In reply to Joseph Rudyard Hunnisett (msg # 943):

Grimsby replied, "I must confess that while my work has given me a fair amount experience in riding, most of my riding in recent years has been on gashants, not horses, so I believe Miss Van Horn would be, as you say, better qualified to take the two horses to Fidalg."

"Gibraltar should be safe. When you are British, a little piece of home is rarely too far away." Catherine said.

"I only know how to ride sidesaddle" she added.

Felicity nods along, "Horses tend not to fare well on deck. 'Less we have means of walking them below decks, that might be for the best."

Talk of riding sidesaddle gets a look. "Best I ride them. Sidesaddle... " she shakes her head, and starts on a walk toward the horses.

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

"Well, now... as exciting an adventure as it may turn out to be," Arthur finally speaks up, "I'm afraid a trip to Mars at this point is out of the question for me."

"I've been weighing the issues in my mind, and I'm afraid I have more pressing family matters to attend to. While this may be a once in a lifetime opportunity, I must hope that it may come again."

"I can take the horses to Senor Fidalgo's ranch and explain the circumstances to him. Well, not the whole truth. Best that Schilling never knows what has transpired."

"I shall leave him with some money to care for the horses and get a promise from him not to sell the horses for at least two years in the event that you return. Is that sufficient time, do you think?"

In reply to Arthur Russell (msg # 948):

Grimsby replies, "That is an extremely helpful offer. I should think that several of the party  would return well before two years were over. My duties might keep on Mars, but I do not expect the rest would be staying on so long."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

"An adventure is one thing... a trip to Mars is a horse of a different color," Arthur replies.

"I'm not sure I'm cut out for that much adventure. I'll take the horse to Fidalgo and explain the situation to him."

"Plus, I'll hang around for a day or two to make sure Schilling doesn't cause any more problems. With the ship and weapon out of his reach, I expect he'll head home... or at least somewhere there are more opportunities and more resources."

He leaves the ship for the last time, takes the horses by the reins and leads them off down the road in the direction of Fidalgo's farm/ranch.

With Solar's wagon loaded onto the ship and secured, and Arthur disembarked and taking the horses to Fidalgo, the ramps are brought back aboard and the ropes hauled in.

There's nothing to keep you here any more.

Petras thinks going to Gibraltar for supplies is a good idea. He pulls out a map from its stored spot on the bridge and unrolls it. After locating Gibraltar on the map, he sets course in that direction.

"Flying ships aren't all that common," Petras says to the others. "How do you think the good folk of Gibraltar will react to it?"

"Do you know of some place to land the ship?"

"It will take a few hours to get there. We should make a list of what supplies we will need. I suggest everyone make up their own list, and then we compare notes to make the final list. That way, my thoughts will not influence yours, and vice versa."

In reply to Petras Valois (msg # 953):

Grimsby declares, "No doubt the British garrison of Gibraltar will accept our arrival with their traditional stoic fortitude, though the local folk with their excitable Spanish blood may show more surprise, even fear. To keep panic to a minimum, we might see if the Royal Navy has a place we might land within the Naval dockyards, where we would be less exposed to the public gaze. If you let me off outside the port, I could try to slip in and arrange our welcome."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 954):

"I would also suggest, Captain Petras," Joseph tosses into the conversation, "as we'd be approaching British Gibraltar from the north-west, should we fly straight there--in other words, heading out of Spain--you might consider avoiding the performance of a direct fly-over of the peninsula.  I've known some folks of a Military mind-set, in my day, who might interpret such a course as an aggressive act--and thus order people to start firing warning shots into the air."

"Perhaps....consider setting a course due south, until we're over the waters of the Mediterranean, then steer eastward, coming around to the north after we pass The Rock, then make a slow approach to the Colony from the west at a moderate altitude.  Maybe a hundred-or-so feet abouve the waves?  We approach, then come to a halt just shy of--and just abouve--the docks, and from there we call for the harbormaster."

