplicity).  Sir Perin appears to be off with the Countess somewhere and the others are camped near the tournament field.

He sent Budfannon to bring Arianwen to him. As she arrived; he  gesture to the Palfrey. "I wanted your opinion on her. I think she is a lovely animal."

Once she gave her opinion he smiles, "She is yours."

To be honest his horse actually scares him.

"Excellent." Sir Dalan tells his knights after an extended bout of sword practice. He is worn out and has to take steady breaths as he speaks but it has been a good chance to bond with the men. "Knights of Dover's Crossing, I am honoured to lead you.
This tournament shall be our first trial together, let us make it a memorable one. The knight who does best in this contest shall carry my banner in the Irish campaign."

So saying he taps his shield, emblazoned with the panther rampant on blue - his coat of arms.

Arianwen adores the horse and lets out a joyful squeal when she finds out that it will be hers.

Sir Gracian and Sir Dalan spend the afternoon with their troops.

The group is left to their own devices for dinner and the following day is Sunday, so those so inclined attend services.  Father Coombs gives a rather touching tribute to Ariette that leaves the congregation misty-eyed but also makes everyone smile at remembrances of the vivacious young woman.

On Monday, Earl Robert has all of his knights training together in various exercises throughout the day.

Tuesday dawns and everyone has another free day to get things done, learn, explore, catch up, or not.  You will have another day or two of freedom, probably.

Aware of the risk of pickpockets Gracian visits stall after stall talking to the shopkeepers and merchants about things like trade and taxes. He isnt looking to purchase anything specific and he doubts he will return with any goods but he is interested in the rumours and gossip from the marketplace.

On Tuesday Sir Dalan also gifted his own squire Melion a sum for him to spend, then offers to join Sir Gracian in his visit to the market: "A look around the city should be interesting and it would be a confident cutpurse indeed who tangled with two knights my brother."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Dalan and Sir Gracian wonder through the stalls and shops that seem to inhabit every usable piece of the area in the northern part of the city.  Sir Gracian is mindful of pickpockets while Sir Dalan seems unconcerned.

They come upon a string of shops with a variety of fashions for both men and women.  Sir Dalan stops in a shop with the latest in noble clothing looking for something that  Ellowyn might like while Sir Gracian looks at a pair of boots in the shop next to it.

Sir Gracian catches a snippet of conversation that peeks his interest.  A man, clearly a noble, with a valet and a couple of guards is discussing a dress with the shopkeeper.  "I need this for the Countess by Thursday," he says, caressing the soft fabric, "I want her to have it for the opening feast, so make sure it fits."

As the shopkeeper retreats with the emerald-green silk dress, the man's valet inquires, "what about the ruby necklace?"

Nodding, the man says, "it is perfect.  It matches her fiery hair.  Have it ready to be delivered to her on Thursday with the dress."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Garym and Lady Arianwen enjoy a leisurely day of riding and walking.  Taking advantage of those few precious moments they have together.  Fortunately, the mass of knights have not arrived yet, so they can still find a bit of tranquility outside the walls.

Sir Dalan is ever amazed by the price of garments.  A set of clothing of knightly materials costs 1£ and of noble materials costs 4£.  More exotic or high-end fabrics and styles are more.  Sometimes much more.  The dress that the shopkeeper Sir Gracian is talking to is holding costs around 8£-10£.

As part of his yearly maintenance, he has gotten Ellowyn new clothes but that does not mean that something special for the feast would be out-of-line.

Palming the money with a practiced hand, the shopkeeper smiles warmly and nods, "of course you understand how someone like the Dux of the City of Legions would not want his name and business bantered about."  His expression turns more serious and he whispers, "never mind what the Countess would do were I to even mention her name," he crosses himself and looks around nervously as if the mystery woman might show up at any moment.  The man is actually sweating.  He turns and hurries back into his shop perhaps worried that the very sun might give him away.

Tomorrow will be another day of training with the Salisbury knights, followed by one last free day before the tournament starts.  Is Sir Dalan buying?  Anything anyone wants to share with one another or others before our final free day?

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Imchad is happy to talk to Sir Gracian, who was nice enough to explain a few helpful things at the dinner a few nights earlier.  He explains a bit about the various Kingdoms in Ireland (See Game Map Group 1, force refresh if it is not Ireland).

Connacht, in the West is Irish/Pagan and ruled by Eogan Bel.  He has an army in the thousands of warriors.  It is a large and powerful Kingdom largely due to the Port of Galway.  Connacht has a long-standing and often bloody rivalry with Oriel.

Oriel, Aileck, and Meath are ruled by Muirchertach Mac Erca, the High King.  Meath is Irish Christian, while the others are Irish/Pagan.  Between them their army is a little smaller than Connacht's but has a small number of knights.

Dal Riada, Dal Araide, Dal Fiatach, and the Long Isles are ruled by Duke Galahaut and are Christian, part Irish, part Pict.  They have a smaller Army but lots of knights, as well as a lot of ships and sailors.  Pomitain, or the Island of Man, is a vassal state to Duke Galahaut, and is populated by Manx/Pagans who are aminly sailors.

Leinster is ruled by King Anguish, who is allied with King Arthur and hates Muirchertach Mac Erca.  The people are Irish/Christian and there are some knights, soldiers, and a small army of warriors.

Munster is the last of the Kingdoms of Ireland and is under Crimthann.  THey are Irish/Pagan and have an army comparable to Muirchertach Mac Erca's.

Sir Dalan has a very nice outfit for Ellowyn, who promptly shows him how much she likes it.  Maybe this will be the year he gets an heir.

Earl Robert nods appreciatively, although Sir Garym gets the sense that the Earl does not really get all of the nuance and is mostly just trusting the better tactician.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

At last, the start of the tournament is at hand.  The streets are full of knights, lords, and ladies, as well as throngs of commoners attempting to get seats.  At noon the lists open and all are free to sign up.  There will be a joust, a melee, and challenges.  There will be no arena combat this time around as the Queen has found it to be rather too savage.

Sir Perin returns and asks everyone to look out for Sir Loftrees during the melee, so that he can flatten him.  He is also thinking that looking out for Praetor Jonathel might be a good idea as the man clearly has it in for Sir Perin.  He very much likes the idea of showing the knights of Dorset who the best knights are and promptly challenges one after hearing about Sir Garym's plan, although from who, no one knows.

Schedule of events:

Day 1 - Opening of Lists, Welcome Feast
Day 2 - Joust (early rounds)
Day 3 - Joust (finals)
Day 4 - Melee, Challenges, Closing Feast

In what events are people entering?  If you plan to challenge some Dorset knights, feel free to come up with some names on your own that Earl Robert forwarded if you let him know of your plans.  You can also challenge other knights if you wish.

Sir Imchad knows a priest who might be able to help Sir Gracian, if he likes.

"I have been thinking about your words last night, Sir Garym, and you are right of course." he says to Sir Garym and Sir Dalan "We must show Dorset that Salisbury is ever strong. I dont know if you have any particularly in mind but I suggest we three challenge Sir Alein, Sir Gwinas and Sir Miles. I have only heard good things said about those fine knights - they are brave, noble and strong. I am not saying it will be an easy task but we need to show that the knights of Salisbury are not weak. And then he send his squire Idres to register Gracian for the events. He wants to enter the Joust and the Challenges (depending on what we agree on of course).

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

To summarize, everyone is entering the Melee and Joust, and Sir Dalan is challenging Sir Miles of Dorset, Sir Garym is challenging Sir Alein of Dorset, and Sir Gracian is challenging Sir Gwinas of Dorset.

