Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

Grimsby follows Brie to the man's bedside, but leaves the conversation to her, since her Spanish is better than his own. He observes the book the man was reading, trying to determine what its subject may be.

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

The man does not seem to speak English, but he replies to Brie when she repeats her words in Spanish.

"No, I do not speak English. A poor humble goat-herder such as myself does not have need to speak another language, though I do speak a bit of Basque. My cousin Enrico is Basque."

"I am Javier Fidalgo, Miss Brie, and I am very pleased to meet you."

"I must confess that my story is far more exciting to everyone else than it was to me."

"I was walking into town to get a few supplies like I do every month. I suddenly felt cold. It got even colder. Then I woke up here. Not in this room. It was a different room, but here in the hospital. And I was cold."

"It has since been explained to me that I was found in a block of ice, that I should have been dead. Yet, the ice thawed and I woke up alive."

Brie will translate the Spanish to English for everyone. "If you have any questions, let me know"

She looks at Javier and speaks in Spanish "Where were you when this happened? Did they tell you who found you?"

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 547):

"He 'suddenly felt cold, it suddenly got colder'." Joseph says (in English), more to the room than directly to Javier, "Miss Brie, if you'd be so kind, would you ask Javier if he noticed the weather suddenly change during the time he was feeling this cold, or if he thinks it remained just the same as it had been all morning right up until his last memory?"

Brie will ask Javier how he noticed it got cold. Did you suddenly get cold or did the weather change or what? Did you notice if the cold came from the ground" she asks in Spanish

"If you had asked me at the time," Javier replies to Brie's question, "I would have said the weather had changed. I did not think anything of it. The weather can change suddenly at any time of the year."

"Based on what others have told me, it seems as if I was targeted by some phenomenon. It happened too fast to notice if it came from the ground."

Grimsby asks Brie"Please inquire why he now thinks he was targeted -- does he suppose he was frozen by some sort of ice gun?"

She looks at Javier "Were there any colder spots on your body, like where the cold might of struck you? Do you have any idea why you might have been targeted? Would you mind if I examine you, I am a nurse "

Catherine seems a little disappointed that there doesn't seem to be anything unusual about the man, and he doesn't seem to be able to tell them much. She'd hoped for something fantastical, the sort of thing even Edison would be surprised by. Still, she listens politely.

Re: Adventure 1: The Iceman Cometh

"I do not recall any particular area of my body that felt colder than elsewhere," Javier answers Brie.

"I only said I was targeted as an expression, but, I was the only one frozen, is that not so? If I was not targeted, would the block of ice have not been bigger? Or off to the side? Could it have been coincidence that I was encased in the ice? There were no other blocks of ice found in the area or anywhere else... or so I've been told."

"An ice gun? Is there such a thing? What would be the alternate if it was not some type of gun?"

"I've been poked and prodded and examined by a dozen people already, Miss O'Malley, so it would be silly to object to one more."

Brie nods to Grimsby and looks at Javier "Did you see any other strangers before you got frozen? Also, did you see any unusual things or sights, like any thing in the sky?" she will look over his body to see if there are any marks or anything.

"An airship? I have heard of such things, but I have never seen one," Fidalgo replies. "I suppose it could have been behind me and I would not have seen it... depending how high it was."

"It is a dirt road, reasonably maintained I would say. There are no residences in that area. I remember where I was when I... stopped remembering. So, I cannot say what happened, but the policia said it was near the white rock."

"Any strangers? No, I did not see any at that time. Miguel passed me about an hour early. He was returning to his farm."

"Oh, and there was the wagon. There was some writing on the side but I didn't pay attention to it. I would have said 'hello', but the man was busy watering his horses."

Grimsby says "Ah! The wagon sounds interesting. A pity he does not recall the lettering on it.
You seem to have a certain skill in working with the minds of others, Miss O'Malley. Do you think you can retrieve that writing from his unconscious memory? If not, can you at least ask him to describe the wagon and the man with it more fully? I gather it must have been fair-sized, since it was drawn by more than one horse."

Joseph frowns at Grimsby,

"What in the Good Name of Robert E Lee are you talking about, my dear Grimsby?" Joseph asks incredulously, "What is all this falderal about 'working with others minds'?  Miss Brie--have you been having your little jokes on Grimsby, here?  I mean, I've heard about the bad relations between your nation and his, but really!  You've got the man actually believing you, now."

"OH, he did see a wagon. The writing on the side was in English. He can't read it so he didn't know what it said. But it said:

Dr. Solar's
Optimystical Moonshine Express and Traveling Medicine Show
Fortune Telling * Sleight of Hand and Museum of Oddities
Pinkham's 100% All-Natural Remedies
Bartholomew's Magic Potion
Prof. Marvelo's Miraclo Pills
Lewis & Clark's All-Purpose Elixir
Parker's Oxygenated Bitters
Rossington's Wild Mountain Absinthe
King Tut's Secret Egyptian Tonic
Not For The Faint Of Heart!

Then she describes there are potions displayed as side-by-side bottles with the writing on the bottles. "There are two horses pulling the wagon, one chestnut and one golden palomino. so we probably need to find this man"

OOC: There's a picture of the wagon under Map 2.]

In reply to Grimsby H. Baskerville (msg # 565):

"A Snake-Oil Salesman?" Joseph asks, incredulous, but keeping calm, "Really, Brie?  You touch the man's head then pronounce that a Snake-Oil Salesman did it?  Card tricks in the parlor before supper is one thing, Miss Brie, but do you really expect us to believe this?"

Frowning, Joseph turns to Aubrey, then Grimsby, looking for agreement...but not seeing any.

"Fine.  There's no other clues to follow, and we have to go out that way to investigate anyway--there could be structures out there that Fidalgo is unaware of--and, of course, we need to go that way to look for this Medicine Wagon, too."

"Aubrey, have you any tests you wish to conduct with Señor Fidalgo?  Will the records the local Doctors have made suit your purposes, or do you need more?"