"Also, Captain Petras, do you have any flags aboard, maybe one from your home nation?  It would help if the folks on Gibraltar had some means of identifying us as something other than an un-flagged pirate, as we approached.  Grimsby?  Got a Union Jack in your portmanteau?  I'm afraid a Stars and Bars hasn't been part of my luggage for some time." Joseph grins.

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

Grimsby responds, "You have an excellent point, Mr. Hunnisett. As there are still difficulties from time to time with the Spanish over our possession of Gibraltar, I can imagine some zealous British officer might try to reach us with a howitzer or the like if we appeared unidentified. I regret that my own political responsibilities often mean I must appear without a flag, so I have no Union Jack on my person. Perhaps we could improvise something -- a simple English cross of St. George (red on white) might serve."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

In reply to Catherine Harston (msg # 957):

Grimsby replied, "There are no pirates within British waters at Gibraltar. There may well be occasional sea-going rogues on the coast of Morocco -- I know there are still tribes in the interior who care nothing for the nominal rule of His Sherifian Majesty. But I doubt they would be so reckless as to attack a vessel under the British flag --even an improvised one. Our Commodore Sir Edward Pellow taught them that lesson a couple of generations ago, to say nothing of Mr. Hunnisett's compatriots and Commodore Preble. Strictly speaking, that was further east, but I believe the lessons are remembered all along these coasts."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

As the ship lifts from the ground, Felicity leaned on the rail. Keeping her eyes trained as the canyon started to descend around them. Her hat tilted back, weight on her elbows. A tin of tobacco leaving her pocket, quickly, deftly, turned into a little tube of a cigarette. Chemical lighter not far behind. Her attention staying mostly on the land beneath them all as it began to slide past them.

Grimsby kept a careful eye on the ground, wary of any sign of pursuit, either by Solar's former captors or Spanish authorities.

Catherine nodded at her guardian, relieved they were safe, but slightly disappointed they wouldn't be dramatically battling pirates. When the ship began to lift off, Catherine's breath caught in her throat in wonder, and she stared before moving nervously away from the rails. "Oh my goodness! I can't believe I'm flying!"

"Yes, I have a Lithuanian flag on board," Petras replies to Joseph.

"It did not occur to me to bring any other flags, even if I could have acquired one, for it was never my intent to be deceitful."

"Alas, Schilling and the others were not so concerned. They brought aboard the flags of their own countries... Germany, Italy, Russia, and, though I had not heard them say they would ever go to England, a flag of Great Britain."

"They are in the captain's cabin."

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

In reply to Petras Valois (msg # 965):

Joseph ponders for a moment, before answering 'Captain' Petras.

"Well, sir, raising the Union Jack would certainly get us into Gibraltar with ease, but after docking we'd probably have a lot of explaining to do....as this isn't, actually, a British Registered vessel.  Though I suppose Mister Grimsby might assist with that difficulty.  Maybe."

"Actually, Captain, would it be safe to say that you never did go to any maritime agency, or any other branch of Lithuanian officialdom, to register your ship?" Joseph asks, just a little bit critically.

"Oh, well.  Better safe than sorry.  You are Lithuanian, you built this ship in Lithuania, so I think it would be best if we fly your Lithuanian flag.  I am unaware of any International Issues between Great Britain and your Lithuanian Commonwealth, at the present time, so it should be safe enough."

With a grin, Joseph raises his right hand and 'puts a knuckle' to the brim of his schutztrooper hat,

"Cap'n's permission, I'll go get that flag, and run her up the flagstaff." Joseph says, jauntily, before heading off to the Captain's Cabin--which everyone had explored, previously--to get the Lithuanian Commonwealth flag.

"They are in a secret compartment in the back of the wardrobe," Petras explains to Joseph.

"I built the secret compartment in case I needed to hide any valuables from bandits or raiders or pirates... or dishonest officials, however unlikely it was that they would look beyond the ship itself."