Their tournament duties performed for now, the knights head off to prepare for the welcome feast.  Ellowyn and Arianwen are both decked out in new gowns, and the Countess Fiona is wearing a gorgeous emerald-green gown and a large red ruby necklace.  The gown seems rather familiar to Sir Gracian, as if he has seen it somewhere before . . . although it admittedly looks quite a bit better hugging her form than it did in the hands of the shopkeeper.

Knights are led into the feast hall in groups by their Liege, a fanfare announcing each as they enter.

The ladies are led to their own table, while Sir Alister, Sir Cadlew, Sir Dalan, Sir Garym, Sir Gracian, Sir Perin, and a half dozen other Salisbury knights are sent to a table on the other side of the room.

There are quite a few eligible women about tonight as well.

Sir Gracian hadnt felt like joining the feast and if it hadnt been for Idres, Gracian would have come up with some rather unconvincing story about why he couldnt attend the feast.

But now he is in the great hall listening to the conversation. Actually he finds it hard to concentrate because he is find his thoughts drifting back to happier days and other feasts. He feels amputated and lost without Ariette and from time to time he looks over to the ladies table as if expecting to see Ariette sitting there laughing as always. But of course she is gone and he force himself back to the conversation and the company of fellow Salisbury knights.

Gracian turn to look at who is sitting at the other tables. Some faces are familiar while others are not. Some he is told are eligible ladies and even though he look in their direction he quickly stop himself and feels guilty for even having looked.

Sitting at the table; he worried about Gracian a little. He knew that this feast would be difficult at best for him. He tried to warm, and distract Gracian from the weight of the loss he must be feeling. Still, he did not wish to over do it for Gracian needed to feel what he felt, and to try to sweep it away would be like sweeping the memory of his Arriette away. He had mentioned to Arianwen prior to the feast the importance of reaching out to Gracian during the feast, so he did not isolate himself.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

When everyone is seated, King Arthur rises and welcomes everyone to the Pentecost Feast and Tournament.  "It has been two years since our last Tournament and a lot has happened in the interim.  We have had a successful campaign in the north and expanded the benevolence of British Rule to new lands and brought more of our fellows within our Realm."  He spends a few minutes recounting the tales and notable achievements of those who accompanied him.

"We have also had our loses," he continues.  "Sir Lamorak's death has left an opening on the Round Table, while the invasion by the Irish has caused an acceleration of our plans to invade the Emerald Isle.  That invasion will occur this Summer and I expect those Lords who have been notified to have their knights at the City of Legions by the solstice."

"This will also be the last tournament in London," he proclaims, drawing out the stunned silence before adding with a smile, "I will be moving my capital to Camelot in the Fall."  Gesturing to his wife he announces, "and finally, the Queen will be announcing our newest Round Table Knight."

Queen Guinevere rises and smiles at her husband before addressing the attendees, "at the last Feast I announced the creation of the Court of Love, which will be installed in Camelot.  As part of that movement, I have called upon all knights to seek out and promote Love and Romance."  With a gesture, she signals Diarmuid to come forward.

"And now," she says, "Brother Diarmuid will tell you about how one of your number took my call to heart, literally."

Diarmuid tells Sir Garym and Arianwen's story, rather more eloquently than Sir Garym himself was able to do.  At the end, the Queen comes forward once more and proclaims, "for his dedication to the Court of Love, Sir Garym of Salisbury will be joining the Round Table."

The crowd gives a long and enthusiastic response to the news, and as it dies down, the feast begins.

To our gracious Queen that has brought Love into this Realm. And to a noble knight I am proud to call my friend - Sir Garym - and to the beautiful woman he loves so dearly - Lady Arianwen. A toast ... may Love reign supreme and may it last a thousand years!"

Gracian is elated by the news of Sir Garym joining the Round Table and causes him - for a while at least - to forget how much he miss his Ariette.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Dalan blinks in surprise at the news the King is to move his capital but he has scant time to digest that news before the Queen reveals Sir Garym has been granted the greatest honour. Not such a surprise but welcome news indeed and he erupts to his feet as Sir Gracian calls for a toast.

"To the King, to the Queen and to the Knights of the Round Table!"

Garym had heard of the possibility of his joining the Round Table, but until this moment it was not a reality. He felt somehow somber, but at the same time like he was in a haze from drinking too much wine. He saw his body respond to the well wishers. He drank to the toast given, but somehow he was deep in his mind mulling over the implications of what just had happened.

Several others take up toasts following Sir Gracian's lead.  After things calm down, the waiters bring out pastries to start off the feast.  People talk among themselves and soon heaping platters of broiled meats appear.  Pork and ham with a glaze and potatoes.

As the guests begin to feed, Sir Cadlew, who is sitting next to Sir Gracian, nudges him slightly and whispers, "anniversaries are the worst.  It was two years ago for both of us, when you met Ariette and when my big brother died."  He is silent for a moment before noting, "it gets a bit easier with time but still, anniversaries are tough."

As people finish up with the second course, minstrels begin to circulate, as do the guests.

Almost anyone you could want to talk to is around or you could practice up on some skills or try to learn some information.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Not quite knowing how to respond to Sir Cadlew' kind words Sir Gracian merely nods and empties his cup while mumbling something about "... I hope so ...".

When people start to circulate Gracian get up from his seat as well. In the past he would have found his Ariette because she always made him feel at ease. Feast and social events never seemed to become Gracian well because it made him feel insecure and uncomfortable but with Ariette he felt like the king of the world.

And now she was gone.

Gracian turns around ready to make some poor excuse about not feeling well so he can leave the feast only to find his squire Idres standing at the far wall shaking his head. Damn that man! So Gracian lets out a sigh and face the crowd of people circulating, small-talking and enjoying the festivities. He can not seem to find any familiar faces apart from his friends Sir Dalan and Sir Garym but they are all busy with their wives.

Making his way through the crowd he manage to smile, warmly greet people while being courteous and making idle conversation - and never quite feeling comfortable. He finds a quiet place and grabs a cup of wine so he can pretend to be busy while he tries to steady his breathing and calm his nerves. He wonders if he is the only one feeling lost and trying to figure out who all the new people are.

OOC: I should be practice some Skill to get a check but I imagine Gracian will be a slow starter at the feast.

And any new eligible ladies in the crowd? ;)

Garym waited a bit, but decided that he should go to Arianwen. She had a bit of time to speak with the other women at her table. He smiled at her with great affection. "I do not remember if I told you that Sir Gracian spoke with about love. I was surprised because not look the part of a romantic, but he was so transformed by his love for Arianwen[Ariette]. I am familiar with the same type of transformation because of your presence in my life. Now, I see him holding back, and I fear that a melancholy will take him which will cause him to act rashly. Maybe, you could draw him in to the feast for he is a very eligible widower. I will leave you to your womanly devices to aid our friend as I know he would aid us if so needed."

Garym leaves her as he said he would, but in some ways he was already feeling separation from her. He made his way to Sir Sacramore which he had travelled with as a companion on behalf of the Round Table business. He wanted to talk to him to better understand what his duties as a Table Knight would be, and what the plans were for the Knights of Round Table during the attack Invasion. "Sir Sagramore."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- Sir Gracian --

As Sir Gracian surveys the assemblage, hoping perhaps for a sign or a clue as to how to proceed, a voice to his right notes, "I am very sorry about Lady Ariette, she was truly a light in the darkness."  Looking over, Sir Gracian sees Sir Gwraid, Duke Morvid's* seneschal, an older gentleman but still clearly a warrior.

"The Duke is concerned for your well-being and thought perhaps I could lend a hand," he explains.  "While I cannot do much to help the hurt, there will be much to do around Stonewall this year and with the Summer campaigning season fast approaching perhaps I can make some suggestions on who might be able to assist."

* Duke Morvid of Glouster, Sir Gracian's liege.

-- Sir Dalan --

Sir Gawaine certainly remembers one of the knights who provided the whetstone that enabled him to dispatch King Ryons, the Grey Knight.  "Sir Dalan," he exclaims loudly, clapping the knight on the shoulder.  "Always the honeyed-tongue.  No wonder Lady Ellowyn is so fond of you, and the Princess as well from what I hear, and surely the Queen would prefer you as the King's champion to me," he jokes at the Queen's rather disdainful treatment of him after the wedding quest.

"As to leading men, it is nothing more than what you have been doing.  Any man that can stand up to a giant and the Fae can face down a bunch of heathen from the Emerald Isle.  The men follow those without fear and rise up to the challenge.  You will be a natural leader," he opines.

-- Sir Garym --

Arianwen nods and gets to work.

Sir Sagramoe welcomes Sir Garym with a firm handshake and greeting, "Sir Garym, it is an honor to have you among us.  Although I am afraid that the Knights are not a force used in war so much as examples and emissaries in peace.  We are often sent on the King's business to impress upon his subjects the ideals of his reign and sent on quests to further those ideals.  Your part in the invasion will be about your liege rather than the Brotherhood," he explains.

Turning to face Sir Gwraid he smiles gently and nods. "Indeed she was a light in the darkness - and thank you, Sir Gwraid. It is kind of you to say so."

For a moment he pause while carefully trying to figure out how to respond.

"Please tell the Duke that Stonewall will not be neglected. I will make sure it blooms and grows until it is the envy of the entire realm. I owe it to both the Duke and to the memory of my Lady Ariette.

I will always be grateful for any suggestions the Duke might have and I have full confidence in any advice and wise council that both you and the Duke may be so kind to offer me but I am in no hurry to get married."

Garym was almost disappointed that he was not going to ride with the Round Table Knights during the invasion, but Sagramore's words rung true. The Round Table stood for something better than war.

Garym spoke briefly about the plans he had presented to Earl Robert about the defense of Salisbury, but as he spoke he realized the best way to eliminate the threat of the Irish was to gain the Irish as friends. He did not know all the politics of the Isle, but Sir Imchad had made it clear that his liege had no love for those who attacked. "Has King Arthur made allies with the Irish lieges that oppose the faction we are fighting?"

-- Sir Gracian --

"Of course, we are sure that it will be so.  And obviously marriage should be the least of your concerns," he lies smoothly.  The man disappears back into the crowd, leaving Sir Gracian to survey the room.  His eyes, and in fact most of the eyes in the room, fall upon a lovely young woman in a rather immodest but clearly very expensive dress.

She is heading straight for the Salisbury table when Sir Perin intercepts her and the pair exchange pecks on the cheeks, after which they talk animatedly.  Sir Gracian glances over to see how Countess Fiona is taking all of this and notices that she appears not to be paying attention to Sir Perin at all.  In fact, she is dancing with a very familiar looking Duke.

-- Sir Garym --

"Oh yes," Sir Sagramore replies, "Liester is essentially an English beachhead.  The King has been working on getting in the middle of the Irish feuds for a few years now.  I think he planned to invade next year or the year after but the Irish invasion pushed the timetable up.  It just seems more practical and easier to 'sell' now."

-- Sir Dalan --

Sir Gawaine laughs, "my friend, none of us can fathom the mind of a woman.  The ones who try are those who end up in monasteries mumbling to themselves."  With that, the knight is dragged off to talk with some nobleman.

The next couple of courses begin to show up and the guests resume their seats.  Some steamed fish followed by the always-popular meat tiles.

Any table conversation before we head to our next mingling?

But Gracian knows what kind of women Perin seems to attract and what worries him even more is thinking about what others things that Perin has told Jacquette. If he has convinced the her that Gracian is an excellent dancer then what other lies has he not told the poor woman?

"Oh has he indeed, Lady Jacquette?" Gracian finally manage to mumble. "I am afraid that what my good friend meant to say was that I am a terrible dancer. I am a disaster on the dancefloor and I am sure that numerous wars would break out if I ever attended feasts with foreign dignitaries."

He sighs before smiling "I will not be known as the man that refuses a beautiful woman a dance, yet for your own safety and the safety of your toes I beg of you to reconsider."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- Sir Dalan --

Ellowyn's mood turns a little dark at mention of Ireland, something she has been dreading for some time.  "I wish you did not have to go," she murmurs.  "Such wretched people and without a scrap of Honor.  Were you captured in Britain you would be ransomed and brought home safe to me but there?  Who knows?  And if the worst should happen I am never find out about it," she seems close to tears.

-- Sir Garym --

The King and Queen decline Sir Garym's offer, as there are many others vying for their attention and the pair do not have the luxury of dancing, even at their own feast.

Arianwen, however, is happy to dance.  Sir Garym's prediction about his own abilities proves quite correct, unfortunately.  Even with Lady Arianwen's assistance, the pair seem a bit out-of-synch, although not so badly that it is noticed, especially as most knights are not particularly good at dancing.

"Have you heard anything about Bod Dynol?" Arianwen asks.  "I think Baron Baedd is supposed to be swearing fealty to the King tomorrow before the tournament starts."

-- Sir Gracian --

Lady Jacquette smiles beguilingly, "practice makes perfect, Milord.  The dance floor in the midst of a feast with thousands present is not the best place to learn, though," she suggests.  With a coquettish smile she notes, "of course it does provide some motivation not to fail but there are far better motivators, I have found."  She accidentally bumps into Sir Gracian and jiggles enticingly.  "Oops." she titters.

"I came with a delegation from King Ban of Ganis," she replies.  "The King and I both met Sir Perin when he came to France last year.  I helped Sir Perin find what he was looking for and he said that if I were ever in England and in need, he would try to help me out," she explains, staring up at Sir Gracian.

One would think that being a King that all things are possible, but I am thinking that most of the simple joys of life are replaced by the tasks of being royal."

As Garym danced poorly across the floor; he came to a realization that one day he should learn to dance. Not for himself, but for Arianwen. He found no great joy in dancing, but he did like making Arianwen smile. "Yes, I believe that is true, but I have not spoke to the Baedd or the others about it."

He closed his his eyes for a brief moment as Jacquette's perfume reminded him of Ariette. Then he opened his eyes and smiled a short sad smile.

"There are men in this room that would give all their possessions to be me, to stand here and talk to you, Lady Jacquette. Your beauty, your hair, your skin, your smile, the sound of your laughter. Men have died for less throughout history. And had I been another man then I would have done anything win your favor and perhaps carry your colors in the joust.

-- Sir Gracian --

"I have not spoken with Sir Perin since last year, and even then he discussed Fiona more than anyone.  This evening I asked him who the most eligible bachelor was and he simply suggested speaking with you would be worth my while," Jacquette replies.

"As for other men, that is rather their problem, non?  Any of them who have the nerve are free to seek my favor or find a spot on my dance card," she retorts sweetly.

With that, she kisses Sir Gracian's cheeks before sauntering off into the crowd . . . which includes a large number of eyes watching both her and looking to see if Sir Gracian is competition.

-- Sir Dalan --

Ellowyn puts on an encouraging smile but she remains worried, despite her husband's attempts to comfort her.

-- The Tournament --

Soon enough, the feast winds down and the guests depart.  The knights prepare for the morrow's contest and the rest prepare to spectate, wager, cheer, and intrigue.

The morning brings light rain and overcast skies.  This makes the joust a little more hazardous but it is something knights living in England are used to.  The day begins with the review of the participants, where each knight rides up in strict procession with their coat of arms.  While a seemingly simple task, it is not one most knights practice and few do it properly.

Sir Garym, however, has practiced and that practice pays off as he smoothly maneuvers his horse and adroitly places his arms in the proper position.  Sir Garym gets a check in Tournament and gains 10 glory.

In the first round, Sir Dalan draws a young knight from Estregales, Sir Garym draws an ordinary knight from Sussex, and Sir Gracian draws an ordinary knight from Lonazep.

Anything special anyone is doing at or after the feast or before the joust?  Watching anyone, looking for anyone, telling anyone anything, etc.?

"Wish me the speed and ferocity of my banner my love," Sir Dalan says, gesturing to the panther rampant that adorns his tabard and shield. Aware of his wife's concern he keeps his tone light and cheerful before he mounts his steed for the joust.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Gracian spends the early morning hours lost in thoughts about lost love while his trusted squire prepares Sir Gracian horse and armor. Finally he rise to his feet and dons his armor before letting Idres tie a deep green ribbon around Gracian's arm. The ribbon is from the dress that Lady Ariette wore at the Pentacost Feast just two years before when Gracian asked for permission to marry her.

One last ride for you, my love he mumbles before getting on his destrier and make for the tournament ground. He warmly greets the knights he pass and feel a sense of pride and confidence in his heart. Ariette will be with him today. He can feel it. He knows it.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- The Joust (Round 1) --

The Salisbury knights approach the lists on their large destriers, with the reputations of the top knights int he land.  It is little surprise that their opponents seem at best a little apprehensive.

Sir Dalan is the first of the three to ride and his young opponent seems barely able to hold his lance steady, perhaps cursing his luck to find himself facing a Famous Knight in the first round.

Pausing a moment to catch the faint scent of Ellowyn's perfume from her pale-blue favor, he drops his visor, couches his lance, and charges forward.  To his credit, the young knight manages to score a hit but Sir Dalan's hit is precise and powerful, knocking the young knight unconscious before he even hits the ground.  Although he will survive, the young man will be out of the tournament.

Sir Dalan gets a point in Lance.

Sir Garym is next.  Arianwen's sea-green favor gives him strength and courage and as he puts down his visor, he can see his opponent shaking his head in disbelief that he drew a Round Table Knight in the first round.  The knights charge forward and both hit but Sir Garym's blow is stronger and he knocks his opponent from the saddle.

Sir Garym gets a check in Lance.

Finally, Sir Gracian mounts up and assumes his starting position.  The dark-green length of dress on his arm feels warm and he can feel Ariette by his side.  His opponent, unlike Sir Dalan and Sir Garym's does not appear worried.  Perhaps he knows of Sir Gracian's grief and expects it to debilitate the Lord of Dinton and Stonewall.

The pair couch their lances and at the signal, charge forward.  Sir Gracian's opponent scores a good hit and Sir Gracian almost misses his target but at the last moment his lance dips and strikes the knight from Lonazep a mighty blow that knocks him unconscious from his horse.  Like Sir Dalan's opponent, the man will live but is out of the tournament.

Sir Gracian gets a point in Love Ariette and a point in Lance.

In the second round, Sir Dalan draws an Ordinary knight and Sir Garym and Sir Gracian draw young knights.  None of their opponents look particularly well as news reaches them of who they are facing.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- The Joust Round 2 --

After a rather dramatic series of wins in the first round, the Salisbury knights' luck seems to falter, except for Sir Gracian, who seems neigh unstoppable.

Sir Dalan misses his target and is unhorsed by a solid blow from his opponent.  Sir Garym, although hitting, is clobbered by the young knight who gets in a lucky shot and unhorses the Round Table Knight (continuing his streak of opponents criticalling him in the joust).

Sir Gracian, however, strikes true and once more he feels as if is lance is being guided as he sends another knight unconscious to the ground.

Sir Gracian gets a check in Lance.

-- The Joust Round 3 --

In the third round, Sir Gracian again draws an ordinary knight.  The pair face off and charge, both hitting but Sir Gracian's blow landing more forcefully.  The blow staggers his opponent but he remains seated.  They turn and charge and the Ordinary Knight misses the mark while Sir Gracian's lance hits and once more feels as if it is guided, knocking his third opponent unconscious.

-- The Joust Round 4 --

In the final morning round, Sir Gracian draws a notable knight.  The pair ready themselves and charge!  Their horses' thunder down the list and there is a crash as they come together.  Both hit but Sir Gracian's lance strikes true once more.  His opponent is thrown from his horse, barely conscious, a small victory in its own right on this day.

There is a short break for lunch before the Joust recommences in the afternoon.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- The Joust Round 5 --

After lunch, the fifth round of the joust begins, with a far smaller field.  Sir Gracian draws another notable knight.  Once more, feet in stirrups, visor down, lance couched and they are off.  The Notable knight catches his lance tip, which sends it flying and Sir Gracian lance unerringly finds its mark and send Sir Gracian's opponent to the ground.

-- The Joust Round 6 --

In the Sixth round, Sir Gracian draws another Ordinary Knight.  The man looks terrified.  Nonetheless, he mounts his charger and urges his horse forward at the signal.  Sir Gracian hits his opponent but the ordinary knight's blow is the better one and does 31 points of damage (on 6 d6!), knocking Sir Gracian from his horse.

Sir Dalan and Sir Garym get 15 Glory for surviving the first round.  Sir Gracian gets 120 Glory for making it to the sixth round.

Everyone will be healed by dinner time, although there is no feast tonight.  Any plans for the remainder of the day?

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Gracian is surprised by how time seems to slow down when you hang suspended in mid-air from the moment you are hit by a lance and unhorsed and till you hit the ground with tremendous force. It gives a man time to think and Gracian has plenty of time to think. Think about his life, the Grey knight, Dinton, Stonewall, Ariette and how they first met, the first kiss, the first time they .. well .. did things. She liked tournaments with all the glamour and colors. She would have wanted him to do well this last time and Gracian has done well.

So as Gracian falls to the ground he cant help but smile. He doesnt mind being unhorsed. In fact it feels right somehow. When he hits the ground and for a moment slips into the darkness he knows that he is at peace now. She would have been proud of me he thinks before he feels all the air being knocked out of him.

Moments later Gracian can feel Idres trying to help him get back on his feet. "I am alright, Idres." he mumbles with a grin on his face. "More than you know." As he finally manage to get up from the ground he raise his hand in salute to the gathered crowd and to the knight that unhorsed him before he is led to his pavilion.

He send his squire to Sir Adair, the knight that unhorsed him, to congratulate him on the victory and praise him for his skill with the lance. By the time Idres returns Sir Gracian is sleeping like a baby for the first time in many months.

Rules Question: Gracian took 31 points of damage. Are they healed/restored the next day?

He knew he could not spend much time in the tent, or Arianwen would sense his vanity in this matter. Eventually, he brought himself up from his resting spot. He realized a simple fact that he was not the knight his father had envisioned, but he was his own man who decided his own path for good or bad. Setting out of the tent he was much more jovial. Which was a great surprise to Budfannon who was ready for  his traditional after loss berating. "Good Budfannon break down today's kit, and make sure of preparations for tomorrow. Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

The knights sleep well and in the morning watch the finals of the joust.  Sir Sagramore wins the joust and the prize money that goes with it.  In the afternoon are the challenges (I sifted things slightly).

Sir Dalan challenged Sir Miles of Dorset.

The two salute and when the flag is dropped, they spur their horses toward one another.  Sir Dalan's lance goes wide but Sir Miles strikes Sir Dalan squarely, doing 9 points of damage and knocking Sir Dalan from his horse.

Sir Garym challenged Sir Alein of Dorset.

The knights ready themselves and charge forth, their horses teraing chucnks of sod from the earth.  Sir Alein's lance goes wide and Sir Garym hits him, but the kight from Dorset manages to stay on his horse.  On the second pass, both knights strike true and Sir Alein does 1 point of damage to Sir Garym, who stay astride his destrier.   On the thrid pass, Sir Alein again misses and is unhorsed by Sir Garym's blow.

Sir Gracian challenged Sir Gwinas of Dorset.

The knights take their places and charge, they come together with a resounding crash and the splintering of wood as their lances shatter.  Getting new lances, they charge again, both hitting but Sir Gwinas getting the better blow.  Sir Gracian takes 2 points of damage and remains in the saddle.  On the third pass, both knights hit for the third time but this time it is Sir Gracian's blow that succeeds and Sir Gwinas is unhorsed.

Anything anyone wants to do prior to the melee on the final day?

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

The final day of the tournament dawns overcast but not raining.  While the feast and the jousts were filled with festive gaiety, the melee is a grand spectacle.  With about one thousand knights per side, it is very much like an actual battle.  The Salisbury knights, along with those from Escavalon and Gloucester (thus encompassing Cardiff, Hereford, and Stonewall, as well as Bod Dynol), occupy the right-center of the King's line.  Sir Gawaine is leading the battle for Arthur while Sir Belinans is in charge of the opposition, with Sir Gwaid leading the battle itself.  Many of the northern kingdoms, including Cheshire, Orofoise, Cameliard, and Lambor, are on the opposition side.

Sir Perin is leading the Hereford knights once more, while Sir Dalan and Sir Gracian are leading their own knights.  Sir Garym can be with the Salisbury knights or those of Bod Dynol.  Sir Perin has been grumbling about Sir Loftrees again, and seems only to have not mentioned Praetor Jonathel because Dorset does not have many knights and they are on Arthur's side in this melee.

Anything anyone wants to do prior or any general plans for during the melee?  Head for the opposite leaders, the flag, capture enemy knights, hide in the back, etc.?

Sir Dalan convers with his knights for the first time before the battle. His shield is emblazoned with his personal standard (the panther rampant on azure) to give his men an idea whom to look out for.

"We are not Saxon beserkers my brothers. A wild charge trusting all to sheer ferocity will not carry the day. We must be careful, clever. Our aim is to capture opposing knights, and weaken the enemy that way as the wolves harry even the mightiest of stags one bite at a time."

He gestures to the opposite line. "Forget the leaders and forget the richest knights. True to take such would bring rich prizes but all men will seek them out - and whether by their own skill and experience or by the protection of others they will be well protected. Look instead to the younger knights among the opposite side instead - hotheaded youths, looking to prove themselves, less veterans of long battle. As men they'll be steady fighters but many of them won't be thinking fighters. We'll try and draw the brash ones out."

Garym had decided to fight with Bod Dynal because there was a chance one day that he may have to lead these knight as its Lord, and only by standing by them would they be able to respect him.

He knew Sir Gawaine had much to do in preparation, but Garym wanted to speak to the legendary knight. "Sir Gawaine, I am sure that you have formulated a strategy already, but maybe I could make additional suggestions. Or, better yet you could give direction to me and the Knights from Bod Dynal. I was wondering if you considered making a feign attack towards their leadership with a large number of our forces, and once they have moved into a defensive position to protect their leader. We halt our advance in a defensive holding pattern. This would allow a large number our knights to surge forth towards the flag. In turn they will have to make a decision whether move to counter the attack or continued to protect their leader. Depending on their choice dictates are next action. We will either push forward hard as they move to protect the flag, or our force attacking the flag moves forward to take flag facing lighter opposition."

Instead he turns to his men from Stonewall and sits still on his horse for a moment before speaking. "I have been absent and neglected my duties. Our Lady Ariette was taken away from us .. from me .. and for a while I lost my heading.

It wont happen again."

He pause trying to find the right words before continuing.

"I never liked the Melee and always considered it nothing more than a grand spectable. But soon we will fight side by side in Ireland and teach those barstards a lesson or two about what happens to those that bring fire and steel to our shores. People will die on that campaign but I intend to make sure we wont be the ones dying. The Melee today is our one and only chance to test our skills before we head to Ireland. Remember that. Glory won here today means nothing in Ireland so stay together, show them what the men of Stonewall are made of and pay attention to my commands."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Gawaine replies to Sir Garym, "nothing so fancy in this contest I am afraid."  He points to where Sir Gwaid's banner flies near the enemy flag, "you see Sir Gwaid there is rather Proud (notable attribute at 18).  He is only a middling commander but he fancies himself good with a sword."  Gawaine snorts, "so he'll attack our flanks, confident that he can hold the flag on his own with his brothers from Powys."  With a grin he notes, "but he's wrong."  As an afterthought he mentions, "anyway, when playing with the ransom rules, knights tend to get focused on individual battles and gaining glory and money rather than heading a commander's strategy."

Note:  As with the last tournament Arthur held, if you are captured, you have to pay your captor a year's upkeep (Poor (4£) Ordinary (6£) Rich (10£) Superlative (12£)).  These rules were not in effect at the Salisbury tournament.

Sir Gawaine's orders go out to the commanders.  The Salisbury and Hereford knights are to form up around Sir Gawaine for a charge in the second round of battle.  The others are to charge forward and engage the enemy.  Sir Gawaine likes simple.

The Battle commences and as both commanders succeeded at their Battle rolls, there are no modifiers.

Sir Gwaine, rolled 15 using 1d20.  Battle.
Sir Gwaid, rolled 7 using 1d20.  Battle.

The armies come together in a grand charge of horses and men.  As expected, the opposing forces weight their flanks, leaving their center less heavily manned.  Sir Gawaine's forces are spread fairly evenly, with about one hundred knights (40 from Salisbury and 60 from Hereford) remaining around Sir Gawaine, appearing as a unit of bodyguards, similar to the group of Powys knights surrounding Sir Gwaid.  There is no obvoius advantage to either side at the start.

Arthur, rolled 7 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 7 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan and the knights of Dover's Crossing head forward, with little chance as yet to choose individual opponents.  However, his forces stay to the right and in front of Sir Gawaine's 'reserves.'  There, they will be able to intercept any young and foolish knights who think to engage Arthur's commander in hopes of great glory and riches.  Sir Dalan encounters an Ordinary knight and skewers him with his lance.  The man's own lance goes wide but Sir Dalan's blow is weak and the man stays on his horse.

Sir Dalan, rolled 11 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Dalan, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Lance.
Ordinary Knight, rolled 18 using 1d20.  Lance.
Sir Dalan, rolled 16 using 8d6.  Damage. (That is some crap rolling)
Ordinary Knight, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
The Ordinary knight takes 16 - 10 = 6 damage but stays mounted.

Sir Garym rides with the knights of Bod Dynal and comes upon an old knight.  Sir Garym's lance strikes true but his opponent's lance gets caught in his reins and he drops it.  Sir Garym's blow knocks the man from the saddle.

Sir Garym, rolled 17 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Garym, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Lance.
Old Knight, rolled
20 using 1d20.  Lance.
Sir Garym, rolled 24 using 8d6.  Damage.
The Old knight takes 24 - 10 = 14 damage (a major wound) and is knocked from his horse.

Sir Gracian and the knights of Stonewall charge forward and Sir Gracian encounters an Old knight.  Both knights hit but his opponent has the better blow, which, despite the low damage, knocks Sir Gracian from the saddle (you really need to improve Horsemanship).

Sir Gracian, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Gracian, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Lance.
Old Knight, rolled 7 using 1d20.  Lance.
Old Knight, rolled 22 using 6d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian, rolled 15 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
Sir Gracian takes 22 - 18 = 4 damage and is unhorsed.

Sir Dalan can continue with sword on horseback with his current opponent or search for someone different.  Disengaging allows your opponent a free, unopposed attack.  However, he could attack someone new in round 2 . . . if not unhorsed first.

Sir Garym can remain with his current opponent and demand surrender (the guy is at 8 HP and goes unconscious at 6) or continue onward and let someone else collect the ransom.  'Collecting' ransom requires one missed turn.  Otherwise he can attack a new opponent in round 2.

Sir Gracian can call on his knights to surround him to allow him to remount and fight again in round 3 on horseback or continue against his current opponent on foot with swords in round 2.  Or, you know, just surrender now and avoid future embarrassment.  :)

Feel free to detail anything special you are doing or trying to accomplish now that you know the grand strategy (hold the line, Sir Gawaine and his 100 knights crush the center and take Sir Gwaid and the banner).

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- Melee Round 2 --

The second round of battle, much as the first, shows no advantage to either side but then it is still early.  Of special note, however, is that Sir Gawaine's charge did not occur.  It seems that Sir Perin spotted Sir Loftrees among the enemy and rushed off to unhorse him, leaving more than half of Sir Gawaine's shock troops directionless.

Arthur, rolled 9 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 9 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan continues to fight his existing opponent and while they both hit with their swords, Sir Dalan's blow is the truer and his opponent is knocked from his horse.

Sir Dalan, rolled 14 using 1d20.  Sword.
Ordinary Knight, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Dalan, rolled 23 using 5d6+2.  Damage.
Ordinary Knight, rolled 17 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
The Ordinary knight takes 23 - 16 = 7 damage and falls from his horse.  He is at roughly half damage.

Sir Gracian, on the other hand, continues to struggle against the wily Old knight.  His blow goes wide but the Old knight tags him, knocking him from his feet.

Sir Gracian, rolled 18 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 8 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 17 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian, rolled 9 using 1d20.  Dexterity.
Sir Gracian takes 17 - 12 = 5 damage and is knocked to the ground.  Again.

Sir Garym's opponent surrenders.

-- Melee Round 3 --

Seeming to sense some sort of problem, the enemy presses forward with reckless abandon, beginning to push back Arthur's flanks.

Arthur, rolled 19 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 1 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Dismounting, Sir Dalan confronts his opponent and slashes him with his sword.  Sir Dalan's opponent hits back but it is Sir Dalan's blow that scores, knocking his enemy to the ground.

Sir Dalan, rolled 9 using 1d20.  Sword.
Ordinary Knight, rolled 7 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Dalan, rolled 21 using 5d6+2.  Damage.
Ordinary Knight, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Dexterity.
The Ordinary knight takes 21 - 16 = 5 damage and is knocked off of his feet.

Sir Dalan's opponent is around 1/3 health and will likely capitulate if asked.  Sir Dalan can request his surrender and remount next turn and be ready to attack again on horseback in Round 5.

Sir Gracian gets to his feet but is promptly knocked back down by the wily codger.

Sir Gracian, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled
20 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 25 using 8d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian, rolled 14 using 1d20.  Dexterity.
Sir Gracian takes 25 - 18 = 7 damage and is knocked to the ground, yet again.  :D

Sir Garym, back in the saddle and ready to increase his purse, finds an Old knight and charges at him, sword drawn.  Both strike true but Sir Garym is a little quicker and he slices the Old knight, who remains astride his horse.

Sir Garym, rolled 14 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Garym, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 4 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Garym, rolled 14 using 5d6.  Damage.
Old Knight, rolled 13 using 5d6.  Horsemanship.
The Old knight takes 14 - 16 = 0 damage and remains in the saddle.

Sir Dalan can demand his opponent's surrender.

Sir Gracian can cut his loses and give up now.  :P

Sir Garym can continue with his current opponent or try to find a new one, but it would entail allowing an unopposed hit.

Sir Dalan dips his sword and smiles at his opponent. "You have fought well Sir Knight, with skill and honour but I believe the day has been mine. I would be most grateful for your surrender."

As soon as he can remount his steed Sir Dalan attempts to rally his knights around him. "We must assist Sir Gawaine. To the centre - perhaps with our support he can still make that charge!"

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- Melee Round 4 --

The Dux of the City of Legions rides up and takes command of the Hereford knights and the group charges, along with those of Salisbury, crushing the center of the opponent's line.

Arthur, rolled 15 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan's opponent surrenders and he re-mounts his horse.  He and the knights of Dover's Crossing can exploit the large hole in the front of the opponent's line next round.

Sir Gracian, on the other hand, seems to finally be getting the knack of this.  He and his opponent each swing their swords at each other and there is a metallic clang as they crash together but neither man is injured.  "Flydrigg," the Old Knight responds with a gasp.

Sir Gracian, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Sword.

Sir Garym swings wide, missing another opportunity to finish his opponent off.  He takes 5 points of damage but remains astride his destrier.

Sir Garym, rolled 18 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 3 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 17 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Garym, rolled 19 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
Sir Garym takes 17 -15 = 2 damage but remains in the saddle.

-- Melee Round 5 --

Sir Gawaine and his hundred knights slice through the center of the opposition and threaten Sir Gwaid and the flag.  The knights of Powys move to engage but do not look like they will hold long and Sir Gawaine himself seems to be heading in Sir Gwaid's direction.

Arthur, rolled 1 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 17 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan and his knights rush into the wake of the charging knights from Hereford and Salibury.  He comes across an Old Knight and the pair exchange blows.  Although both hit, the Old knight's blow is the better one, although it does no damage.

Sir Dalan, rolled 14 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Dalan, rolled 17 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 11 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 14 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Dalan takes 14 - 15 = 0 damage and remains in the saddle.

Sir Garym trades blows with his own Old Knight and gets the worse of the engagement but takes no damage.

Sir Garym, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 10 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 6 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Garym takes 6 - 21 = 0 damage.

Sir Gracian is knocked to the ground once more despite landing a solid hit on his opponent.

Sir Gracian, rolled 15 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 15 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Dexterity.
Sir Gracian takes 15 - 12 = 3 damage and is knocked to the ground . . . again.

-- Melee Round 6 --

The knights from Powys hold their line, at least for the moment, as Sir Gawaine attempts in vein to get to Sir Gwaid.

Arthur, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Speaking of stymied, Sir Dalan, misses his opponent, who tags him for 4 points of damage, although he remains mounted.

Sir Dalan, rolled 18 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 19 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Dalan, rolled 11 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
Sir Dalan takes 19 - 15 = 4 damage but is not unhorsed.

Sir Garym trades blows with his opponent, who hits but fails to damage Sir Garym.

Sir Garym, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 9 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 14 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Garym takes 14 - 21 = 0 damage and remains mounted.

Sir Gracian, meanwhile, rises and misses but takes only light damage from his own opponent.

Sir Gracian, rolled 17 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 1 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 13 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian takes 13 - 12 = 1 damage and remains standing.

Sigh.  The problem with Old Knights is that they have a 21 Sword but only do 4d6 damage.  So they hit a lot but do very little damage and fold easily when hit.  You just can't seem to hit them.  :(

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- Melee Round 9 --

Arthur's forces, perhaps realizing their peril, manage to hold the flanks before they both collapse.  Sir Gawaine, however, is still unable to break through the screen of knights.

Arthur, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 4 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan continues to underwhelm as he losses his grip on his sword once again.  Although his opponent hits him, the blow is weak, perhaps suggesting that the Old Knight is tiring.

Sir Dalan, rolled 20 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 17 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 9 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Dalan takes 9 - 15 = 0 damage.

Sir Garym, however, tries a new tactic, allowing his opponent to hit him and then returning the blow.  He takes a few points of damage and then lets loose a powerful blow that knocks his opponent unconscious.

Old Knight, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 18 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Garym, rolled
17 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Garym, rolled 40 using 10d6.  Damage.
Sir Garym takes 18 - 15 = 3 damage.
The Old Knight takes 40 - 10 = 30 damage and is knocked unconscious with a major wound.

Sir Garym gets a point in Sword.

Sir Gracian also continues to struggle, perhaps wondering or even longing for the end of this seemingly endless battle.  He and his opponent both hit but the Old Knight's blow is the superior one, although it does no damage.

Sir Gracian, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 12 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian takes 12 - 21 = 0 damage.

-- Melee Round 10 --

Sir Gawaine finally gets around the edge of the Powys knights, with a little help from Sir Garym, who races up to engage the last knight between Sir Gawaine and Sir Gwaid.  The flanks seem to be holding for now, but who knows how much longer they can keep the enemy at bay?

Arthur, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan finally strikes another blow against his opponent, who seems to be slowing down a bit.  However, the other knight remains in the saddle.

Old Knight, rolled 8 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Dalan, rolled 18 using 5d6+2.  Damage.
Old Knight, rolled 7 using 1d20.  Dexterity.
The Old Knight takes 18 - 16 = 2 damage and remains astride his mount.

Sir Gracian also has a change of luck as he also hits his opponent, who crumples as he falls, seemingly injuring his ankle.  It seems likely that the Old Knight will be unable to continue.

Old Knight, rolled 5 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Gracian, rolled 18 using 5d6.  Damage.
Old Knight, rolled
20 using 1d20.  Dexterity.

Sir Garym, free at last, gallops forward and spots Sir Gawaine.  Sir Garym intercepts a knight who seemed intent on preventing Sir Gawaine from getting to his commander.  The Knight gets a mighty blow in but Sir Garym blocks it, taking no damage and remaining in the saddle.

Sir Garym, rolled 3 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 10 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 21 using 5d6.  Damage.
Sir Garym, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

"Good Sirs, this battle will be won by those who want it worse. Tell me do you want to go back to your households and manors knowing that the other Knights are better men then thee!!! Or, will you fight as this was your last battle, and all that you hold dear is at risk of being loss. What we do here today sends a message to all that might oppose King Arthur that no matter the battle we shall always fight to win!!!" Garym knew that several of his fellow knights did not view battle as he did. They saw it as less important, but Garym as he studied battle had came to the realization that the world would be better with these demonstrations than constantly fighting for the crumbs off each others tables.

Exhausted but devoutly grateful the old knight had lowered his sword Sir Dalan remounts his steed and tries to regroup his knights.

"Men, the left flank is in danger. On our own we can't stem the tide but we may be able to slow it and give time for the King to regroup. Harry the foe - avoid being dragged into direct combat but see if we can draw some of their men away from the main force. Or at least force them to move more slowly and cautiously."

Gracian roars and push himself harder as he engage the enemy where the fighting is the most fierce. He attacks his foe with all his strength even though his body feels weak and tired while shouting words of encouragement. The right flank must not fall and he is determined to show his fellow knights that defeat is not an option.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

-- Melee Round 14 --

Sir Gawaine grabs the enemy flag as Sir Dalan and his knights reinforce the left flank.  Things look grim for the Northerners as Sir Gawaine heads back with the flag behind a wedge of Hereford knights led by the Dux of the City of Legions.

Arthur, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan attempts to rally those around him but in the confusion is only able to assemble the remainder of his own knights.  Fortunately, they are enough to hold the flank for the moment as Sir Dalan crosses swords with an Old knight who tags him but does no damage.

Sir Dalan, rolled 3 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Dalan, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 18 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 17 using 4d6.  Damage.
Sir Dalan, rolled 10 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
Sir Dalan takes 17 - 21 = 0 damage and remains astride his destrier.
Sir Dalan, rolled 13 using 1d20.  Orate.

Sir Garym, meanwhile, lands a shattering blow that renders his own opponent unconscious.  Thus freeing him up to join the soon-to-be victorious forces with Sir Gawaine.

Sir Garym, rolled 18 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 6 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Garym, rolled 39 using 10d6.  Damage.

Sir Garym gets a point in Sword.

Sir Gracian comes across a Notable knight who attempts to pummel him but manages only to dent Sir Gracian's armor.

Sir Gracian, rolled 8 using 1d20.  Opponent.
Sir Gracian, rolled
20 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 4 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 18 using 5d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
Sir Gracian takes 18 - 18 = 0 damage and remains on his horse.

-- Melee Final Round --

The wedge makes it back over the line and Sir Gawaine plants the captured flag next to the King's banner, signalling the victory.

Arthur, rolled 8 using 1d20.  Battle result.
Opponent, rolled 3 using 1d20.  Battle result.

Sir Dalan gets in a final blow on his latest nemesis but fails to knock him off of his horse.

Sir Dalan, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Sword.
Old Knight, rolled 2 using 1d20.  Sword.
Sir Dalan, rolled 19 using 5d6+2.  Damage.
Old Knight, rolled 12 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.
The Old knight takes 19 - 16 = 3 damage but remains on his horse.

Sir Gracian fails spectacularly at staying on his own horse after exchanging blows with his final opponent.

Sir Gracian, rolled 6 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 16 using 1d20.  Sword.
Notable Knight, rolled 20 using 5d6.  Damage.
Sir Gracian, rolled
20 using 1d20.  Horsemanship.

Sir Garym meets no new opponents as he rides behind Sir Gawaine.

And finally the melee is over, perhaps to everyone's relief.  Everyone has about half a day to recuperate in time for the farewell feast.  All wounds will be sufficiently healed as not to affect anyone by then.  Glory and prize money will be calculated.

-- Farewell Feast --

The Salisbury knights retire to their beds and are refreshed by the time the final feast rolls around.  Although it seems that Sir Garym did the most rolling around.

As usual, King Arthur welcomes everyone to the feast and thanks them for participating in the tournament.  He bestows upon Sir Gawaine the wreath for winning the Melee and congratulates all participants.  With a nod to King Belinans, he sits down.

King Belinans then rises and addresses the assemblage:  "I, King Belinans of Sugales, do wish it to be known that I will host a tournament in honor of the Calen Hae (Beltain) next Spring.  All knights are welcome to try their skill in friendly competition with my knights, the best, bravest, and strongest in these isles.  Ours is the heritage of a people never conquered by the Romans.  Yet we have taken the best they had to offer and have added to our nation's list of qualities.  Let us see if there is anything of worth you can bring to us."

There is a great deal of murmuring as the first course, pastries, is brought out.

Sir Perin, meanwhile, is excited to tell you all how he spotted Sir Loftrees at the beginning of the melee and knocked him unconscious.  He seems anxious to tell Fiona all about it but she was not around after the melee.

Sir Dalan gets 70 Glory and £8 in ransom.
Sir Garym gets 100 GLory and £12 in ransom.
Sir Gracian gets 80 Glory and £8 in ransom.

Glorious is this day and age where peace rule our land and knights exchange blows on tournament grounds and not on fields of battle! A toast ... may all that rule the land be as wise and noble as our Kings"

Truly happy...

Looking across the room he saw his lovely Arianwen, and world stopped spinning. She was his world, and more than that she made him want to be a better man... a better knight.  But, the joy he felt he wanted to bring to his people... He needed to give back that which he was given to those he was sworn to protect.

The crowds of people ceased to exist as he quickly went to her. He knew that his actions were almost unseemly for public. He gently spun her around, and simply stared in her eyes for a long moment before he spoke. "Thank you, my lady and life. I love you."

Arianwen nods, "I would like that.  So many people and so much to try to figure out, it is all making my head spin a bit," she admits.  The night is pleasant and once out of the main hall, the noise volume drops dramatically.

Sir Gracian looks around, spotting Jacquette dancing with, well, two knights it appears.  One seems to be attempting to cut in while the other seems unwilling to allow that to happen.  It seems a duel could be imminent.  Over on the other side of the dance floor, Sir Perin and Fiona seem to be arguing about something.  Or at least Sir Perin seems to be arguing, Fiona seems to simply be nodding.  A number of other attractive ladies are dancing or chatting.  So much to see and do.  Sir Gracian gets the feeling that someone is watching him.  Scanning the room, however, reveals nothing, although the feeling seems to wane as he looks over toward a far corner. He wonders if he imagined the curtains there moving.  Probably.

Ellowyn and Sir Dalan watch Sir Gracian head off after the woman, unsure what transpired to necessitate a chase.  As he disappears into the East Tower, they continue walking for a while in the near darkness, following the string of braziers to the end of the wall before heading back tot heir accommodations.

- - - - -

With a shrug, Arianwen looks back at Sir Garym, "we can always stay in the castle, I would certainly prefer that while you are gone as I will have people around and no responsibilities for keeping up a manor.  If you want your own manor in Bod Dynal, you have but to ask."  The pair walk along the rampart for a while before turning in themselves.

- - - - -

Sir Gacian rushes to the East Tower and hurries down the stairs, following the distant sound of footfalls.  At the bottom of the stairs there are two long corridors, he notices the door at the end of one is closed while the other is swinging shut.  He runs down to the door and finds another staircase going down.  At the bottom, there is room with a low ceiling with several closed doors, and another open door down to the right on the opposite wall.  The room is cast in shadows as there are only a couple of torches, and there are several piles of boxes, crates, and barrels around.

Grabbing one of the two torches from its sconce on the wall, Sir Gracian pears around before examining the open door, which is at the top of a few steps in a small alcove.

He somehow misses the shadow as it separates itself from the wall and comes up behind him.  He feels a shove and goes tumbling down the three steps and the torch flies from his hand as he hears the door close behind him.

Sir Gracian picks up the sputtering torch and looks around.  He appears to be in a wine cellar.  The door is quite secure and seems to be locked.  There are no other doors, just racks and barrels of wine.  The hinges are on the other side and there is no window in the door.  Hitting the door with all of his might does not budge it at all.

Sir Gracian explores the room more thoroughly but does not find anything of interest.  There are eight barrels of wine stacked against the far wall from the door.  They all appear full and are difficult to move.  There are also long racks along each wall, each containing a couple of hundred bottles of wine.  The three steps leading up to the door make getting a running start difficult.

Sir Gracian yells and pounds on the door but never hears any response.  After a while, the torch sputters and burns out, leaving him in darkness.  At some point he drifts off to sleep.

Sir Gracian gets a check in Awareness.  You can't miss anything that badly and not learn something from it!

In the morning, Sir Garym is preparing for the Induction Ceremony for the Round Table Knights and Sir Dalan is preparing to head home.  They are both surprised when Sir Gracian does not come down for breakfast.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

"None that I know of, but perhaps the woman he was dancing with had a jealous suitor." Garym needed to be at the ceremony, but he also wanted to find Gracian. If, he was simply hung over in a barn somewhere Garym would have strong words for him. "Yes, send you men."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Dalan takes a half dozen men and they go off in search of Sir Gracian.  Asking around, no one has seen him since the banquet.  Starting in the East Tower, where he was last seen, the men spread out, searching room-by-room.  It takes a couple of hours before they find a wine cellar a couple of levels down, the door to which has been blocked.

After a little work, they unblock the door and find Sir Gracian inside.

Meanwhile, Sir Garym goes to the High Chamber, in which is ensconced the Round Table, and there is presented to the other Round Table Knights.  Then, the King stands and proclaims "you are charged never to do outrageousity nor murder, and always to flee treason; also, by no mean to be cruel, but to give mercy unto him that asketh mercy, upon pain of forfeiture of your worship and lordship of the King for evermore; and always to do ladies, damosels, and gentlewomen succor upon pain of death. Also, that no man take no battles in a wrongful quarrel for no law, ne for no world’s goods."

All of the knights stand, place their right hand upon their breast and swear, "I do!"

It is a yearly proclamation.

"What took you so long?" Gracian says and leave for his quarters. Embarrassed by being such a fool.

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Garym was overwhelmed as he walked into the High Chamber. King Arthur and his legendary Knights of the Round Table; Garym did not feel legendary in their presence, but he looked at each one of them seeing a trait that they embodied. A trait that Garym needed to strive for in all his dealings.

As the King spoke the oath; Garym realized that he was part of something bigger than himself. He was part of a new form of chivalry that strove not for personal fame and glory, but a new way of life for all of Briton. One which Might did not make right. A place where commoner and noble could raise their families with joy and safety. The Knights of Round Table were the protectors of those that could not protect themselves.

Garym's hand rose to his chest with the others. He did not just hear the words King Arthur spoke. He felt them deep in his very soul, and he knew that he would gladly die for them if needed. "I DO!!!"

Sir Dalan blinks in astonishment at Sir Gracian and touches his arm in a gesture to stop him fleeing at once. "My brother do you have any notion of who did this to you and why?"

Sir Gracian is clearly embarrassed and pulls Sir Dalan aside away from his men. Gracian sees no reason to why the Dalan's mean should have something to gossip about.

"It was a woman."
Gracian whispers "I was such a fool. I noticed her spying on me at the feast so I followed her. A servant had seen her - a Roman woman of noble birth - and I followed her here to the East Tower. I never saw her. I just felt someone push me and heard the door slam shut. Oh, I am such a bloody fool - and blind as a bat as well apparently!"

Sir Dalan's eyes widen but he simply nods and whispers back. "Well I'd keep my eyes peeled if I were you, there must be something more to this. Still she seems long gone by now. I suppose we best get ready for the journey home."

"I agree. Our focus should be on the coming campaign and not on some mysterious woman that is long gone by now. We have a war too fight and glory to be won!

But I am still a bloody fool ..."

Chapter 4.1 - Pentecost Tournament (517 AD)

Sir Garym and the other Knights mingle and chat for about an hour after the ceremony, each greeting Sir Garym and talking with him for a while, getting a feel for the new member.  The personalities are interesting and varied but all of the Knights are quite dedicated to Arthur's Vision and Serving the Kingdom.

Although it is not said, several hint that come Winter, Sir Garym is likely to be granted land from the King himself.  One of the perks of the role.

At length, the meeting breaks up and the Knights head off to their various duties.  Sir Garym will be joining the excursion to Ireland as marshal for Bod Dynol, mostly this is liaison work to integrate them with the rest of the army.

Sir Gracian and Sir Dalan head back to the west with their knights.  Sir Gracian is sure as they travel that they are being watched.  He occasionally catches sight of movement in the trees but investigation reveals nothing but hoofprints.  It seems that no one is anxious to attack a group of a couple dozen knights though.
